Wait. They still put hand breaks in cars? I thought they got rid of those or put them as buttons in such an awkward spot. That you cannot even be bothered to use it.
Fun fact: according to the most reputed antivirus testing site avtest, windows defender is realistically all you'll ever need. I tend to agree as I've never had a 3rd party antivirus/antimalware software since 2007 and I've never had my PC infected. I do live more dangerously than most others (if you know what i mean) but still defender seems to work just fine.
Yep, once Windows 10 came out Windows Defender became fine for people, especially the general public. I work retail and the first thing I tell customers when they come in to purchase antivirus is to uninstall their current antivirus and Windows Defender will protect them for free. I am shocked by how many people don’t even know Windows has free AntiVirus as they have always purchased computers from stores with preinstalled Norton or McAfee and always assumed they had to keep renewing it. I am sure most people disregard what I have to say since I am a retail worker but whatever, at least someone will listen and if not they can still buy their AV software in store (for now, until everything ends up all digital) I personally use Windows Defender, and for files I really don’t know anything about I will run them thorough virustotal for some additional AV perspectives on a file.
I used to rely on Avast, but the software became too naggy. Constantly giving popups for special offers etc. Switched to defender, and haven't looked back, it's great, and less performance hit than Avast too.
It really depends a lot. Defender/security is usually plenty for most people, but I have had atempts that were more sophisticated on my computer and defender does nothing against that. I used to have a subscription for Bitdefender, but due to various reasons I really couldn't use that any more as it both wasn't secure enough and didn't allow me the range of controll that I wanted. These days I use Emsisoft, and have mostly great experiences with that. I do understand that not everyone else gets affected by attacks as frequently as I do however (I do get exposed partly due to my interests, partly due to my job and partly just becasue of my stupid curiosity).
For casual users Defender is the best. In Kali Linux you can actually test your virus on multiple antiviruses. Defender was the last one standing in 25+ tests.
I don't know if AV-test are the most reputable. I vaguely remember a controversy in which they were accused of using a test to make a certain AV product look more favourable. I'm having trouble looking it up, so take this as you will. In any case: there is also AV-comparatives you can check out. Their summary reports also include a product review of the tested software.

6:03 I would like to point out to you that McAfee has been a cloud based antivirus for awhile now, and it stores it's key signatures in servers. It's not just antimalware like Malwarebytes that does that, Bitdefender, McAfee and Kaspersky also do that too.
Leave it to Linus to ask questions I've never thought of but should, and then answer them. I feel like I learned something today. And that's a good thing.
Also a drive with more than just the required software to test. My family insists on using norton or mcafee(and i let them because they click shit they shouldn’t.). But when they get a new pc and the antivirus gets installed its fine. About 3-6 months later after they have installed a bunch of shit and filled a decent portion of the drive, shit is slowed down massively, and thats after i kill off all the shit that start on boot and restart. Thats where this test fails.
Back in the late Aughts, I actually worked FOR Symantec AND Webroot collecting application benchmarks to assess performance impact by antivirus suites. The worst performances were ALWAYS in file transfers. Without spilling too much tea, essentially the way anti-malware suites work are by hashing every single file on the system into a log, uploading the log to their cloud server (or against their own local definition base) and then just saying "these are known hashes, are any of them on the system?" Then, it just monitors the system for CHANGES to files and updates the SHA in the table after comparing it to the SHA database. So, if you do big file transfers or do something that is constantly updating a single file (like Zipping something), it'll be constantly hitting that hashing algo and doing SHA compares, which is what tanks the access time performance.
My work laptop uses Sophos and it's awful as the hard drive is pinned at 100% usage all of the time At home I just stay with Windows Defender as it's better than nothing and I do the odd scan with Malwarebytes now and again

Windows Defender isn't just better than nothing, it's as good as any of them and better than most. Unless you're running IT for a company and want some of the management features without setting up Windows System Center, there's zero reason to use anything else.

I am sure most people disregard what I have to say since I am a retail worker but whatever, at least someone will listen and if not they can still buy their AV software in store (for now, until everything ends up all digital)
I personally use Windows Defender, and for files I really don’t know anything about I will run them thorough virustotal for some additional AV perspectives on a file.

What antivirus do you recommend then?

I haven't installed anti-virus in 15+ years. Thinking back to when I did use an AV product, it never seemed to do anything other than get in the way.
Welp, here's another guy comparing 15 years ago to the present and think it's still the same. You grew up, but never the wiser.
@@bradhaines3142 Well I need an av because of erm.. piracy
living dangerously man...maybe u don't browse the dark web often
Do you turn off Windows Defender? Because it's installed and running by default on Windows 10 and it's actually a decent antivirus solution. (This is assuming you use Windows of course.)
Great video. Can you do the same sort of testing with popular gaming software? Along the same lines as anti-virus, it's still a common recommendation for people to disable things like the Xbox Overlay, GeForce Experience overlay, discord/steam overlay, etc to maximize performance.
Linus: grosses about McAfee and Norton.
People who used Avast: Pathetic.
I once looked up the runtimes without a virus scanner from the video:
- Windows 10 startup: up to 4.24 seconds longer (without: 25.17 seconds)
- Installation of apps using the example of VLC Media Player: up to 5.08 seconds longer (without: 5.97 seconds)
- Launch of Steam: up to 6.14 seconds longer (without: 16.58 seconds)
- Adobe Photoshop launch: up to 1.28 seconds longer (without: 16.32 seconds)
- Adobe Premier Pro launch: up to 2.28 seconds longer (excluding: 7.89 seconds)
- Unzip file: up to 1.44 seconds longer (without: 4.15 seconds)
- Data transfer 1GB SSD to server: 4.13 seconds longer (without: 32.5 seconds)
- Data transfer from 1GB server to SSD: 12.68 seconds longer (without: 42.31 seconds)
ESET is our hero back when we had low/mid range pc performance, still is our hero till this very day.
Yeah nod32 was pretty good back in the days.. very lightweight compared to the competition with high rates of catching new infections
4:29 is probably the greatest thing to ever happened in a LTT video.
10/10 reference!
Yeah I uninstalled Norton after it deleted all my cracks and patches
True. Only windows security/defender is chill with some patches and cracked software
same still kinda pissed
There's an exception list for a reason, but I guess ya just didn't dig that deep.
@@carlsanderson Having to go through that EVERY SINGLE TIME makes you go insane though
Naw, you just set up all your difficult programs in a single folder, then simply exclude the folder. Works much better than excluding a false positive signature because that way nothing is slipping under the radar on other parts of the system. If we were nearby and this COVID-19 rubbish weren't ongoing I'd gladly drop by and help ya out.
The intro is slightly out of sync. Drives me mad :‘D
"Growing longer than a CVS reciept " - Linus 2020
You know your screwed when your Antivirus program is identified as a potential threat
:) Actually, that really happened to me around a decade ago when Avira system security was launched and for promoting it the developers gave a free two-years license for the first users. You couldn't do any settings in its firewall and (I was back then so novice) it was blocking me to install Steam. After two-three months that thing happened, it was blocking itself saying that it's malware! Even finally uninstalling it was a pain in the ass and my first really functioning security suite was Bitdefender total security 2009.
So, avoid Kaspersky, 360 Total Security and Baidu.....that way the Russians and Chinese don't get your info.
"We are the virus."
This was too deep for me, right now.
My brain was in LTT mode, not philosophy mode. Send help.
It gave me a chuckle. I see what you did there Linus/Team
So what antivirus is recommended?
None, Just use your brain.
