  • FRANK: "The rocking little teenage combo known to the universe as BLACK SABBATH...." Frank was apparently a fan. Audio extracted from "Archangel Rides Again." The Visual is extracted from the Black Sabbath DVD, LIVE @ the Santa Monica Auditorium, 1975. This was aired numerous times on DON KIRSHNER'S ROCK CONCERT TV SERIES. Frank and The Sab's shared the same record label, Gibson SG's, mustashes, power chords, etc. etc.

I was there. The video is from Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. I remember Zappa saying something about Tony breaking a string and that he would be right out. I'm hearing Snowblind, but the opening number was Symptom of the a universe.

I was in 3rd row section c. It was a mess after Nugent left the stage. The crowd wanted more and they ruined the stage with bottles. We had to move to not get hit. I thing Sabbath was pissed that the opening act got such attention plus I think it was ozzy’s birthday. Circus magazine did an article on it. I just turned 15 a month earlier. My second concert. It was awesome!

I can't remember exactly but I do remember that Frank actually liked Black Sabbath and found their music a breath of fresh air ,he loved Tonys use of mean sounding chords and calling out the establishment on topics from abortion and Vietnam to the drug epidemic and corrupt politicans ,aside from Zappa no other band was ripping the establishment bullshit with every new album ,I remember reading in Frank's book where he thought Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top and Tony Iommi were 2 of his favorite guitarists .

He thought their image matched their music, and that made them more authentic.

Yeah, I can hear a Black Sabbath influence in some of Zappa's mid seventies stuff. I think you meant Eddie Van Halen's fave guitarists were Billy Gibbons and Tony Iommi and Clapton and Holdsworth, whereas Zappa stated in his book that his fave guitarists were Yngwie Malmsteen and Allan Holdsworth.

There is actually a recording of Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd though. That's pretty close!

I always thought Frank had a "heavy metal" look---even though he was decidedly not "heavy metal" musically

Does anybody understand what he is saying, apart from the "rocking teenage combo"?

" A rocking teenage-combo known to the residents here as 'Black Sabbath'. They're having a bit of a problem, see...The tension is mounding up, and it will continue to mound up...I think they broke one of their guitar strings, or something,????"
