When you got players like Nolan and Noble who never got callups it says a lot for why English football's struggled for so long, really. You need a little bit of that grit. That's what the English game was always about. You wouldn't see Brazil refusing to bring players up to their national team for doing too many stepovers.
Nonsense seeing as England have one trophy to their name with this ‘grit’ And recently they’ve been way more successful getting to finals and semis with younger technical players
@@gavinjwoodward3141 English Football extends beyond the national team. And while you're so eager to step on the trophies the national team has won, Spain have only won a solitary world cup, that doesn't change the fact they have been revered for the past 2 decades for their style of play. English football was never technically poor, it was just more competitively focused coming through grassroots. It was and still is incredibly physical. You take English football at any period in it's history and you can easily find players that were transcendent of the technical side of the game, from Stanley Matthews and Cliff Bastin in the 30's, to Alan Ball, Jimmy Greaves in the 60's, Glenn Hoddle, Steve Coppell, Bryan Robson in the 80's, Gazza, Beckham, Le Tissier in the 90's. These were all players with world class technique and would walk into sides regadless of playing style.

Watching an analysis video a few days back about Fluminense using tactics that go against the grain (preferring to shift the ball into congested areas of the pitch rather than out into space) and how Ganso is central to their style of free flowing football with players not really holding positions and working with 1-2 passes and move, yet he flopped in Europe at Sevilla due to being a square peg that couldn't fit into any of the circle holes in the team's formation (I digress), but yeah, there's plenty of opinions of how the Brazilian national team is overlooking many of its talents or focusing a style of play that dismisses many players not suited to that style.
