Really enjoyed this - thank you. I might have to go back and reread LOTR with this in mind - I used to reread it around once a year in my teens and 20s, but it's been over 20 years, so it's due a revisit.
Too much ado in the beginning about Tolkien haters. No need to justify a Tolkien episode, he's a perfect subject for this show and I can't emphasize enough how enthusiastically I played this episode the instant I saw it. Frankly I prefer not to acknowledge the existence of Tolkien haters at all, a rabble of mindless orcs, the lot of them.
I find it bizarre that they felt the need to spend so long justifying their decision to talk about Tolkien on a popular history podcast. I guess I'm out of touch with the hate he receives from critics.
I'll say something different, which is that I found it "useful". I've heard that some people despise Tolkien, but I fortunately haven't ever met one in person. It's good to be reminded of opinions outside of my silo.
There is no mistaking the Catholic theology in Tolkien. It's slightly hidden in the hobbit and the lord of the rings, but the simarillion makes it plain and obvious. What makes it great is it's moral way if story telling and how good and evil are put out without ambiguousness without being a child's story.
His sword was long his lance was keen, His shining helm afar was seen, The countless stars of heaven's field, were mirrored in his silver shield. But long ago he rode away, And where he dwelleth none can say, for in to darkness fell his star in Mordor where the shadows are.
I haven't read any of his other work....Love the lord of the rings...The old school cartoon....My dad had a 52 ft house boat out of Charleston S.C...Named...THE HOBBIT..
From what I've heard Amazon doesn't have any rights to any of Tolkien's writing about the 2nd age and yet set their series in the 2nd age. So everything that happens in the series will by necessity be am original fabrication.
Will you please create a podcast on the Pendle witches, a very interesting story, that could probably benefit from some unpicking. Tolkien was influenced by Pendle (misty mountain, lonely mountain) and I'm pretty certain that the withes and stories of this area (where I live) surely will have influenced his stories.
I don’t understand this weird deference to people who don’t like Tolkien and haven’t read him. Why are you trying to convince them? What’s the point of trying to please these people? If they’re not interested, they can just skip this episode. I am not interested in The Beatles, so I will not listen to that episode.
Are these people boomers? I get a very boomer-esque feeling from all this embarrassment around talking about Tolkien in a serious podcast. It’s all very embarrassing apparently.
Well, this is a historical podcast and, as far as I know, Lord of the Rings isn't a true story. Come back when you're old enough to have a sense of irony. I was born with mine, but I am a Punk Rocker.
@@jonhelmer8591 what does the sense of irony have to do with these dudes practically apologizing for talking about Tolkien? And did you miss that they were talking about J. R. R. Tolkien, pretty much a historical figure, first and his biggest creation (LOTR) second?
The Haradrim were 'swarthy' men, but not black. Those from Far Harad, though, are described as 'black men like half-trolls with white eyes and red tongues'.
Still belly laughing my way through these episodes. Gents, you're bringing history to life in such a fun way, this is awesome!

It's a shame more people don't realize that it's possible to enjoy both Tolkien and Virginia Woolf.

I don’t understand that either. If people hate Tolkien, it’s their problem, not ours.

I've never met a Tolkien hater in my life, very strange
Im glad you're onto literature cause that vacation talk was pissing off my broke north American ass
lf you lived in any other developed country you could have that cured without going bankrupt.

Gil Galad was an elven king,
Of him the poets sadly sing,
The last who’s realm was fair and free,
Between the mountains and the sea
His sword was long his lance was keen,
His shining helm afar was seen,
The countless stars of heaven's field,
were mirrored in his silver shield.
But long ago he rode away,
And where he dwelleth none can say,
for in to darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are.
The endless days draw to a final close
As ebon night steals in as it must;
His soul is carrion for the crows
His dreams such things as dust.
Totally enjoyable - Bring on the Elves :)
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this, thank you.

I am not optimistic about the new LOTR. I didnt like those Hobbit movies also. Its not art anymore just cash grab by amazom
The hobbit movies weren't 'bad', definitely not like main 3 lotr, but everything now is bullshit pretty much.

@@DollarGeneral_Is_a_Plague No, they were bad, full stop.
On a total TRISH binge
absolutely brilliant story telling. ive read tolkien books, and ive listened to the audio books. the audiobooks are best
bernard cornwells books have informed millions of people about the middle ages

I read Romance of the Three Kingdoms like Tolkien, epic.
Tolkien's ancestors came from Kreuzburg, which is in the modern day Kaliningrad Oblast
I am learning a lot
Great podcast !!!
I love Tolkien.

What is Gothic language?
I've never read Lord of the Rings or Sgt. Pepper.
Which is best?
Both
the new series sucked hard, Tolkien is on a rotisserie in his grave

Were there black people in LOTR books?
I think the Haradrim are black, the people riding the mumakil, the gigantic elephant-like creatures.

First.
That's not really saying much on this channel or in general.
I honestly don't know why people comment first anyway.
"first" is literally the most common and least seen comment on YT guaranteed.
This is the most attention a "first" comment will ever get.
