After decades of searching and talking to MTV tape collectors, I've finally found the complete 2hr recording of Phish's episode of Hangin' w/MTV. Dating back to mid 90's I've had crude edit version(s) on VHS. This now complete version sheds a little extra light on this oddball afternoon for Phish. Doubling the on-screen time. We've known of some of the music the one-time house band played that day. Notes from Phish.net had listed The Landlady, Buried Alive, Rift, Vacuum Solo, Poor Heart, Guelah Papyrus, You Enjoy Myself, Stash, Jam, Divided Sky. These insights were likely gleaned from the aforementioned circulating versions. This performance is not listed on Phish.com's tour history. This full version adds more snippets. Including host Gale Mayron's introduction, another house band performing on or around the bands equipment, and Trey getting set up a bit. Musically we now hear a glimpse of Buried Alive being played during a "prize cam" segment. The known bit of Buried Alive during the "slug out" is extended from what we previously had available. This new version also has a bit of Rift and Foam during the "slug out" segment. Foam was previously now known to have been played. It also extends slightly the Poor Heart, which can be heard segueing into Big Black Furry Creature From Mars just before the Shut Up & Do It segment. BBFCFM picks up again after the segment during the intro to Pearl Jam's Evenflow video. After Evenflow Phish is seen performing Guelah Papyrus. Soon after a blip of (previously not known) Sparkle is heard leading into Madonna's This Used to be My Playground video.
The audio and video has been remastered for better presentation.
I tracked down Glenville Hopkinson who is seen during the 5th Shut Up & Do It. He has this to say:
"Hahahaha that’s wild! What a blast from the past! I was 19 and my sister was working in NYC so I went over for the summer holiday! Got tickets to MTV and loved it! Phish was great but I have no clear memory of anything specific… it was all very exciting for a guy from Northern Ireland"
