- After riding Adventure bikes for so long, we had the opportunity to ride the BMW S1000XR. Really surprising bike, great handling, nimble and boy does it shift!!
Thank you to Ocean BMW for allowing us to ride the Euro 3 version of the BMW S1000XR. What a bike!

Was nearly talked into this one after following ‘ A Brit a Blonde and a Bike’ - another RUclipsr now living in New Zealand. Loved it, but went with the GS which gave me all I needed as a tall rider with more tour rather than sport in mind. Thanks again for your viewpoint.
They did a great review too. Great bike but as you say much more emphasis on sport and the GS has it all. Ride safe :)
Totally agree the chain did put me off initially. But that engine and the light weight, electronics and my previous experience with my R1200r sold me. Guess I should go buy some chain oil.
very true matey. happy riding on a great machine :)
Great videos, I made the mistake of riding to Ocean yesterday and Greg let me loose on this bike then the GSA both stunning machines but very sold in the Adventure as the XR is a lot like my Versys 1000. who knows what I will be on at the next CAM meet. Keep up the good work.
thanks Richard... was that you on the lowered Adventure we saw? Great bikes... ride safe :)
It was, loved it
+Richard Harwood excellent :)
Good bike presentation sir. Congratulations! This model will be my next bike.
+Jucelino Melo hey mate, thanks for the kind words. Enjoy your new ride :)
Wow, the chain certainly looks like its lacking in maintenance. Are the roads salted this time of year?
+Jack Peters there is salt on the roads, but the grease they use is a reddish colour. I thought that when I saw it too, but it was well lubricated, just the chain lube/grease was a reddish colour :)
I love my 2016 XR and use it every day in London and to tour. I’ve never had any issue with vibes and after 6000 miles they are a non issue. It’s a wild machine if you want to push it, but it’s comfortable.
Love the gs but it’s a very different character and less exciting but more a accomplished tourer. The XR is comfy but not quite as comfy as the GS.
+Moon Phaser3 loves the XR, great engine and a fab machine too. Interesting that the vibes go after 6000 miles, perhaps it was a running in thing.
Gotta love motorbikes, so much fun every time your on one even if it is to go to work. ;)
Ride safe matey 👍
I rode this bike a couple of weeks ago while my GSA was getting its 600 mile service. Its a great bike like the video says but if I'm honest I wouldn't buy one purely because its chain and not a shaft... Sad I know, I know... After my ride on it I have to confess to having numb fingers, not because I was hanging on but because of the vibrations through the bars. Ride it yourself and let us know your thoughts.
Thats been solved in the 2017 model now I am told and all previous models have got a free retro fix as well :D
BHP Bikes Phew thats a relief because it is a really good bike.
+BHP Bikes ah that's brill as I found the vibes a bit too much
+Mark Holroyd that it is :)
@@BHPBikesuk .Sorry but that's not the case.I have just finished testing a 2019 xr sport se,whilst the vibes are less than the 2015-16 models, they are still evident and still numb your hand after an hour or so.Pity because the bike apart from the vibes,is superb.Of course,it could be just this bike,I have been reading some owner reviews,it seems some owners have the problem and others don't.Should I buy one or not?Well if the vibrations could be reduced even further, then I probably would.
top marks lad. very good video👍👍
+paul mckenna thanks Paul. Glad you enjoyed it. Ride safe buddy :)
so how has bmw advertised the bike as a crossover .but I will agree on how smooth the gear change is .but like most 4 cilinder bike smooth all the way .no like 2 cilinder ploder you eather love them or hate them ...once again great video
+peter foster thanks for your kind words Peter. I guess it was my interpretation of how they have advertised it. As having the performance of a sports bike, the versatility of an enduro bike and the comfort of a touring bike. I'm not sure I'd trade my GSA for one, but a lovely bike all the same. You have to love the bike world, no matter what your taste in bikes is, there is a bike out there for everyone :)
The GS 1200 is a dull bike... I hated it and I have owned 2 explorers... I loved the XR and yes its revvy but it will be fun when you get to some good roads on a tour :D Where was this filmed as well?
BHP Bikes Hiya RiderCamTV is based in Cornwall (how lucky are we?) and this film was made around Falmouth as the bike was loaned to us from Ocean BMW Falmouth.
+BHP Bikes that's what I love about bikes. There's one for everyone :) I find the gsa a great bike and for me as lively on bend (if not as powerful) as the XR.
Filmed in Falmouth Cornwall :)
a fun bike to ride... nive to have as a second bike, but for touring the GSA is better, even a Crosstourer if you dont want to stick with BMW
definately will stick with the GSA.. :)
Talking to Greg he said about you doing test rides, can you do a comparison between the three f800's
+Matthew Brotherton we are looking at riding the f800gt this coming weekend so watch this space :)
RiderCamTV seen you today test riding I was working in the cemetery
+Matthew Brotherton hey mate, great to hear you seen us. New video on the way :)
I think in may have seen you :).
Might be a shout out to you in the F800GT video matey. Whilst we were editing, we spotted you too :) Ride safe :)
Great little review.... Maybe they'll let you take it out for a longer run to see what it's like over a couple of hundred miles? ..... I know you commented on it but why oh why don't they consider putting proper mudguards on? I'd be interested to see how much cr** would be over that rad by the end of the day!
+Paul Smith thanks For the kind words Paul. I'm sure we could do that in time. I wish they they would consider putting proper mudguards on too. Ride safe :)
That's what a jetwash is for
A great review. I was going to do a review on my XR but you ticked all the boxes. 🖒🖒
pretty sure it's 228kg curb weight.
+A Brit A Blonde A Bike that's great. Thank you for your kind words :)
+A Brit A Blonde A Bike you may be right. I think we used the payload weight. Eek!! :)
All good mate. Still a great review.
+A Brit A Blonde A Bike thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Sold my new XR... crap for touring... revs to high at motorway speeds.. needs an additional gear. High frequency vibes despite the heaviest bar ends on the market. Headlights also rubbish in terms of brightness...I do agree that the quickshifter was sublime... the only good point IMO on this bike...
+Robbi Hong Kong I liked the bike when I rode it but for me it will always be the GSA :)
I think it will be ok for touring... I get it will need another gear though... the buzz on old models makes it a bit annoying but that should be fixed on 2017 models :D
+BHP Bikes it is an awesome bike
I would distinguish between 'buzz' and 'vibes'. I tried the 2017 model and there were still some vibes: stopping after a short m/way drive I could feel it in my hands. For me, the problem with the bike is the buzz. As many people have noted, it's undergeared. I also felt that the noise of the bike lulled you in a belief that it was faster than it was. Positive points were the handling and a great quickshifter (as good as the Triumphs). I really wanted to love the bike but overall came away disappointed.
+samsara thanks for the comments, great bike but like you say, a bit underwhelming compared to others in the range :)
I liked your video! I'm biased though
+Jack Peters thanks matey. You got a S1000XR?
Ya, I have a 2016 that I love. The best bike I've ever owned and I've owned a lot. Coming from a 2013 Multistrada sure demonstrate how smooth and well fueled the bike is. Again, the best transmission/motor combo in my experience. The brakes and handling are at the top as well. Handlebar vibration is a non issue as I haven't even changed my bar end weights from stock. I've got 14,000 km on it so far with not an issue. The only thing I've added are a set of Clearwater Darla lights to the fork legs and a Shorai LI-PO battery.
+Jack Peters a great bike which surprised me a lot! Coming from an adventure rider perspective this bike seems as though it could do it all :) ride safe
That's an expensive hack! :D
+GASLIGHT aren't they all :)
lots of vibrations in the right hand, dislike it, after one hour of riding, found it very uncomfortable
+Joe Doe apartently they have improved the 2017 model and sorted that out :)
It's 228kg on the road.
+superbike1 thanks for that. :) in the book it was saying 206 but thanks for the info :)
RiderCamTV 206 dry weight
The pillion seat looks uncomfortable. I'll stick with my new 2017 Kawasaki Versys 1000.
I have 50 miles on my 2018. WOW!
Good review not my type of bike
+Lyn Smith :)
If it's anything like the S1000R, which uses the same 160BHP version of the S1000RR engine it will give you "vibration white finger" after half an hour or less. Cruising at 70-80MPH (or even 60MPH) the constant howl from the exhaust will drive you nuts, and probably deaf. Yes they go like stink if you use the revs, but in the real world I think it's an awful bike, really tiring to ride, the engine constantly too busy and buzzing away, plus it has chain drive. Chain drive, really? on a sports tourer/adventure bike? Who'd have thought that BMW would make a bike that's a pain to actually go any reasonable distance on?
I think you should ride the same route on your GS, then you'll see how much better the GS is than the XR in almost every respect except top end power, which you can't use on the road anyway. Oh and try the XR with a pillion.
+Simoncelli 58 that's very true matey. But there is a bike for everyone out there :) GS is much better for me :)
Not tiring at all. I've toured thousands of miles on mine ie 18K in 18 months. Vibrations are overblown and greatly reduced with heavier bar ends and mileage. The howl is only evident when you're giving it the beans, cruising on the motorway, its no noisier than any other bike. The GS is a great bike, but the XR makes me grin every time I ride it.
