  • Today I test a Grex Tritium TG3 Dual Action Trigger Airbrush. While this airbrush is on the expensive side, $178 as of this video posting, it performs great and has a great build quality. Plus it's very comfortable in your hand while spraying.

    The airbrushes I use are a Patriot 105 and a Grex TG2. Covers all my bases. Limiting the needle with the back knob can be as detail as I want while still getting good coverage if I pull it further back. I spray a lot of acrylic inks with it and just works. I do prefer the wider opening of the 105 for ease of cleaning, but that's a small gripe when, as you say, it is a comfortable tool to use. Appreciate your videos and look forward to more!

    RainX windshield washer fluid works wonders for final rinse. Really helps prolong tip dry from starting (with acrylics). Also I use it on my tip cleaning “towel”. For five years now and I haven’t had to replace not one single o ring in either of my Airbrush Masters airbrushes. But I also put glycerin in my thinner, so that may help as well.

    Looking forward to more of your paints. I've been using the Black Aluminum quite a bit on my Gundam joints. A tiny amount goes a LONG way, but I was thinking I should get more when you split them out. I do like how smooth they go on with the leveling thinner, I was surprised since they're enamel. So far, no issues, they look real pretty.

    I have the TS & TG models. My kits came the 2, 3 & 5 size needles & the fan air cap, the 3 sizes of paint cups. I also found the 50cc metal paint cups for both guns. These cups are HUGE which I use when painting my bicycles with #5 needle. If you get a #7 needle, get one of these or larger cups. You're probably spraying a larger project requiring a lot more media for coverage.

    I have the Grex Tritium TG3 it’s an awesome AB. I have lost the nozzle cap so you have to be very careful. Just because it is magnetized on both ends you can still lose the cap. I had to buy a replacement OEM cap, in fact I bought SEVERAL so if I lose another I have backups so I highly recommend buying at least one or two spare caps. Maybe one day I will find the lost cap but it’s probably stuck to something metal in my garage somewhere.

I've been looking at the H&S Colani vs. Grex TG3/5 - I prefer sticking to one brand (for parts swapping) and the Colani only seems to be able to swap cups with my other H&S airbrushes. That's a big plus for the Grex now that I know the Grex cups can fit. The fan tips seems like a very nice option. Thanks!

    My Airbrush is exactly like that. Except, it came with a .2, .3 & .5 needles, nozzles & crown along with all three cups & lids. But it’s black instead of green, and it doesn’t have the unnecessary magnetic shroud. And It only cost $45. And it works great. In fact the only problem I have is my tankless compressor, so no complaints, especially since I saved $140+. And a QD with mac valve & 6 nipples $12.
    But if money were no object I would have Grex airbrushes because honestly once you get over a hundred bucks, the differences become so minuscule, it’s not really worth the extra cost.

    It's an interesting airbrush. I own the Monument Hobbies version of the TR3. I am not too fond of the Grex system, for me it's just too many parts to clean. If you like the trigger airbrushes with the double dependent action, then the Harder & Steenbeck Colani might be something for you to review. It has a crazy number of needle sizes it can use, and can fit paint cups from 2ml, 7ml, 15ml, and 50ml.

Even H&S doesn't seem to give it much love! I have some big kits (two 1/12 scale cars, 1/16 dragster, semi truck...) and a trigger airbrush designed for throwing lots of paint would be nice.

  • @bryantdunbar3476
    @bryantdunbar3476 2 года назад +1

    Thank you for the great review. Just a couple of things, the name of the airbrush is pronounced Trit-e-um (think, Spiderman comics/movie) but don't feel bad, I've heard a lot worse,,,lol. You compare the threaded fluid nozzle to the press fit of the Badger, like anything ther are pros and cons. Like you say, using a wrench to remove the fluid nozzle is a bit inconvenient. However, the threaded style helps ensure perfect fluid nozzle and needle alignment. With that said it's appreciated that you mention the quality of the machining of parts and positive interface of the wrench to the fluid nozzle.
    When you bubble back I do recommend keeping the the needle cap on the airbrush. The bubble back effect won't be compromised and ensures the needle remains protected. When using the crown cap I gently pinch the crown cap between my thumb and index finger to create a similar seal and bubble back that way. Again the needle remains protected.
    It's great that you show the trigger stop feature. For general coverage and semi fine line work it does the job nicely. However, when doing fine line work I do recommend developing a good hand eye coordination. With a lot of paint companies going to water based acrylics these days these paints are often susceptible to tip dry issues. So with the trigger stop turned down that much, paint performance may suffer. Every so often I have to "goose" the trigger with a full shot of paint to avoid negative fine line performance with these types of paint. Doing this helps expel paint that's starting to tip dry and introduces fresh paint into the nozzle needle interface. A good way to practice fine line work is to get 3x5 note cards and try to do a fine line over the ruled lines on the card. You will get some wiggle as that is natural (we all have a heart beat) but it helps develop your hand/eye coordination.
    Lastly, and I see this in some of the comments, Grex does make corresponding fan caps for the .3mm, .5mm and .7mm needles. The fan caps are sold individually as well as in kit format similar to what you describe in the video. We do recommend the fan cap be matched with the appropriate size needle and fluid nozzle for optimal performance.
    Overall a great video and thank you for your effort. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us or me directly-

    Love the reviews. I started with airbrush in Art College. It turned out not to be something I was not interested in making marks with but I know my way around an airbrush. 40 years later I added an airbrush station to my studio for facilitating costume and prop parts. I paid the minimum for a decent compressor with a tank and got a crap airbrush in the deal. Now that I’ve familiarized again with the process the airbrush is inconsistent and annoying. I know the upscale brands well but because the airbrush is an occasional tool I would like any advise towards an economical but efficient upgrade. Thanks.

    i have both the tritium tg5 and the genesis xgi3 that i got from spraygunner during their sale, but honestly im not too impressed by them. i still prefer my gsi creos airbrushes over them since they atomize better. i do like that needles and nozzles are interchangeable between both models tho. the magnetic tips are meh, i find that they get knocked off easily while removing them from my airbrush holder and also get stuck inside my spray pot while flushing. also they both spray a lot more air like u mentioned. they feel like they spray around 25-30 psi when set at my regular working pressure of 18 so i tone it down to 12 psi instead, otherwise my compressor runs almost frequently. overall theyre ok but definitely overpriced, would only recommend if you can get them on sale.

    Ironic that you uploaded this test video today. Just saw this brand at my local Hobby Town earlier. They offered a whole set that came with the compressor, the hose, a quick release, trigger brush with handle, 3 or maybe 4 different cups and several other items for a little over $400.00. There was also a slightly smaller bundle for around $380.00.

      @jimhantsch 2 года назад

      @@barbatosrex9473 I was also thinking that. Some of the ones on Amazon are good, but some are not. The advantage of the Hobby Mio one is that it stands up so it doesn't need to be worked over the fan, but in front of it. The Hobby Mio seems to be in the price range of all the others which is around $70. Issues that customers have is how well the fan works at removing dust and the motor being too loud. Maybe the more powerful ones have to be loud to provide enough suction to work right.

    Hello, after the countless tests you have done and given your experience, which airbrushes do you think are best for those who assemble 1/24 plastic and resin kits and especially use primers, lacquers, basecoat and 2k automotive? Do you think it is better to use more airbrushes for each type of paint so as to avoid reactions especially with clear 2K? Thanks

    • @barbatosrex9473
      @barbatosrex9473  2 года назад +1

      I would go with a Badger Patriot 105. It will spray each of those perfectly. I use mine for everything you say including 2K Urethane clears. It's super easy to clean so that's not a problem. I build 1/24 car kits and I use it on those almost exclusively. Get this one here because it comes with the adapter you'll need for the compressor.

    I paint a lot of large scale, (1/12th and larger), model car bodies and was looking at this airbrush. It has a fan cap that can be added and that would allow for a larger spray area over the standard cap.
    I was hoping to see a spray pattern with this one. From what I could tell, it is no different than any other airbrush.
    Do you have plans to get, and feature, the fan cap?

    • @whiterose7055
      @whiterose7055 2 года назад +1

      I have the TG5 and the fan cap kit and use it a lot (for large scale models) . It is definitely worth the extra cash, however using the larger fan cap nozzle requires more air (flow as opposed to pressure) than some airbrush compressors can deliver, so make sure your setup can deliver the higher CFM requirements. You can get around the CFM flow requirement by buying an extra air tank and using as a reservoir to supplement it. The air compressor that I have is an 1/8 hp setup with a small tank (pretty much the same compressor sold under many brand names. ) I purchased a 10 gal tank and piped in parallel with the other tank before the air regulator so both tanks feed the air brush. When running the TG5 with fan cap I can supply the brush with enough flow to operate correctly with a bonus that now I can get a in more than 15 minutes of constant air feed to the brush under high flow conditions before the air compressor cuts in !!!!
      I could have bought a larger capacity air compressor but this one is so quiet; the larger ones were louder. Everything in engineering requires some sort of compromise to meet the set of circumstances at hand.
      Have fun painting :)
