David is a strong, powerful classic name. No matter where you’re from or where you go, people are familiar with it. It used to be a perennial Top 10 name and I always had other Davids in class. But as an adult, I haven’t worked with many Davids, particularly younger ones. There’s definitely many famous Davids that weren’t mentioned like Duchovny, Grohl, Foley, Grusin, Davies, Lynch, Crosby, Edmunds, Boreanaz. The list is endless.

I have a brother, a father, an uncle, a cousin, a 2nd cousin, a brother-in-law, 2 cousins-in-law, and a nephew all named David (plus a few I may be forgetting). My wife and I have made the executive decision that there will be no children of ours named David... Especially since I now work at a job where all but one of us are either named David, married to a David, or is the son of another David who also works at the same museum.

I'm just glad my wife's family is from México, so our kids will have an 'Uncle David', and a 'Tío David'. My cousins had to distinguish my dad and my Uncle David as 'Uncle Dave' and 'Uncle David' to keep them straight.

Another reason I’d imagine David isn’t seen as an old person name is became of the youth and strength associated with the biblical David. He’s often depicted as a heroic young shepherd and that cements David as a youthful name is most people’s minds.

That's a Roman Catholic thing. It wasn't so much you had to be given a Saints name, as you had to have a Christian name - so if you were named something like 'Apple' for example, you'd be given a Saints name.

Here's an interesting fact. The name Joshua is actually derived from the name Jesus. In his native tongue of Aramaic, Jesus was called Yeshua. Pronounced yay-shwah. So it's not hard to see how you go from Yeshua to Joshua, especially when you consider that the letter J was often pronounced as a Y instead. I didn't make the connection until I watched Passion of the Christ which is actually not a bad movie, but really fucked up and gorey. Also this is another random thought, but I suddenly want to watch the movie Dogma. I don't think I've seen it since it came out.
