In his first televised debate with Rishi Sunak of the campaign, Sir Keir said his party would raise “specific taxes” and defended his planned VAT raid on private schools.
The 70-minute encounter between the party leaders often became heated with the two men interrupting and talking over each other as they clashed on issues including defence, the economy and net migration.
Mr Sunak said Labour would raise taxes by £2,000 for every family, the product of a Treasury analysis of Labour policies, although Sir Keir later dismissed the figure as “nonsense”.
In his closing statement, the Prime Minister said: “You don’t know what you’d get and neither does he... Keir Starmer is asking you to hand him a blank cheque when he hasn’t said what he’d do with it.
“In uncertain times we simply cannot afford an uncertain prime minister. If you don’t know what you’re going to get with Labour, don’t vote for them.”
Appealing to voters minutes earlier, Sir Keir told viewers: “Imagine how you would feel about waking up on July 5 to five more years of the Conservatives... the arsonists handed back the matches.
“Now imagine turning the page with a Labour government that rolls up its sleeves and gets on with the job... The choice at this election is clear, more chaos with the Conservatives or a chance to rebuild Britain with a changed Labour Party.”

Rishi does not need the money and is clearly rich and not through his PM salary which is taxed at 40%/45%.
Not sure why Starmer needs to continue to increase the tax with a £2000 increase. At this point would it even be worth working?

How so exactly? seems to be doing alright right now. Growth is higher than all major european powers, inflation is low. What’s labour’s plans? increase taxes? tax trust funds? way to drive out all the wealth

Where does anyone with a brain think the money will come from ? The people working or those that do not.
The rich. They have the assets and need to be taxed more to get it back in gov hands and thereofore the common man.
There are other ways of raising money (by the way, despite the Telegraph lying - it's known as the Torygraph for good reason - Starmer did deny the claim and so did the Treasury), from borrowing, to reallocating money that's currently being wasted, etc.
Rishi is a billionaire. He doesn't need to do politics for money. Starmer wants to get rich(er)
How anyone can look at how the Tories have used every opportunity to feather their own already substantial nests (PPE fast lane scandal?) and decide that are corruption proof is beyond me.

Sunak has to go for many reasons, but the main one is that he is risking WWIII with his madness in supplying advanced and highly destructive military equipment to Ukraine. The cause and history of this war are far from the way it is being represented by the mass media. Sunak would do anything to be PM, for weird reasons maybe to live up to the expectations of his 'billionaire wife'. The whole constellation is an insult to those who suffer from the results of inequality and neglect. War veterans are living on the streets with no help whilst Sunak and his Billionaire Wife live a life in plenty and affluence not caring an inch for those less fortunate. The question is, who actually does care, certainly not Stamer, but maybe the Reform party?

Sunak made a confirmed lie (2k tax hike) the centre piece of his debate strategy.
This didn't age well. A treasury note confirms it was a figure made up but Tories - not independent at all - and they resent it having been presented as a treasury figure. In other words, the Treasury have told us that Rishi Sunak lied.
This is a world apart from the zoos we see in the US.
Actually, this debate reminded me of the first Trump/Biden debate. The way Sunak kept talking over both his opponent and the moderator was very boarish.

Good. Raise taxes. Properly fund the NHS and support those who need it. I'm a higher rate tax payer and I'd happily pay a little bit more to make the changes needed to unf*ck the country from the absolute state the Tories have left in.

@@addy5572Considering the only taxes Labour have announced are on private schools, energy companies and non-dom millionaires I wouldn’t worry. He’s clearly stated that he’s not raising taxes on families.
We already have the highest taxes for 70 years! The NHS is properly funded, but not properly run. It needs reform, not more money thrown at it like a bottomless pit. Also there are too many people using the NHS who have never paid a penny into it.
