- One of the saddest endings ever to a film. Part of the final scene and end credits from "A Summer Story". Music by Georges Delerue. A wonderful film and soundtrack well worth having in your collection.
NOTE: I HAVE NO IDEA HOW RUclips HAS ADDED A SILENT SECOND VERSION OF MY VIDEO AFTER THE END OF MY ORIGINAL. THE ORIGINAL IS ONLY 3.52. SORRY ABOUT THAT.
When she searches for her lover in the town and he sees her looking and hides she almost catches a glimpse of him but at that moment is suddenly blinded by a flash of bright sunlight reflecting off a mirror (representing his vanity I see suppose) being carried by movers to a truck. His arrogant vanity denied him a joyful life with his true love leaving him instead with a loveless marriage to a barren woman. When he sees the ruddy young man standing by the road whom the farm girl died giving birth to and the music swells with his astonishment, viewers sense the importance the seemingly small decisions one makes in life and the crucial ramifications they can have. One of the most powerful and well directed scenes ever filmed. For those with eyes that really see, this masterpiece scene will resonate forever.
@gwestfall very well stated. succinct, intelligent, and absolutely correct. this movie has HAUNTED me ever since I saw it back in the late 1980s. Rest In Peace Neen!
I saw this movie 12 years before and it stay in my mind forever.
This was one of the finest romantic films EVER made.
Absolutely. A terribly underrated masterpiece. Great acting by the entire cast, particularly by Imogen Stubbs. Gorgeous cinematography of what may be the most beautiful countryside in England. A true gem.
This movie was so popular in Albania in early 90'. I am 28 and can't hold my tears falling down... Greetings from Albania.

Early 90’s rather. Filmi eshte ne 87
A man gives up the woman he truly loves for a bloodless, childless, but, for the era, socially acceptable marriage. And at the end, having just been brought face to face with the extent of his betrayal, he's given a glimpse of the son he didn't realize he had and now will never know. Everyone sits through the credits, too stunned to move.
I was crying for a hour after this movie. Would love to see it again ...
Was just a kid age 10 - 12.
Watched it in the late 80's /early 90's.
Still can't get over this classic movie.
Everytime I watch this wonderful movie,it touches my heart so deep the way it did when I first watched it 20 years ago. It's a fantastic love story, but with a very sad ending. Finally after 20 years I got this movie on dvd.Fantastic movie....
Cry like a baby.... I never see something so beautiful ....In all of it's glory LOVE !!!
Fantastic film, brilliant music. But so rarely shown on TV...
I can't even listen to this without bursting into tears. If I watch the clip as well, I'm done for. Perfect marriage of music to content. Is there a clip of her searching for him in town? That's heart-breaking. Great movie.
And I thought I was the only one with that reaction.
I bawled my eyes out and cornered the market on tissues
one of the rare movies which made me cry, thanks for posting it
This is A MASTERPIECE FILM🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 I have no doubts for british, they make THE FILMS!!!!!
This film is one of the most heart touching love story. I was so happy when I found this movie on DVD last year in Japan. The DVD is still available on amazon.co.jp but it is region 2 only.
Ik heb deze film op VHS, en na 20 jaar heb ik er weer gezien op mij oude video, prachtig muziek, het verschurend verhaal.
yes, I love this movie. Thank you.
"Where was she now, the girl that I'd wronged so cruelly?"
He's grown a beard. But Jim recognizes him immediately, and knows why he's come back. He has to know.
At least He knows what a huge Jerk He is.
You british. HANDS DOWN
you make the best films WORLDWIDE. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I remember this film and this ending in particular very well. It is so poignant. Thanks for posting this version...in the USA this film was released with a VERY JARRINGLY odd choice of "I know you're out there somewhere" popular song dubbed over Delerue's beautiful credit music. Our local film reviewer cautioned us to RUN OUT OF THE THEATRE as the end credits rolled because it spoiled the ending.
I remember the ending song very well by The Moody Blues. It's one of my favorites and whenever I hear it I think about this movie.
@@Rose-Rae Glad you found a good memory.
The version I saw in the US theater had Delerue’s music in the end credits. By the time the end credits rolled my glasses were so fogged up I couldn’t read them. I’m glad there were only three of us in the theater and nobody saw me cry.
@@edgy8481 Glad to hear it...the version I saw was screened in Iowa...which perhaps speaks for itself.
Sticking the Moody Blues "Out there Somewhere", over-riding Delerue's awesome theme music was a blunder.
I usually don't like romance or "chick flicks" as i guess it's called but this movie will forever haunt me. I was around 22 and laid up in bed with the flu when i first saw this movie. There was nothing else on so i kept watching this. When i first saw Megan my heart just melted. And when that coward chose that stuck up shrew over the sweet beautiful Megan i wanted to give him an a$$ whipping of all a$$ whippings. But for him to find out what fate happened to poor Megan then he gets to see the son he'll never get to know was just what he deserved. And it wasn't so much complication during giving birth that killed Megan, it was a broken heart.
this film is based on "The Apple Tree" by John Galsworthy. I read the story sometime in the 1980s but I couldn't quite picture some of the scenery. Nice to know they made a film, it makes the landscape clearer to imagine. Very sad story
In the Book they didnt have a child together. Megan drowned herself in the pond under an Apple Tree, i remember. The Story in the book is much different as the Movie but i sobbed at both 💔
I've wondered who played Francis at the end of the movie. He's only in it for seconds but how much he resembles them both. The actor is not mentioned in the credits at all. Odd.
Even 15 years after I watched this movie, I still got chills at 1:22
I hate that coward though :))
Thank you for posting. I love the music of Georges Delerue.
The best love story movie ever.
"We promise according to our hopes and perform according to our fears". - Francois de La Rochefoucauld (15 September 1613 - 17 March 1680)
O cried too much in this scene, when he saw his son.
yeah....i was young when i saw this movie....omg...i suddenly fall in love with ''Megan'' and Asthon piss me off because no guts to do it....he finish with a stuck up woman without child.....poor guy.......and Megan (Imogen...WOW :) ) she died......i cried like a baby lol!!!!! seriously......awesome movie whole lotta love!!!!!!!!
I needed a life supply of tissues and a big bucket.
this scene broke my heart T-T
My father would get so emotional by this ending! He no longer lives and I get double emotional today!
Love has no age, no limit; and no death (John Galsworthy author of A Summer Story)
Very deep feeling felt in love...when everything has losed
@ralado46 Spectacular film. Great cast. Great score. Imogen Stubbs is the prettiest woman I have ever seen and the ending is so poingant! I an guy and it is the "chick flick" to end them all. It was on You Tube but has been taken down. Rats!!! Why didn't down load it!
YT added on to his video without his permission or knowledge and they still want us to pay them for this travesty.
These scene should be longer about 2-3 minutes. Why is is so short ? The only equally touchy scene I know is in City lights by Charlie Chaplin. Unfortunately this movie and its ending is only known to very narrow movie fans. In Poland it wasn't even released on DVD !

Omg nooooo Soooo sad
You can buy this wonderful film on i tunes !!!!!
@frubtok7 - short, sad, and sweet ending - like poor Megan's life.

Querido esse filme passou na globo duas vezes eu lembro que na primeira vez passou no intercine em 1998. Queria muito esse filme dubldo mas nunca encontrei. Se puderem ajudar serei grata
you can get it at amazon.co.uk but hurry as only 4 left in stock :)
@markoe36m It was on You tube for a while but is gone. It is almost impossible to find. BUT I am getting a DVD from Japan as far as I know NEXT WEEK . We searched world wide to find it. You can get used VHS tapes if you dilligently search the Kijiji type sites. Tthey are dodgy as you have no idea what condition they are in. I m very surprised this has never been re released. It is a spectacular film with a great soundtrack, epic cast and it is the "chick flick" to end all chick flicks.
@sgtcrab1 not anymore. they removed it...
@markoe36m It is up on You Tube again! A summer story scene 1/7
John Galsworthy The apple tree
