I want to thank you for the neat method to get the pistons back in, by reversing the old pads and twisting a flat bladed screwdriver between them. Works great. Thanks.
Always pump the brakes with the brake lever before riding the bike after you fit the new pads and check the brake fluid level - very important to avoid an accident
Thanks, this will make it much easier than it already should be. FYI, the 2 caliper mounting bolts should be torqued to 27-31 foot pounds, for those having a torque wrench. A simple C-clamp would also do the job, no need to open the brake fluid reservoir up top.
You just won a subscriber. I followed your instructions for front brake pad change. You did a really good job at explaining it along with the challenges and watch-outs. Even the “pro” videos did not cover the key aspects you did.
Terrific video and out saved me dough. Two things I will add: #1 After disassembly, spray the parts down with brake cleaner. #2 Use a "C" clamp to push in the pistons. A car brake piston tool will only work on one of the pistons because the mounting bracket is in the way of the other. Thanks again and best always!
First of all... You're a funny bastard... very... and third... great video and almost 8 years later, lucky me came across it... love it brother... thanks a million and all the best to you.. !!! ^_^
@@acigarwilldo It's a pleasure to support someone such as yourself... a kindred... I checked out your website... very cool stuff, brother. If I were still in Cali I would look you up for a ride sometime. In Thailand now... look me up should you head this way... take care man... and much love and support always... ;-)
Oh, shut up. Just kidding. I ride a Honda. Maybe it’s like being Canadian, where you have to be nice. Therefore, I wish you a wonderful day, week, month, year and life! ✌🏼❤️ OK back to the tutorial! 😂
Thanks for the brake reservoir tip! Also, i had no intention of taking off the caliper, but if the reservoir tip doesn’t do the job, i will now! Thanks!
Dude, I love the demo! It was funny, straightforward, and very helpful. I'm also glad that you didn't need the c-clamp because I don't have one and I didn't want to buy one just for this project.
Hilarious AND informative! Nice! The tip about opening up the brake fluid reservoir really made my life a whole lot easier this time around when doing the brake pads on my 2009 Rebel. Did need a phillips screwdriver for that though which wasn't listed in tools needed--don't know if it's the same for 2004 models. But if people have all those other tools, they'll probably have a phillips screwdriver laying around somewhere too, so I'll just shut up now.
At first, I thought you were gonna be a corny take yourself too seriously waste of time...but that was actually the best brake pad tutorial I have seen... and you a pretty cool guy ! Thanks !
Good job, liked watching it! I never did Nissin brakes before. One remark: You don't really need to open the reservoir on top, there won't be more pressure than when the brakes were new. It makes pushing the pistons in easier, but it can also make a mess if you're not careful and move the handle bar by mistake.
Thanks for your video. Worked the exact same on my varadero 125. I used pliers to open the pistons, needed to open the reservoir. one screw was enough.
You sound like George Takei. Love the humor and clear video with easy to follow steps. I would only add that you may need to clean the caliper and add anti squeal compound in some cases. (It wont hurt to have it regardless. Thansk for the video, exactly what I was looking for before i did in and take my wife's 250 rebel front brake off for a squealing issue.
Dear Anson, Thank you so much for this video! To your information my Burgman 400 has the same calipers. Very well explained and very entertaining too. So keep up the good work! Grtz from Rotterdam Holland!👍👍👍
Anson's quite the character! But I found the walk-through to the point and clearly photographed. Good job. I also like how it prompted comments with great extra tips. FYI 27-31 foot pounds is 37-42 Nm.
No entendí nada porque no sé inglés pero viendo se aprende algo. Le di un like porque fue una muy buena grabación y creo que explicó bien para los que hablan inglés.
Hey budd , I saw you did a 250 rebuilt. I’m doing a rebuild for the time and I have dumb question. I got a engine hanger from the previous owner that was yet installed and I cant seem to figure out where it goes. Thanks.
You can actually squeeze the pistons in with your hands as well if you have a strong grip. That's how I do mine. Put your fingers on and across the piston and just clamp your hand around the back side of the caliper and squeeze hard. I usually do one piston at a time and it works just fine.
Well done Anson Hsu r, i recently bought an old 1989 Honda CD250 its been a while and needed there fresher i think you should defiantly make more films your a natural, you wouldn't be related to George Takei would you
Paul Fischer Whatever floats your boat mate! As a precaution I like to inspect the pistons, boots, spring plate and pad pins when I replace my brake pads. It’s only 2 bolts to dismount the caliper and makes it easier for me to push the pistons back in to make room for the new thick brake pads to go in. The Honda Rebel (up to 2016) has drum brakes in the rear. Cheers!
Man saved me some money from going to the bike shop one more thing when pushing in the piston be sure to cover the pump pro perly did mine and the pressure from the push splash the brake fluid oil all over my bike😑😑
that's why I like to drain most of the fluid from the resevoir before doing it. that way it has room for the fluid to go. .... then after you pump the brakes a few times to get them to set, refill the resevoir with fresh fluid
my four Fork Bolt are extremely difficult to loosen. Must be common if all four are like that. Any suggestions. Please. I've tried everything. don't want to strip Allen bolts holes
how do you know you need to replace the pads? ...does it make a screeching sound or is the travel on the hand lever increased? ...or does the bike simply not stop ??
The best and proper way is to do a visual check and see how thin the pads are. Generally, if there's a millimeter or less of the friction material it's time to replace them ASAP before they wear out and expose the back metal plate of the pads. If it gets to that point the rotor will be chewed up and it won't sound pretty. The hand lever travel shouldn't change because the brake fluid from the reservoir will compensate for the space gained from the pistons pushing out. Hope this helps Jack!!!
Are the parts for the Honda Rebel expensive? For example, how much do you think a knew gas tank would cost? I know car parts from the dealer are very expensive. That is why most people go to Autozone or other car parts stores for their parts. The problem with motorcycles is there is no such thing as a Cyclezone to save the day.
I want to thank you for the neat method to get the pistons back in, by reversing the old pads and twisting a flat bladed screwdriver between them. Works great. Thanks.
Anytime. Glad it worked. Cheers!

Thank you! Very informative and witty video. My bike is a Honda Varadero XL125, 2007, the procedure is exactly the same. :-)
Great tutorial. It took me less than 15 minutes to do and saved me some money too.
Yay thanks!

Thanks Bobby. You were spot on. Took me less than an hour. Highly recommend this video.
well done easy to see and learn how to do this myself!
Thank you so much I think I learned more here in this vid than in moto class at community college.
Thanks for your video. Worked the exact same on my varadero 125. I used pliers to open the pistons, needed to open the reservoir. one screw was enough.
Dude, this was the best tutorial ever! And useful!! Pads on my Dominator lookin goooood! 😎
Glad it helped!
Awesome! Thanks dude.
Do you have a tutorial for the rear brakes, on the same bike?
This was so good...lol...man, I this guy should host a DIY motorcycle repair/maintenance show.

Old but still very good video. Thank you. Any good videos on how to fix a dirty piston?
Thank you. Sorry, not at the moment. But I can make a video on that when the time comes!
Well done, we used your video as a reference to change the front brakes pads on our Rebel. Thank you!
Radio DJ turned to biker! or both.
Seriously, this is very helpful.
You made that tutorial looks fun thanks
Thank you! Very glad to hear.

Also...great top on lining the master cylinder to catch any spillage 👍
Great simple tutorial. Used for my 88’ NX250. Thanks.
class video mate .thanks from uk 😎
Aye. Thanks mate! Cheers!
This is the tutorial that helped me the best. Thanks sir :)
Very glad to hear that. Happy riding!
a video on how to drain/replace brake fluid would be nice. Also, how to change rear brake pads.
Rear brakes should be done by someone who has some knowledge of removing and realigning the rear tire. Not for a novice.
Great instructions! My Honda CB500 needs front pads doing... I'll do it myself. Thanks George... Sorry, Anson!👍
Wham, bam, done.
Great videos, mate. Subbed and addicted to them!
fun, detailed and very useful video. thank you!

Hey budd , I saw you did a 250 rebuilt. I’m doing a rebuild for the time and I have dumb question. I got a engine hanger from the previous owner that was yet installed and I cant seem to figure out where it goes. Thanks.

Very informative, thanks dude!
This whole video is amazing ly funny.
lol thanks.
Hey dude greart video. Is it the same steps for a 2007 Honda Sahdow spirit? Thank you
Hey Darwin, I cannot confirm if the steps are the same on the Honda Shadow. They should be very similar though! Concepts are the same. Good luck!
Other than replacing the cap for the brake fluid reservoir, is anything else needed like bleeding the lines?
Nope. Only if you get air in the lines. For example, disconnecting the brake line from the caliper.
thanks man! just finished changing mine
It worked on my Honda SH150, thanks
I'm glad it worked! Cheers!
Very useful video. thanks
Is it really necessary to remove the caliper .Just did my honda front and back today without the calipers dissengaged
Paul Fischer Whatever floats your boat mate! As a precaution I like to inspect the pistons, boots, spring plate and pad pins when I replace my brake pads. this is awesome more bike vids please
I have an 86 450 and a flat clip with a center notch fell out. Yours didn't have it. I can't figure out where it goes and it works fine without it.
Very good, thanks.

If u flip the brake pad spreader it works it doesn’t because of the tube

Read the description
Exactly what I was thinking! We need to goad this guy into making another video where he says "Oh my!" now! :-D
Damn, nice vid and funny. Thanks
Thank you!
