    OK, I'm going to bee honest here, that was the largest swarm I have caught all year, but here's the rest of the story:
    On Monday morning, May 14th, I went to the car port in Mandeville to remove a swarm that had just moved in two days prior. I had to remove the soffit on the car port to get to the bees, and there the swarm was.....it was HUGE. I started removing double handful of bees till I had taken about 3/4 of them out, and then the bees ran to the back, out of my reach. I then sprayed Honey robber into the space to chase them towards me, and it worked. The bees ran along the joist towards daylight. Then, out of the mass of bees, I spotted the queen, a big girl, and I made my move. Unfortunately, when I looked into the cage, she was not there, she had eluded me. The next thing I know, the air was full of bees and all the bees in the box were gone. The entire mass of bees had gone up into an oak tree 80 feet up.
    I have all this on video which you will see NEXT week, but for now, we will just dwell on the positive aspect of catching a massive swarm, and transferring them into a larger box. I hope you will enjoy the adventure as much as I did. God's peace to all.
    Mr. Ed

    Nice catch Mr. Ed! You must have some kind of magic power to get a swarm of that magnitude to just swarm right into your box! Didn't even have to shake 'em out of a tree or any thing. I used to live on a 150acre orange grove and there was a tree with a box mounted to the upper part of the tree and everybody including the crews that would harvest the oranges were scared of going to that tree they would skip it and the ones immediately around it, but my friend and I would get ladders after we got thick clothing and netting on and go get the oranges from the tree and we would have them all over us but we were only stung once or twice but the oranges and the juice we made from them was well worth the stings we suffered we would have tons of oranges and we would freeze the juice for drinking all year round and when the frost did damage to the other trees that give tree and the ones that were immediately around it still turned out amazing oranges I was never once sick when I lived there alls I drank was orange juice but it was an organic orange grove and all the other orange grove owners used pesticides in their groves which is why you dont see beehives in them.

    To Jeff and DirtRooster, a simple divise I created to carry in your bee removals when you use a vac, it consists of 2 pieces small dia. hose, a plastic mayo jar lid with 2 holes the hose fits snuggly into and a suiable glass or heavy plastic jar the lid will screw onto, one is attach to vac's pre-suction side the other is used as a liquid honey suction wand, the honey collects in jar, makes nice unmessy comb removal, as you vac the bees, just remember this devise needs more suction than your bee vac wand so hook in before you vac reducer valve on your bee collection box so it gets full suction. Hope try it and find what cheap great tool it is.

    Ever since I had a dog get killed by yellow jackets, I just always keep a long distance from anything that flew and could sting! "no exceptions!"
    But, watching you, Dirt Rooster, and a few others on the internet, my fear has gone to just real admiration, for you guys "and ladies too," in the honey bee world, and ofcourse, the honey bees themselves!

    That hive will need an immediate super stack.

    • @billiamc1969
      @billiamc1969 6 лет назад +4

      Jeffrey Tipton xDefinitely agree...be interesting to see if they stay in the have after transfer...absconding colonies won't stay put...the queens are terribly out of balance and are normally on a suicide mission...likely high mite loads and lots of workers carrying mites...course the original swarm trap was only a 5 frame nuc box which makes it seem bigger than normal...but fascinating to be sure!!!!

    Caught one like that here the other day. A ten frame deep wasn't enough. Found it 50 feet away from my hives. Turned out to not be one of mine either. I couldn't believe it. Tried to get them in the ten frame, they drew comb for 2 days and the queen even started to lay eggs. Then went out this morning to the box being empty. A small small amount of bees that stayed with the very few eggs that were laid. Totally scratching my head at this one. I think the ten frame wasn't big enough for the queen I guess.

    I've been watching several of these videos and it is very interesting.
    But without sounding to stupid cause I know some people like to bash a person Reguardless. I have a simple question...what is the sugar water for, what does it do?
    I'm 50 yrs old now, but back when I was 15 I worked weekends for a guy doing small jobs. But he was a bee keeper and he was teaching me many things about bees before he passed away.
    I Helped him gather sworms plus even helped him extract honey using one of those pots ya slide the combs down in and using a handle, swirl it real fast so the honey flings out.
    My gosh it was good stuff.
    One time he put some honey on my hand and said hold still.
    Within a few minutes, bees started landing on me. Before to long my entire hand and forearm was covered.
    Freaked me out, but it was a neat experience.
    Bees are remarkable creatures to say the least.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 лет назад +1

      I use the sugar water to calm and distract the bees. They busy themselves cleaning the sugar off each other and that enables me to go about moving the bees and not having them angry. Good question. Thanks for asking and watching. God's peace.

      In addition, it's probably one of the largest swarms you ever caught of all time. Between when you started and today, it belongs on a top 10 largest swarms Mr. Ed has ever caught.

      I added another 10 frame box on it this afternoon, the girls thanked me for the addition. I think it may have been the largest swarm I have ever caught, it's definitely in the top 3. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
