never got the "watch people game" thing. i play because i like PLAYING a game. not watching some dodo min maxing a build for 3 hours, or do a dungeon marathon stream, boasting on their sweatlevel pro-ness.... no time for that, i rather game.
I totally agree. I'm part of that older crowd, 54, been playing TES games since Arena in 94. I DO watch a few Twitch streamers, but not every stream. Thats due to timing, my favorite is out of England and I'm on the East Coast U.S. He mostly does Housing, but also other things and once in a while other games. I very purposely don't watch PvP that's PC NA, to me it's a form of cheating unless they are on the same Alliance I am. Example, I was in IC and watching Jhart, when he started it was housing, then he decided to go run IC. I was on DC character, he was on AD, running with AireSummer... both Streaming. AireSummer had a seriously large group, I had been evading them , but also picking off stragglers ( not lowbies, I leave them alone). I wasn't watching her ( I DO watch her housing streams) so it was all what I could see. When Jhart came in I shut Twitch down, and decided to go do something else, as their were no decent sized DC groups.. just AD and EP.... so sewers. I prefer RUclips vids, I can listen while driving if it's about updates, New content or anything not really visual... kinda hard to watch a housing tour driving!! But while I think Zos does need a better reward system, that wouldn't get me watching Streamers... that's me though.
@DominaRPG incorrect ... by that logic black dessert online is bigger than ff14 and we all know ff14 as been the number two mmo in terms of population after wow for years now . steam is what you would be looking at instead although thats not exactly accurate either but it is a MUCH better indicator than twitch.
I'm 52, I've played since beta with a few long breaks in there. I watch twitch while I'm playing, I usually have it on in the background (on a second monitor) and I watch for the community I've found there. I've made a lot of friends through Twitch/ESO and they are mostly in my age range. But, I would agree, ESO does attract a different crowd, a lot of older players who love the TES series and tend to be very solo-play focussed, but that's exactly what drew me to twitch, I can solo-play with a community & group up when I need/wish with friends rather than random strangers. My son & his friends did play in high school but MMO's are a commitment and a time sink and they move on to new games pretty quickly.
ESO isn't fun to watch though. There really is no hype moments or reasons to tune in. Not really pushing hardcore world first type content. No real nailbitin 1v3 PvP moments. Doesnt mean ESO is a bad game, it means ESO is lacking those exciting moments that make a game fun to watch on Twitch. I've always said ESO needs to do more to cater to the hardcore playerbase too. It seems they may be listening with some of the things coming in gold road. But ultimately, ESO is a casuals game.
It's really about being an interesting person and someone fun to shoot the breeze with. I normally have streamers on in the background listening to them talk while I play.
ESO is hardly Anthem, Spider-Man, or sometimes Destiny where movement in and of itself is a highlight. The skills are fun in tandem with one another when performed but do not have the spectacle of modern games. The enemies also do not respond to hits in a visceral way. Playing it is fun but if you’re watching it, you’re in it for the person. Just my two septims.
ESO content is weird, I really don't care about the latest and newest build especially since its everywhere when it is announced. I really enjoy video essays, and yours are right up my alley.
So, there are a fair few teenagers/young adults, social guild I'm part of keeps going "oh, you applied and failed to disclose you're underage, bye" issues. Because we don't WANT that drama. It's not a massive pool, but every few months one pops up. Several parents who play with their younger kids, as well.
Couldn’t skip your adds , why? Also the game is designed to keep you hooked but let’s be honest.. there are to many good titles to expect players to play year round. Especially mid summer. Check the numbers after the next patch, not at the end of one. Just an idea. ESO is a game that requires you to take breaks to enjoy and if you don’t you, may turn into Cadwell in RL. GODBLESS
It’s 2nd screen content. I’d never rather watch someone play OVER playing myself. But watching buds stream, or youtube videos on a 2nd screen is fun to me 🤷🏻♂️
It would be a hard game to create content for. A lot of the YT videos are new very dated, some other games I watch the twitch content is basically what feeds their main money making source which is RUclips. If the YT video doesn’t have long life, like right now any content before the next chapter, there’s really no point to having a scheduled twitch stream. Once the chapter releases then maybe for a few months. I mean that basically explains this video too. It’s easier to read a question from a forum and release a RUclips video about it, than create regular content on twitch which will be dated very quickly.

I'm 44, and I actually PLAY the game on PS5. I only have a Twitch account for when games I play have "Drops." I don't watch other people play games. There's no excitement in it, for me.
If I had to hazard a guess about why ESO doesn't get a whole lot of streaming attention is because (1) the game's core player base is older and (2) the game isn't very cinematic/dramatic The game can be exciting to play but that doesn't necessarily translate to watching. I used to watch dungeon clears so I could see mechs, but most ESO videos are educational. We seem more interested in learning about builds and mechs. If you look at a game like D2, you have cleaner line of sight, more adrenaline in plays, and a younger (and far more toxic) player base In a "good" ESO run, everything is boring. A good run in ESO is where all players have managed and mitigated chaos. That means no drama, that means a boring video/stream
I also think overland difficulty is a factor here. Video points out that anyone can do about 95% of the game's content without a problem (or maybe with minimal problem). Who is going to watch that? If overland posed a challenge, playing overland would draw a crowd. There is a reason that people watch Elden Ring streams; they don't care if the player succeeds or fails because it'll be entertaining either way
There used to be GrimHallow, stamblade pvp guy who I loved watching but his YT channel has been inactive for a while now. KristoferESO was doing a great job with his top battles but he moved to NewWorld. SypherPK did great stuff way back in his time here too. Also Kevduit with his funny videos. All of them are pretty much gone from ESO. Alcast, Deltia also kind of absent, popping from time to time to keep the channel from dying.
I like watching Skyrim and Oblivion playthroughs, but not so much ESO. I’m much more interested in theorycrafting and build videos for ESO. I have 10 characters and they all have quested in most of the zones, so I’m not inclined to watch someone else play them. Having said that, I have watched a few ESO newbies just to see their reactions.
Very simple answer imo. First off the number of people on eso is more than those other games. Second i have played this game for a very long time and over the years I have seen a massive amount of veteran players and content creators leave. More so than any other mmo I follow. They chase away vet players and appeal to casual players. And more than anyone they chase away competitive pvp pve players. Zos just doesn't understand you can appeal to both audiences. And they also don't understand veteran players are the ones that care about adding things to the community, not a revolving door of casuals. I mean ffs I was watching a gw2 stream last night with 3k viewers. Double the average of the entire eso category on 1 stream. On a game with less players. Its crazy. And its just lost potential.
ESO actively strive to be non competitive. Especially in PVP. They nerf competent players constantly. They cater to the casual players because of $$. Casual players want to play pvp, but they can’t compete so they stop playing. To retain the casuals, ZOS will nerf the high performing builds. Nerf the players who put in time and effort to be competent. A lot of people quit PVP because of this. Why spend hours planning and grinding to be the best, when ZOS will step in and nerf you 2 months later. It’s awful.
Yea ultimately ESO is a much more casual MMO, but I definitely think they’d benefit by adding a reward structure and more competitive elements. They’re very good at attracting new players, but need to work on long term player retention a little. They largely try to raise the floor and lower the ceiling a bit to appease that and decrease the skill gap, but it doesn’t seem like they’ve found a way to do so effectively as of yet. There’s also a much larger % of the player base that engages in PvE than PvP and frankly a lot of PvP nerfs are PvE in origin and vice versa. If they could implement a way to balance them separately, I think you’d see a lot more happy people :)

playing < watching and yeah 99% of the streamers are hot garbo sellout streams telling their viewers to follow sub or hit the bell every 10min like a tv ad. it gets annoying
People only watch on twitch if the game or media is popular or the content creator is good enough to find a way to keep an audience no matter what the game or media is. Sorry to say but most ESO streamers are extremely boring to watch and the game itself is pretty boring to watch so it's no wonder why there are no numbers there
Yeah ESO fans are all 30+ really. Its a game for the older mates. Lotta stuff that wowed me as a kid is different now. Harder to watch things, never was a twitch user, dont even have an account, I just cant watch shit on twitch, its so annoying and ugly. Just creators are weak and shills.

Most popular games are PvP related and the PvP in ESO is not great to watch at all. Need a competitive aspect, team vs team in a ranked environment
streaming requires viewer engagement and entertainment you cant just stream a game and keep viewers
