My favorite line in the film and one of my favorites of all time if I really think about it. So simple and honest and profound. I love that Marketa got it.

I really loved the take on nihilism where it's literally like, if nothing matters in the grand scheme, then why not just just try to enjoy and cherish the moments you have with your loved ones vs being a "typical" nihilist who just doesn't care about anything or anyone because "nothing matters". I think the transition from pessimistic nihilism to optimistic nihilism is a journey we all take at some point in our lives. Pessimistic nihimism was basically my whole personality as a teen, very edgy, very "whats the point in life"... I'm in my mid-20s now and I'm still nihilistic, but I find being optimistic about the pointlessness of life has pretty much made me happy when I never thought I could be happy... a simple shift in how I perceived existence massively helped me get out of depression
Nihilism actually states that by nothing having inherent value, then everything can be of value and it's the power of the individual to find their own meanings and worth in the universe where none are set
In philosophical terms what you're thinking as "positive nihilism" is probably "existentialism" which emphasizes that individuals have the ability and power to find meaning in their own lives.
This movie was one of the best movies I've ever seen at the theaters. I've never experienced a theater erupt in laughter so loud and so often. It was incredible. The Daniels are geniuses.
Unfortunately, it might not come. It might, but I would not hold out hope. A24 is still a small company and may not have had the ability to push this film hard into international markets. Last time I checked, it made 20 million outside of the United States, which is probably great by A24 standards, but also a sign that its reach is not that far. Perhaps it will be available in India on DVD in a month or so, but I have no idea.
I loved this movie. I don't know if you guys picked up on this, but if you invert the everything bagel you get a googly eye. The bagel representing nihilism and hopelessness, and the googly eye representing joy and optimism. Like Ying and Yang. There's so many little things like that in this film. It's great.
I hope the ridiculous elements of this film doesn't hurt it during awards season because everyone involved in this film needs recognition. The editing alone deserves an Oscar nomination. "Everything Everywhere All At Once" is the type of film that makes me care about who gets an award at the end of the year.

(Edit: Sorry this got so long!!) I think there's a lot more to that ending bit. People rarely seem to mention this, but Evelyn (and I'm pretty sure Joy) is intended to have ADHD. This is not just me imagining things, the writers have talked about it. One of them even realized they have ADHD while writing/researching for the movie. I think that ending bit is, to an extent, Evelyn acknowledging her nature WITHOUT JUDGEMENT TOWARD HERSELF, rather than continue living in denial. Through this lens, it's not that she's done living in fantasy - she can finally acknowledge that she has a tendency to drift off, be okay with it, and refocus. I think it's implied that part of the reason that Evelyn "doesn't listen to anyone" is that, at some point, she became too proud/ashamed to admit that she doesn't always fully hear people and struggles with being present (like you said). I don't think the solution, though, is for her to snap out of it and stop living in fantasies. Instead, it's to acknowledge the tendency as not inherently a bad thing, so that she doesn't feel too embarrassed to ask someone to repeat themselves. This self-acceptance is key to her newfound ability to actually be present with her family and day-to-day activities.

I only caught it during the next few rewatches but the line of Joy where she says "It's just a statistical inevitability" is actually really important. This is the turning point of Evelyn because this is actually the SECOND time he's worked with the IRS agent to give them more time.
They did ALL OF THIS on a 25 million dollar budget! That's just insane when your visuals can outclass movies that were literally ten times more expensive! Still blown away and I can't wait for August when I can get my hands on that Mediabook edition to see it again. A once-in-a-lifetime achievement of cinema. The BEST movie I will see this year! Probably one of the best I saw in the last decade.
@@nellie__ Gotta also know that expensive movies most of the budget is going to marketing, expensive actors, post production since alot of the script is no offense, written to please but fast and loose. They arent as inspired and have to focus test to be the most pleasing. Its like when people think anime is high budget cause it has good animation, when in reality its just production pipelines that arent as bottle necked. Look at one punch man, way less animation frames than korrra the avatar show but it works with less prep time and budget. Now you have those 40 days with people who are inspired, know what shots to work on, don't get asked to continuously twike, tons of on lot shooting, and you have a movie that seems more expensive then the marvel movies that only go to like 4 places in one movie but cost a ton and the effects look half done in some scenes making it feel inconsistant. I think marvel should pull back honestly. How sick would it be if you ended the movie in a storyline like the chimera ant arc in Hunter x hunter with some invasion against some unstoppable villian and by the end he finds humanity and the avengers look like the bad guy. Sorta civil war ish...but with romance etc. It would change the whole marvel is just introduce character...fight villian lose, sad, get happy, refight villan win formula.

I also thought this was the most realistic depiction of “Chinglish”. As a second generation Chinese kid, I loved it, rarely if ever I get to see this level of everyday Chinese/Mandarin/Canton speak in film.
Waymond's speech reminds me of something from Patton Oswalt's comedy special that came out after his wife died. He said that his wife would say "It's chaos, be kind." And a line from a show that I assume you guys are gonna watch at some point, "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do."
This film left me in hopeful ruins. Please give Michele Yeoh her Oscar. Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu also need theirs for best supporting actor/actress.

this movie does such a good job at getting you to feel exactly how it wants you to feel. the fucking papercuts, the butt plugs, jamie lee curtis pro-wrestler wirework (apparently that was a bonding thing between her and michelle yeoh, they both are like "fuck a close up stunt double, i wanna swing on wires"), the universe with the rocks. there's so much to unpack. the fight choreographers are actually from youtube, they run the channel MartialClub. this and turning red were the two movies that really felt like the start of a cinematic movement for the east asian diaspora for me. the pervasive irreverence supports the deep emotional core of the film and allows it to create moments of surprise without relying on pulling the rug out from under you like a "gotcha" plot twist. everything feels earned, everything feels purposeful. every single time i see it, i feel wrung out at the end in the best possible way. catharsis from every angle. i saw one review where it said that this is the opposite of escapism. despite all the surrealist trappings, the goal is to show the meaning of where we are right now even though it is objectively shitty for everybody. healing is always worth it.
Michelle Yeoh has spent a good chunk of her career in Hong Kong, so the stuff here was a cakewalk compared to her time in Hong Kong. For example, in Supercop, she rode a motorcycle (2 weeks of training) in order to land on a moving train without wires or some sort of safety harness. Hong Kong did not have a good understanding of safety back then.
I've watched the movie seven times now in the past week, and I've watched 4 reaction videos. Cried every single time - even when just watching reacts. It's so powerful!
I love the trope of love transcending space, time and dimension no matter how much we try and escape it. Reminds me a bit of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind and Interstellar. It’s also important to note that this film is a decade in the making and Daniels were concerned when the multiverse concept started getting really popular because they were already using the concept, but I think in the end it really works out regardless. This movie stands out on its own completely and for me is the standard to model any multiverse film after or build upon. I’d also like to add to your final thoughts about Evelyn and Joy having opposing perspectives.. Joy and Evelyn are actually one in the same in terms of having a negative outlook on their own personal lives. Joy with nihilism and Evelyn with pessimism. Its driven home further when they are rocks and Joy explains to her mother that she thought her mom could give her a new way of looking at things so that she wouldn’t have to kill herself. She was asking her mom for help, but it turns out that she’s feeling defeated in her own way. It is Waymond, however that moves through his life with gratitude and leaning into the mundane through joy and accepting life for what it is and making the best/most of it. It is because of him, (who I feel is the heart and anchor of this film) that Evelyn is able to completely change her perspective and blend both how Waymond and Joy see the world. I also love how Joy is a metaphor. The family has lost their Joy and their joy (If that makes sense..) and we journey with them through each universe to learn how to be content with life even if it isn’t perfect or even if you haven’t turned into some great success. Because none of that actually matters. What matters is the love, the kindness and the joy we are able to give and find within all of this.
My issue is that Waymond is clearly not pulling his weight in this relationship which is why Evelyn is so anxious and stressed, he talks a good game and he IS right about Kindness, but he is wrong about contentment. Being content with something that isn't compatible with your happiness, stability, or safety long term is to fall into slow and cruel entropy. Constantly trying to make up the labor of two people (or really a whole community) with one fallible, person who has depreciable assets like energy, bodily functionality, health, mental stability, etc that depreciate over time and severe stress. She has been doing almost all the work for ages. She is annoyed with his attempts to inject levity into something deadly serious that she is not even shown appreciation nevermind appropriate compensation or equality in sharing that labor. There is a clear mismatch here and him being sweet is not an equal amount of time and energy put into this marriage. There was no attempt in this movie to rebalance that labor in the relationship, which is why conflict and potentially "pessimism" is an inevitability.
I love that you mentioned Eternal Sunshine, one of my favorite films along with EEAAO. They both do a superb job with weaving the threads of existentialism and surrealism into a love story.
Saw this movie in theaters with my girlfriend, knew absolutely nothing going in other than that it was incredible. Never has any piece of media outside of very select music ever connected with me like this, and it’s so grounding to relate this heavily to something that others can relate to as well. Helps remind me that we’re all going through our own individual struggles but anyone can understand on some level the same feelings. Such a beautiful movie. Immediately one of my favorites ever
I love the way this movie actually explores the philosophy of Nihilism beyond the popular surface value understanding mostly portrayed and exploring of the what the intent truly was to show that by rejecting the idea of set meanings and values, then anything can be of value and we are free to forge our own meaning and values in the world
The fight scene between Joy and Evelyn, I noticed that Joy squares up w her mom and Evelyn opens her arms for Joy, for a hug. And as Joy is throwing her mom punches, Evelyn is blocking them, she’s not hitting her back so I took that as she’s letting Joy express herself, she’s letting Joy feel after not listening to her. And I know at some point in a child’s life,they had thought about throwing hands with their parents. Now I would never go through with it, have the guts to. But that scene felt so close to home and I just wish my parents would have let me express my feelings without thinking I was disrespecting them or attacking them

This movie is incredible! I started crying right around the same time as Marketa. So much goes in, and so many emotions. It's crazy because movies often direct you to feel just 1 ir 2 things, but like life, this film has you feeling so much. So glad you watched this. And yes, I thought of this movie during Kimiko's fight on episode 4 of The Boys.
Awesome movie! Watched it 2 times in the theaters. For the sound. Beautiful. Lost my brother 1 year ago. He sought to take his own life. It was hard to get through. Especially for the family. Being strong for them was harder. Getting things done, and helping them all process the transition. Even now. My other brother hurts and feels that everything doesn't matter as well. I keep telling the family that life matters. Even little things. Kindness, moments of full happiness, even sadness, and anger. It all matters. Even putting googly eyes on a rock, gives it life. Strange that such a simple little thing can bring life to an object. Kindness gives this existence great meaning.
Thanks. Allows me to share the energy with my family. I can't stand being the ear for people (not just my family) all the time. But little bits and pieces of help from others goes a very long way. Even sending "good vibes" can invigorate an individuals strength and outlook. Thank you. Again
EEAAO is the most Gen-X movie of all time. It answers the question "What if you put everything on an everything bagel". Jane Lane and Daria actually wrote this screenplay during one of their summer breaks.
Something I never noticed before is that the beginning of the movie deirdre called her mrs. Wang and at the end of the movie she called her evelyn after all they’d been through together
That scene when the dad fights against those bodyguards in the beginning. That whole action scene reminded me of Jackie chan’s style in rush hour and just made me smile big! I loved that ❤
it is said he was who that part was written for but some reason he didn't do it or get it. he's a staunch conservative, i think are some scenes in this movie he'd have a real problem with especially since he's so in with China's central government. they gave him some official title or something so he now has a supposed rep to maintain. /shrugs. Michelle Yeoh was in an interviewing saying Jackie Chan called her after she won the award for this movie to say “you know your boys came to me first” because originally it was written for him and he turned it down and she was like your loss… 😂
As much as I've loved Jackie Chan and in a different universe would've loved to see that movie as it would've resonated with me more personally, I'm so happy Michelle was able to take this opportunity as it just feels natural with her acting
This film really does feel like a masterpiece. Visually amazing, beautifully written, fantastic acting, awesome choreography, and so on. The scene where Evelyn remembers all the great happy moments with her husband through their struggles choked me up more than anything else. She remembered how amazing of a partner he has been, his unconditional love powered them through everything. Just love this movie.
Since the first trailer, I was so excited for this film. As I sat in a half empty theatre watching it opening weekend, I felt every emotion. The people that were there shared in something spectacular that night. I've never applauded after a film before... I did at this one along with other people in my screening. One of the best films I have ever seen.

Words can't express my love for this film. But since I can't really just rely on incoherent squeezing in a text-based medium, and I seriously cannot do justice to it in a single comment, I'll just say that I saw this a little over a week ago and came out of the theatre feeling like...I could do anything. I have ADHD and executive functioning issues, and so much about this film speaks to me that...I don't know. It felt like it was directly answering my fears that I'd wasted my life or that I would never amount to anything, and that it was telling me I could be better than I gave myself credit for, and that my past experiences, even the terrible ones, had helped form who I was in ways that I could draw upon for strength. It's probably too early to say "this film changed my life," we'll have to see if the lessons stick. But even if just for a little while, it made me feel complete in a way that I often don't.
it kinda was directly addressing adhd. while daniel kwan was writing evelyn's character, he thought it might be appropriate for her to have undiagnosed adhd and his research into other people's experiences led to him to get evaluated for it. he found out that he had adhd through the process of writing this movie.

So original jenny slate wouldn't have gone to the party, but we don't know what happened in this universe that made her consider it and actually attend. who knows! maybe she had a cancel in plans so she was like 'fuck it i'll go', or maybe in this universe she has a better rapport with evelyn. the beauty of the multiverse :D
There’s also a cut scene that explains why she came back. Has something to do with her sons bday party she couldn’t go to, so if she’s a part of the community and a regular, then it makes sense she may want to distract herself with it. Lots of people attend community parties. Also, it’s a diff universe I think
She didn't seem to enjoy her phone call she was on, she even acknowledged the laundromat worker "can't read minds, this is how it works" so she wasn't impatient with the business. I think her character was stressed out by whatever was going on at home and wanted to go somewhere she was wanted.
One of my favorite movies of all times. glad yall reuploaded this. I cried, laughed, got scared and thoughly enjoyed myself. this might be one of the most well done all around movies. this HAS to win/ or at least be nominated for multiple awards.

Easily the best movie I've seen so far this year and possibly one of the best I've seen ever. This was such a fun viewing experience in the theater. The way they managed to seamlessly bring together so many different genres, stylistic and cinematic elements they way they did still blows my mind.
The version of "Also sprach Zarathustra" used is the one done by the Portsmouth Sinfonia; their schtick is everyone swaps instruments before performing.
I thought the movie was going to end with the rocks which would have been fine. THANK GOD they took it to the next level, to the more optimistic conclusion.
This is the first ever movie that I’ve felt intense emotions the entire way through, wethers it’s happiness, laughter, sadness, cringiness. There really was never a still moment (metaphorically hahah, because the rock world was pretty still)

Such a multifaceted film that’s juggling all these different threads and somehow in the chaos of it all, accomplishes the feat to connect them all into a cohesive narrative. When you strip down the dressing of absurdity, it’s a family drama and the central protagonist beaten by life. Whether it’s from her disapproving father or her fraught relationship with her daughter, Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan make the absurdity of the multiverse manifestations of Evelyn’s, Joy’s, Waymond’s and even Gong Gong’s personal hang ups, disappointments, and regrets and their inability to articulate their frustrations. Even Deidre Beaubeirdre doubles as an antagonist and a character to help understand and unpack her relationship with her daughter and her husband. It’s one thing to create a movie of random stuff, but it’s that much more impressive to make it work and be a creative way of telling marital problems, stress, regrets, overcoming homophobia, being kind, and expressing love and care. Great film! Really overJOYed that it won 7 Academy Awards, sweeping, best picture, best actress, best supporting actress, best supporting actor, best original screenplay, best directors, and best film editing.
One of the best movies I have ever seen. The BSoD edit was great. Also the manic laughing of Chris cause of the thunder lining up with the events in the movie was great.
Congratulations to the directors, the producers, and the actors for all the awards they received for this film. The Best Picture win is well deserved. This film is also really ground breaking as it's the first science fiction film in the modern era to win an Academy Award for "Best Picture".
I have seen the movie maybe 20 times already, I bought it after seeing it in the theatre. I spend the most part of my day watching channels reacting to the movie because it's the only way I can experience seeing it for the first time, again.
38 days 25 million which is nothing and 5 special effects members made this master piece. Meanwhile Disney and Marvel can't stop making crap. This movie was amazing. I needed this movie. The lesson the acting the feelings. Everything about this movie was great. I was hooked every second and rooting for everyone. Top 5 all time movie and I love LOVE everyone in this movie. You FEEL for everyone in this movie.
Im a bit of a film buff. Watched about 10,000 films in my 53 years. I have to say that i have NEVER enjoyed a film as much as this one. The sight of a bald asian guy with no underwear on flying towards a butt plug, legs akimbo, will stay with me forever 😂😂😂
Marketa was me watching this in theatres, everything after the rock scene I started sobbing. This film was so beautifully done and I am so so happy I was able to watch it. It was unbelievable

I can't believe Andy and Brian, from RUclips's MartialClub, got to fight *the* Michelle Yeoh! Props to Brian for being the guard who got the absolute piss repeatedly beat out of him throughout the entire movie.
The first thought that came to my mind after watching this movie was that it felt like a fever dream, it felt like i was watching this while on something. it was amazing and one of the best movies i have ever watched.
One thing they never translate is whenever Evelyn “mutters” in response to a new development, it’s usually her saying “神经病！” which means “This/You’re crazy”. But I guess in the context of the film it’s self-explanatory.
Well they translated it at least once, when she was in the elevator with Waymond, as "don't be stupid," which feels a bit mild. And later in the elevator, her 你真的疯了 did get translated as "you're crazy" when it's closer to "you've really lost it."
For everything that this movie made me feel, I think it may be my all-time favourite, now and forever. A lot of the ideas were unoriginal, but the execution was beyond phenomenal. It made me understand those ideas in a very real, relatable way, and it actually unnerves me how easily I followed the narrative internally. Like many others say, "nothing matters" went from depressing to freeing, and I watched it twice already. I absolutely, unashamedly cried and laughed at every key moment, because I felt like I really understood what was happening, or at least understood what it meant to me. To me, this movie is peerless.

Unfortunately, it might not come. It might, but I would not hold out hope. A24 is still a small company and may not have had the ability to push this film hard into international markets. Last time I checked, it made 20 million outside of the United States, which is probably great by A24 standards, but also a sign that its reach is not that far.
Perhaps it will be available in India on DVD in a month or so, but I have no idea.

I loved this movie. I don't know if you guys picked up on this, but if you invert the everything bagel you get a googly eye. The bagel representing nihilism and hopelessness, and the googly eye representing joy and optimism. Like Ying and Yang. There's so many little things like that in this film. It's great.

"Everything Everywhere All At Once" is the type of film that makes me care about who gets an award at the end of the year.

I think there's a lot more to that ending bit. People rarely seem to mention this, but Evelyn (and I'm pretty sure Joy) is intended to have ADHD. This is not just me imagining things, the writers have talked about it. One of them even realized they have ADHD while writing/researching for the movie.
I think that ending bit is, to an extent, Evelyn acknowledging her nature WITHOUT JUDGEMENT TOWARD HERSELF, rather than continue living in denial. Through this lens, it's not that she's done living in fantasy - she can finally acknowledge that she has a tendency to drift off, be okay with it, and refocus.
I think it's implied that part of the reason that Evelyn "doesn't listen to anyone" is that, at some point, she became too proud/ashamed to admit that she doesn't always fully hear people and struggles with being present (like you said).
I don't think the solution, though, is for her to snap out of it and stop living in fantasies. Instead, it's to acknowledge the tendency as not inherently a bad thing, so that she doesn't feel too embarrassed to ask someone to repeat themselves. This self-acceptance is key to her newfound ability to actually be present with her family and day-to-day activities.

I only caught it during the next few rewatches but the line of Joy where she says "It's just a statistical inevitability" is actually really important. This is the turning point of Evelyn because this is actually the SECOND time he's worked with the IRS agent to give them more time.
They did ALL OF THIS on a 25 million dollar budget! That's just insane when your visuals can outclass movies that were literally ten times more expensive!
Still blown away and I can't wait for August when I can get my hands on that Mediabook edition to see it again. A once-in-a-lifetime achievement of cinema. The BEST movie I will see this year! Probably one of the best I saw in the last decade.

@@nellie__ Gotta also know that expensive movies most of the budget is going to marketing, expensive actors, post production since alot of the script is no offense, written to please but fast and loose. They arent as inspired and have to focus test to be the most pleasing. Its like when people think anime is high budget cause it has good animation, when in reality its just production pipelines that arent as bottle necked. Look at one punch man, way less animation frames than korrra the avatar show but it works with less prep time and budget. Now you have those 40 days with people who are inspired, know what shots to work on, don't get asked to continuously twike, tons of on lot shooting, and you have a movie that seems more expensive then the marvel movies that only go to like 4 places in one movie but cost a ton and the effects look half done in some scenes making it feel inconsistant. I think marvel should pull back honestly. How sick would it be if you ended the movie in a storyline like the chimera ant arc in Hunter x hunter with some invasion against some unstoppable villian and by the end he finds humanity and the avengers look like the bad guy. Sorta civil war ish...but with romance etc. It would change the whole marvel is just introduce character...fight villian lose, sad, get happy, refight villan win formula.
AND Ke Huy Quan(51, 52 on Aug 20) and Michelle Yeoh (59, 60 on Aug 6) outclassing much younger actors when it comes to fight scenes.

Waymond's speech reminds me of something from Patton Oswalt's comedy special that came out after his wife died. He said that his wife would say "It's chaos, be kind." And a line from a show that I assume you guys are gonna watch at some point, "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do."
I think we, as Malaysians, feel so proud to finally see Michelle Yeoh get the movie she deserves.

So glad to see another high tier reaction. I cannot express how much I immediately loved this movie. Immaculately written, acted, and directed. I laughed. I cried. I felt resentment and introspection. By far the best movie of the year so far, and it's honestly not even close.

this movie does such a good job at getting you to feel exactly how it wants you to feel. the fucking papercuts, the butt plugs, jamie lee curtis pro-wrestler wirework (apparently that was a bonding thing between her and michelle yeoh, they both are like "fuck a close up stunt double, i wanna swing on wires"), the universe with the rocks. there's so much to unpack. the fight choreographers are actually from youtube, they run the channel MartialClub. this and turning red were the two movies that really felt like the start of a cinematic movement for the east asian diaspora for me. the pervasive irreverence supports the deep emotional core of the film and allows it to create moments of surprise without relying on pulling the rug out from under you like a "gotcha" plot twist. everything feels earned, everything feels purposeful.
every single time i see it, i feel wrung out at the end in the best possible way. catharsis from every angle. i saw one review where it said that this is the opposite of escapism. despite all the surrealist trappings, the goal is to show the meaning of where we are right now even though it is objectively shitty for everybody. healing is always worth it.

Michelle Yeoh has spent a good chunk of her career in Hong Kong, so the stuff here was a cakewalk compared to her time in Hong Kong.
For example, in Supercop, she rode a motorcycle (2 weeks of training) in order to land on a moving train without wires or some sort of safety harness. Hong Kong did not have a good understanding of safety back then.

I've watched the movie seven times now in the past week, and I've watched 4 reaction videos. Cried every single time - even when just watching reacts. It's so powerful!
I love the trope of love transcending space, time and dimension no matter how much we try and escape it. Reminds me a bit of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind and Interstellar.
It’s also important to note that this film is a decade in the making and Daniels were concerned when the multiverse concept started getting really popular because they were already using the concept, but I think in the end it really works out regardless. This movie stands out on its own completely and for me is the standard to model any multiverse film after or build upon.
I’d also like to add to your final thoughts about Evelyn and Joy having opposing perspectives..
Joy and Evelyn are actually one in the same in terms of having a negative outlook on their own personal lives. Joy with nihilism and Evelyn with pessimism. Its driven home further when they are rocks and Joy explains to her mother that she thought her mom could give her a new way of looking at things so that she wouldn’t have to kill herself. She was asking her mom for help, but it turns out that she’s feeling defeated in her own way. It is Waymond, however that moves through his life with gratitude and leaning into the mundane through joy and accepting life for what it is and making the best/most of it. It is because of him, (who I feel is the heart and anchor of this film) that Evelyn is able to completely change her perspective and blend both how Waymond and Joy see the world. I also love how Joy is a metaphor. The family has lost their Joy and their joy (If that makes sense..) and we journey with them through each universe to learn how to be content with life even if it isn’t perfect or even if you haven’t turned into some great success. Because none of that actually matters. What matters is the love, the kindness and the joy we are able to give and find within all of this.

My issue is that Waymond is clearly not pulling his weight in this relationship which is why Evelyn is so anxious and stressed, he talks a good game and he IS right about Kindness, but he is wrong about contentment.
Being content with something that isn't compatible with your happiness, stability, or safety long term is to fall into slow and cruel entropy. Constantly trying to make up the labor of two people (or really a whole community) with one fallible, person who has depreciable assets like energy, bodily functionality, health, mental stability, etc that depreciate over time and severe stress. She has been doing almost all the work for ages.
She is annoyed with his attempts to inject levity into something deadly serious that she is not even shown appreciation nevermind appropriate compensation or equality in sharing that labor.
There is a clear mismatch here and him being sweet is not an equal amount of time and energy put into this marriage.
There was no attempt in this movie to rebalance that labor in the relationship, which is why conflict and potentially "pessimism" is an inevitability.
I love that you mentioned Eternal Sunshine, one of my favorite films along with EEAAO. They both do a superb job with weaving the threads of existentialism and surrealism into a love story.
Saw this movie in theaters with my girlfriend, knew absolutely nothing going in other than that it was incredible. Never has any piece of media outside of very select music ever connected with me like this, and it’s so grounding to relate this heavily to something that others can relate to as well. Helps remind me that we’re all going through our own individual struggles but anyone can understand on some level the same feelings. Such a beautiful movie. Immediately one of my favorites ever
I love the way this movie actually explores the philosophy of Nihilism beyond the popular surface value understanding mostly portrayed and exploring of the what the intent truly was to show that by rejecting the idea of set meanings and values, then anything can be of value and we are free to forge our own meaning and values in the world
The fight scene between Joy and Evelyn, I noticed that Joy squares up w her mom and Evelyn opens her arms for Joy, for a hug. And as Joy is throwing her mom punches, Evelyn is blocking them, she’s not hitting her back so I took that as she’s letting Joy express herself, she’s letting Joy feel after not listening to her. And I know at some point in a child’s life,they had thought about throwing hands with their parents. Now I would never go through with it, have the guts to. But that scene felt so close to home and I just wish my parents would have let me express my feelings without thinking I was disrespecting them or attacking them

This movie is incredible! I started crying right around the same time as Marketa. So much goes in, and so many emotions. It's crazy because movies often direct you to feel just 1 ir 2 things, but like life, this film has you feeling so much. So glad you watched this. And yes, I thought of this movie during Kimiko's fight on episode 4 of The Boys.
Awesome movie! Watched it 2 times in the theaters. For the sound. Beautiful. Lost my brother 1 year ago. He sought to take his own life. It was hard to get through. Especially for the family. Being strong for them was harder. Getting things done, and helping them all process the transition. Even now. My other brother hurts and feels that everything doesn't matter as well. I keep telling the family that life matters. Even little things. Kindness, moments of full happiness, even sadness, and anger. It all matters. Even putting googly eyes on a rock, gives it life. Strange that such a simple little thing can bring life to an object. Kindness gives this existence great meaning.

This film really does feel like a masterpiece. Visually amazing, beautifully written, fantastic acting, awesome choreography, and so on. The scene where Evelyn remembers all the great happy moments with her husband through their struggles choked me up more than anything else. She remembered how amazing of a partner he has been, his unconditional love powered them through everything. Just love this movie.

Words can't express my love for this film. But since I can't really just rely on incoherent squeezing in a text-based medium, and I seriously cannot do justice to it in a single comment, I'll just say that I saw this a little over a week ago and came out of the theatre feeling like...I could do anything. I have ADHD and executive functioning issues, and so much about this film speaks to me that...I don't know. It felt like it was directly answering my fears that I'd wasted my life or that I would never amount to anything, and that it was telling me I could be better than I gave myself credit for, and that my past experiences, even the terrible ones, had helped form who I was in ways that I could draw upon for strength. It's probably too early to say "this film changed my life," we'll have to see if the lessons stick. But even if just for a little while, it made me feel complete in a way that I often don't.
it kinda was directly addressing adhd. while daniel kwan was writing evelyn's character, he thought it might be appropriate for her to have undiagnosed adhd and his research into other people's experiences led to him to get evaluated for it. he found out that he had adhd through the process of writing this movie.

Has something to do with her sons bday party she couldn’t go to, so if she’s a part of the community and a regular, then it makes sense she may want to distract herself with it. Lots of people attend community parties. Also, it’s a diff universe I think
She didn't seem to enjoy her phone call she was on, she even acknowledged the laundromat worker "can't read minds, this is how it works" so she wasn't impatient with the business. I think her character was stressed out by whatever was going on at home and wanted to go somewhere she was wanted.

Watched this movie last night and I was blown away by the creativity, the array of genres, and the editing this movie had. I will say, being an Asian American coming from immigrant parents really hit close when I watched this movie. Hopefully, this film wins an oscar and many awards
Easily the best movie I've seen so far this year and possibly one of the best I've seen ever. This was such a fun viewing experience in the theater. The way they managed to seamlessly bring together so many different genres, stylistic and cinematic elements they way they did still blows my mind.
This is one of the best Sci-Fi movies of all time. Up there with Arrival and Eternal Sunshine IMO. Just spectacular!

This is the first ever movie that I’ve felt intense emotions the entire way through, wethers it’s happiness, laughter, sadness, cringiness. There really was never a still moment (metaphorically hahah, because the rock world was pretty still)

Such a multifaceted film that’s juggling all these different threads and somehow in the chaos of it all, accomplishes the feat to connect them all into a cohesive narrative. When you strip down the dressing of absurdity, it’s a family drama and the central protagonist beaten by life. Whether it’s from her disapproving father or her fraught relationship with her daughter, Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan make the absurdity of the multiverse manifestations of Evelyn’s, Joy’s, Waymond’s and even Gong Gong’s personal hang ups, disappointments, and regrets and their inability to articulate their frustrations. Even Deidre Beaubeirdre doubles as an antagonist and a character to help understand and unpack her relationship with her daughter and her husband. It’s one thing to create a movie of random stuff, but it’s that much more impressive to make it work and be a creative way of telling marital problems, stress, regrets, overcoming homophobia, being kind, and expressing love and care. Great film! Really overJOYed that it won 7 Academy Awards, sweeping, best picture, best actress, best supporting actress, best supporting actor, best original screenplay, best directors, and best film editing.

Best movie of 2022 IMO .
I can't believe Andy and Brian, from RUclips's MartialClub, got to fight *the* Michelle Yeoh! Props to Brian for being the guard who got the absolute piss repeatedly beat out of him throughout the entire movie.
you know this movie is good when it inspire people to start thinking about their own families and conflicts and trouble with their own family. :)

The first thought that came to my mind after watching this movie was that it felt like a fever dream, it felt like i was watching this while on something. it was amazing and one of the best movies i have ever watched.
My absolute favorite movie of the year. Cried so many times and got chills so much. 10/10

One thing they never translate is whenever Evelyn “mutters” in response to a new development, it’s usually her saying “神经病！” which means “This/You’re crazy”. But I guess in the context of the film it’s self-explanatory.
Well they translated it at least once, when she was in the elevator with Waymond, as "don't be stupid," which feels a bit mild. And later in the elevator, her 你真的疯了 did get translated as "you're crazy" when it's closer to "you've really lost it."

For everything that this movie made me feel, I think it may be my all-time favourite, now and forever. A lot of the ideas were unoriginal, but the execution was beyond phenomenal. It made me understand those ideas in a very real, relatable way, and it actually unnerves me how easily I followed the narrative internally. Like many others say, "nothing matters" went from depressing to freeing, and I watched it twice already. I absolutely, unashamedly cried and laughed at every key moment, because I felt like I really understood what was happening, or at least understood what it meant to me. To me, this movie is peerless.
It's kind of crazy how different reactions are. Some people (including me) are bawling by the end and some just... Don't cry.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long long time. The movie had me at Michelle Yeoh and then everything else about it--Daniels, james Hong, Ke Huy Quan, Martial Club--it's like someone read my mind to find out what I wanted to see in a movie and sprinkled it with some generational trauma and cultural specificity.
If only we could generate energy from spontaneously uttered WTFs, this movie would solve all our issues! 😂🥰
Its like a modern twist on Scrooge with instead of the Past, Present, Future as the vehicle for change, it's the multiverse.
