  • Here's my BMW SX1000XR Review, done partly on the new Drift Ghost 4K. Check out my thoughts on both in this vid.
    After the sad demise of Herman at the hands of a SMIDSY, I got my hands on a BMW S1000XR Sport SE to review as a potential replacement. It's a very capable bike with around 160 bhp and certainly no lack of power or speed, but sadly it just left me feeling a little empty to be honest. I missed the character of the big twins and triple engines.
    Apologies for the poor audio for the first few minutes of the vid, that’s another symptom of the Ghost 4K I’m afraid, it’s Audio is very poor. All I did was unplug the Ghost-S I always use, plug the mic into the Ghost4K, Mount the camera in the same place as I mount the Ghost-S, and this was the result!
    ‘Thankfully’ the remote and Ghost 4K froze on me so I had to change back to the Ghost-S, and normal excellent service was resumed.
    Check out the vid to see for yourself.

    Just echoing all the previous comments - great to hear and see you back on two wheels! I’ve been where you are after a bad rta and was pretty broken up. I’m a GS TE rider but the first bike I rode after the smash was a HD Road Glide ultra! Got on a GS after and pleased to say it’s tucked up and snoozing in the garage right now. The confidence does return and greatly helped by considerate ride outs with life long biker mates. All will be well Bruce.

    Great review Bruce, Know what you mean about being nervous about other road users, been through the same thing myself and to be honest six years later I still feel the same. Keep up the good work. Lovin it.

      Thanks Andy, it’s always a deceptive time of year this. The days brighten up, we get some slightly drier and warmer weather to make us think that sting is coming. Then wallop - snow and ice for February!!!
      Fingers crossed we’ve seen an end to the winter already 👍

    I´m so glad to see you back on a bike buddy... and what awesome bike you choose to come back! Brutalll... love the BMW S1000XR!
    Really happy that you are already searching the new beast to hit the roads again.
    Happy new year my friend! Looking forward for the new adventures.

      That would be a pleasure and an honor my friend!!
      Here is all about flat and straight boring roads, but in 30 minutes we can reach the beautiful curvy roads of SPA or Ardenes region in Belgium..
      In May I might be ridding 1 week to UK, but with a group of the Expat Bikers.. You never know if you can show us some nice roads as well around there heheheheh
      Man, you just made my day... so glad to watch you riding and making plans, Hell yeah!
      See you soon TPOne

    Great to see you on two wheels again - I'm sure OH will be delighted ;-) I reckon you hit the nail on the head when you said you need to regain trust in the bike and tyres. Being tense is a self-fulfilling prophecy. I can't imagine IAM teaching you anything you don't already know. It'll soon come back to you.

      All good thanks bud, the issue now is just actually getting to dealerships to test ride bikes as I don’t have any transport now. If the wife is working then I’ve got no car, so unless I can get there my train or taxi, I’m a bit screwed!

    Great vid Bruce, Do your advanced mate with your local IAM group, I signed up & passed with a first in 2013. I was a bit sceptical, pipe n slippers, hi viz n all that. Believe me it will improve your confidence no end & no matter how well you think you can ride, you will definitely learn things. As I said to my observer after passing, yes’s I could already ride & handle a bike, I’ve been riding since 8 yrs old but he taught me road craft. Never looked back & now got a whole new group of riding mates. Those cars on junctions, if your not sure if they’ve seen you, give em a quick toot it could save yer bacon. Cheers buddy... ride safe Karl 👍

    Hi Bruce great to see you back on board buddy. Once you've GS'd you must go back :) I went through the exact same confidence issued when I got t'boned in a smidsy, took a good few rides to get back, and I'm still very over cautious when I see cars at Junctions

    Great to see you back on a bike Bruce; I did IAM three years ago and found it brilliant for upping my observation and positioning skills. I’ve always liked the look of the X-RAY; however, it’s chain driven and as you said on camera, the power and speed that the GS/GSA generates is more than sufficient. Looking forward to the next review🏍😀👍

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  6 лет назад

      Cheers Andy,
      Aye IAM is based on Roadcraft, which I’m trained in already for the police driving, but I’ve not done the police bike course as yet.

    Welcome back to the saddle. Good to see. Just a thought but..
    Is thinking ' will they pull out or not?' A bad thing?
    I was always told to treat them all like muppets and you won't go far wrong. Slows me down but I like life and have plenty more of the world is want to see yet..
    Love the honesty in the review (camera).
    Safe riding.

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  6 лет назад

      Cheers Richard, yep precisely, caution is a good thing here for sure. However I don’t think the camera portrays it right as I’m usual fairly cautious of traffic at options, but it is overly so at the moment.
      I’m a fully trained police driver so always use the system in my riding anyway, but the apprehension at present is adversely effecting the ride for now. It’ll go with some more miles in the bike I’m sure.

    Hey big man good to see you back out again but don't be so hard on yourself it's going to take some time. I took out an XR on Monday as my GSA was in for service but its not for me. Loved the gearbox and exhaust note but too tall for short arse like me plus I felt I sat on it very high whereas I seem to sit in the GS.
    Anyway keep looking and I'm waiting for your review of the Triumph 1200.

    Did you use the dynamic mode or dynamic pro by chance? I've got a '16 XR and it's screamin' sport bike performance. I've done a bunch of videos on the XR. One thing about this bike that took a bit of getting used to. It loves 6000 to 10,000 RPM.

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  6 лет назад

      Always ride in Dynamic Pro if available, Dynamic if not.
      Yeah it rides just like a Sportsbike in-line four, nothing until you hit the higher reaches of the rev’s. I used to love that, but then discovered the raw low down grunt of twins, V-twins, V4’s etc, there’s no going back after that!

  • @takenbistorm1

    Great to see you on a bike again , I can’t help but think about your replacement, it’s got to be another GS , that bike was made for you , it suits you so well , as for your mindset when riding , feeling paranoid about cars pulling out on you from side roads etc , well I think that’s the only way to stay alive , expect every vehicle to pull out on you , my instructor drummed into me to think that every car driver on the road was paid to knock me off my bike so that’s the way I think now , anyway it’s brilliant seeing you on 2 wheels again mate

    Good to see you back out on the road again Bruce, I know what it's like to get back on the road after an accident, the confidence does come back after a while. I am going to be in a different type of confidence builder after having had so long out of the saddle due to the 2 knee replacements I don't want to come off/get knocked off and damage the knee implants. They reckon the new Tiger 1200 is different beast at 11KG lighter on the top of the range XRT and XCA models and they say the shift assist is superb. But at £16,150 for the XRT and £16,950 for the XCA before added extras is a bit toooooo steep. I priced up an XRT with aluminium expedition luggage and engine protection bars and it came to just a few quid short of £18,000 (ouch). Still won't stop me taking one out for a test run though. Not priced a GS up yet, but I expect it won't be far off the same price once fully loaded up to the same spec. On another note regarding the camera, I have just managed to get hold of a brand new GHOST S. So I'll give the 4K a miss, well until they get all the issues sorted. Dave

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  6 лет назад

      Hi Dave,
      Aye the new Triumph does look good, but it’s still top heavy apparently, especially compared to the GS. I’ll take one for a spin though and see for myself.
      Aye the price of bikes these days is just ridiculous isn’t it. A fully specked Gs with luggage isn’t far off £20K now, insanity!
      👍

    What a great steed for getting back into it on! A 160bhp rocket-horse!! :D Refreshing in the current biker climate to hear someone say 'They were wrong, but so was I'. I had a similar situation recently. We have to take some responsibility for putting ourselves in harms way. Shame about the Drift. I had high hopes for this 4k.

    Were the accidents on your regular commute? If so, complacency can be a massive factor. By far the closest bum-clinching near misses I've had were on my commute and being on 'auto pilot'. So easily done.

      The perfect storm. I wouldn't beat yourself up about it. Sounds like you've just been really unlucky. I've had a couple of instances in the last 12 months were if I was 5 seconds further down the road I'd have found grief! No harm in a bit if IAM though. I've heard good things, and apparently it drops your insurance down a few quid.

    Great video... I have the Drift 4K too, it's rubbish ! I have had all the issues you have mentioned here, freezing, audio problems and the remote is useless. Also I was stupid enough to buy the extra big battery and waterproof case. You can't use the big battery module with the waterproof case. How come the Ghost-S is waterproof without the a separate case and the 4K is not...
    I thankfully also have the Ghost-S which is a great camera and would whole heatedly recommend it to anyone. As for the VERY Expensive 4K - BIN IT ! Cheers

    Great to see your back on two wheels Bruce.. every accident you have will make you more and more wary but as time goes on you will settle back in to it, it’s good to be more cautious. I’ve had quite a few accidents in my thirty years of riding, hasn’t slowed me down but I’m far more aware of what other drivers are doing around me.
    As for that Beemer you were testing.. it was proper ugly and far too powerful, I mean what is the point of 160bhp on a bike like that... perhaps I’m to old and cynical.? I’ll stick with my twenty year old Fireblade, heaps of fun, really reliable and very cheap to run.

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  5 лет назад

      Andy DON’T touch the Ghost 4K mate, there are FAR better cameras on the market. The only good things about it are the battery life, which is fantastic, and the actual form/size/shape of the camera. Everything else is sub-par. The image quality is nowhere near that of GoPro or the Sony cams, the audio setup is ridiculous (same as most action cameras at the moment to be fair) and the remote is just plain useless unless you’re wearing it on a naked wrist with no gloves and you never, ever switch the camera off.
      I’ve moved to GoPro’s now. I looked at the Sony XD3000 and it’s fantastic, but it’s an old camera now so I went with the new Hero 7 as the stabilisation is absolutely superb. 👍

      Hello Chris,
      Thanks for subscribing mate, glad you’re enjoying the channel and vids. That’s a shame you’re not getting on with the XR, but I completely understand where you’re coming from.
      The Rallye’s a great machine, and if you’re able to put a new exhaust on it, that engine sounds amazing once it’s unleashed. I had a Triple Black GS with full akro system, air filter and had the ecu ‘improved’ - what an absolute weapon it was!!!
      Do you know any of the BikeMe lot down there in Oz? They really looked after me when I was there in my trip.
      Anyway, thanks again for getting in touch, stay safe and keep enjoying the road 👍.

      teapotone I don't know the BikeMe gents mate but I do now :)..Switching thru your vids here is giving me loads of proper info on cross-border travelling. Found HorizonsUnlimited that you mentioned in a comment. Also Toro Adventures in Morooco. Invaluable info mate and certainly on my radar now. Lifes commitments won't give me 6 months off to do a RTW but 10 days in Morooco is now on the radar thx to your VLogs.
      The Triple Black is a sublime machine and with those mods you mentioned, it just wets my appetite for the GS so much more. I've come over to Beemers from Ducati at the ripe ol age of 46. I miss the character of a Duke but my body is enjoying the rest albeit.
      Enjoying the vids and will watch all of them while the kids n wife are out (I'll send her back out for milk n sugar if need be!)

      I was so disappointed in the Drift 4K Ed. After my feedback in the previous review vids, I was contacted by their design engineer and he really seemed to want to fix things. They did a few firmware updates and initially I thought they’d fixed a lot of issues. But as you see in this vid, it’s just not a reliable unit, the sound is terrible, and the remote a joke.
      They really will have to just discontinue it, redesign a new model and relaunch afresh to try and save their reputation I think.

    No matter what training you have, you’re brain 🧠 will always be better than a 🚗 drivers. Sadly on the A5 2 years ago a rider was injured and ended up loosing his legs. He had observation, he had positioning but sadly couldn’t avoid the 🚗 coming through the dual carriageway wiring and took him out. Sometimes incidents cannot be avoided, just try to minimise injury to you’re self.

      Not really Ben, it’s consistently been outperformed in road handling and performance by all the other main competition, plus I don’t like the look of it to be honest. Thanks Frank, but I don’t subscribe to the hi-viz theory at all on a bike, don’t see how it’ll make any difference at speed. Fair enough slow speeds in heavy traffic, but not out on the open road when speeds are higher.
      I trust lights and a loud exhaust way more, but even they’re not failsafe, I appreciate that.

      @teapotone  6 лет назад

    • @vriendelijkegroet
      @vriendelijkegroet 6 лет назад +1

      teapotone oh yes, the normal GS is definitely a better bike for 'Picos trips'. I have 1200r and the first liquid 1200 GS and changed that one for the GSA. I do long trips, I live in Amsterdam but usually do riding through France from Alps to the Pyrenees, usually stay in Andorra (cheap petrol!) and back. I changed to the GSA for the travelling qualities but its definitely heavier in slower turns. The GSA is quite flickable for such a big bike, but all flattwins have that, even the RT. The XR is great for speedy Gonzales trips, more top heavy (if you get used to flattwins, everything feels top heavy) and the clutch is too heavy, it hurts my left hand after a while. But yes, there is a reason why you see soooo many GS's, they are the best for travelling. I am making routes already for my 2018 trip based on your picos video! Keep them coming!

      It's insane. I used to have that problem where the bike would rocket at 9,000rpm. The dyno showed exactly what was going on now it's smooth and I get get huge power low down.

      It's a bit techy for me but essentially because the cat is removed the engine needs to know about it. I went to HT Motorcycles in Hinckley. They didn't 'remap' the ECU but they call it that because that's what everyone calls it. They did something and now its a different machine (I had the headers delivered straight there and they fitted them for me too).

    Once you have had a car cross your path and bring you off you never ride the same again in my opinion. You are always more conscious that the car could pull out. It gets worse as you get older, not sure why. We are probably thinking that the time to recover is going to take much longer as we age so we become more cautious.

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  6 лет назад

      Very true James. I’m sure there have actually been studies done on how age effects your risk perception and aversion. Pretty much been proven that you do become more cautious as you age.

    Stick to the GS Mark you can't beat it for what we do and want. You will end up a better rider when you are settled mate. Try A GS Adventure you would love it. Excellent vid

      @teapotone  6 лет назад

      Cheers Buddy, I’ve actually ridden the GSA but thought it was similar to the Explorer. Much more top heavy than the GS and didn’t feel as agile for me.
      Still a good bike but I prefer the flick-ability of the GS.

      teapotone I understand you’ve got to get that feeling when your looking for a new machine. I have no idea why I called you Mark in my last message sorry about that. Bruce we had a car crash about 25 years ago and I still have flashbacks when a car is sitting at a T-junction. It’s definitely made me extremely cautious and I think you never stop

    Could BM get any more letters or that on the model of the bike lol. Drift is definately still a major failure. Confidence will come back pal... plenty training and experience on those "broken" shoulders.

      Thanks bud, aye it’ll come with the miles. Just want my own bike again so I can bugger off and get some mileage done.
      Half tempted to just go an order a GS, but know I’d regret not trying the competition out first.
      Hope you’re keeping well bud 👍

    Drift picture quality looks really poor. Sony cams look way better IMO.

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  6 лет назад

      Not tried the Sony, what model
      Do you have?
      I actually like the Drift Ghost 4K picture quality to be fair. If they could put the 4K into the Ghost-S then I’d be perfectly happy to be honest.
      But the Drift Ghost 4K camera is just a shambles at the moment. Wish they’d just scrap it and relaunch a new model.

      teapotone I use Sony FDR X3000 4K, great camera for motorcycle vlogging, has really good OIS and external audio via standard 3.5mm stereo jack. Downside is batteries only last for 1 hour, but that's ok if you carry extra batteries. This example uses external audio (from a seperate audio recorder) ruclips.net/video/TdJ9WDxYegs/видео.html

      @@teapotone sorry , i watched your 1250 r review, that was spot on my man 👍, the xr is fab , but it's only really "fun" at 7k ish onwards by that time errr your nicked , the boxer lump is fun from the off , especially in that 1250r .. so you can crack it and have the thrust on the road and still keep within having your collar felt (ish). So therefore I tend to ride mine with restraint and to be honest it's as dull as dishwater if you ride it like that... Boxer all the way (for the road)

      teapotone Being honest...you're head is not in a place to review any bike. Get your confidence back...then start giving opinions. Seems fair comment

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  6 лет назад

      Not at all. I share everything on this channel, and that includes the good and bad times. A knock in confidence is something lots of people suffer from after an off, I’m no different.
      However it doesn’t impede my ability to review how a bike feels to ME to ride. You may agree with my opinion on it, you may not. It makes no difference to how I view the ride.
      Have you watched any other vids on the channel? Do you know my character? Have you seen me ride outside of this video?
      Confidence will come back with miles and time on the bike, have no fear of that.

    • @allansmillie3263
      @allansmillie3263 6 лет назад

      teapotone I'm not knocking you for a lack of confidence after some offs...and I wish you well getting back up to speed...but your head and road conditions were not allowing you to assess any bike. All the best.
