- TCG shows how they tow with their SUV. The 2018 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Ecodiesel.
These are the weighed numbers from the scale when we were loaded for a month long trip:
Steer axle: 3080
Drive axle:3700
Trailer: 5520
Gross weight: 12300
As for capacities:
Jeep capacities are
GVWR: 6,800lbs
Steer axle capacity: 3,200lbs
Drive axle capacity: 3,700lbs
Towing capacity: 7,200 lbs
Trailer capacities are:
GVWR: 6,500 lbs
GAWR: 3,500lbs (each axle)
Dry weight: 5,200 lbs (weighed when new)
Cargo capacity: 903 lbs
Full load of water: 397lbs

Dude this is exactly what I've been looking for! This gives me hope! So many freaking trailer Nazis out there. I have a gmc yukon with a 8200 pound towing capacity, a 1500 pound weight limit and hitch weight of 1000 and people are telling me I can't tow with that. Great video man.
As long as you are under all your weight capacities and double check your weights at the scale you should be fine. Don’t forget a good WDH with built in anti sway also that helps a ton. Thank you for the comment !
You'd be safer with the Yukon than this dude
@@FranklinHicks-qs4gs The Yukon TC is less than the Jeep's by 700 lbs but 400 lbs more payload so no go !

Awesome video. I tow a similar sized trailer, grey wolf 23mk that’s 28ft and around 6200lbs loaded. I’ve got the Hemi with coil suspension. We use the husky centerline anti sway hitch and it works great for us. People stop us at the gas pump shocked the Jeep can tow like this. The Hemi doesn’t even care the trailer is back there. I get 10-12mpg towing at 65mph. Best part is going and hitting the trails wherever we are and shocking the Wrangler guys with the off-road capabilities too.
Yes! You totally get it! Thanks and glad to see others out there using this Jeep for what it can do!
I tow with the older Jeep wk which has the Mercedes Benz diesel. It's great and is very powerful, I find the real limitation is the short wheel base which makes it more susceptible to sway. Sounds like you have it all sorted though which is great. Happy travels!
A great WDH will make all the difference when it comes to sway.but thank you and happy camping!
Thank you for leaving a comment! Happy camping!
Same here, I’ve hauled 9,000 trailer and truck towed behind my jeep diesel, depends on how it’s loaded too.
Great video. I drive a 2015 Jeep Summit Hemi and have been hesitant on towing a travel trailer with it. After watching your video I'm feeling good. Thank you
Thank you for the comment. Happy camping!
How big is your trailer?
Thanks for the video! I get tired of the same old crowd that says one must have a 1 ton truck to tow these small campers. Way to show them how wrong they are.
You’re welcome! The jeep is still humming along just fine after years of towing this rig.

I have a used 2012 Porsche Cayenne S that has a 7716 pound towing capacity and I tow a Lance 1685 camper no problem. The man I bought the camper from threw in the EAZ Lift weight distribution hitch he had. After having it for two years (PTSD..) I finally installed the solar, lithium batteries and 3000 watt Victron Inverter, and took it from Illinois up to Wisconsin for a two week shake down trip to the National Forest at two different campgrounds, Day Lake and then further North to Birch Grove, then put it in storage near Madison.
Thank you for sharing! I am picking up my 30ft Palamino Puma XLE tomorrow and have this exact same setup with my Durango.

@@WinkOutdoors Mine works beautifully! Honestly, it tows better than my 21ft trailer did.
We had an Explorer and towed our 21' camper and it was just absolutely terrible. Even though we were within all weight limits... it was so bad. Buying a truck was the best thing we did camping-wise.
Nothing wrong with that! We enjoy off roading a lot so the diesel jeep was a no brainer for us.
Super helpful
Thank you
We’re trying to sort out an almost identical setup…a 2018 Durango R/T AWD and a 24’ TT with bunks and slider. Durango has a 1200 lb payload limit, also with 7,200 towing capacity, and 13,100 GCVWR, and max 720 tongue weight. We are targeting a 6,500 lb GVWR trailer due to the GCVWR of 13,100, which would allow the Durango (5,381 lbs) + 1200 Payload + 6500 Trailer. Would be just under max @ 13,081 if fully loaded.
The problem we find, and I mentioned this in a different part of these comments, is that through many many sources, that arent salesmen, we’ve found you are supposed to exclude the WDH forces when you measure your tongue weight. Meaning if you were sitting on a scale, you are supposed to disconnect it when you figure out how much weight is actually on the tongue. I will link a very good writeup from a blogger which cites the legal source for this. Scroll down this article to the part about V-5 and Section 3.8.
Armed with this knowledge, I cant see any way that your tongue weight isnt over maximum with all that propane and generator mounted the way they are.
Also, this whole setup must leave almost nothing left for payload in the Grand Cherokee. If your trailer is at 6500 lbs, and you balance it at 10-11% on the tongue, that is, best case, 650 lbs of your payload, plus the weight of the distribution hitch itself, which is probably another 100 lbs, for 750. That leaves 300 left for all people and cargo in the Grand Cherokee. Not very much.
Having said that, its comforting to know that your GC is handling all this fine, because our Durango, with a slightly longer wheelbase and payload, should be fine also.
popupbackpacker.com/does-a-weight-distribution-hitch-increase-tongue-weight/
The most important part of my setup is staying under the jeeps GVWR, GAWR front and rear. Like you said we don’t have much weight to spare inside the jeep. But then again we are fine on towing capacity. Everything goes into the trailer when we tow. It helps we are a light family. There is also a few things I did to help out the jeeps weight. Such as moving the jeeps spare tire to the rear of the travel trailer and also the jack. Couple other small things I did was change the hood to a carbon fiber hood, and removed the DEF skid plate all together. That freed up over 100 lbs on the jeep. It has been towing this setup for over 60k miles now throughout the entire USA. Never has it skipped a beat from the scorching hot temps of the desert to the freezing mountain tops of Colorado.
I’m just terrified of what the highway patrol or a claims adjuster might say should an accident happen. I want to be verifiably underweight on every metric.
@@kurtdeilke7323 I don't blame you. Before we set out on our journey we loaded up and went to the scale to verify we were below every single capacity. I do not recommend hitting the road over any of them just for safety reasons. We have crossed some long barren roads when towing out west where we didn't see a single person for hundreds of miles. I would hate to have something give out because it's over on weight out there. Best of luck! I still have like 10 episodes I am currently editing before we catch up on where we currently are. I'll be releasing another episode today!
I have 21 Durango RT with Tow N Go package and brand new 2022 Grand Design Imagine 2800bh. Before it I was pulling Passport 2670, which was 1.5 feet shorter and about 1500 lb lighter, but hitch weight is about the same. Durango has 8700 lb of Tow capacity, 14100 GCVWR and tows like a dream in both cases. I use Curt Trutrack now. Before I towed Passport with 2011 Mercedes ML 350, hitch was reinforced by CanAm in Ontario.. It was good, but Durango is great.
You should not listen to weight police kool-aid and go crazy about this payload sticker. It is nothing but a very conservative recommendation and has no legal meaning. You should not exceed your GVWR and GCVWR, no arguments about this. However, in order to know your true payload capacity you should deduct curb weight from GVWR.
7100 lb - 5350 lb. Let's agree this is 1600 lb which is much better and can be validated on CAT scales.
Good luck.
@@eugenerost2842 the 2018 Durango RT has lower towing limits than the current one. Max towing was 7200 back then, max tongue of 720, and max payload of only 1200. I have found no evidence that I can legally disregard the max payload rating on the tire placard.
I will say, every SUV is going to be limited by payload. I don’t know why towing capacity is even mentioned. Towing capabilities should first consider tongue wt, next payload, then GAWR for the rear axle and FINALLY TT length to TV length ratio.
While true it is rare to be able to reach max towing capacity on any vehicle it is still possible. If I was towing alone I could easily get to the max of 7,200 lbs with a 720lb tongue weight and myself weighing only 150.
Even at that it would be tough. A 150 lbs person a full tank of fuel (yes that counts against payload) with a 720 lbs hitch wt would at or pretty darn close to max you at the allowed 1050 lbs of payload capacity.
However, the point is that as rare as it is to tow at max capacity for a SUV (or most LD trucks) you always hear of people playing on the towing capacity. The reverse should priority on payload, GVWR and Rear GAWR…..then whether or not you are at max towing capacity.
@@ourvexcursion5668 oh yea I hear you. The payload/GVWR is the main number when you have a family. Especially with an suv. We are happy we have been able to make this work throughout the USA.
Awesome video! I have 2019 high altitude with air suspension and the Hemi. I currently tow 26 ft camper weighing around 5700 all in. Thinking about buying another camper, dry weight is 5850, 32 feet long. If I pack everything up plus the family on the car, probably going to be 6200-6300 all in. Do you guys think the Jeep can handle this and it's safe? I also have the WDH. I'm somewhat worried about the length and weight on a bigger camper, but we're only doing small weekend trips an hour or two up the road.
This is great! Pretty much my setup. Thanks for the vid! I’m pulling a 2021 Rockwood 2509s with a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L no issues.

Rocking a 01 4runner with hitch sway and stabilizer and brake controller set up with a 26ft gray wolf
Awesome!
My 2020 Trailhawk has the auto-leveling suspension, which is so cool to watch when the hitch is attached (before the trunnion bars to our Curt TruTrack 17500 are put into place). It tows our 2021 Grand Design Imagine XLS 22RBE just fine on the flatlands (GVWR of 6995, but we never max it out and keep it at or just above 6000 lbs). We will not go anywhere with more than just small hills...we can hear it struggling even with just that. I agree, the payload is the main limiting factor for towing with the Trailhawk. We average about 10-12 mpg when towing on flatlands. The ride, however, is very smooth and, truthfully, can't even tell there is anything back there when towing. We were also very pleasantly surprised to see the RPMs of the Trailhawk never go above 2,000 when towing (accelerating it's a given they will go above 3,000). This is likely due to the max tow package that is standard on the Trailhawk. The oil and transmission temps also stay within range (I check them regularly on the instrument cluster).
They are absolute beasts. We have towed throughout the entire USA in the toughest mountains and it did just fine! We just towed 10 hours yesterday through a snow storm
@@tinycampergang572 Now, our Trailhawk is a gasser with the 5.7 HEMI (7200 towing capacity)...didn't know a diesel was even an option (or maybe my year it wasn't offered...then again, I took what they had on the lot because they knocked a ton off the sticker price, and this sucker has just about every option on it). This is likely why it struggles with anything but flatlands or small hills (like you would find in southwest Mississippi on I-55). We have a Ram 2500 on order so we can go to places with higher elevations than we can now (it will be a gasser because my husband does not know how to work on diesels...he likes to do the maintenance himself, and he doesn't like diesels), mainly because my husband hasn't had a new truck in over 20 years, and he totally deserves to get exactly what he wants.
Thanks a lot for this video man. I drive a X5 M50D and have recently ordered a 8.6 X 22ft Aluminum car hauler which I'm converting into a camper. It will weigh a lot less than what you're Towing but every video I've seen online says that I'm going to be blown away and sent to hell by some 18 wheeler or 5mls hr wind, And I just urgently need to trad in my BMW for a 1 ton😫😭
No worries! I highly recommend a solid weight distribution hitch with built in sway control. It’s worth it’s weight in gold when it comes to stability. The equalizer 4 point is the best bang for your buck in my opinion.

@@tinycampergang572 hey I got the Grand Cherokee Overland with the Hemi, trying to pull a u-haul car hauler with a moderatly built Wrangler TJ on it. On paper the weight looks okay comes right in at like 7000 lbs. Going from Carson to Drum. You think I'll have an issue ? Is 7000 pushing it?
@@ryanmcmeekin9285 my concern would be the hitch weight of the trailer going on to the grand cherokee. The good thing is you should be able to move the TJ forward or back to get the hitch weight where you want it to be. Definitely double check your towing capacity, payload capacity, axle capacities front and rear, and the GVWR of the grand cherokee you will be using. if you are below all those numbers and have a minimum of 10% trailer weight on the tongue it can be done.
Army....that explains a lot. Low iq is a disease.
What about Chrysler Pacifica towing with camper trailer RVs 6,000lbs? It safe ? And slow down like 45-65mph only ?
I have a 15 GC limited v6. We are thinking of picking up a 7x16' dual axle all wheel brakes enclosed trailer to haul our 4 motorcycles. Trailer weighs about 2400lbs, the bikes would be around 2200lbs.. Max tow rating is 6200lbs.

Should be great just make sure the weight is distributed as best as you can
Wow! What’s your front and rear axle ratings? How about your GCVWR? Where’s your tickets from the CAT Scales to show your weights?

How did you calculate the tongue weight of the trailer with all the added stuff close to the tongue?

@@tinycampergang572 Thanks a bunch. I rarely see videos on this topic.
@@RAZTubin no worries! Thank you for the feedback
I just got a 2021 grand Cherokee with tow prep package how does electronic brake work?
The tow package should have came with a wiring harness. Basically you connect that wire then hook up the brake controller and its good to go. You have to buy a separate brake controller.
The Tow Police think if you have anything other than a pop up trailer, you HAVE to have a F450. I'm wanting to tow a 26 foot trailer with a V8 quadra lift Grand Cherokee. The trailer I want (Mini Lite 2516s) is 5,200lbs dry but is nose heavy (810 DRY because of front kitchen), so I'm going to have to load it carefully to pull weight off the hitch without going below 10-12%. My question for you.....I looked up your trailer and it shows DRY hitch weight at 650 pounds. Add weight for bigger propane tanks, then 60 pounds when you will them, plus 40 for the two batteries, plus 150 for the generator, plus 40 for power jack and generator framing.....Have you weighed your actual tongue weight??? LOL! Thanks!!!!!!
Lol yes we have weighed it. Only a % of the weight from the generator and mount was actually transferred to the tongue. The total weight wasn’t just dropped on the hitch. The trailer took some of that weight also. Think of it as two people lifting a board with weight on it. Plus the weight distribution hitch did move some of that weight off of the hitch as well towards the front axle of the Jeep and back to the rear of the trailer. So it isn’t just dead weight on that hitch/rear axle once the weight distribution hitch is on. When setup for travel we got the hitch weight to 650 lbs. which left us with 400 lbs of cargo and personnel.
@@tinycampergang572 Your math is way off. You will be sadly disappointed (ticketed) if you take it to a scale - or get weighed by authorities. 650lb is tongue weight when it is dry. Your propane is 100lbs or more when you include the tanks. Your WDH is 80-100 lbs. When you distribute weight to the front axel it is still payload. You never add weight behind your axels to lighten the tongue. Amazing how many others are encouraged by this madness.
@@IH-nr7dx it has been to the scales multiple times and is under on every single spec. Nice try though. This setup has towed over 70k trouble free miles.

Tiny Camper Gang hey man cool informative vid. Just curious coming from a gasoline pickup owner, how much mpg are you getting based on average with that diesel with that setup??
Thank you! Sorry for the late reply we were camping for a month down at the Florida keys creating new footage. I also came from a gas pickup. We used to tow with our ram 1500 HEMI. Mpg truly depends on many variables. We average 13 mpg towing at 65-70 mph in normal conditions. Now, the lowest I’ve seen with a 18 mph headwind was 10 mpg and the highest I’ve seen was 17 mpg with a 14 mph tailwind. In the mountains if we are climbing up a lot we average 11-12mpg and if we are descending roughly 15mpg.
What Hood is that? Does it help with keeping the engine cooler? or just for looks? Was it difficult to install?
It’s a hellcat style carbon fiber hood. It does keep the engine and oil temp way down when towing. It was very easy to install
Do you have quadroalift? Can you still run weight distribution kit when the vehicle self levels?
Yes we do. The correct way to do it is to set up the WDH with the auto level option turned off.
Not smart to go kicking that tow bar without the cotter pin installed. If it kicked out that's going to whack you in the leg.
I had messaged you on instagram but that does not sound stock. Yours definitely has a more mean grunt to it.

@@tinycampergang572 no worries, thank you! It is highly appreciated!
What’s your actual tongue weight fully loaded ready to go camping, my guess including all the stuff in the front and the hitch and eq is close to 1,000 lbs
It is 600lbs when hooked up to the WDH and loaded for a month long trip.
Yeah but your legal tongue limit is measured without the WDH attached. That limit is based on how much weight sits on the ball of the hitch. The WDH redistributes from below the ball. So how much does that weigh not considering the wdh? I bet you are way over that Grand Cherokees tongue limit.
@@kurtdeilke7323 never weighed just the tongue of the trailer. The weights I got were when hooked up for a trip and the jeep alone. Under all capacities when set up for a month long trip.
Tiny Camper Gang, I don’t want to sound rude….BUT THERE IS NO WAY your Tongue WT is 650 lbs with that giant pass thru, the genny, batteries and 30 lbs duel tanks.
The dry tongue wt for a 2020 24RL Jayfeather is 625 lbs from Jayco’s own site. Everyone knows that you add a couple hundreds minimum after all said and done. So unless you are piling some 300-400 lbs of cargo to the rear jackknife bed….you are grossly under estimating your tongue wt. 73737boeing is correct….your tongue wt doesn’t go down cause you have a WDH. It just redistributes weight to trailer and front TV axle.
@@ourvexcursion5668 no worries. I got my tongue weight that way by doing a few things. It is indeed 650 lbs. first thing I did was remove a few factory things from the jeep. This lightened the jeep up which freed up some extra weight. I moved the spare tire, jack and removed the DEF tank skid plate which freed up approximately 158 lbs. the jeep spare tire, aux grey tank, grill mount went to the back of the rv which lightened up the tongue weight as well. There are ways to do things safely. You just gotta think outside the box. We have towed this camper roughly 60k miles so far across the USA multiple times and through all sorts of roads, inclines, conditions. The setup just works excellently. I’m actually backed up on over 8 additional episodes/states I need to edit. Thanks for commenting though !
What is your typical gas mileage when you are towing that RV with that Jeep?
13-13.5mpg with the off road upgrades at 70mph
I have a 2016 JGC SRT model with a 7200# tow capacity and 720# max tongue weight. The door jam says 1050# payload but when I searched up jeep and it shows for 2016 as 1350# for srt model. How do o figure out what is right?
Safest bet will be the door jam. Only thing is they just threw 1050 lbs payload on all higher trims. Most accurate way will be to take it to a car scale and get it weighed.. subtract that weight against the GVWR of the vehicle which is on the other sticker on the door. The tongue weight is calculated to be 10% of the trailer weight.

Drive axle:3700
Trailer: 5520
Gross weight: 12300
As for capacities:
Jeep capacities are
GVWR: 6,800lbs
Steer axle capacity: 3,200lbs
Drive axle capacity: 3,700lbs
Towing capacity: 7,200 lbs
Trailer capacities are:
GVWR: 6,500 lbs
GAWR: 3,500lbs (each axle)
Dry weight: 5,200 lbs (weighed when new)
Cargo capacity: 903 lbs
Full load of water: 397lbs
@@tinycampergang572I would guess that Jayco is near or at GVWR of 6,500 lbs The Jeep as a payload of just under 1,200 lbs ! When I add the average weight of cargo I come to ± 700 lbs than add an additional tongue weight of ±650 lbs. The jeep is stressed ! Obviously my numbers could be debated but that's the fun fun of this exercise. Thanks again.

@@tinycampergang572 This is super helpful. I have a 2015 JGC Summit EcoDiesel and am considering a very similar trailer. Is this all loaded up or dry weights?
@@matthewchristofferson8791 no problem! Thank you for the comment. This was all loaded up for a month long trip.
@@tinycampergang572 Thanks, Mike! Looking forward to more videos!
Get a truck
Had one. We enjoy the diesel jeep much better for towing cross country. Thank you for the comment though!
