In the scene with Leota there are also two rather interesting French sentences which are and can be translated like this
"Des douzes coups de minuit, au matin sonnante, nous valserons ensemble, macabre débutante"
“From the stroke of midnight, to the sound of morning, we will dance together, deadly beginner (it's the bride that she's talk about)”
    And
"Esprits et fantômes, sur vos fiers destrier, escortez dans la nuit la belle fiancée".
“Spirits and ghosts, on your proud steeds, escort the beautiful bride in the night.”

I was lucky enough to visit euro Disney 4 times as a kid. The Phantom Manor was easily one of my favourites. Whilst other parks might have better rollercoasters, I've never found a ghost train or spooky ride that could so much as hold a candle to Phantom Manor. It's so good it essentially ruined all other ghost trains for me. I've tried explaining to a number of people why it's so good, but it's just one of those things you have to experience. As a kid it made it's mark on me for life. I can't wait to take my son back when he's a bit older, eurodisney was always special for me.

Surprisingly being from Melbourne Disneyland Paris for a week was super affordable.

Never been, seen a lot of videos on this but never one that put it together so well. I especially like the inclusion of Marc Davis' thoughts on it, versus Tony Baxter's "Nah, it'll be fine". Davis was right, Walt wouldn't have approved, but if it had been done you'd think he'd have seen how popular it was and would have come around to it.
Given how Phantom Manor broke the mold over the DL/WDW/Japan versions ( and Mystic Manor broke it even further ) I'd hold out a little hope that a future park's haunted attraction may keep the sea captain idea. Ideally that would have fit at DisneySea, but what's done is done.

Years back I traveled all the way to Disneyland Paris and I was so excited to ride this attraction but it was closed because a maintenance worker was electrocuted and killed. The investigation is still ongoing so phantom manner sat with an ominous loom over it knowing that someone was actually killed in there. Unfortunately Thunder Mountain was also closed so I traveled a long way to not get to experience many of the attractions. This was a great video and walk-through and I appreciate the backstory since I was not able to experience it. The huge "debate" when creating the original HM was "What would Walt do?" I DO think Walt would have had more "scary" than funny. Look at some of his films. He gave us a little "wink" of laughter, but people like to be scared. In this version, I think they got it right, even in a dark tone. Very good "back story" One of the reasons this park is on my "bucket list"

For those who don't speak French, yes, the old version could be kind of a bad experience.
BUT, there was one thing that made the 92 version superior. The music !
Think about it : Phantom Manor has been concieved to create an atmosphere, and to tell a Story, to Guests who don't necessarly speak French, or English.
In the new version, the stretch room score doesn't have enough time anymore to get as strong and impressive as it was in the 1st version, since Phantom's bilingual monologue takes much more time.
In the piano scene, the continuity of the score gets broken, to put the new nuptial music.
After Leota's scene, we get though a dark corridor. Here, there used to be a version of the score, with chorus, which made the arrival of the balroom scene much more dramatic...
In the balroom, the music is played with a much lower volume.
All those changes are making the music much less communicative. An attraction is like a movie. It's better to show, than to tell. Phantom Manor 1.0 used to show. The new version is like a Marvel movie, it tells...

@@martinb2251 it's all about preferences in the end. :) I loved both versions but prefer the most recent one and I do agree with you when we arrive to the ride the music before was way more dramatic and that's the only thing I miss from the old one. The progressively decaying Phantom, from the original, was a very cool and grotesque touch. And making Melanie the tragic heroine showing us the way to safety at the end, away from the Phantom's grasp, was so hauntingly tragic. The new version, while still good, doesn't have the same emotional pull. And the new ending is pretty much dud. Still, Disneyland Paris is my favorite and most beautiful Magic Kingdom park.

That's a reference to Big Thunder Mountain. The Phantom (Henry Ravenswood) owned the Big Thunder Mine Company.

@@Mark0612 they really put it in a lot of effort, I wish I’d known the storyline better before riding, it’s so much better than I realised.

The first time I rode was in 2015 and since the pre show was in french I missed a bit of the story and then when I went early Jan 2020 (so pre covid but only by a few weeks!) I was surprised to hear English peppered in and even more surprised to hear the legendary Vincent Price.

Yeah, I don't like the changes they made to the end of the ride where Melanie, instead of pointing the way out so we wont suffer the same fate, now tries to convince us to stay like the rest. And didn't she only have the one groom who vanished before they changed it so her father killed off many suiters? Every time they try to 'improve' on a story they just mess it up.

The final scenes are BAAAAAD! They need to make it a proper boothill instead of the haunted town.

I miss the pre-refurb version. This one absolutely beats you over the head and a number of the design choices they made were just straight up bad.

With all its unique rides and originally brilliant design it's a shame that the french park is now probably the worst Disney Parks around the world. It's just too far behind as if they've given up on it, and even the incoming expansions are just reduced copy-paste from greater projects of the other parks, like the Marvel and weirdly placed Frozen expansion at the Studios park.

Wait was the wedding still held on the same day as the guy died by way of earth quake/Thunderbird...so he died in the earthquake and appeared seconds if not min or hours later to kill the groom because they held the wedding anyway even though her father had just died??? yea i'd be an angry phantom too! lol
