Carnival is a major party, when people can dance, get cathartic and crazy ❤️ but is also massive way of Brazilian people to express our culture and scream demands through the themes of the samba schools and the small parades in the streets, through irony and laughter. It's the best ❤️
This is so cool! You see Carnival and don't think about everything that goes on behind the scenes. We just thought people were dancing too. Just like a giant parade/festival. Didn't even know there was a competition.
There's two types of carnival here. Street carnival which is the most common where people are just partying, using costumes and drinking freely and there's samba school's, which is what you are seeing in this video and only happens in Rio. This airs on TV for people to watch. They prepare for this competition for the entire year, usually all the themes have a social critique behind, the girls you see dancing samba on videos , the school queens workout the entire year like crazy to dance for these competitions.
@@csoniah4432 Just a small correction. This type of competition doesn't just happen in Rio, but all over Brazil. And even out of the country. We export the samba school parade to Argentina, Uruguay and Japan. The difference is that few have the size of Rio de Janeiro. São Paulo is one of the biggest, but it still doesn't come close to the level of Rio's carnival.
@@joaofld I'm from northeast and tbh is not that popular here, people like street carnival more here. Didn't even know samba schools existed outside Rio but thanks for the info.
How fun that you were able to enjoy part of Carnival!!! I was lucky enough to spend 6 months in Rio for my job back in 2005 and was there during Carnival and actually got to "parade" with the schools! We were WAY in the back with the tourists and not part of the judging, but it was still such an amazing experience and one that I will never forget. I am still in touch with the friends that I met during my short time there are Rio is always in my heart. The city is amazing and you can't leave without taking a part of it with you!!!
Hey Chris and Sara! I'm really glad to see you're have enjoyed a lot our Carnival! This was only the technical rehersal in Sambadrome. In the next time, you need to see the official parade with the Cars and the costumes. It's just awesome. I'm a "ritmista" from Acadêmicos do Cubango "Bateria", the samba school that appears on your video and I hope you're have enjoyed our show! Hahahahahaha! :D
The "Stadium" you saw on the sides of the road is actually a Public School for local children. It was especially built on the sides of the Carnaval route. The school converts into a Stadium for watching the parade. The classrooms convert into very luxurious private boxes that are rented at the tune of thousands of dollars. They are equipped with excellent AC, posh furniture, Persian rugs, and catered with the best foods and beverages.
Crazy FUN crazy:) How cool to get this real behind the scenes Carnival experience. A few of my Brazilian animation friends always mentioned that what's normal to them might be considered risqué to Americans, but clearly the fun, energy and dance feels totally normal. Enjoy your remaining weeks. Hope to see you soon with our van "George." Best Wishes and Blessings, James and Kim ❤️
There's two types of carnivals here in Brazil , Parades like the ones shown in the video that happen on sambodromo and are aired on TV and street carnival which is partying in the streets and is the most common one in most states. Each state has their own carnival culture and tradition. Rio is famous for the parades.
No Rio não é só famoso pelos desfiles, há tb carnaval de rua e muito famoso. Tem bloco aqui com mais de 100 anos e já entrou no livro dos recordes. Foi no Rio que começou o carnaval de rua.
Wow! This is unique view! There are SO MANY people involved, and it's just rehearsal! I hope y'all are having a great time in Rio or wherever you are now! :)
Thank you for so much respect for our culture. Yes, Carnaval is very important to us. It's really a competition every year. In the main group (league) we have 12 Samba Schools creating different stories every year. Each one with around 3.000 members. It's an important source of work and income to this people. Fashion and art workers, musicians, designers, writers, researchers m It's a lot of work for two days of presentations. And in the next year they do everything different. I just love my City and the people that live here.
What you both saw was just a rehearsal... the real parade would take place weeks later! By the way, I really enjoyed Chris comments about Brazil ‘s carnival at the end of the video. Well done! You simply nail it!

The official parade is fun. But it gets old for locals so the real fun is in the street parties during carnival. It goes like this: Carnival is officially always on some Tuesday either in February or March. Most people don't have to work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during carnival week (schools and universities also pause during this time). Some employers are good enough to give you the entire week off, most universities do give students the entire week off (students just do it themselves anyways). So the street parties begin the Friday before carnival Tuesday and happen everyday till Sunday after carnival Tuesday. The parties are all over the cities, you can catch one any time of the day or night. Clubs, bars and private spaces will also be throwing parties all the time during these 10 days. It is amazing. When I was younger I'd go party hopping with my friends. You begin a carnival day in one party next thing you know you've been to 15 different places and it is the next day's night and you only go home because you have to sleep so bad. And then there is "Carnival hangover", which is the weekend in the week after carnival. Which is pretty much the same but only for a weekend. Hangover happens only in major cities such as Rio and São Paulo. Unfortunately street carnival was called off this year and last year due to the thing. Some parties happened anyways.
@Uncle Gold School parades are only in Rio. The most common carnival in Brazil is street carnival and the majority of people definitely like this one the most because not everyone can get on a plane and go to rio. These parades are shown on TV for the rest of the country and that's it. Each state has their own tradition, I like bahia and Olinda the most.
@Uncle Gold I don't think the reason they hate samba schools is because they address Afro-Brazilian needs. To be honest, the themes of samba schools here vary. They are not always controverse. I like the parade because it's luxurious. As Joaosinho Trinta used to say: who likes poverty are the intelectuals. The parade is what put Rio Carnival on the map of the world's festivals and it's amazing. Just it. No one is against blacks in Brazil. Brazil is the most mixed country in the world. Let's stop dividing people here into skin colors. We are at least 100 years late for that.
@Uncle Gold I'm from Brasil and I totally agree with you Uncle Gold. The alt right partisans in Brasil hate the carnival party. Real carnaval, in Feb or early March takes place with parties and different types of parades all over the city. The one at Sambódromo is the one by schools of samba, it is a competition among several neighbourhoods and communities, as a sort of popular opera, where each school tells a story with music, dance, floats, fancy dresses.
Que bom que vocês puderam conhecer bem de perto essa nossa festa maravilhosa....nosso Carnaval é a melhor e maior esta do mundo. Bem vindos ao nosso Brasil maravilhoso
You should come to Rio again one week before carnaval. You will see how crazy things can be with the "blocos" on the streets. And try to stay till the carnaval ends to see the samba schools. So much energy and fun.
Fun fact: each one of the major Samba Schools (not sure if it applies to the small ones) has its own "drum beat" related to a different orixa* (Google will explain it better than me).
I am not sure, but I think you saw only the preparation for the official parade. That's because it's free. No problem: everybody says the preparation is better than the official parade, because it's unpretentious, without rules.

hello chris and sarah, i'm from sao paulo, i'm loving watching you guys strolling through brazil, i'm trying to understand your accent where are you from????
I would like to point out the suggestion that the schools are divided into groups. Elite has 12 schools, gold 12, and it goes down. Only elite and gold got to perform on the main runway. The others perform in a not so “glorious” area called intendente Magalhães (about 40 minutes away from sambódromo). Each school has a different theme/song every year, and those songs and themes can’t be repeated. Unless they receive authorization to “revive” the song but the school would have to create different costumes and floats. I’m from Rio, but I live in Florida. I go back home to perform every time I can. Carnaval is my passion, and I can answer some questions if you would like me to do it so.
I know it is exotic for you guys! (Chris and Sara), but carnaval is a social drag to Brazil's development and cultural evolution, a rock tied to its ankles! a total social decay!
The official competition was held last weekend and the winner of the "grupo especial" (the major league) was announced yesterday. This is what they presented (the full parade). Hopefully it isn't blocked due to copyrights, but, if it does, look for "Grande Rio 2022" (Grande Rio is the name of the samba school, they won for the first time in their history): ruclips.net/video/TyjXEzCb4eE/видео.html
Vocês ficarão loucos com os desfiles oficiais. Apenas uma correção: os julgadores não ficam ao final e sim ao longo da pista, em quatro locais mais especificamente.
How about you guys come back next time for the real thing ( we also have the same parade in Sao Paulo ) and then visit the Northeast states and the Amazon area ? It should be amazing
We would LOVE that!! We were hoping to visit the northern states on this trip but Brazil is just so huge we didn't have time. We'll DEFINITELY be back though! We miss Brazil already. :)
I noticed that you guys got scared with Dançarina, half naked at the samba schools rehearsal. But in carnival this is common, both in parades and in carnival street parties. At this time it is summer in Brazil, and in Rio it is normally above 40°. I know that for people from other countries it is a shock to see people half naked, on the streets so naturally. but here it's common Both on the beach, and even on streets with more relaxed clothes on normal days. But that's not why you should lose respect, and treat people like objects. It was a great video, you are always welcome. If you return to Rio, I recommend going to Angra dos Reis, Paraty, Cabo Frio, Búzios and Arraial do Cabo. Of course, in the state of Rio, there are other amazing cities too. But these are postcards of the city, outside the city of Rio.

Carnival IS THE BIGGEST PARTY in the world!!! But the one on the streets... Salvador had an audience of 16 million within the five days of carnival in 2020, Rio over 3 million and Recife/Olinda (neighboring cities) had 2 and 3.6 million respectively. . I think Recife has the greatest diversity, and most complete experience for everyone, although maybe in Rio could better for those who want to watch (the international cliche?) from a bench. There's street carnival in Rio too, as said above, but I fell it's a little more "industrialized" experience. On the flip side salvador and Olinda is where the madness really happens, but I would recommend Olinda before Salvador; not just is a little more participatory, Olinda and Recife are right next to each other... Each one of these are unique tho ;)
African immigration? I think you should say: SLAVERY TRADE, right ? No one was an immigrant, they were all slaves that were brought over to Brazil against they will. They gave to all Brazilians culture, food, dance and religion. I’m Brazilian and I wish you said that on video. Thanks
Our indigenous peoples (aka Amerindians, or "American Indians") used to walk naked in the forest (many still do, at the indigenous reserves), and many Africans that were captured and sent to Brazil as slaves were also indigenous peoples that walked naked or half naked in Africa. This "indigenous nudity" (both from Amerindians and African Indians) was later incorporated by the Samba schools at their Carnaval parades. It's a form of celebration of these indigenous peoples. That's why Brazil at one hand is mostly a Christian nation and has a Penal Code which states that being naked or half naked on any public space is a crime designated as _atentado contra o pudor público_ ("attack against the public decency"), but at the same time Samba and Carnaval are such an important part of our culture that, in the context of Carnaval, nudity is considered an art form and expression of our indigenous legacy, instead of an "attack against public decency".
There is even a common saying here in Brazil that, “the year starts only after Carnival”
Love that!
Yeah, we jokingly say at home "Guys, it's thursday. Happy New Year!" Haha.
And then it last for a couple months...
e era somente o ensaio ...Viva essa terra maravilhosa , orgulho de ser carioca
I know, even just for a rehearsal it was still incredible!

Simplesmente os gringos malucos na Sapucaí
Nice video... but just remembering that Brazil is also in America, in this case, in the south of the continent.

Hello ya'll. ❤
Hey y’all!! Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend. ☺️ it’s always so good to see your comments come through out here.
@@chrisandsara We are doing really good. My beloved husband is going to be 80 tomorrow. I'm trying to talk him into going out for Mexican food.
How much longer will you be in Rio for?
We've already headed to São Paulo!
Show. But this is just the essay. 👏👏👏
The official competition was held last weekend and the winner of the "grupo especial" (the major league) was announced yesterday. This is what they presented (the full parade). Hopefully it isn't blocked due to copyrights, but, if it does, look for "Grande Rio 2022" (Grande Rio is the name of the samba school, they won for the first time in their history):

8:30 esse frame kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Vocês ficarão loucos com os desfiles oficiais.
Apenas uma correção: os julgadores não ficam ao final e sim ao longo da pista, em quatro locais mais especificamente.
Actually, there are judges all across the “road” so we need consistency during all the parade.
7:34 "man yelling in spanish"
Bro.... serious?
Não é em espanhol é português, ele falou: "genial, uma delícia de empada".
You need to see carnaval of Salvador too, talk with me in 2023
I noticed that you guys got scared with Dançarina, half naked at the samba schools rehearsal.
Thanks
That's true!
Vocês não foram no carnaval, esse era apenas um ensaio. Mas já da para curtir a bateria.👍
You two are so cute 🥰
THEY ARRRREEEE!!!!
Aw thank ya!
Sara really does look like Penelope Nova.
Not my thing, but most the Brazilians love it.
You only saw the rehersal
