twitchysmurfy I don’t get cold easy, so I put 1 layer under my pants, 2 to 3 layers under my jacket and a very very thin breathable face mask, and hand warmers. If I’m cold in the woods, you know it’s bad lol
Wool base layers period. Wool stays warm even when wet, so when you sweat, it won’t make you cold. Wool also naturally masks smells so it’s great for scent control
You can do exercises in your treestand to warm up somewhat: isometric muscle contractions. All the time I sit and go through every muscle group in my body and squeeze and hold, also wiggle your fingers and toes. An especially important area is your legs since leg muscle contractions help return blood to the heart. Shivering is involuntary muscle contractions to warm you, so you might as well beat them to the punch and keep from shivering by doing isometric contractions.
Keep a rolled piece of carpet foam about the size of the base of your stand with you .. not only does it quite your stand but it helps to insulate the bottoms of your feet from wind
I have used Milwaukee heated hoodie under my hunting coat. I just bought the hotronic foot warmer S4 this season and love it so far. Little bit pricey but can’t take cold feet anymore. I used to have thermacell that used the app to control them. Nothing but issues out of them.
While I don’t hunt I am a steelhead fisherman. I find that after driving to my spot I must change my socks. I take off my travel socks and dry my feet. I then change my socks and layer them as needed. Dry feet are warm feet.
Oh I forgot one other thing probably 30 years ago I used to carry an extra pair of socks and when I got to in stand I go ahead and take my boots off change my socks put my wool socks on put my boots back on and it did work but not for long one year I was changing my socks and I had one sock in my mouth holding it and one sock I pulled off I got a bare foot and here comes a buck running through the woods I shot the buck still at the sock in my mouth then I could go put my sock on for my boots on get down and take my dear home sometimes you do stuff that you don't even realize so it's done and yeah the sock was clean that's the one I was putting on good luck out there this year
Poly Pro and Merino Wool. Also - An Aran Irish Sweater medium weight - will keep you warm and toasty when everyone else is running to the truck to warm up, you're sittin' pretty. I've tested down to -10degrees and perfectly comfortable.
I research tips all time on RUclips regarding hunting and specifically keeping (my feet) warm. I always go back to this video. It is thorough and the tips are simple and true. This is the best video out there on this topic. Great job dude!
I use the usual layers, hat, mits/gloves, etc., plus I put foam on the stand platform to stand on, and I throw a couple disposable hand warmers down at my feet. Just having them close helps, or I can stand on them occasionally to really warm up. I also have a small, lap sized, thin polar fleece throw that I put over my legs when sitting which really helps keep them warm.
Great info yeah I've been I've made a set of boot covers like 20 years ago and Adolf old horse hair carpet mat and they came out with the pad with rubber on one side and the same thing I throw a hand warmer in there they cover all the whole front of my boot and it's got a rubber strap that hooks on the heel and they work great and you're right I'm 64 years old and my feet get cold I'm pretty much done too so it never goes away but yes good info and keep coming out with the information have a great day bud
Just watching your video and wish I had seen it before I bought that same hand muff with the plastic window that is useless as you said. I actually cut out the plastic and took some of my wife's fabric glue and glued the flap closed. It is so much warmer now without the plastic that was always cold.
My feet are the only thimg i cant seem to keep warm.Ive tried the battery heated insole and heated socks and boot covers. For all day sits in the mid to upper 20° temps none of this has worked for me. Now i take a cold weather sleeping bag with me,once im in the tree stand i take my boots off and i pull the sleeping bag up to my waist , i bunch up the excess of the bag around my feet and it works better than anything ive tried.I do wear 1 pair of thick wool socks as well.My feet and legs stay warm literally all day.I recommend picking a hiking type sleeping bag. One that is rated for cold temps and packs away nicely in a carry bag. Strap it to your backpack and your good to go. Dont knock it till you've tried it.Also you can always throw some hot packs down by your feet in the sleeping bag.
Those boot covers by Arctic Shield are awesome! I bought a pair of them 6 years ago and my feet have never gotten cold since. On those single digit mornings my feet have gotten a bit cool but not to point of leaving stand. I have yet to use hand warmers with these covers but I'm sure that would make them even better. Key is to put covers on as soon as you get to stand since feet are nice and toasty from walking. They will hold in all that precious warmth!! Great advice & video
I use socks that have a metal heating unit that runs throughout the sock. You can turn it off and on at the top of the sock, there’s a box that has batteries in it. These don’t get too hot and they make my feet super warm
For blind hunters or those who hunt larger stands. On really cold days ill bring a sleeping bag and kick off my boots once im setup. You can be comfortable for an entire day using one of them.
100% agree on the boot covers. If no boot cover, at least have a piece of foam or carpet remnant, or two to insulate the soles of your feet. On a recent hunt I did not have my boot covers so I had enough room to wiggle my toes for a while periodically. It either generated heat or was all in my head, either way, my toes were not cold and was able to keep sitting and waiting. Good tips on the video. Thank you and good hunting.
Insulated boot covers, but not over the boots. Take your boots off, put your feet into the boot covers, throw a hand warmer in each and your feet will stay warm.
For your cold feet try adding a vapour barrier sock between your liner sock and your insulating wool sock and boot insulation. This will keep the moisture from your foot migrating out and making your socks and boot insulation damp. For the rest of your body make sure you have a good wind blocking layer. Nothing will sap your body heat faster than the wind cutting through your layers.
Have a good hanger for your bow or gun. My bow grip sucks the heat right out of my hands. Plus it frees yours hands to stay warm in a muff. Put the phone away & stay alert especially during primetime.
Heater body suite. Can’t beat it, i have tried everything and still got cold. But the heater body suite works every time. Very comfortable on those freezing days. It’s worth the money, just a little bulky to carry it in with the rest of your stuff. But still worth it.
I've wondered about the body suits. I figured they would work, considering they're just like my boot covers but on a full body scale. How hard is it to get out of it quietly when you need to shoot?
@@InformedOutdoors I have one and it's really easy and quiet to get out of to shoot. There are straps on the inside of it that you use like suspenders. When bow hunting, when you need to stand up and shoot, just unzip it, and when you stand up the suspenders keeps it from dropping all the way down. It's out of the way but still 1/2 on you. The zipper runs all the way down to your right foot so getting into it is pretty simple. It's a little bulky to carry but folds up really tight and has carrying straps. Took me a few times to learn how to get in it while in my stand. I have a summit viper and I practiced in my backyard before I hunted with it. It will keep you warm! A large size is pretty big and has plenty of room. Hope this helps.
The disposable heat packet in your boots never worked for me. Not enough air to keep them heated I think. They might last a half hour. Best thing I have for cold hunts.... IWOM only issue with it, if it warms up to 30 degrees, it's almost too warm for it! Love it tho
Layers work.. But you have to have the right layers on.. Wear a base layer that wicks your sweat away from your body into the next layer. And you can't skimp out and buy cheap ass Walmart long jons.. Wear an outer layer that is wind proof and a hat that is goretex or windproof as well. Invest in a good boot and sock's. Boot cover's work well but at times can be cumbersome. And I load up with big handwarmers and bring a good sleeping bag or fleece blanket to keep my feet off the freezing cold metal stand..
Mickey mouse boots from a military surplus are rated at -20°. I've sat a few hours with these in 18° weather. My feet weren't warm but they weren't cold either. They're relatively inexpensive too.
@@matth2868 I have the black ones too that I wear during early season crossbow they are great boots also, you can get the white boots for under 100 bucks slightly used from the sportsman's guide. Happy hunting my friend!
I need a cushion where i can sit on a buddy stand comfortable for hours.. Ive tried numerous ways and cushions. And end up experiencing a numb butt after about an hour.. And its worse when its cold lol
use duct tape & tape some of the hand warmers inside one of your layered shirts. Put one on each kidney & at the base of your neck, couple in front pockets. With tape you can place heat where ever you need it & they work great!

Put on about 100 lbs of fat. That is how the polar bears and wales do it. I do not have that 100 lbs (I weigh 105), what does help is a piece of closed cell foam to sit on. If you sit on your heavy bibs you compress the insulation and freese. Same goes for your feet, closed cell foam inserts are great.
