Congrats my man! 2023 was the year I finally got all the original B&W Grendel (1982-84) comics in 9.8 white pages. It’s officially the best set in the world according to CGC. This is my grail that took me over 20 years to put together. 🙂

I still need to get a Special Edition #1. I loved the Tick back in the day too and have plenty of the regular black cover #1s, but have yet to find the SE.

Look. My grail is 181. This year I added it to my PC and it is such a good feeling to finally make what was once unthinkable a reality. Not only did you add your grail, you accomplished a goal you set for yourself. That's a big thing when challenging yourself. What an awesome book, one of 3000 copies in your possession, congratulations!!
Great point! Not only do we get awesome books when we go after our grails, but we get to challenge ourselves and gain confidence in our abilities. I know it’s just comics but there are real life repercussions to this silly hobby. Congrats on the 181!
Congrats on picking up a 181! At the time I bought my first copy it was the most I’d ever paid for a comic. That was back in 2008. Needless to say, that it no longer holds that honor.

Congrats on the grail! We are TMNT #1 buddies now. I've got a 9.4 first print that I bought in 1986 for 130 dollars. Everyone thought I was crazy for spending that much on a comic book.

I don’t think my ROI will ever match yours, but there is a 0.0000000001% chance that I get hurt on this book when it finds a new home many years from now. It has taken me years to chip away at a first print. I’d pretty well give. Up on it and accepted that a 3rd would be the top for me. Then a 2nd fell into my lap. And then ultimately this happened. It’s pretty awesome, but I kinda feel like the dog that catches the car or like the Joker would if he accidentally killed Batman. Some serious what do I do now vibes.
Welcome to the hobby though! There is a great community here on YT and on IG, which is a big part of what makes it fun.

Definitely pretty cool. I'll never forget watching the first episode of the cartoon or picking up the cartoon series comics. Tmnt made an impact on many.
I wish I had that level of recall. I was just a shade young for that though. I had just turned five when the cartoon hit, but I was all in.

Congrats on the crazy pickup! Great story to go along with it. Grails as an idea are tricky and come in different levels I think. I picked up a personal grail a few weeks ago, Swamp Thing #37. To me its amazing- to others it isn't a big deal. I guess that is why this hobby is so great though! Collect and go after what YOU want 😅

I’ve learned that a good deal always shows up if you’re patient. I just landed an FF 49 for less than half the price sellers were asking for a year and a half ago. Got mine for a mere $550.

I lived just a few miles from Easthampton, Ma when these books started coming out. Eastman and Laird were doing a card and comic show at the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside and I had the chance to pick up the first few issues. However I was a teen who was with his mother and she was in a huge hurry. Long story short..... I never got the book and it has haunted me to this day. Congrats on your grail pick-up !!!

For what it’s worth I think you did the right thing. I love to have a first appearance of the Turtles, is it going to happen? No.
You never know what might happen, but the deck is definitely not stacked in our favor in terms of getting it at a crazy good price.

As a teen of the ‘80’s and deep into my comic book collecting phase, I missed out on TMNT. I shopped at my LCS and my favorite newsstand every week and bought just about every first issue of every Marvel, DC, and independent throughout the 80’s (my favorite indy back then was The American). However, TMNT fell below my radar. You shouldn’t feel the post purchase dissonance that comes with such an expensive buy. Life is too short. Buy what you love.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved selling at those 2021 prices, but man did buying suck then. The worst part is that prices are way down but buying costs are resistant to the drop. Collection sellers want those 2020/2021 prices for their books still today too.

Seen a raw copy with a price tag of 18,000 the other day. It probably would grade 8.0 or less. I was just grateful to hold it for a minute and explain to my kid that this is where it all began

I picked up a "starter" TMNT #1 recently. A 6th print for $100, from a woman who sold it because her husband was out of town. I felt bad for him, but Shredder would have been e proud. Lol. I'll get earlier printings with time.

Congrats man, this is a big book for me as well!! I'm an 80's kid so cartoon them song, and the 2 movies 3 doesn't count, are huge portion of my childhood. Like you, one day it shall be mine!!!

As good as this pick up was, the fact that you were able to do it with copies of books that you had multiples of makes it a no-brainer. Enjoy and remember that whatever the financial value is, the enjoyment value is worth more.

Congrats! I envy you your enthusiasm and I really wish I could replicate it. But at 59 (you're still 20 years away -- don't worry) and with some money to spend, I can't imagine what comic would get me so excited. I fear I have already reached the stage of "it's just stuff." Sad, I know. But it's impossible to manufacture collecting enthusiasm -- you either have it or you don't!

I keep trying to recover that feeling I had as a 12 year old in the 70s, when I frequented a LCS called The Haunted Bookshop in a small town just outside Vancouver. Obviously, that's not possible. So I need to settle for an approximation! What might that be, in comic terms? I'm still thinking about it. I think that research could be just the ticket. Do you happen to know of any good books that discuss comic collecting, especially from a personal angle. There are many such books about rare book collecting, so perhaps there are some entertaining personal memoirs about comic collecting. There should be, as people really have great stories to tell.
I can tell you one person who would completely agree with your decision, hyper combo comics.

The books you gave up are easily replaceable. I am happy I don't love Mutant Turtle enough to want it at any grade. I guess that could be a blessing. Except geting AMS 15 at 3.0 which I guess is your TNMNT hunt. Congrats on your purchase. Really awesome!!!

That is an amazing book and TMNT#1 is my main grail book to get and then I just gotta get Primer#2, X-Men#1 and Batman#1 1940 and my comic collection is complete. I do have to ask where did you get that TMNT t-shirt?

👍🏻 Tales has always been my favorite. I was lucky enough to complete Crypt of Terror 17-19 early on, so I don’t have to worry about those anymore. Just the Crime Patrols.

Awesome story Drew, what an amazing book! I think the story behind obtaining this kind of stuff is so important for the hobby. I’m hoping to get my personal grail at some point in my life (AF15 as well!) Fingers crossed that it will be in a garage sale for $5 instead of me parting with a lot PC for a trade 😂

It's so weird that we go through stuff like this now to obtain things we had when we were *kids* -- there was no way for us to know back in 1984 or 1985 that we had something that would be worth more than some people make in a year by 2023 😂 what a story!
It’s like our adulthood has been a kick in the pants and all we want is some of that sweet nostalgia from the greatest and best childhoods ever. I’m at a show in OK right now and here’s all I’ve bought: a Fugitoid figure from the 88 toy line, a Snarf figure from the 80s Thundercats line and the last issue of the Spider-Man Adventures series that was based on the animated Spider-Man show. 🤷🏻♂️
And I’ve loved every minute of it.

It was pressed/cleaned. Has some finger bends in it though, I’m guessing those happened while at CGC 🤦🏻♂️
If you have the ones you traded in higher grades sure why not. Turtles 🐢 books are not even remotely my thing but happy you got your grail. Overall it's a great time for buyers to pick off grails. I finally got my FF 48 because of the current market. I actually take new grails to bed at night and keep them in my nightstand the first week or so lol. And oh wow Batman 121 is highhhhh on my want list.

I think it was a great trade/purchase for you. A 9.8 TOD is great book but how many people are in the market for a M/NM copy of a generic character who has been around in various portrayals since 1897. The 9.8 TOD will see huge swings in value. The word grail gets thrown around a lot but I would agree that a high grade copy of TMNT 1st print is a grail. Only 295 copies graded by CGC 9.2 or better. Only 997 copies graded by CGC in total. There's 13,713 graded copies of IH#181, 4,355 TOD#10 and 11,751 GSX-Men#1. There's eighty one 9.8 TOD#1's so its pretty common. Compare that (TOD#1) to Hero for Hire #1 (came out same time) where there's only twelve 9.8 graded copies. Turtles transcend comics. Vlad Dracula not so much.
100%! When I first had the TOD1 graded there were approximately 42-43 9.8s, if I remember correctly. So the population has nearly doubled in about 8 years.
