Marc Bolan is a massive influence on so many artists that followed. he paved the way for Bowie and all the hair metal bands and of course Prince. he was a very cool artist. Slider is my all time fav album by anyone.
MARC BOLAN 🎩 Big crush after watching T.Rex’s induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame over a year ago!! I was wowed by Marc who led the way for Glam Rock plus he is sexy as heck! In the U.S. the title was switched from Get It On (Bang A Gong) to the reverse Bang A Gong. Please check out JEEPSTER, METAL GURU, 20TH CENTURY BOY, SLIDER ….. Thanks for your reaction! 👏👏
The super-group Power Station (featuring Robert Palmer on vocals and members of Duran Duran and Chic) scored a hit with a dynamic cover of this in the '80s.
Marc Bolan, the lead singer and guitarist is all about the groove. He comes up with these riffs that just are fabulous. 20th Century Boy is a great rocker.
Prince loved Marc Bolan, he's song Cream is said to be dedicated to Marc Prince joked that the song was about himself looking into the mirror but he also he would pratice in the mirror Bolans move and slso said that watching Bolan taught him how to hold his guitar etc.
One of my favorite songs from 1971 from the Electric Warrior album that peaked at number 10 for 2 weeks on Billboards chart. Originally the song was called GET IT ON but was retitled BANG A GONG { GET IT ON} to avoid confusion with a song of the same name by the group Chase. HOT LOVE, RIDE A WHITE SWAN and MAMBO SUN a few other songs worth a listen. Marc Bolan died in a car crash 2 weeks before his 30th birthday. RIP Marc your music still lives on.
Hearing this while always uplifting, always breaks my heart because I loved Marc Bolan. The androgynous and precocious prince of Glam Rock was the spritely elf, the Legolas of Rock. After sporting a hit and miss career during the 60's, with some following in the underground 'hippie' 'folky community with a style akin to a Donovan. It wasn't until he mutated the group Tyrannosaurus Rex into T-Rex, bought an electric Les Paul, partnered with Tony Visconti and began wearing women's clothes that his ultimate persona blossomed. Marc directly influenced all the British musicians who adopted the style and glam influence. He had a direct rivalry with David Bowie. They played on each others albums and Bowie immortalized him in 'Lady Stardust'. ( react to that one ) Despite the glitter and feathered boas, he was extremely talented and a skilled performer. A ton of artists were influenced by Bolan ( Slash often sported a Marc Bolan T shirt). Glad he was finally inducted into the Rock Hall. I will always be a fan boy.
This was a groundbreaking English rock band that inspired a whole generation of British Rock groups. They along with Mott The Hoople were part of the beginning of the British Invasion that changed rock and roll forever. A lot of bands have covered this song but you might be thinking of Duran Duran's version.
The title of this track is GET IT ON. I know I bought it when it was released in 1971. The world knows it as Get it On it is only the Americans who changed the title to Bang a Gong.
Bolan was the father of glam rock - Bowie, Elton, Rod Stewart - all influenced by him - he was however, a musical chameleon, having done other genres, he did this stuff as a joke, the glitter on his face almost an accident, the whole thing was tongue-in-cheek
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums. Electric Warrior is a tremendous album. Check out Mambo Sun or Rip Off as well. Although my favorite Bolan song is the title cut from the album The Slider. The Slider is one hell of a song!
Loving your reactions to the music of my youth. I remember most of the sixties, and had my favourite songs from 'Top of the Pops' which we watched religiously every Thursday evening, but I was too young to be buying records. MY decade, when I was a teenager, was the 70s. And what a musically rich time it was. I still didn't actually buy many records , as pocket money didn't stretch very far, but we were used to great new songs constantly on the radio every week, and took this for granted ... Everything in the charts was new, and distinct distinct, and clearly the favourites of some fans, whatever the style. We were so lucky. Without intending to plagiarise, it must be hard for musicians today to come up with new sounds, new themes, new harmonies, new orchestrations that don't sound like something that's already been done before. There's such a wonderful back catalogue from the 50s - 80s, as you're finding ...! I don't think you've reacted to any Hot Chocolate yet ...? Errol Brown had such a unique voice, a true sound of the 70s. So many great hits. I love Emma,Emmaline, and you'll probably know 'You sexy thing' , but perhaps check out 'You win again' first....
Ah Harri you done it again you always manage to pluck out songs that I loved from the the 60's and 70's from Brenda Lee,Skeeter Davis,The Cascades, Albert Hammond,The Beatles,Suzi Quatro duet, the Motown artists,The Seekers, Ricky Nelson,Everley Brothers and many more, now T-Rex "Banging the Gong"you gotta be the Harri best, cheers keep it up.🇦🇺
Enjoyed watching Harry. I’m a 66 year old dude that remembers when this song came out. The “chicks “loved to dance to it. It’s nice to see younger people as yourself appreciate it. Just subscribed and looking forward to other reviews .
"Meanwhile I was still thinkin" is a line from Chuck Berry's Little Queenie, which was masterfully covered by the Rolling Stones with a great performance by Charlie Watts. ruclips.net/video/CfV7eSoRpCk/видео.html
This band was not some nothing band. Explore why they didn’t (were unable to go) on. T-Rex was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame a couple of years ago. I love them. So many great songs. Lead singer Marc Bolan is has such a stage presence. He was a big influence on Prince, Eddie Mercury, David Bowie, Elton John, and Billy Idol. Those are the ones I know of.
Another star gone too soon. Marc Bolan & T. Rex is amazing. He hung out with David Bowie, Ringo Star and many others including Howard Kaylen and Mark Volman (Flo and Eddie and The Turtles).
Iconic Glam Rock band. Other Glam rockers would be David Bowie, the early Roxy Music and Mott the Hoople. Two albums from T. Rex I can recommend would be "Electric Warrior" and "The Slider".
What is ironic to me is most of his songs have "car" themes to them. Marc was scared to drive and tragically it was in a car accident where his girlfriend was driving...he died & she was hurt but survived. Their son now does music which I'm sure he has Marc's influence when performing. thanks for sharing Harri :)
Marc was a big influence on all the future 'glam' rockers. There are some youtube clips out there of him playing with the likes of Elton John and Ringo Starr that are cool. oh yea, he was an influence on Sir Elton as well. David Bowie, Mick Jagger, etc.
A true original artist in every sense of the word. I can totally see Prince being influenced by Marc Bolan mannerisms. 1971 was a great year for rock and the precursor to glam and punk. On a side note I would like to request another tune from that same year that was a precursor to many styles of music that followed. That track is Double Barrel by Dave and Ansel Collins. It is considered to be one of the first Reggae/Ska hit to chart number one on Billboard chart. I will provide you the link below of them perform that track on Top of the Pops in 1971. It is track that deserves to be discovered. ruclips.net/video/UQNPiUuU58Y/видео.html
Power Station a supergroup made up of musicians from other groups covered this song. It was a great cover and I think you should react to that version as well
Speaking of versions of this, Cigarettes and Alcohol by Oasis is heavily (ahem) 'inspired' by this. Good shout with the comparison with Prince. I like that. Both real showmen and born stars.
You play so many songs that I remember from when I was young. This was played alot, and then they played the covers, and the original became popular again because of course it's good.
Super groove! "You're windy and wild, oh yeah \ Well you're built like a car \ You've got a hubcap diamond star halo" -- When I heard this song as a teenager I always thought he was comparing his girl to a Chrysler, perhaps because back in the 70's the Chrysler logo was a star inside a pentagon of the sort you might find stamped onto a hubcap.
A few other songs that come to mind where men anthropomorphise their cars, compare their cars to women, or women to cars: The Travelling Wilburys - Dirty World Queen - I'm in Love with My Car (Roger Taylor) Neil Young - Long May You Run
Blondie recorded a live version of the song on 4 November 1978 at The Paradise Ballroom in Boston, MA, which can be found on their 1978 live album, Headlines, and also on the 2001 reissue of Parallel Lines. In 1979, studio disco group Witch Queen released a disco version of the song, titled, "Bang A Gong". It peaked at number eight on the disco charts. In 2020 U2 covered the song, with Elton John on piano.
I was a fan of both but when I heard It's only rock n roll I thought the stones were just copying T.rex.The USA missed out big time. I guess Bolan was just a bit too early and the yanks were not ready.
Love the T. Rex song. From about the same time, a good one for your reaction is Loggins and Messina “Trilogy: Lovin’ Me / To Make a Woman Feel Wanted / Peace of Mind” from the album Sittin’ In (1971).
Good reaction. At the end where he sings "Meanwhile, I'm still thinkin'." I always wondered if that was a reference to a Chuck Berry song. Chuck Berry played in London in the early 1970's ('71-'72) (about when this album came out) and recorded his first gold record. I always wondered if Marc was trying to acknowledge all Mr. Berry has done for rock and roll.
Harri, my man ... you were so VERY CLOSE !!! This was done by Power Station, a group that Robert Palmer was in. Here is some interesting information about them that I dug up for you: "On 16 February 1985, the band performed "Some Like It Hot" and "Get It On" on Saturday Night Live. It was the only time that Robert Palmer performed live with the original line-up. The horn section for The Power Station's Saturday Night Live appearance included saxophonist Lenny Pickett, who would join the show's house band that fall and eventually become the show's musical director." Update: Ok, so you DID figure out who it was on your own. I had already written my comments before I saw that so, forgive me for jumping the gun.
No he didn't, Tony Visconti was their producer. Ringo Starr filmed the movie 'Born to Boogie' which documented the T.Rextasy happening at the time. Featuring 2 sold out concerts at Wembley - IN ONE DAY, WOW
There are better videos of this song out there. But I do love the sound of T-Rex. The lead singer’s facial expressions have always reminded me a dinosaur. Some sort of raptor, maybe.

Marc Bolan died in a car accident in 1977. He was a guest star on The Midnight Special in 1976. Chase also released a 1971 song called Get It On.
Marc Bolan is a massive influence on so many artists that followed. he paved the way for Bowie and all the hair metal bands and of course Prince. he was a very cool artist. Slider is my all time fav album by anyone.
You mean Prince reminds you so much of Bolan.
This original is FAR better than the Power Station cover, and I love Robert Palmer.
This is the beginning of Glam Rock.
I remember when this song came out. Time has not diminished my appreciation. I was 25 at the time I'm about to be 77 in a week. Still love it!

Bro T Rex is one of the greatest uk banks to ever do it!!!
T.Rex and Marc Bolan were and are fabulous - so influential and creative.
I love your reactions to these great songs! You have excellent musical taste!
This is the first, the best and the original!
You can't take your eyes off of Marc in that video, either!
The super-group Power Station (featuring Robert Palmer on vocals and members of Duran Duran and Chic) scored a hit with a dynamic cover of this in the '80s.
My favorite song of his. Also loved Jeepster.
Marc Bolan is the BEST … this genius is so underrated, I love you Marc your music makes me so happy and you were so freaking HOT ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Ahhh…back to my teens again. I love it. Rock on Harri! 🌺✌️

This whole album ‘Electric Warrior’ is excellent
So is their "Slider" album.
One of the best albums ever made.
Just so we understand "get it on" is having the old inout and "bang a gong" is having a toke. Ah the great 70s.
I was 17 when this dropped.
We were wizzing at all nighters in and around London at the time and this was on everyone’s speakers.
Well I'm glad somebody cleared that up for me!! Seriously! I had no idea what the hell he was talking about!! LOL!!

Power Station a supergroup made up of musicians from other groups covered this song. It was a great cover and I think you should react to that version as well
Why, it's totally inferior to the original in every way?
My first ever gig. I was 13.
Speaking of versions of this, Cigarettes and Alcohol by Oasis is heavily (ahem) 'inspired' by this.
Good shout with the comparison with Prince. I like that. Both real showmen and born stars.

Great job Harry...keep em comin...
Rockin' big time
Great reaction ❤great song❤don’t ever give up the reactions man, in my opinion your the man👌
A few other songs that come to mind where men anthropomorphise their cars, compare their cars to women, or women to cars:
The Travelling Wilburys - Dirty World

Neil Young - Long May You Run
FUNKY and I love it, also loved Robert Palmers version
I remember the chorus! Great pick and reaction Harri!

Damn I am so glad you said Prince I thought I was the only one who thought that.Thought I was imagining it
I am big fan of both.
Thank you..im glad i wasnt mad 😀
Me too...if you heard Prince's song "Cream" it has a similar groove
Power Station (Robert Palmer)
Funny, but the sound of this classic song always reminds me of The Rolling Stones. Apparently, Jagger and Richards loved T-Rex.
I was a fan of both but when I heard It's only rock n roll I thought the stones were just copying T.rex.The USA missed out big time. I guess Bolan was just a bit too early and the yanks were not ready.
We were on..A lot of drugs..back then! The Stranglehold !?
This was in the movie soundtrack for "Billy Elliot".
Still relative today.
We lost him way to soon
It's the original song.
bongos are almost exclusive to the 70s
Witchqueen did did a version in 79, check it out.
Love the T. Rex song. From about the same time, a good one for your reaction is Loggins and Messina “Trilogy: Lovin’ Me / To Make a Woman Feel Wanted / Peace of Mind” from the album Sittin’ In (1971).
Or even "Angry Eyes", both great!
@@randy8297 Yes, "Angry Eyes" is outstanding. I saw Loggins & Messina at the Forum in Inglewood CA around 1973 or so, and they really rocked.
Tyrannosaurus Rex!
Good reaction. At the end where he sings "Meanwhile, I'm still thinkin'." I always wondered if that was a reference to a Chuck Berry song. Chuck Berry played in London in the early 1970's ('71-'72) (about when this album came out) and recorded his first gold record. The Power Station version embodies all the vulgarity of the 80s. T Rex is the original.
You ever heard Traffic....Dear Mr. Fantasy?
The intro is the same as Georgia Satellites, caught me off guard.
you mean the revers Thats how influential Bolan was or is.
Good shout.@@twisttrax
Still waiting for you to play more Suzi Quatro. Can-the-Can is classic. She influenced Joan Jett & other female rockers.
Might have been The Firm who did a remake, I will check
Nope, all I get back from there is Radioactive, which you really need to check out if you haven’t already
Ringo Starr helped produce for this group
No he didn't, Tony Visconti was their producer. Ringo Starr filmed the movie 'Born to Boogie' which documented the T.Rextasy happening at the time. Featuring 2 sold out concerts at Wembley - IN ONE DAY, WOW

The Power Station did it in the 80's. What a classic awesome track!😆
Harry there's hope for u yet to appreciate the originals over the remakes u heard first. Come Harri ull get there
