James, I was raised by a home builder and concrete construction guy and he taught me everything he knows and I worked along side my dad for many years! I said all that to say this, I’ve watched you since the start and I’m blown away by your attention to detail, willingness to learn new skills, and your humility in it all! You’re one of the top 3 of my favorite RUclips channels and I never miss an episode! Keep up the good work! Also Clovis is an amazing dog!!!! Good luck to you brother!

Hahahah I was about to comment that. I use to do a bit of fencing here in new zealand. And it makes it easier to just work the hole with it still running
EP39 ADDENDUM: GOOD FOLKS! FORGOT TO MENTION 3 THINGS. 1) I ADDED 3 ADDITIONAL SUPPORT COLUMNS TO THE WOODSHED FOUNDATION TO BEEF IT UP. I REALIZED THE WOOD I HAVE FOR THIS FALL IS ALREADY SEASONED BUT WET WOOD CAN BE MUCH HEAVIER. INSTEAD OF USING THE SAME PRESSURE TREATED 6X6 BEAMS I WANTED TO TRY OUT POURING CONCRETE BEAMS FOR THE LEARNING. 2) THE SAUNA LOCATION I ACTUALLY WALKED WITH MY NEIGHBOUR BEFORE CLEARING. IN HIS 40-YEAR EXPERIENCE ON THIS RIVER THE BIGGEST FLOOD HE EVER SAW ABOUT 10-YEARS BACK, HE ESTIMATED THE KNOLL I AM LOOKING TO BUILD ON WOULD HAVE BEEN UNDER ONE OR TWO FEET OF WATER. SO THAT’S WHY HE RECOMMENDED TO BUILD THE SAUNA ON A 2-FOOT PILING. 3) AFTER BUILDING THE WOODSHED, NOVEMBER WILL BE ALL ABOUT GETTING THE FOUNDATIONS DONE FOR THE OTHER OUT BUILDINGS WE WILL BUILD OVER THE WINTER. LAST YEAR THE GROUND FROZE BY MID DECEMBER SO THAT IS OUR FOUNDATION DIGGING DEADLINE. MAY THE GODS BLESS ALL OF YOU! BOTH THE OLD GODS AND THE NEW. 🫡🤝⚡️🐺🌲
Building for a 40 year flood event is generally poor practice. We would generally build for a 100 year flood event, and even this is in question with the effects of climate change. Give yourself a margin of safety when it comes to flood protection! (ie: if your once in 40 year flood has you in 2' of water, your once in 100 year flood may be 4' of water, so build the structure to withstand both) Of course this is all null if you only want/expect the building to last 10 or 20 years. :)
Hi I'm thinking swimming in a pond or what you call it that the Beavers use isn't really healthy they actually use the bathroom in the water just saying no hate here
A Finn here. Build the sauna where it works best for ice dips. Not sold on the full window side sauna. You're not there to gaze off but to turn inwards, I feel like. Love everything about the show, thanks James for sharing it with us!
I agree with OMDC2813. The window might get fogged up after the first steam anyway. Oh, and saunas are even better when you pronounce it sow-nah. ;) Great content. Look forward to it every week. Thanks for your efforts!

I found this channel about a month ago but i am almost caught up to your newest videos, my son and I always watch it and he calls you the "ooga booga guy". we need more cave man talk and we need the dwarfs back more often. The character you created in the first few episodes is as good as the log cabin part of the videos.

Woodshed suggestion, put a door on front and back. If you dont clear the shed in a season then you can pick from the 'back' next time. New wood will be at the back next season.
Architect from italy here… one tip i could give you for concrete work is to use a “concrete vibrator”. What that does is it lets all the air that is trapped in the concrete to get out, and makes it all settle and grip on the rebars… great work though just a little adjustment for you to use in bigger concrete work. T Love the serie. OOGA BOOGA
I think option B. Also think the laser level is the way to go. Especially over longer distances. Love this channel. Love that you don't really care that you don't know how to do everything. you just jump in and start.
you should get the mesh screen for the front door it. it hangs like a curtain and has magnets that fasten it in the center. that will definitely reduce the flies in the cabin as you leave the door open for fresh air
GOOD SIR NATION, SAGE ADVICE INDEED! SOMETHING I WILL CERTAINLY DO FOR NEXT SPRING! AT THIS TIME, THE FLYING INSECTS ARE MOSTLY DORMANT HERE IN CENTRAL ONTARIO DUE TO THE COLD 🥶 BUT FOR NEXT SPRING FOR SURE!
I've only ever had Elk for wild game before. Not even a wild bird. I ADORED Elk. Elk Burgers specifically is what I had, and I could live off of it. Its killer. I image Meeseseseses meat is also incredible! Autumn is my favorite season, with Winter a close second. Autumn is so gorgeous, the storms roll in, weather and lighting becomes varied and moody, it cools down a lot, the fog banks return, early morning dews are common, winds pick up, there's the signature orange warm sunlight you get no other time of year, and you have the return of that autumn nip in the air. Adore it. Add in that it means its harvest season (I LOVE harvesting!), and the fact that it begins the time of year for fires and baking... Its the single most fun, cozy and theraputic of seasons. Winter because of the sky cocaine and the "cold". Even 20°f is not that cold for me. A hoodie and light sweat pants at most for me 😂. But have been known to be found outside enjoying snow while in shorts and a T-shirt. It is also the season of the most peace and quiet. Everyone stays inside, so it's a empty world, while the snow mutes all noises. Its absolutely magical! The Austrogoths were not originally from the north, and the Visigoths were originally from the south, alongside the Vandals. Sweden does have Vastergotland and Ostergotland as states however, you are tight there, however I do not know if it is actually those people groups they were named for or not. I am definitely all about option B for the Sauna!
"Home grown tip" Take a five gallon bucket. Fill it with fine saw dust from your mill. Pour used engine oil into the sawdust and mix. Now you can dip your gardening tools into the mixture, work them around a bit then when done, your tool will be cleaner and have a anti rust finish "oil/sawdust" residue left on it. Great way to store your equipment without it rusting away! An old trick my grandfather used to do. Love your channel Your pup is cute and so well mannered!
You can do that, but if you damn the sawdust with water then put it into tube with some hole and compress down real hard and let it dry properly you also got good firer wood and burn a long time
The cabin is looking great. I think I would build a tool shed with a place to park the wheeler before winter. Option B is my vote. Im enjoying watching the show every week.
Make sure to occasionally get the atv out on the road and get it up to a bit of speed for awhile. The oil needs to get hot to burn moisture and the cylinders and valves will get carboned and gummed up..don't go out and redline it and drive crazy just a good ride with some speed and higher rpms to work the engine.
@@imleetsometimesquads and sxs are notorious for brake squeaks. My defender always has a brake squeak for the first 5-10 min ur out, all good by the time ur back lol
It’ll be perfectly fine being ridden the way it is now for its entire lifespan. It’s a four stroke four wheeler not a greasy two stroke or a sports car. The people who design them know there’s a large swath of atv owners who use them solely for low rpm farm work, very much like what james has been using it for.
Option B❤. Thank you for your time and hard, very hard work you put into making these amazing videos for us to follow along with you on your journey. Clovis, you are looking great, so handsome and happy. James AKA Mr Wild Homestead, keep on rocking it. Love your videos ❤❤❤
Cluster flies! We have been battling them hard the past five or so years on our homestead. I highly suggest using those sticky tape traps that you hang up. It seems to get them under control relatively quickly. They are incredibly annoying things, especially when you are trying to sleep lol. Ooga booga James and Clovis!
@damee8363 regarding the "bit of history", this guy could be a legit history instructor. All the history profs i enjoyed in school were just like Mr. Ooga Booga. They were extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic and humorous in their presentations. I think there is a future in this for him. Maybe combining his homestead videos with more of a history lecture as opposed to "a bit of history."
Maybe you can put up solar lights up at your pick up area your trail and at log cabin so that it's not so dark in the evening. Also set up trail cameras.

James watching you is the first thing on Saturday's mornings my wife and I do. We love watching your progress and now Clovis. We think option B for the Sauna, as it does provide a better view. Keep up the great work.
You are very close to sealing it up James, and Clovis looks like he has a marvelous temperament. Watch out for fly eggs under the sheep's wool. Love the hour-long vids.
@wildhomestead for your wood stove you can install a cathedral box in the roof rafters that your pipe goes through and this will keep your insulation away from pioe and keep your clearances. The only bummer is that it would have been easier on initial install, where now you will have to remove pipe to do this. The other option is build a chase around the pipe keeping clearances to the pipe from your loft floor to the roof deck. Installed wood stoves and fireplaces for 10yrs in MN and this is what we would do. Hope this helps and keep the fun coming.
Option B.... When working with laser levels outside, use GREEN not red. Also when pouring concrete, get a rubber mallet and tap the sides all the way around to help settle the concrete or you may end up having empty pockets and it weakens the pillar.
Just wanted to say I love watching you on your journey it's very inspirational your doing a great job you are a very smart person I appreciate you sharing your journey with all of use keep up the awesome work James OOGA BOOGA
James, I’ve seen all of the episodes of your program and I must say they are very entertaining. You do a great job. Oh that dog is wonderful. There is one thing that goes through my mind when I watch. How in the hell can you spend so much on this build. You must have a large bank account, (which is fine,) good for you. I’m 76 years old and stuck in an assisted living facility. Wife died a couple of years ago & don’t have anyone. But I’ve had a great life with a lot of adventure. James I hope you find the love of your life, it will be wonderful to find the right woman.
I wish we could've seen some videos of your life's adventures. Times have changed; don't forget that he's spending at least as much effort on the videos as he is on the build (AND he's learning both as he goes). He's easily making at least $1000 per video from RUclips, and that's before any sponsored items. I don't have a youtube background, but in mobile advertising a well-targeted specialized audience is easily worth at least $10 per 1000 views.
James, Next time hold your rebar cage outside the hole then pour 1/3 of wet concrete into hole. Then add your rebar cage. Then put remaining wet concrete into hole. Also they make a green laser system that can be seen in daylight. Try that one. Ooga Booga
James a little tip when doing concrete work is to take the blade out of your reciprocating saw and use it to vibrate your concrete form, pulls the air out for much stronger final product! Strength and Honour Also, a reading suggestion for you: John Gwynne! The Faithful and Fallen saga and The Bloodsworn Saga are the best books ever you will love them trust me!
James as you start working more on the loft area, when you put your flooring down this time, mix your boards from 2-3 different boxes as you lay them to get a more random natural look and avoid noticeable groupings. Obvs will be much more important on the bigger main house. SO love these weekly vids. Thanks for what must be a lot of behind the scenes editing work built into your hardworking week.
Good morning James. Those flies, we used to call them cluster flies. They were always a big problem in the old farm houses. They came in the building in late fall and came out again in the spring and there would be hundreds of them in the windows.
When you use the orga..keep it turning full bore as you bring it out of the hole..you'll find it much easier and the dirt will get thrown out of the hole
Love the vibe with Clovis! I wish you had a PO Box. I’d love to send you a customized gift for Clovis. But I understand it can also give away your direct location. Loved the video. Excited to see the sauna.
Yep James, option B for sauna. Love Clovis, dogs always know when you are working, and love attention paid to them. Good job on the insulation, hopefully flies can't get in again.
Wow! Homestead is looking good! Love the idea for the sauna down by the river. What a perfect spot! 👍😎👍 Oooohhhh.... I see what you mean about Option B - yes I think this would be a more epic view for an epic structure!!
Dear James. When you have build the sauna remember to buy a real finnish (original sauna country and the sauna is originally finnish word) stove to your sauna. I would suggest harvia sauna stoves they are THE best. Your friend from finland country of saunas, lakes and hars winter.
This is a minor thing but next time you are at hardware store or order on line a couple of boot trays for inside the door of your cabin and for under Clovis food and water bowls contains the water and mud
Congratulations on getting your cabin winterized in less then one year of your first anniversary. Quite the accomplishment. Looking forward to many more years.
Great progress James. I'd probably suggest using a rod to compact/deaerate the concrete while wet as you pour it. It will increase the density and thus the strength and durability, particularly with the freeze-thaw cycles you get in that part of the world.
Those flies look like cluster flies. We get them in our UP cabin. They come in the fall when the sun is shining on the cabin. Definitely attracted by the heat. Seal up every possible crack outside.
Mr. Alofs, good day to you. HELPFUL TIP: The Ryobi Auger has a hip/knee pad on the left handle so as you drill down you can go to one knee and let the machine torque against your hip/knee. I have this same auger and doing this SAVES yours forearms/biceps. It’s a beast, and noticing you catching on those roots made me want to comment so you don’t continue to endure what took me weeks to figure out. Carry on, good sir!
So much work done. So much to do. Looks so easy when watching someone else doing it, but back breaking when doing all by yourself alone. I recommend setting up some gravel paths around house for when the mud arrives. Ooooogggggaaaaa booooogggggaaaa

Give Dave Whipple (Bushradical) a watch. He just did a wood shed last week with very little measurements. His carpentry techniques are pretty simple. But great for applications in the wilderness where you wouldn’t have all the fancy tools.
@@112colonel Interesting comment! I had thought that a virtue. I can see that it may be problematic -- except there really hasn't been much to bark at?
An idea!😊 drop a couple pines as long a tree as you can. Make them bridge the stream as high up as you can. Just below the beaver dam. Then build it on the other side as high up on the hill as you can. Have to get up above flood plane to be safe.

I look forward to this and I watch cabin river outdoors, I love them both…… one man called Shaun & one called james. Ironically Shawn James is the daddy of homesteaders.
Try a green laser level: The main differences between green and red laser levels are visibility and application. Green lasers are generally more visible to the human eye, making them about four times more visible than red lasers, especially in bright conditions, which can be beneficial for both indoor and outdoor use.
That’s the beauty of a dog companion. They don’t care if they live in a tent, a cabin or a “Viking” cabin, lol, they just want your love and affection. They will repay 10 fold. I agree that a Green Laser will be far better for outdoor use. Loving the progress you are making. Clovis is now the star of the show!
Defo optional B for the sauna view, Clovis has settled in amazingly well he’s a little star
James,
Next time hold your rebar cage outside the hole then pour 1/3 of wet concrete into hole. Then add your rebar cage. Then put remaining wet concrete into hole. Also they make a green laser system that can be seen in daylight. Try that one. Ooga Booga
red laser enhancement glasses will not work?
James a little tip when doing concrete work is to take the blade out of your reciprocating saw and use it to vibrate your concrete form, pulls the air out for much stronger final product! Strength and Honour
Also, a reading suggestion for you: John Gwynne!
Build a bridge, build the sauna on the other side! Higher ground, better view! Great videos watched from the start! Hero!
James, a magnet screen door might be ideal for the front of the fortress. OOGA BOOGA
What an amazing beautiful companion you now have the puppy dog is awesome❤
You’ve got a lot of building work to do bro, a laser level is a must especially as you will be doing finishing work inside as well. Great job buddy.
You are silly sometimes…. I like it. Your humor is fantastic! Makes hard work I think more bearable.
Love your small history sessions. I really enjoy them. Thx for awesome videos.
Definitely option B for the Sauna! OOOOGA BOOOOGA
Building near the water can be a problem. For a sauna, I guess option B is ideal - the Mountain. Love.
Laser levels are game changing when building, they can be finicky with light levels but well worth it in the end.
Good morning James. Those flies, we used to call them cluster flies. They were always a big problem in the old farm houses. They came in the building in late fall and came out again in the spring and there would be hundreds of them in the windows.
Thanks James and Cloves, I’ve been watching since day one and now have a weekly Saturday morning routine to look forward to!
I love that Ryobi auger. Just keeping it running on the way out too, so it does the work for you.
This is a minor thing but next time you are at hardware store or order on line a couple of boot trays for inside the door of your cabin and for under Clovis food and water bowls contains the water and mud
And a boot scraper outside the door 😘
Option B…Clovis is such a good puppy and so cute 💙
Congratulations on getting your cabin winterized in less then one year of your first anniversary. Quite the accomplishment. Looking forward to many more years.
Great progress James. I'd probably suggest using a rod to compact/deaerate the concrete while wet as you pour it. It will increase the density and thus the strength and durability, particularly with the freeze-thaw cycles you get in that part of the world.
i always enjoy your Roman history lessons James. thanks for the great content.
Those flies look like cluster flies. We get them in our UP cabin. They come in the fall when the sun is shining on the cabin. Definitely attracted by the heat. Seal up every possible crack outside.
There’s glasses to help see the laser in sunlight. Great episode building is coming along great!
James, another Great Episode, Clovis is Coming along Nicely, Cabin work excellent and the New Build looks great. keep up the Great Standard of Workmanship.
Oooga Booga
Give Dave Whipple (Bushradical) a watch. He just did a wood shed last week with very little measurements. His carpentry techniques are pretty simple. But great for applications in the wilderness where you wouldn’t have all the fancy tools.
Dave is the GOAT
@@matthewoconnell2793 I like his channel 😎
This is gonna be one tough woodshed!
Clovis is growing daily!!! He’s majestic!
Not going to lie, was looking forward to this video but those camera angles up the ladder just made my day 😉
Man that pup is growing FAST!!!!
Doesn't bark much though
@@112colonel Interesting comment! I had thought that a virtue. I can see that it may be problematic -- except there really hasn't been much to bark at?
An idea!😊 drop a couple pines as long a tree as you can. Make them bridge the stream as high up as you can. Just below the beaver dam. Then build it on the other side as high up on the hill as you can. Have to get up above flood plane to be safe.
Clovis, the pup, so bold and stout,
A Swiss Mountain Dog with a mighty shout.
Beside James Alofs, through forest and stream,
Living the wild, fulfilling the dream.
From stacking logs to forging trails,
Through autumn’s gold and winter gales,
With strength and honor, they’ll make their way,
Clovis and James, come what may.
(I tried to use Ooga Booga, but it’s hard to sneak in a nineteen-symbol word!)
Last week's poem was based off an Irish Wolfhound lol sorry. Hope this makes up for it! This is the last poem for me, for about a month. New project with deadline looms...
Beautiful
Opt B view is awesome. After the floods & mud slides in the USA please keep it high enough for ultimate safety.
these videos are getting better and better. I approve.
Option B without any doubts!! Go for it…can’t wait to see the sauna done!!!🦍
OOGA BOOGA!
Hail Clovis, King of the Francs!
I look forward to this and I watch cabin river outdoors, I love them both…… one man called Shaun & one called james. Ironically Shawn James is the daddy of homesteaders.
Shawn seems to suffer more than James though... 😂
Try a green laser level:
The main differences between green and red laser levels are visibility and application.
Enjoy your time with that beautiful friend, many memories will come from it. Make time no matter how busy you are working. Kudos bro, keep living the good life.
Option B, to me is a no brainer! Thanks for another epic episode.
Clovis is the best dog! He is so mellow. Loved watching him explore his yard.
It's make me so happy to see You & Your dog together, you started to know each other now, thats (youst need to look at you) a realy happy feeling in both your minds! Enjoy life Sir, you deserve that Sir. Thanks from Peter Eriksson Sweden Europe, now in snow and minus 6 celcius! 😊😅😊
DUDE 😂 I don't think that I will ever see anything more classically Canadian than you eating fresh moose steak with maple syrup, all while wearing that red plaid shirt. You rock ! And so does Clovis! Also, you are wise to prepare your cabin so well. I hear that it's going to be a very cold winter. Love the channel; strength and honor!
It is amazing how much more confident you are in ladders compared to the first few videos 😊
Love watching your videos James. The humor, explaining what you are doing, the wildlife, history stories and of course the new addition to your little family, Clovis. He is a handsome boy. You have it all. Waiting for the next video.❤
Good morning team Wild Homestead!
Option B. And after filling tube's with concrete tap tube with hammer to get air pockets out . Great job.
Get a battery powered vibrating probe. You’ll be fine with the woodshed, but serious work needs the concrete vibration packed.
Another option is use a reciprocating saw without the blade against the tube/form to vibrate it.
Option B for the sauna has the best view!
Good morning James & King Clovis 🥰☕
We have a 2 year old Golden retriever named Cooper & he loves Clovis he boops our TV screen & wags his tail ( it's really cute ).
In honor of your 1 year anniversary coming up we have watched & enjoyed every episode again, you should be very proud of yourself James your cabin is Awesome.
Much Strength & Honor to you as well!
Oooga Booga 😂
I also went back recently & re-started from Ep.1 to capture the rawness of Day 1 :) Almost as good the second time around, especially while waiting a week or more for new episodes!
Option B hands down, anything worth doing is worth doing right.
Hi James another brilliant episode! Thank you!😀 Option B for the Sauna!😀
I caught up after a glorious week of bingeing this amazing channel then today at the supermarket I tripped and fell in the maple syrup section which ended up with me pouring Canadian maple syrup onto my black coffee while cackling like an unhinged old lady. Thank you for such wholesome and fascinating content, Sir James! Watching from New Zealand. Glad you were fed by some of our beef on your journey
For concrete you should run a rod into the wet crete back and forth to get all the air pockets out after each batch.
