Whatever the truth and whatever Iran proffers, the attack is clearly a grave violation of its sovereignty and the supposed security bubble of the Iranian capital. Haniyeh was the regime’s guest, and its role as a regional power is compromised if it’s unable to guarantee the simple safety of visiting allies.
There are reports he was staying in a guest house for veterans, and it is unclear whose technical responsibility it was to protect this facility - and whether the elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) will be explicitly embarrassed, outside of the wider humiliation of an apparent Israeli assassination deep inside of Iran.

I spend a lot of time during my youth trying to understand the world before WW1 and WW2. I found that very difficult, because my world was so much more rational. I grew up with the thread of mutual nuclear destruction and I survived it. I found it incredible hard to understand how leaders of that time could have been so reckless and disregard the foreseeable price that large scale war would certainly cost. And it's documented that they knew about that price. They just didn't care.
I understand this now, because I see the same kind of "politician" not caring. I would never have believed a person like Trump could become president of the USA. Not even after Bush Jr. I would never have believed that Putin would invade Ukraine in that situation.
I totally expected Israel to massacre civilians and even children at scale in response to something like Oct 7. They did that before, if not quite to this extend. It's what Israel does and stands for.
But assassinating an enemy during a diplomatic mission on foreign soil? An enemy that is actively negotiating with Israel?
And Israel is not at all involving the USA? Their partner without whom they would cease to exist (in the long term)? How insulting and self harming is this?
