I'M PERFORMING IN THIS!! I was 13 years old -- in the left corner in front of the boom box, almost hidden -- wearing pink top and purple bottom -- short brown hair. My mom was working for Lorne Michaels on this short lived show called "The New Show" which aired on Friday nights -- taped live in the same studio as SNL -- this was 1983. I got to audition and get the small part dancing on the side -- it was such a fun experience for an 8th grader! I got to know all of these professional dancers and some amazing break dancers. Break dancing was exploding at this time. Yes, Rick James was lip syncing -- and yes, he was such a character. I was so lucky to be a part of this! Candice Bergen was the guest host of the show that night :)
Emily G. Wow what a blessing...I would imagine rick James was hilarious to be around. I first got to know of him when he performed with Teena Marie on BET. That was the very day I realized my generation was truly robbed of good music We sure missed out. Thank God for RUclips and stories like these than can confirm....
I agree with you 150% There's nothing corny here. This is awsome and this wasn't even a single off the Cold Blooded album. Shoot there's still alot of people out there who didn't even know that there was a slammin 12 inch of U Bring The Freak Out. Ion't know why in the hell they waited 20 some years to released the 11 minute 12 inch verson of Big Time. Had they released that back when the Garden Of Love came out that would have sold alot better but it still went gold...
Mr. Rick James ... Never a disappointment ! New York town is a very great dance tune that Mr. James does to perfection !!! Mr. Rick James R. I P. ✓ Carlito F. ♦️ 2021 A. D. 🇺🇸 , U. S. A. Thank You .
It's alittle different than the album version at the 2:03 and 2:10 mark that's not on the album version. They should have made a 12 inch of this track and made it about 8 minues long. This is one slamin' track....
@ruffinjr2003 And there you have it people the great Levi Ruffin Jr himself said that. Yo Levi as always you were jammin. Oh and I have an ear for music with that said this version isn't on the album. I picked up that part at the 2:03 mark. Funky as hell but damn sure ain't on the album so whats the deal with this version. Oh and this is one of my favorites off the Cold Blooded album. I have to say the back ground vocals set this song off...
Excuse me but how is this corny? Honestly I would put this jam and You bring the Freak out 12 inch version before I would Cld Blooded but hey that's just me...
This is Rick selling out to stay current. THose hacks you mentioned never had any real substance and have been derivative from the begging - like most young perfprmers today. Rick was indeed a icon; an original - which is why this is corny. It was corny whe it happened. I saw this live when it happened and I lived through the 80s. If you read your analogy before posting it, my post isnt the dumbest thing you have seen in a long time.
This is corny with the breakdancers hanging around for decoration. I makes it look like Rick was trying to make sure he appealed to the kids. Looks like Rick James visits the kids from Fame! LOL

You lying sack of shit, all those back ground dancers were cardboard cutouts. Rick was the only live person on stage! Your not even real
how cool is that!

I think this is the best Rick James song. Sad he fucked himself up so badly.
So you wanna be a rock star.

I love your so much Rick... But why the fake guitar playing...
All those fake MTV extras breaking all over the stage is corny. Rick's music is not.
this is obviously lip-syn
I doubt this was life ... sounds to much like the original to me, no?
The guy on the remote keyboard ( Levi Ruffin ) told me they lip sync it....
