  • You may have seen videos online interviewing foreigners about being Black in either Japan or South Korea but I barely see videos about being black in Indonesia. In this video, I share my experience as a Black British male who had previously lived in America and travelled extensively across Asia.
    I can tell you for sure being black in Indonesia is way better than being black in America or the UK. This is my honest journey across the island of JAVA, Indonesia. The people of Indonesia are one of the most friendliest I've ever met and its street food are just amazing.

    In Indonesia, racism still exists, sometimes a small form of racism is implied or hidden in a joke when we banter between friends. Our nation is not a perfect nation, but we hope we can continue to uphold our country's slogan "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" which means "unity in diversity" because we have various races, from yellow, brown skin to black skin (Melanesian race) in eastern Indonesia

      Racism is basically an act of discrimination against a race. if you mean to describe the characteristics of a certain race, it is only limited to a joke, it is not an act of racism because there is no element of discrimination there. don't get me wrong in interpreting racism so that new sensitivities emerge.

    • @cozypenguin6630

      Many black people who are not angry are called "black-man" in Indonesia because they understand that it is not a element of discrimination, it's the same when we call white people "bule". in Indonesia, all of these calls do not contain elements of discrimination, they are only limited to calls to describe the characteristics of a race. Don't equate it with the US when calling the N-word, automatically it is an act of discrimination because there is a bad history of discrimination behind the call.

My friends always joke about Indian and Chinese people (stereotypes) and I also joke back about Javanese and Sundanese stereotypes. 8:30 Asia-Afrika Street is named after Konferensi Asia-Afrika (Afro-Asian Conference) in 1955. It sparked the independent movement across Africa. Even one of the country which had the representation in the conference did not even had a flag yet, and the committee created it. Nelson Mandela often mentioned the importance of Afro-Asian Conference for the African countries. Yet, it is way underrated since it is not the western favor. On the contrary, it shows the real face of the West in the history.

    Racism and discrimination stem from disparity and injustice. Even in Indonesia, where there are disparities in areas such as education and healthcare, the habit of showing respect and kindness towards others has helped to unite the diverse population. The moral values held by Indonesians have played a key role in fostering a sense of togetherness. 🥰🥰

    • @hikashia.halfiah3582
      @hikashia.halfiah3582 Год назад +68

      This, racism and discrimination are probably symptoms of deeper problems of the society, usually inequality, disparity, injustices, etc. Indonesia is not exactly free of racism either (especially worse during pre-reformation), but our cultural value and national historical root has make the Indonesia that's fairly tolerant you see nowadays; even with the same inequality, disparity, and injustice problems.
      Doesn't mean we should be lulled to this false sense of security though, eventually if the deeper problems persists, especially social inequality is not handled well, we will be well on express train to ethno-religious-social conflicts, maybe even way worse than the US now.

It's just that in Indonesia,children from a very young age is educated to respect others despite their difference be it skin colour, race , religion , etc . To put it simply It is the nature of Pancasilla the ideology of Indonesia to not be racist .

I think that with the current condition of the US, more and more Black Americans are tempted to also live and to work here as well. Since this country, which actually is as far as from the West Coast to the East Coast, is large... many more things for you to discover and to unravel ahead. My best tip will always be to taste every best local cuisine from each city. You will discover how the tastebud can be so different, even if they are in the same island. Even the soy sauce ketchup has different ingredients. Enjoy!

    hii! im also indonesian and im 12 years old, right now im a 7th grader but oh well :v
    i wanted to keep a friendly reminder racism in indonesia still exist, but not much and it was pretty much used as a joke. i am Balinese and im also a hindu, i moved to bandung when i was a child (i forgot at what specific age tho-) and all my years i've been attending chinese christian schools. in playgroup or elementary i really dont experience any racism, but since the pandemic started im assuming the jokes that includes any racism content in it becomes more and more usual/common. i really dont use racism as a joke tho. but in 7th grade, the school i go to has offline/onsite classes and a ton of my friends got very confused when i came in. they were even more shocked how i can read a bible when im not supposed to know XD. as time goes, they started getting comfortable at using racist jokes at me (but im not the only one tho, so its not that badd). if they hurt my feelings a bit tho they will apologize and promise not to do it again!! so you can really tell them to stop and they will do so.
    oh welp- welcome to indonesian schools LMAOO
    oh and am i the only 12 year old typing out a paragraph here- 🥲

    I visited the Museum Geologi back in the 90's when I was in junior high school. I remember it was dark, gloomy, not much going on. Now flat screens with touch input are everywhere, and the museum looks so much interesting
