    Thank you I own an 07 R56 S and have been fighting a boost robbing gremlin.. your description of operation I found to be very interesting. My code is 2885 and so far it's kicking my butt. I've been a mechanic for 40 years but these days I'm a vehicle inspector. Anyone tells you that they know it all is full of crap. I don't give up easily and I've seen so many videos trying to find answers and this on is the best.

      You are welcome glad we could help, usually the valve in the turbine housing will get warn out and will rock open due to the wear. If you rock the valve front to back in reference to the car not the travel and the arm moves more than 1/8" the turbine housing will likely need to be replaced. They usually wear out starting about 60k mile and don't last over 120k miles that I have seen. Hope this helps let us know if you need more info.

    Actually, the duty cycle on BMW is to control amount of vacuum to the actuator, the wastegate would not open and close rapidly, but hold in a position according the the WGDC.

      Yeah i agree it is only at 3000 to 3500 that we hear the valve fully opening and closing.

      that might not be good unless you are switching it to a boost operated WG like on 90% of the cars out there. You can go into over boost and the car will cut fuel and open the BOV/DV.

      Yeah a lot of manufactures are going this way, so the WG can be opened when driving. With the WG open you will get better gas mileage since you are not in boost.

    Very detail. My problem is my car is under boost (code P0299) and when the car is idle or off, the actuator is in a fully pull position as if the vacuum is already beilng applied (not sure if it is stuck open or close). I have to pull it away from the actuator to move toward the waste gate. Do I adjust the nut one full turn to lengthen the rod? Would that work or there is another problem?

    For a BMW wastegate, how does the wastegate see vacuum while in boost to close the door further? I understand how at idle the vacuum of the engine pulls it shut and you can bleed that off by exposing it to atmospheric pressure, but what about needing to build boost back up while in boost if it's undershooting target??

    • @jmturbocoopers
      @jmturbocoopers  Год назад

      The ECU doesn't monitor the vacuum pressure it monitors the intake pressure and only cycles the pressure valve to increase the open or closed distance of the valve in the turbine housing. this will change the turbo speed and adjust the pressure in the intake manifold. So the valve will remain more open or closed until the boost pressure needs to change again.

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning Год назад

      @@jmturbocoopers but if the wastegate is normally open and requires vacuum to close, how would the wastegate ever get pulled back shut to build more boost if you're already in boost? Mechanically, not from a control/ECU perspective

    I have a 2012 mini cooper jcw. Whenever I open the flapper I get a code and low boost. But when I have it closed I get good boost and no code unless I redline the car. I have no idea what to do. I changed the boost controller and the vacuum lines and I have a diverter valve and a new wastegate on the way. I also have a new flapper coming but it's difficult for me to change it since I don't have a welder and I don't know how to weld. I'd also have to take the whole turbo out. I'm thinking I should maybe get a whole hot site assembled if I was gonna take out the turbo. And I don't want to change the turbo because it's a JCW turbo and the turbine has no play and it's expensive.

      Usually when you get the 2885 error the housing is warn out, if you have over 80 to 100k miles it will likely need to be replaced.

I notice that I have little power when I give full throttle we have tested the membrane of the turbo that works tested the vacuum hoses that all work well too I also replaced the pressure sensor but I still have the same problem ... could it be the wastegate the problem? sorry for my bad english

    Guess what in saying is that wastegate on my car closed while idle or is it open its a 2014 Chevy Cruze 1.4 l turbo and I was thinking about getting a boost controller and sticking it on the actuator vacuum line which I'm confused about what does the less vacuum cause more boost or fully open what does that do ,or if less vacuum to the actuator cause more boost is to waste gate

    Hi, my wastegate is shut closed tight. The actuator is not holding pressure causing the wastegate flapper to be stucked closed. But I don't know why I am getting a P0299 underboost code. If wastegate is stucked closed shouldn't i be having overboost ? The car runs but has no power slow acceleration. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

      The ECU is programed to open the BOV/DV and reduce timing to prevent over boost. You just need to replace the turbo or housing and it will come out of limp mode.

    • @jmturbocoopers
      @jmturbocoopers  Год назад

      a little less but that depends on how restrictive your intake is on your car. The pressure drop from a bar and plate intercooler is 5 to 8psi and on a tube and fin it is only 3 to 5pis. So you may have to adjust the wastegate because if you have a bar and plate IC the turbo will have to produce 25 to 28psi so you can get 20psi at the intake manifold (Tube and Fin would only need to output 23 to 25psi). Also the pipe that runs from the IC to the intake manifold on the R series turbo cars (excluding Countryman and Paceman) have a restriction in the pipe under the IAT map sensor that can have a similar problem. This just means that some cars have to have the waste gate adjusted so there is less travel.

    Your video was very informative i was trying to find info on vacuum controlled wastegates.
    I have an issue on my car and i try to figure out whats happening...
    So the car experience some lag under 2000 rpm but after i reach 3000 its asselerating rapidly, so much that if i go full throttle aggresivly i get an overboost error . If i dont get an overboost, After it reaches 260kpa (1.6bar) the pressure drops to 0kpa and stays ther for as long as i press the throtle.

    I hate mini coopers because I have owned mini coopers. N14 engines were not meant to push power. 260hp before the rings pop, your pistons disintegrate, and engine ceases to live, lol.
