Saiki shines here again. Her quality (especially Live) can now only be described as outstanding. And her unique voice color is just 🔥. There is no Holy Trinity anymore, simply 5 fully fledged master musicians who are out of this world. Love this Band so much.

They are really wordy, these lyrics. In fact, the Japanese parts of their lyrics tend to be very wordy in general. That must be very difficult, especially at the end of live shows. Don't need any extreme notes to make it difficult.

  • @nomusician4737
    @nomusician4737 3 года назад +37

I love their use of back-track. It seems like there is no stigma at all about using that in the Japanese music scene. If a performance gets better with keyboards, an extra harmony, 14 cowbells, a barking dog and a chainsaw you should use it! Specially if you don't need it to put on a great performance. I saw Band-Maid in Helsinki and their back-track interface (and Kanamis guitar) ended up in Moscow. They did an absolutely fantastic show anyways, Misa improvised a LOT to fill up the missing parts, all five sang to fill up the vocals when needed. It was a treat to see, and it was fantastic to see them do a regular set a couple of days later when they got their stuff back. They don't need a back-track but are, as most bands, better when they use it.
Oh and I love that Kanami plays the whole song doing things a lot of guitarists would use as a solo!

@@2abug She is also the Arranger, who puts all their individual parts together, tweaking the finer details and adding the finishing touches on all their songs. Afterall its often a lot of work to adapt a song esp. ones composed by others, to properly fit the band’s signature sound. Her leisure time apart from the band work and group rehearsals are pretty much spent infront of her pc doing that.
Not trying to put her her above the rest but its a fact that she is not just the brains behind their music but also their functioning as a group, from keeping track of their schedules, planning their practice/rehearsal dates, corresponding with the individual members on band activities and setting short and long term goals for the band.

Cross is from their first full length album "Just Bring It". Kanami's writing speed wasn't yet on the level it is now, so they ended up asking for help from other composers in order to finish the album on time. This is one of the results. If you want to hear what Kanami was actually writing at the time (without going outside of RUclips), you should check out "secret My lips" (MV on the official channel).
If you ever decide to step outside of what's available on RUclips, you will discover some truly magical thing, not the least of which - what Kanami's singing voice actually sounds like.

So glad you're talking more in terms of challenge and interpretation! Coming from a literary analysis background, that's what I see Band-Maid do more and more: approach the existing pop/metal/punk/thrash scene from a position of "challenge, interrogate, problematize". They're critical of convention for convention's sake, but instead of throwing out convention, they challenge its basis, interrogate its purpose, problematize its expected use, and as a result produce something that elevates convention.

And we still have the new album next month. So great.

Kanami is one of my all time favorite guitarists. Kanami is a genius songwriter, composer. Songs like Take me higher, Turn me on, Puzzle, The dragon cries all incredible songs, showing her versatility. Take me higher, she shines with a wah peddle. Kanami does some vocals here and there. Not since Nightwish in 2003, have i fell in love with a band, like i have with Band Maid. Nemophila is another band i love now, their from japan.

Definitely one of my favoritest of my 100+ favorite Band-Maid clips. I agree with you, that spot where they double-fake before coming back in is just spectacular. I also love how strong and forward Miku's rhythm line is--you can clearly hear how her confidence was growing at this point. And Kanami's non-stop lead is just insane.

  • @zer0tzer0
    @zer0tzer0 3 года назад +2

Kanami does all the backing tracks when she writes the music. Some are very subtle, but if you watch the video of the mistakes & accidents they stand out more when something breaks down. Usually it's just a synth stab or a reverse or some other effect like doubling a vocal or a chant. They can play without it, and have had to if the computer gets lost with the luggage. It doesn't really bother them. They just change up the set list. They were more worried about the sneakers they bought in L.A. It's just an enhancement to the show, like the screens & lasers. Once Akane locks into it, you can't throw her off. Sometimes see the other band members try. They will huddle around her and make faces during challenging drum parts. But it's all in good fun.

Whenever I see someone react to this song, I never get tired of the heads exploding when the first sequence key changes happen.
Kanami actually has an amazing voice. I wish she would sing more. The acoustic version of Puzzle it's just she an Saiki, where Kanami sinks Miku's background vocals.
You're not wrong, they are magical, musical geniuses!!
Yes they do use some backing tracks to keep is sounding like recorded version. But none of the super important parts. Just synth pads, electronic drums, and the like.
This song is, like you said, a masterclass in songwriting. Though it does have some "traditional" song parts (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.) its execution is nothing close to traditional. With the cascading key changes, and adding of beats give a fresh perspective on some classic "tricks". These ladies never cease to surprise. If there is one thing you can expect from them, it's the unexpected.

One of my top favourite songs for sure. What stood out to me, which I didn't notice until I heard this live version, is that Mincho shreds up some beautiful quick notes all the way through the chorus, and it's Miku providing all the volume behind the vocals. She's basically playing 2nd lead here, and it's awesome. I kinda wish the studio crew applied a little bit of compression on the drums, and overall made Mincho's guitar work easier to hear. Her melodies are legendary.

Hi Chase, I'm glad you noticed Kanami the lead guitarist backup vocals. If you want to hear her some more. You should react to the Acoustic versions of Puzzle, and Anemone. It's just Kanami on the Acoustic guitar and backup vocals, and Saiki on main vocals. Her voice is probably a little on the soft and sweet side for the type of music they want to make. She says herself that she prefers just concentrating on her guitar work, and bopping to the music. You can just tell that she is a Rock chick at heart. I like her voice. Every member of the band can sing to some degree. I'm sure that I've seen Misa singing some backup vocals. And there's videos of Akane the drummer singing with Misa dancing, and fooling around. I keep wondering if they write a song with everyone backing up Saiki, kind of like what dragonforce does. Yeah, I know they don't play the same kind of music.

This, Chase and everyone, is a sample of the caliber of character held by the five Band-Maid members: Akane Hirose (dr), Kanami Tono (gr), MISA (ba), Miku Kobato (gr), and Saiki Atsumi (vo)

“The concept, the musicianship, and the balance of each member’s personality; I think that Band-Maid is a miraculous band. - Akane
“I have become obsessed with melodies and riffs. People won’t listen anymore if the first notes are no good.” - Kanami.
“I became motivated to break out of this obstacle and push through.” - Misa
“(My) recent belief is that we could not have made it this far without these five people, and that even if one person was different, we would be a totally different band.” - Kobato
“We face the world, expanding our scope, and we will bring great music and performances.” - Saiki

I agree, I feel blessed to be alive as Band-Maid is making music! I started listening to music in the 60's, so got to hear a lot of great bands when they were new, Beatles, Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Animals, ect. The the 70's, 80's, 90's! Band-Maid is right there as one of the greats, imho! The girl groups, The Runaways, Bangles, The Donna's, Band-Maid is the best by far! Again, I appreciate your insights to music!

Another wonderful reaction and breakdown of Band Maid. I think you hit on what really draws listeners to the band, somehow they found a frequency, tuning or tone (how ever you want to describe it) in their instruments and voices that is soothing and delicate yet powerful and intense that captures your senses. Yes, they are important to the music industry.

I really like Chase's reactions because no matter how many times I've heard a song, and THINK I know it inside and out, I find myself listening differently. The prime example is Akane's off beat snare hits in the beginning of the song. Chase didn't directly comment on them but he certainly noticed them based on his facial expressions.

I just recently watched an interview with Miku and Kanami and I thought about all I've learned on your channel while watching it.. Mainly about 'Different', but other things as well. You can view it at: ruclips.net/video/nYHpt6pnaUA/видео.html
One of the things that stuck out to me was that Kanami wrote another song with specific chords to teach Miku how to play the harder parts on 'Different' that she was unfamiliar with. I was even more impressed with Kanami's thoughtfulness and goal setting.
    Love your channel - Thanks

Hey Chase you should spend sometime reacting to Woods Of Ypres, I feel you would appreciate the simple but powerful/beautiful music alongside good vocal control singing some of the best lyrical poetry out there
Only downside is that since they weren't the most famous band they didn't get any high quality live videos and only one music video.

I'm happy that you've reacted to cross. It's another song that didn't appeal to me instantly and quickly made its way into my top 20 band-maid song with its interesting chord changes and the classic band-maid beat changes and delayed entry to the chorus part.
I like this heaps better than different and afterlife, while those two songs might be technically even more complex, l don't know... just too fast paced to fully appreciate the lyrics and the details. I don't mind that kind of fast, metal-ish songs every now and then, but l do miss classic band-maid song like this.

In this video there is "Homura" which is instumental and this is their most iconic live performance on RUclips, followed by "Akatsuki no Ito" where their singer finally appears.

You really should listen to their latest livestreamed concert (which can be purchased to stream until March). You'd love seeing them play for 2 hours straight - no post-processing, just amazing live music. I'm pretty sure any attempt to do a reaction from that stream would result in an insta-block, but you should just watch it for yourself as a fan. Best money I ever spent!
    This was the setlist: www.setlist.fm/setlist/bandmaid/2020/private-venue-tokyo-japan-383bd4b.html

"What can you say about that besides 'Thank You'"... I was so curious to see how you would react and comment on this song, because this performance is one of my personal favorites. If I remember correctly, it was also the song that made me pay closer attention to the composing and structure and loving it, as it appealed to me more than what I had heard before. Maybe it was also the point at which I ultimately became addicted to these ladies. 😅 And I see it very much like you, that this band is important not only for their fans but the genre in general. The dedication they put into each song is unprecedented and there aren't many bands out there you can say that about.
And now to your comment that you haven't heard Kanami singing yet. We definitely HAVE to change that, because imo she has the voice of an angel. The best way to do that is with a small acoustic set, consisting of 2 songs ('Puzzle' and 'Anemone'), which they performed at a concert in 2018. Unfortunately, the songs are hard to find on the internet, but I could help out if you are interested. A short message on Twitter (@PhaeronX) would be sufficient.
Thanks for another great reaction to #Band-Maid ! 🤘

2nd is a song called "lady lost in time" by Labyrinth, taken from one of the best power metal album of all time (no video either sadly).
3rd song is "neverending" by Frozen crown (the only one with a official video)... all of these bands are from Italy and i'm sure u will love them
