Thank you to @hsfhanaa for the idea! Today I decided to analyze which kpop girl group dances have changed in the past couple years to cater more to Tiktok (featured groups consist of Blackpink, Aespa, and (G)i-dle). In the front end of my video, I showcase a brief history segment in which I show where the trajectory of choreography was leading us before Tiktok (starting all the way from the first generation) -- this is where Girls Generation, Itzy, 2NE1, and many more are featured! Subscribe if you want to see more content like this and comment your opinions/other videos you want me to do! (That being said, please be respectful of everyone’s opinions in the comment section down below).

Honestly, the "Tiktokification" of K-pop dances isn't always because of Tiktok. Idols are still human, and dancing with such powerful choreography and constantly performing multiple songs WHILE singing is almost impossible, even for one trained in that area. I think ITZY deserves some slack, those girls sing live and if you've seen their older choreography, it's pretty much a struggle to get through one song performance. ITZY has also sustained multiple injuries because of this and had to "Tiktokify" their choreography so that it wouldn't continue to hurt them.
I think a bad example of "Tiktokification" in K-pop dances has to be Blackpink's 'Pink Venom,' that dance is so simple that it just exposes the simplicity of the actual production of the song. I think that a good example of a mix of both is IVE's Lovedive, it's simple, just like Pink Venom, but it perfectly encapsulates the essence of the song, while still making it perfect for TikTok and a solid Choreography for performances.
I think that groups like ATEEZ and LE SSERAFIM are actually giving us solid K-pop choreography, that goes hard and is great for others to use on the platform, without sacrificing a great performance.

honestly ive never been too fond of tiktok dance challenges and i think they have peaked during lockdown 2020 to 2021, so kpop choreos who fixate on becoming a tiktok challenge just come off as rly inauthentic, unoriginal and out of touch with reality to me. i do see some kpop songs trend online from time to time (new jeans being a great example here) but companies effort to jump on any given trend is what makes kpop even more inauthentic to me than it already is. i feel like it wasnt as direct back then, now everything seems very much manufactured.
i do love seeing my favorite idols interact but 1. a lot of tiktok dance challenges arent appealing to me and 2. a 15 second video of them not even looking at eachother and smiling and making hand gestures at the end is just overly awkward. ntm the horrific white washing and overly edited videos… they also record them in very ugly places such as staircases or hallways. whenever i come across an idol doing a dance challenge or any sort of trendy tiktok challenge i skip the video. maybe ive just grown out of kpop since i mainly keep up with youtube content and their music releases and i have never been interested in any short form content (specifically reels, TikToks and yt shorts).
the only tiktok challenges who have been interesting to me are marks mommae challenge and the boyz sunwoos water challenge.

I noticed this shift too especially with groups like Itzy. Their choreo went from people struggling to recreate it, to very easy to mimic moves. I just hope kpop finds a nice balance because virality is essential for kpop and that means easier to mimic choreo. Right now, however, it seems kpop is focusing solely on virality and not individuality which made these groups so enviable from the beginning. With 5th gen, the groups really only focus on being viral and kinda lose that individuality that 3rd and 4th gen have. But we're only at the beginning of 5th gen so hopefully more groups become less like content machines.

Sure, a lot of their 'point moves' in the chorus are supposed to go viral, but in terms of levels, fluidity/smoothness, formations switches etc. their hook choreos are clearly different and more difficult to pull off than the examples used in this video.

I do agree with your statements, not only the choreography, the chorus' song itself right now is so tiktokfication. Although, I argue because it's KPOP afterall. Ignoring 1st gen (I dont know a lot of them), since 2nd gen even the chorus choreography usually the more simplify than the other part of the song since it was the only part for all of them to breath but yes, nowadays the structure is pretty funny lol. Especially since 4th gen, they usually have more complex choreo and suddenly boom, the super simplify choreo which kinda mind blowing. Not complaining tho, it's still fun to watch the challenge and after all, it's a business and entertainment industries thus they need marketing to be able to profit, it's a strategy. It's just simply globalization and KPOP.

I don’t think they were “tiktokified”. The dances in back in the day (2nd gen groups, some 3rd gen up to probably 2017ish) were a range of difficulty level, and there were songs that had what some would call simple choreo or even with trendy chorus pieces wtv. Basically, dances have always been like this and they’re pretty much going back to that possibly for the artists’ sake but yes also because of the catchy trendy movements (the “point” dances/moves). They always have been focused on having dances with a good point move (an example like today would be IVE’s Love Dive; but everyone wants their ‘Tell Me’, ‘Gee’, ‘Shake It’, or ‘Sorry Sorry’ moment - and the list goes on). I think that never changed.
What I think happened is that K-pop fans, especially new ones who haven’t looked too much into older groups or even ‘nugu’ groups, have gotten too used to the trend of extremely hard choreography (or more active choreography wtv) to the point that any simplifications are just boring and under stimulating to them. There has always been a mix, I just think those fans are starting to realize or see it lol. Meanwhile on the other hand, some people are enjoying the fact that simple choreography is back and they can participate in covers (or TikTok challenges now/again).
Anyway, I like both and I’m glad to see the return of it. One is nostalgic being a fan of 2nd gen+ songs and choreo, the others are good workouts lol. Hope they can find a balanced mix and if not big groups, there’s always little ones who might. 🩷

I literally just thought this watching the choreo to BoA's new song compared to all the dancing I've seen her do in the past. I prob would've noticed sooner if i was more into 3rd and 4th gen (started with BoA back around '01 and also big into 2nd Gen WG and 2NE1, aside from many other less popular 1st/2nd gen artists)

I've never been into K-pop tiktok dances 💁‍♀️ i like the fact that we can get interactions between idols through that, but K-pop is officially losing its meaning. To some extent, those strict rules had kept K-pop together, not that i am saying dating ban and starvation should be done. There were a few rules that had kept it together. Now kpop has become westernised, just as it is becoming more and more relevant we see the original K-pop drifting away.
But what's the point of those tiktok interactions when they'll act like complete strangers afterwards anyway? We didnt have this thing in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gen, though we got interactions friendships and many more bonds. On the other hand, locals got a taste of their hate, they had to gulp down the fact that they've been dancing and vibing to kpop, but i also see some ruining the choreos for me. I don't want to see that. Some of these Tiktokers use the same dance moves gain and again and in kpop songs it kind of checks off the vibe for me. I would still prefer to go back to those old times but change is important. Good thing or bad, we somehow saw it coming and if we didn't atleast we know what the futhre might have for us.

Super shy’s middle chorus is known for being so much easier than the first chorus.
    The difficulty rankings go from
    6/10- first chorus
(Straight arms, pretty intense, a lot of popping and force applied in certain areas)
    8/10- prechorus
(Waacking everywhere, super intense, slight pivots)
    2/10- second chorus
(Straight arms, light force, repeated moves, barely any leg movement, simple waacking and hip movements)

I don't think so. Just because a dance goes viral doesn't mean it was made for TikTok. Take for example Hype Boy, one of their most viral dances to date. It is neither front facing nor repetitive nor any of the other criteria companies try to meet to make a "Tick-Tock-able" dance in the chorus section. Super Shy has tons of formation changes in it's chorus, ditto is once again everything but stationary with it's formations, as is OMG, ETA and Cool With You. Attention has lot's of formation and level changes, etc. NewJeans are simply insanely popular and people love their dances, specifically because they are NOT typical TikTok dances.

@@Gasmaya Bruh, doesn't matter if a GROUP has changes formation in other songs, this is about very specific ones (See for example Itzy who had super integrate choreos during debut but also put out stuff like Cheshire which is clearly a chorus made for TikTok (ie, all front facing, no significant changes in position, literally no foot work, simple arm movements etc.). And besides an argument you could make for Super Shy I do not see that in NewJeans. And even that is all but a simple choreo (looking at the prechorus here). I agree that their songs are too short, it is a change that TikTok has made for sure in kpop and music in general, but that has nothing to do with the choreo lmao. I am only talking about dancing here, which is what the discussion here is about.
