Make sure you have main shifter in neutral if you’re switching between HL H N or L. That’s why it was grinding. Sometimes it’ll still do it even if In that case you just turn the engine off and try again.

@@HHWheels I will keep it as a military style hmmwv. I will add a few comforts that will make it a little more road worthy. But for the most part just cleanup and replace/rebuild anything that's broke.

Awesome! I knew that thing wouldnt take too terribly much to get runnin, they are freakin tanks! Always wanted one!
Hahaha literally! We are super impressed. They are pretty tight (space-wise) to work on, but surprisingly simple 👌
Tanks are made of steel and have a variety of armor plates protecting the occupants. This Humvee is obviously not a tank!! There are no doors (and if they did have doors they'd probably be vinyl) and most of the chassis is made of aluminum.
Now M1A1 on the other hand...IS a tank!

Good stuff. If you haven't already, I'd suggest replacing the filter in the fuel water separator. It's that little canister behind the oil dipstick tube. You can also bleed the air from the system from the top of that same canister using a flathead screwdriver or a coin.

Those injection pumps need lubrication. The fuel that was available when they were designed had higher amounts of sulfur in it which helped lubricate the pump and injectors. Today's fuel us less than 15 PPM sulfur. So get you some diesel supplement like Power Service or Howes that adds lubrication. Your fuel system will last much longer

How much did you spend on parts overall?
Would you mind sharing how much you have in this? I am interested in buying one; not sure if it would be cheaper to go the auction route or buy one from a private seller who already did the title work?
This one was very low mileage and the popular motor so my buddy paid up for it. I believe 16k in the online auction. But then another 4k in parts. So all In running down the road 20k. But, it’s nice and extremely low mileage. You can buy them cheaper but, you may spend more in parts to get them running and driving so, my suggestion would be to spend more at auction if you can. At the 2:30 mark...that little yellow light above the starter switch is there for a reason!! It lights up and has the word WAIT on it because you're supposed to "wait" until it goes off before you try starting it!! This is because the glow plugs (it's a diesel engine thing) are heating up and you need to wait until they're done before attempting to start the engine!
Life is hard. It's harder if you're stupid and don't follow instructions!
