I tried moving to Bali in 2023, after about 8 years of digital nomadship (moving every 2-5 months). I felt starved for a community of writers, thinkers, etc. I have come back to the west and am trying to figure out a long term base with enough networking possibility along my interests. I do believe I could have done it better! Taken more initiative in finding friends, etc. I was a bit of a hermit, just writing all the time--and going through some chaotic personal stuff as well. If I went back with more discipline and outdoor time, I think I would do better. I will watch your journey with curiosity. Anyway fantastic vid as always. Your "Life isn't meaningless, the question is" is one of my favorites of all time
Very interesting philosophy communicated in a captivating video. Good job Angelo! I would love to hear your perspective on the issue of free will (specifically concerning choice since it came up in this video), as that's been an issue that I've been thinking a lot about in the past months. Wish you all the best mate😃
I have no idea why the idea that “a bowman, though he might enjoy making arrows, is making them for a purpose, not for joy of making them itself” makes you conclude that “you are a heterotelic being”. 15:28 You’re assuming that just because there’s an objective to an activity, it couldn’t be performed for its own sake, 15:50 then based on that assumption you claimed that “you don’t exist for your own sake but to bring about that which does”, so you essentially claim that people don’t exist just to exist, but to do something (more). I thought that was interesting cuz that notion seems to oppose all the ancient philosophies that tell us that life / happiness is just about living itself, and that existence is there for its own sake. Moreover it feels like I should mention that “a heterotelic being” literally wouldn’t work because it wouldn’t have a reason to, unless it is subject to an external force that dictates its actions and therefore doesn’t need to feel motivated on its own, like a computer. But then you seem to directly contradict this previous statement by explaining that “the ultimate Autotelic activity is the purpose of subject object duality itself” - so after all you say that existence is there just to exist, that’s the “ultimate autotelic activity”. Despite this contradiction, until here I thought that this video makes sense. But then you go on to say “activity precedes actors” and a bunch of other stuff with no apparent connection to all that was said previously. So there you just lost me and I honestly don’t get what you’re trying to say in this video. It felt like you were trying to say that “the dichotomy between heterotelic and autotelic activity is a false one, as all activity is ultimately aimed at the same sense of goodness that transcends the actor and motivates him to act in the first place” but then you make this point that “activity precedes the actor and therefore the value of the action is neither extrinsic nor intrinsic” - ???? if by now you’re confused and have to try hard to understand what I’m saying or if there’s even a point in trying to understand then you’ll know what it’s like to watch this video. This comment is a reflection of that I literally have no idea what point you’re tying to make or why. I thought of sex as an example. It’s definitely a valuable activity, no matter if viewed subjectively or objectively, but so what? What does this have to do with whether the actor precedes the activity or vice versa? Edit: after watching the rest of the video the point becomes obvious, but it doesn’t really explain why you talked about this stuff I mentioned here (and I’d argue that this is all just a very overcomplicated way of saying “you’ll die anyway so making yourself the most important thing in life will make you miserable”).
I had a similar response when listening to the video. Was all good until near the end, then it almost started sounding vaguely religious to me. I feel like adding my own perspective on it: "The purpose of life is to beget life. If any given life is capable of giving itself more purpose than that, then whatever purpose it happens to decide upon, is its purpose. Purpose beyond reproduction and survival, is subjective to the individual." Or in simpler terms "Life is meaningless, so make your own, and find happiness, don't give up early."
Awesome. Waking up to a good brain pickle. The conflict between being a human being and a human doing. As Neo realises in the Matrix during his discussion with the Architect, the problem is choice. Thanks

I love this concept, and it aligns well with many other ideas I've found myself exploring as of late in more spiritual areas. I appreciate how it breaks it down into a well-considered philosophical argument. It brings to mind Plato and Aristotle's observation that we are all teolological beings, with purpose, and I believe they use the metaphor of the arrow and target to describe that idea as well. You can try and figure everything out (an impossible task I would argue) or you can SURRENDER to life, the universe and everything and let the answers (if there are any) - come to you.
I noticed you mentioned Bernardo Kastrup in the beginning who actually has the answer to your question which is essentially the "ultimate why". Bernardo essentially claims that we are God's/nature's way of becoming meta-conscious of themselves and in achieving this awareness we can bring an end to all suffering and evil that is being self inflicted. Curious what your thoughts on that are.
Two questions: Doesn’t your conclusion anthropomorphize reality - in other words, imbue it with rational logic/intelligence (e.g. “this exists because”)? And Can’t we exist just cause? Not for the sake of something else or for the sake of ourselves?
@@nowuc it anthropomorphises the mind, the source of your sense of seperate self, which is as much a part of reality as anything else Also not sure how to answer the second question, if you’re asking whether that’s theoretically possible I’d say yes? But i don’t believe it to be the case
@@AngeloSomers I'm very new to all this stuff, but it seems odd to me for us to be saying we belive or disbelieve stuff like that when we're so ignorant of reality. Like it seems silly to me to suppose we could really know anything that deep. Idk
For that second question, all of these ideas are still on the table and it's really about picking the one that allows you to live how you inherently want
Does put a new perspective on why religions are more effective at bringing solace than modernism. Strange that answer to modern meaninglessness is just humility and good external purpose.
idk don’t u think the ultimate aim of life is intimacy? Like forming connections and relationships? The attempt to bridge Self & Other? Isn’t that why we developed music, language and art? Why we have sex? To experience or create something other than ourselves as a medium to bridge the gap between us? It could be that differences aren’t illusory. Maybe we’re all just a particular organization of activity. idk maybe I’m just misunderstanding what ur saying. If that’s the case, I apologize.
My main question now is would an action that could be defined as endocretic become heterocretic based on intention or will. For example listening to music was stated to be an endocritic action only serving for itself but what if you are trying to escape using music. If you have negative thoughts and you listen to music to silence your brain wouldn’t that make listening to music a heterocretic activity to a endocretic value of avoiding pain.
Some feedback. I think the music was supposed to enhance the profoundness and depth of the moment, but it is distracting and anxiety inducing if I am completely honest.
I'm your oldest follower. If you want to come back to life, try a neuroscience based meditation. It took many years, but I was finely able to answer and EXPERIENCE..."Who Am I?" My answer is also compatible with emerging neuroscience. Best wishes
This would be a great way to look at the world, finding meaning outside of oneself. But how o how do you know it actually is this way? Aren't you just assuming that we are heterotelic in the pursue of autotelic values?
This was an very good take, is there anyway you could link a transcript of everything you said? I would love to be able to read your argument and annotate it.
If I'm not wrong about you saying to become "God" is the ultimate desire, I think the "heterotelic" view of reality has something in common with "The Egg" by Andy Weir. I also came to a somewhat similar thought after realizing that no amount of materialistic achievements will fulfill someone because everyone is doomed to die and to bypass this essentially means to overcome "Death" himself.
Dr. of Illogical Rhetoric Angelo Swearing to uphold his Kakistocratic oath to obey the heterotelic oaf to "last, do no harm .!. 🤣🤣🤣 F'ing Sistine Chapel Ceiling WTF was this supposed to be? .!. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 93/93
This seems influenced by Eastern fate beliefs. I found that train of thought to be extremely liberating. It's much more supported by zoology or even ecology in general that we're part of a network reacting to unknowable ripples in time and space.
I love listening to you think, and you certainly pose very interesting points. Thank you for writing out your thoughts and posting them online. I am a little confused as to why you seem to deny the existence of any supernatural and then go on to define the "autotelic substance." If such a substance exists, doesn't it have to exist in a realm above the physical? For if it is in the physical, and the physical comes to an end (heat death), then it is like the 'autotelic' man - it has no value. Well, many western religions define God as the source of such an autotelic substance which preexists and predefines actions. I'm curious then about why you deny the existence of a god.
18:10 the very first thing that popped into my head when you described that part about how people's frustration with the structure of life and wanting revenge against it got me thinking about how that thought process could be immediately exterminated upon the realization that reality was there PRIOR to you being born....therefore you ARE NOT the center of everything, and never were. Its pretty simple common sense logic if you ask me.
This is amazing my friend. But I will give you a word of advice from the perspective of a viewer and that of a content creator. Make your scripts easier to understand. You are just giving out information, but it is too much to handle, you do not give us the viewers breathing room to understand it, digest it and be able to use it as context for the next point
Sorry if I misunderstood your video but, doesn't the message in this video "Your existence is heterotelic" contradict your video about the meaning of life? "Life isn't meaningless, the question is" Still, love you mate. Thanks ❤️

Two questions:
Doesn’t your conclusion anthropomorphize reality - in other words, imbue it with rational logic/intelligence (e.g. “this exists because”)?
And
Can’t we exist just cause? Not for the sake of something else or for the sake of ourselves?
@@nowuc it anthropomorphises the mind, the source of your sense of seperate self, which is as much a part of reality as anything else
Also not sure how to answer the second question, if you’re asking whether that’s theoretically possible I’d say yes?
Finally
My main question now is would an action that could be defined as endocretic become heterocretic based on intention or will. For example listening to music was stated to be an endocritic action only serving for itself but what if you are trying to escape using music. If you have negative thoughts and you listen to music to silence your brain wouldn’t that make listening to music a heterocretic activity to a endocretic value of avoiding pain.
this was a lot to digest
Some feedback. I think the music was supposed to enhance the profoundness and depth of the moment, but it is distracting and anxiety inducing if I am completely honest.
This is it.
Is this like an elaborate description of absurdism?
I'm your oldest follower. If you want to come back to life, try a neuroscience based meditation. It took many years, but I was finely able to answer and EXPERIENCE..."Who Am I?" My answer is also compatible with emerging neuroscience. Best wishes
So who are you? I'm curious 😅
Can you elaborate ? Never heard of what u r talking about
I am what I am
This would be a great way to look at the world, finding meaning outside of oneself. But how o how do you know it actually is this way? Aren't you just assuming that we are heterotelic in the pursue of autotelic values?
Good shit.
Goated
This was an very good take, is there anyway you could link a transcript of everything you said? I would love to be able to read your argument and annotate it.
If I'm not wrong about you saying to become "God" is the ultimate desire, I think the "heterotelic" view of reality has something in common with "The Egg" by Andy Weir. I also came to a somewhat similar thought after realizing that no amount of materialistic achievements will fulfill someone because everyone is doomed to die and to bypass this essentially means to overcome "Death" himself.

@ DIdnt know that....interesting. Thank you for the info.
In other words, does heterotelic mean "faith" or commitment toward some higher power ergo God/nothing/infinity/the absolute/Truth etc...?
You still are, you just want money now
18:10 the very first thing that popped into my head when you described that part about how people's frustration with the structure of life and wanting revenge against it got me thinking about how that thought process could be immediately exterminated upon the realization that reality was there PRIOR to you being born....therefore you ARE NOT the center of everything, and never were. Its pretty simple common sense logic if you ask me.
A large part of who you are now was there prior to you being born.
@ indubitably.
@@thepooaprinciple5144 if people ignored their need for food like they ignore their need for consciousness, they would not get very far.
@ I've done pretty damn good if you ask me. But im an extremely rare person so I'd say im an exception not the rule.
I agree, Very much. With elegance and grace, well done.

16minutes ago is absurd😮😮😮
My god, that’s so interesting!
@abcdefzhij mindboggling stuff wish i wasnt so fried so i could digest it
Wait how did you conclude from nothing but your own existence that there is only one autotelic substance?
So in conclusion what do you mean? I couldn't understand 75.45% of the video
Interesting....
Nice haircut 👌
This is amazing my friend. But I will give you a word of advice from the perspective of a viewer and that of a content creator. Make your scripts easier to understand. You are just giving out information, but it is too much to handle, you do not give us the viewers breathing room to understand it, digest it and be able to use it as context for the next point
great video cutie
I seem to discern that you have the wisdom to understand what you say, but I'm not sure if you can see what it means.
Who am I? I am the watcher at the end of time to stop time from ending.

Sorry if I misunderstood your video but, doesn't the message in this video "Your existence is heterotelic" contradict your video about the meaning of life? "Life isn't meaningless, the question is" Still, love you mate. Thanks ❤️
@@John-du5kr “at the layer of abstraction in which you live your daily life” - in other words, the “david” identity (which is illusory) this illusion exists for heterotelic reasons, but it’s formed entirely of an Autotelic substance (existence itself)
@@AngeloSomers I think I understand. Your identity Like "John" for example exists for something else. But it's essence exists for the sake of itself. I'll still give it a rewatch though. Man, I hope you make it far in life. It's nice to see thinkers within all this AI slob.
