Like you said, this was heartbreaking. A healthy strong hive like that, lost because of circumstances out of their control. I'm thankful that there's someone like you, who will go out and take a chance on bees who need your help. Our world is better for it.

Ok. It's me again making suggestions. It would be great to have a short video telling everybody your history. How you got started with bees, and how you ended up at the abbey. Maybe with some early pics. Thanks again from Boston. Ps I'm still waiting for a hurricane preparations vid, and a tour of the bee yard and how you choose to intersperse them. Thanks again.
I can promise a tour of the bee yard here at the abbey, it's on my "to do" list.I will consider you other request though. By the way, I have a sister who lives in Boston, and she watches my videos as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace Janice. Mr. Ed
You are always interesting and inspiring! I trust that this swarm is in the best hands-yours-and that the hive will thrive! I’m going to have to research a little to find out how to order your Abee honey!
I agree i think many of us would love to know how you got started with your passion 🖤 you are just such an interesting beautiful person we wanna know all about you !
That's one sad story. Once bees have abandoned the comb, chances of the colony making it are next to none. I would probably have newspaper merged them with a healthy hive right away. They say you win some, you lose some, but that doesn't make losing feel any less bad. You gave them the best chance you could, that's what counts! Thanks for another sad but great video!
I pretty much knew it was over for them when I saw they had abandoned the comb, but when they clustered the queen cell, it gave me hope. Had I merged them sooner , it would have really helped the hive they joined, but that hive is still very active today. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
@Jeff Horchoff It was a small colony without brood, with at best one queen that had to hatch, mate, and start laying, just after winter. The numbers would have dwindled at first anyway, and checking for new brood would have further stressed an already struggling hive. I'd have done the same thing. I never merge bees from a colony I don't know the health status of.
I'm not a fan of merging bee either, you never know if they have a virus, but I felt it was a safe bet seeing the size of the hive when it was in the tree. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
@Jeff Horchoff When after a month you saw no abnormal patterns of demise, I'd say it was safe enough to merge them. Especially if, like you said, the fallen hive looked healthy. What a shame though. I saw at least two huge combs full of brood. Kudos for also showing the sad stories. It's the sour that makes us really appreciate the sweet.
I hope the girls made it one of my hives was an RV rescue they moved the RV causing the hive to collapse. Unfortunately most of the bees parished but I managed to save the brood and a few bees. Now they are one of the strongest colonies I have.
Good Friday morning compassionate sir. It almost broke my heart to hear this. Its better to leave them alone in the wild I think. But when you have a situation such as this, you have to do what you have to do. Just hopefully all will be well once they are secure. Bless you Mr. Ed for helping the world.
the problem now with varroa mites is, wild colonies will die without help. varroa came from asia, with our shipping trade with china. apis millifera, (our honey bees), are almost defenseless against mites, and now hive beetles. they can stand off wax moths, but varroa mites bring diseases, that also affect them heavily. so man brought them here from europe, and now has brought something horrible to them as well. I keep my bees with oxcylic acid, which is a natural chemical, or organic chemical, and is 70 times as toxic to the mites as the bees.
Thank you for your kind words and your support for the effort I make to save bees. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 6 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come. This hive continues to grow and thrive in it's new location, and I recently posted an update on it. I will include a link to it in this comment. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. I post a new video every Friday morning. God's peace. Mr. Ed ruclips.net/video/lRmEbFtSl9c/видео.html
Thank you for loving the bees. I hardly ever see a honey bee, wasp or hornet or bumble bee. North Central Indiana. I have many water sources, flowers + flowering bushes, do not use sprays or chems, only herbal or spice weed killers, have frogs + toads + birds of all kinds, chem trails have damaged trees + just now seeing grasshoppers, praying mantis again. Thanks so much for saving bees!
It is such a sad state of affairs with the diminishing populations of bees and other pollinators. Thankfully, hobby be keeping is on the rise, and it may be the very salvation of bees. We desperately need more bees, and I'm just trying to do my part. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
We do get some cold snaps here in Louisiana, and it is common to happen in early April which is exactly when this video was shot. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Our poor Bumble bees are OFFICIALLY on the Endangered Species list. Totally hurts my soul! I’m not sure if you work with a certain type or different species but I’m so greatful that we have people like you on this earth! Gives me so much hope! Once again, great video! Thank you for sharing 😘

The endangered list hardly ever seems to be shrinking, but just think, if bees would not be here, we'd be on the list with the bubble bees. I'm happy to do my part and share the experience. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Mr. Jeff, So glad to see a new video from you!!!! I am sorry that this colony was really not very salvageable, however I applaud your efforts. God Bless you dear Brother. Rick in Pa.
Thank you for your blessing Rick, and it's good to hear from you. Not every rescue is a success, but the effort needs to bee made. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
They say that if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life, & wrangling honey bees seems like a lot of fun for someone like myself. & it definitely seems like you enjoy it yourself Mr. Ed, always flashing them pearly whites when a queen's found
It's great to hear folks like when I share my wrangling experiences. I'm happy to do it, and happy that you are following along. Till next week, God's peace. Mr. Ed
Thank you Mr. Ed for what you did to save these girls. I have every hope that they will recover under your excellent care. Since they had a good healthy hive before the tree came down, we can at least be sure they know what to do to create a good healthy future for themselves and their colony.
Sad news Julie, you need to read the description, the cold got the queen cell, and I had to merge the remaining bees with another hive. I gave it my best shot, but these girls where past help. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Such a shame that all the brood was lost. My question is, are you able to use the honeycomb wax? Thanks for all you do for bees and honey and for sharing with us. Blessings.
Thank you for your blessing, I always appreciate them. The comb is always useable, and some was saved to be used in my swarm traps come spring. Nothing gets wasted. It's my pleasure to share my wrangling adventures....good or not so good. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Hey JP, I hope all is well my brother. I've been sending you some work, I hope that's working out for you as well. Soem of the bees were saved after they were merged, but it was disappointing that the queen never emerged. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
It's sad these bees wouldn't make it on their own. They never stood a chance without some help. Now I hope the next cutout is more successful that they can make it. I would like to see a December beehive removal if you can after October and November hive or swarm removals. Peace!
Despite my intervention, I was to late and the hive never made it. I ended up merging the bees with another colony, and that one is thriving. I have several cutouts in the next few weeks and will continue doing them through January. They have all had a tremendous survival record. Till then, God's peace. Mr. Ed
I shot this video in early April, and it was abnormally chilly for us at the time. Most of the videos I will be posting in the next few months, I post a new video each Friday, are all back dated as I was posting all my swarm catches and it took 2 months to do that. Thanks for watching, and I'm looking forward to hearing from you again. God's peace Joe. Mr. Ed
Jeff Horchoff I enjoy your vids Jeff you and dirt rooster are all I watch when it comes to 🐝 love you guys keep up the great work I’ll be waiting and watching
I did give it a good try, but the bees had to be joined to another hive as they never recovered from this disaster. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
It's not quite that cold here in Gulf-Coast Texas. I've got a fallen rotten tree that has had bees in it for a couple years. It continues to rot and I'm afraid the hive limb will fall apart soon. I'd like to capture and rehouse them. I'm not a bee keeper but these types of videos inspire me. But I don't want to do it wrong and wreck it for them.
Removing bee from trees is not an easy job, unless you can open the trunk up. Over the next few weeks I will be showing videos of tree removals, and it may give you the confidence to try it yourself. Keep me posted, and thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
It was fortunate finding the queen cell, but she never emerged and I merged the remaining bees with another hive. If you read the description of the video, you can read the entire story. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Unfortunately, there will be no follow up, the bees were merged with another colony as they were failing due to the fact their queen never emerged. That's the agony of bee keeping for you. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
I notice every person that writes a comment to me as I respond to them. However, if you simply comment on a reply someone else has made, I do not see those and can't reply. Thank you for being a fan, and letting me know you are watching. I'm looking forward to hearing from you again on more of my bee wrangling adventures. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Ah, GOYELS! You best walk the straight and narrow or it'll bee knot knocking time for you, Buddy! And all you can do is what you can do. God Almighty blesses your and Roosters efforts all the time. Gods Peace is here AND with you!
I think i'll take the 45 degrees. Stay warm and watch lots of Mr. Ed's video when it to cold outside to do anything else. Thanks for watching. God's peace Owen. Mr. Ed
Jeff what is in the spray bottle that you called "honey robber"? I don't remember if you told us before. That queen cell will become a productive queen one day. Let's pray that she and her sisters make a great hive. God bless you.
I'm curious about that too. I know of its existence, but nothing like it is sold here in northern Europe. If it's not banned, maybe we should think about starting to import it. I've had several situations where it definitely would have come in handy.
Honey Robber is the liquid used to run bees off their honey supers in a bee box. I use it as well to run bees out of inaccessible spaces, they can't stand the way it smells. Unfortunately, the cold killed the queen cell as well as all the brood. The remaining bees were merged with another hive which still is thriving today. Thank you for your blessing and for watching JJ. God's peace. Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff I am glad that you were able to give those girls a new home with other bees. I do not know much about bees and their habits of living with other bees but I do know that they all work for one purpose, to breed and survive. I watched a video of a guy here in Southern Arizona who gets rid of "Killer Bees" we have a lot of Africanized bees here and although their venom is the same as regular honey bees They are 20 times more aggressive than those sweet honey bees in LA. Here the man does not use poison, Praise God, but uses soap water to kill them. Believe me not only do they produce much more honey and much more aggressive, but they also have stronger queens which produce more bees. Our swarms here are normally 40 to 60K bees. It would take only one to kill me as I am very allergic to bee venom. They have killed many people across South, Central and now North America. The man who gets rid of the bees tries to get their honey which he has turned into a lucrative business. I thought of the bees in your area being so calm even when they swarm and are angry, hundreds do not go after someone who disturbs their nests for a quarter mile with one intention to kill the disturbance. I am so thankful that your bees are not THESE bees. Smoking them seems to just make them more aggressive. But this Honey Robber is something they could use here to gather the fruits of these bees. Even with the destruction of hundreds of thousands of A bees here they are spreading. They seem to be adapting to cooler temps up north even as far as Wisconsin. Of course with harsh winters many of them die. I was hoping to put this guy into getting the Honey Robber stuff so that he could get their comb without so much destruction. I hope and pray you never have to face the full onslaught of a killer bee attack. It is a terrible thing to see. I love my honey from you and am willing to donate to the Abbey every year for another pound of it. Being it is pure and not mostly corn syrup I do not have to use so much. It helps me fight off colds and cold sores. It is in my tea, my oatmeal and in my yogurt. You are so dear to me as a friend (albeit on the net) but also as a brother in Christ. Keep doing what you do and know you are prayed for with every capture. God be with you. JJ
@Mr. Ed, I tried that, but Mann Lake can't ship it to the EU. The active ingredient, N-Butyric Anhydride, is sold as a chemical here locally, but about 5x more expensive than Mann Lake's prices.
If the rest of the capped brood and larvae were chilled and dead, how would the Queen cell be viable? Is the queen cell walls thicker and more protected?
The queen cell had perished as well, I was just holding out hope since the bees clustered on her when I placed her in the box. To my knowledge, a queen cell is no more protected than a workers cell. Thanks for watching. God's peace Mary. Mr. Ed
Upper 30s F / 3-4° C in Louisiana in April 2018? I didn't realize that it ever became so chilly down by the Gulf. Sorry to hear that these girls didn't flourish, but you gave 'em the best possible chance.
Thank you for your blessing Ace, it was a valiant attempt. If you read the description of the video, you will know the entire story behind this rescue. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
I do a few of them, and the most recent was on concerning the hive that had received almost 8 million views. I figured there may have been many folks wondering how the hive was doing so I made one. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
I'm curious about something. If I'm correct, in the New England states it is illegal to disturb, alter, destroy, move another fisherman's lobster traps. What laws are there to protect a hive in this manner? By placing your box there do/have you staked a claim on those bees?
Pat Bubba I’d think the law wouldn’t apply as the bees originally were not in a hive, but in a natural space, i.e., feral. If the bees were previously in someone else’s hive and Mr. Ed came in and took the bees from one hive to put them into his hive, that probably would be theft.
@@JudyHart1 He's wrangling feral bees into his box. If they adopt Mr. Ed's box, or he catches them, does his work in this situation equate somewhat a similar protection afforded to Maine lobstermen and their lobster traps?
There is no protection of the claim other than what God provides. It's always a risk to leave something unattended even if there are laws to prevent obstruction or theft. Often, I rely on the remoteness of the location to prevent theft or disturbance as was the case here. Very good question Pat. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
Just curious and I wasn't able to find the answer in the comments. Why was the queen cell savable but the rest of the brood was a lost cause? did they instinctively protect that cell at the cost of the others? thanks for all the great videos!
Very often the queen cells offer more insulation to protect the larva, but even that was not enough for this queen, she never emerged, and the bees eventually were merged with another colony. Glad you liked the video, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling adventures, I post a new one every Friday. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Question on putting the hive in a nuc, could you just leave them in the 10 -frame box, but take out 5 frames? Or, put in empty undrawn frames? As long as the entrance was small they could control the space they have. I’ve observed and surmise that bees can control large empty spaces just fine. I.e., have three small combs in a log that is 20 gallons large. I’ve been watching some German and Brit videos, where they don’t use many nuc songs, but put splits into 10 or 8 frames. I could use a Devi’s Simon board too? The top bar hives often have have a lot of open space too. Hope to buy some Abbey Honey when I’m in your neck of the wood over Christmas week. Blessing from Eric. (aka BernieBe)
I'm always worried about giving the bees to much space on cut outs. The bees are very stressed to begin with and I believe that stress releases pheromones that hive beetles detect. If there are not enough bees to patrol the area, this becomes an easy target for the beetle. I just play it safe that's all. Great comment Eric, and get in touch with me if you do make it down here for Christmas, I'd love to show you our bee operation. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Thousands of bees were killed when the tree hit the ground, and many more were lost when the night temperatures dropped in the 30's. If you read the description of the video, you can read the entire story. Thanks for watching. God's peace Cheryl. Mr. Ed
I don't know about that, I was stung 3 or 4 times on this one. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. Honey Robber is a liquid that stinks to high heavens. It is used to drive bees from honey supers so they are not on them when you collect your rent. You can but it from any bee equipment supplier, I buy mine from Mann Lake Bee Supplies. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Shame here, it’s sad there what I see is these bees have the best chance of survival because your there. No sadness I rejoice that those bees live close enough to you for you to swoop in and give them the best chance as possible to recover and thrive. What would be sad is if this hive was out of your reach. Because of you that hive will probably be productive and producing so much by next fall your will be able to harvest honey from them. It is you and other professionals like you that I have hope that bees will still be alive and well in the future in North America. I enjoy your videos and I know just how important your work is for the bees and humans.
Thank you for your support in my effort to rescue bees, it is a passion for me. If you read the description of the video, you will discover the fate of these bees. Thank you for your kind words and for following along. God's peace. Mr. Ed
hey i have a question, i was just outside throwing a ball for my dog, and out of nowhere a massive swarm of bees flew by and it lasted about 10 secs, i wasnt able to record it though, so i was wondering if u knew what just happened
My guess is that an entire bee hive had just left it's previous location, in other words, you just witnessed a swarm. Here's the link to a video I posted a few months back on what you are describing. Thanks for watching.God's peace. Mr. Ed ruclips.net/video/R_2guG7Pd4A/видео.html

Got a challenge! GHOST PEPPER > can ya eat just one ? I did a fresh California Ghost pepper Matter of fact was about this time of year, was pretty orange with a pretty green stem OMG
Too bad they didn't call you before that tree got cut down... That cold night surely killed the brood. Wonder if that queen cell really is viable after all. : - ( Hope so.
Mmm, makes sense. Given they called you as soon as they realized it, they surely would've called you before if they'd known. It was just sad to hear you saying how strong and healthy the hive had been before the tree went down and then spend that cold night out without the protection of the tree around them to hold in their heat. Hope they make it after all.
The company never knew the bees were in the tree until it hit the ground. I guess it was so chilly they weren't flying so they weren't noticed. Generally, the tree companies will call me before they cut the trees so I can be present when it is felled, this one got past them. The queen never emerged, and the bees were merged with another colony a few weeks later. God's peace Carole. Mr. Ed
Oh good! So I take it that queen never emerged after all? I was thinking that with that cold night and the bees unable to keep the brood and that queen warm that all of them would've died...
It was the name given to me when I first started working at the Post Office 36 years ago. When I retired after 27 years, I liked it so much, I continued to call myself that. Then, when I started my Youttube channel, that's what I decided to call myself. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
It was a real shame that these bees did not make it. Once a tree with bees hits the ground, unless they are removed immediately, they seldom make it. God's peace Doris. Mr. Ed

Or sosig
I can promise a tour of the bee yard here at the abbey, it's on my "to do" list.I will consider you other request though. By the way, I have a sister who lives in Boston, and she watches my videos as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace Janice.
Mr. Ed
I'll second Janice's request. We need a mug shot of you from bygone days!
So so sad that nobody noticed the bees first, at least you tried to help them
I was notified the day it happened, I just could not get to them till the following morning. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
I hope the girls made it one of my hives was an RV rescue they moved the RV causing the hive to collapse. Unfortunately most of the bees parished but I managed to save the brood and a few bees. Now they are one of the strongest colonies I have.
These bees never recovered, and I wound up merging them with another hive in the bee yard. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Good Friday morning compassionate sir. It almost broke my heart to hear this. Its better to leave them alone in the wild I think. But when you have a situation such as this, you have to do what you have to do. Just hopefully all will be well once they are secure. Bless you Mr. Ed for helping the world.
Thank you for your blessing, it makes sad times easier to carry. Thanks for watching, God's peace.
Mr. Ed
the problem now with varroa mites is, wild colonies will die without help. varroa came from asia, with our shipping trade with china. apis millifera, (our honey bees), are almost defenseless against mites, and now hive beetles. they can stand off wax moths, but varroa mites bring diseases, that also affect them heavily. so man brought them here from europe, and now has brought something horrible to them as well. I keep my bees with oxcylic acid, which is a natural chemical, or organic chemical, and is 70 times as toxic to the mites as the bees.
Thank you for your constant effort to save the bees! Thanks to all the beekeepers out there! We need you!
Thank you for your kind words and your support for the effort I make to save bees.

Mr. Ed
Wow that's awesome Jeff at least you saved most of them,
Hey JP, I hope all is well my brother.
Mr. Ed
45 degrees out already? My goodness. I’m in TN and we are still in the 70s
Thanks so much Joe, the pleasure is all mine, and the Rooster feels the same way. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
good job on saving them you good beekeeper i can see you doing so good with them
I did give it a good try, but the bees had to be joined to another hive as they never recovered from this disaster.
Mr. Ed
To bad you couldn’t find the queen, glad a queen cell popped up. Great job!
It was fortunate finding the queen cell, but she never emerged and I merged the remaining bees with another hive. If you read the description of the video, you can read the entire story. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Thanks for the video and as always I appreciate it.
It's always my pleasure to share my wrangling experiences......good or not so good. God's peace Z.
Mr. Ed
I would love to see a followup on this hive. How is it going with them? Did they make it? Would be very interesting to see!
Unfortunately, there will be no follow up, the bees were merged with another colony as they were failing due to the fact their queen never emerged. That's the agony of bee keeping for you. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
The queen cell counts as a Queen, technically, Mr. Ed :D Enjoy your videos each Friday!
Technically speaking, I just prefer the ones that are running around. Thanks for watching, God's peace.

Mr.
Mr. Ed
See if you can order it from Mann Lake Bee Supplies here in the states, that's where I get it from. God's peace brother.
Mr.
Mr. Ed
I've learned so much watching you work... Thanks for taking the time to answer...

Mr. Ed
Jeff, when you cut out a hive like this, do you check the comb for hive beetle? Seem such a pity to waste good bees if the comb is infested. Stay safe
I do check the comb and will not put comb with beetles all over it in the removal box, Thanks for watching.
@@JudyHart1
He's wrangling feral bees into his box.

@@JeffHorchoff me encanta mucho las colmenas de verdad que si mi amigo no le tengo miedo ni para nada yo no me curó cuando la sacó las colmenas para contarle ni humo le ando echando saludos
I would not have assumed all the brood was dead.
And you would bee correct. It got way to cold for them to make it. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Heartbreaking:(
As true and sad as it is, it is a very big part of bee keeping. Definitely my least favorite part. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Got a challenge! GHOST PEPPER > can ya eat just one ? I did a fresh California Ghost pepper Matter of fact was about this time of year, was pretty orange with a pretty green stem OMG
was all that brood dead?
Unfortunately it was. It's not always a fun day wrangling bees. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
That tree's been on the ground longer than just last night.
It was on the ground less than 12 hours, and I got to it as soon as I possible could. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
You said knife looks like a sword
At 16 inches, it almost is a sword. Thanks for watching. God's peace Wade.
Mr. Ed
Too bad they didn't call you before that tree got cut down... That cold night surely killed the brood. Wonder if that queen cell really is viable after all. : - ( Hope so.
That early in the year bees are pretty comb-ridden. Most likely the lumberjacks didn't even know the hive was there when they axed the tree.
@@carolewarner101 Correct, the queen never emerged. God's peace.

Why do have the nickname Mr. Ed, Jeff? lol
It was the name given to me when I first started working at the Post Office 36 years ago. When I retired after 27 years, I liked it so much, I continued to call myself that. Then, when I started my Youttube channel, that's what I decided to call myself. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
How did you earn that moniker at the post office, lol ?
big bees, put the comb in your wax bend cheers buddy
That's what became of most of it, some I saved for my swarm traps. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
cool
Woooow
It's just to bad the cold got them before me. If you read the description you'll learn the whole story. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Every time I hear an american say: "It´s kaputt... " I find it so funny. Though it was a shame that hive got destroid.
It was a real shame that these bees did not make it. Once a tree with bees hits the ground, unless they are removed immediately, they seldom make it. God's peace Doris.

Ladies of Glow or the Women of Grace?
Take your pick. God's peace brother.

I've always heard that folks in Nova Scotia like the cold, especially bee keepers. Great to hear from you Dan. God's peace.
Mr. Ed

I do not catch the queen every time, but I sure wish I would. Thanks for watching. God's peace Fouad.

5 months later
Actually it was 6, but who's counting? At least I finally got around to posting it. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
isn't brude just another word for eggs?
No, eggs is the first stage of brood.
The brood is larva that emerges from the egg. Good question. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
39th!
I'm just happy you watched. God's peace Jennifer.
