In this video I am talking specifically about marine biologists in academia. The type of work in other companies or institutions might be different than what I explain here :*
Being a marine biologist is my dream job! I started wanting to be a marine biologist from watching a show called H2O Just Add Water. They were mermaids and I was really fascinated on what the ocean was hiding.
I've been seriously considering Marine Biology as a lifetime career for me. I love the ocean, and I really enjoy learning new things. My only problem is that I wonder if I'll be able to find out about something that hasn't already been researched. I know that the ocean is a big place that has hardly been explored, which is a huge help. But sometimes I also wonder if I'm creative enough to actually be able to come up with a new experiment. And what if I complete something and then find out that it's already been discovered years ago in an old scientific journal that I just didn't come across? Did you ever have these fears, and if so, how did you get over them and start discovering new things? -Faith
You should not fear not having anything to find out, since most of things are not yet known. Normally you do not have to have a brand new idea from nothing to start your research. First you will probably be given a topic by your supervisor, assuming you will do a masters and then a PhD. After that you can continue with the same research or continue with a new idea that stemmed from those studies. All scientific papers are of relatively easy access nowadays, even the old ones, and if you dive into a scientific field you will almost for sure read a big part of what has been written about your specific topic and hence rapidly find weather something is known or not. Nevertheless when you become part of a research team specialized in a specific topic they will know for sure what is known and what is not known in the field, which means you will always have guidance even if you have doubts. It does not mean you cannot have your own ideas along the way, I mean you most surely will need to, but you will always have people around you helping you, and if not you will slowly develop skills throughout your studies that will allow you to have autonomy in your research =) I hoped this helped a bit
Sea&me - Marine stuff with Maria that definitely helped, thank you! Also, one more question- what if I didn't stay in academia? Because I've heard that that really leads to being a professor, which I really don't like the idea of. I'd rather go into a private institute or something, but I'd also still want to do all parts of the process (the field work, lab work, and paper writing) without being forced into a specific one of those three. Is that possible? Sorry to ask so many questions. Thank you so, so much!
There are some possibilities to work in marine sciences outside academia, however most jobs are in fact in academia, which makes it quite competitive to work as a marine biologist in other institutions. Nevertheless it is possible.
This is my dream job! Ever since first grade when I went to the Boston aquarium and fell In love. I love the ocean and learning and discovering new things and I Love writing. This job sounds amazing for me but I’m almost 13 in middle school and I have no clue how to start. Any ideas to help???
Hi, I'm currently an 11th grader in high school. I suggest that you begin to take courses your school offers that are geared to becoming a marine biologist (once you begin high school). I had to take higher level biology during my freshman year (which was difficult, but super fun), higher level chemistry during the second year, and higher level physics during my third year. Next year I get to choose between a variety of sciences such as kinesiology, physiology, environmental science, anatomy, and etc. If you really want this to be your major for college, try to do your absolute best in all of the math, science, and even geography classes you take (as well as the other classes you'll take). Colleges will pay attention to your good grades and will begin to reach out for you to join their colleges (some are science based) and eventually you will get a job and have a degree. Also a word of advice, once you enter high school I recommend you use your time wisely and avoid procrastinating (especially if you take the higher level classes). I've learned this from plenty of personal experience- it won't be good for your gpa. It's okay to hang out and take breaks but make sure you save time for you work.
Also since you like writing, try to pay attention to proper essay structure and grammar rules you will learn in the 10th grade (most likely). It will help you write a good essay once you gather and present the research you find as a biologist.
I first wanted to be a veterinarian, but after reading about plastic pollution and declining of marine species, I wanted to help marine life from and study a way of making edible plastic, or something that can replace plastic. I just want to help the world.
Well what if I wanna study like certain parts of the ocean like the Mariana Trench? Or go in a submarine or go explore more abt sound that were heard that no body finished working on I wanna like explore and find new things.
I’m a Junior in high school, i’ve wanted to be a marine biologist my entire life. I applied to a prestigious summer program in the gulf which is 4 weeks of research and I got accepted. I can scuba dive and i’m taking an ichthyology class. However, I REALLY struggle with math.. :( I also want to study the deep ocean and it’s a very niche field mostly led by NOAA and MBARI and i’m worried about finances for college. I don’t know what to do, i’m scared I won’t make enough money to survive..
Hey, I doubt you'll see this but if so can we email back and forth or something. I'm in high school and am really really interested in marine biology and just have a lot of questions
How about deep sea biologist? I do interested in that but since the major is still not really common and people rarely wanted to majoring in that study, I am just wondering how to become one.
I want to be a marine biologist but I’m just concerned about the salary I mean I would love to do it but I also want a decent salary could u maybe help me out ?
That highly depends. In some cases the lab you work in can pay for you but in other cases you might have to bring in the money yourself. A big part of a scientists´ working in academia life is writing grant applications to get money to sustain their research. Unfortunately I think that is true for everyone and every public research institute. I hope this helped ;)
Hi Maria, I'm still working out what I want to do for a career and I was just wondering if you get much free time as a marine biologist? I really want a career that won't completely fill my life with no me time and will let me spend time with children if I ever have any. Thanks :)
Thanks for information. But I wanted be a wildlife biologist . So please help me, how to study. Now I am read in school. Am from India. So please please please.........
I have a weird random question. When you’re on your period do you still have to go to work? Like what if you don’t want to wear a tampon? Or what if your cramps really hurt? How can you go underwater and research when you don’t feel well?? It’s a weird question sorry, but I’ve always been wondering this. 🤷♀️ 😂
Hi Ivy. That is actually a great question that people are often afraid to ask. I personally suffer terrible cramps in the first day of my period, but somehow I always managed to do the work anyway, with pills and tampons haha. If you are on field work and you need to dive, usually people end up using tampons or the diva cup. It's also important to make you colleagues understand that you might not be 100% physically capable during that day. Don't be shy to tell people what is happening if you are uncomfortable. For some reason talking about having your period is a taboo, even thought it is something almost every woman has. That is a taboo that needs to be broken. I hope I answered your question :)
@@Seamemaria Yess! Definitely a taboo that needs to be broken! You pretty much replied to everything, thanks 😊. I’m just really surprised that you still have to work and dive 🤷♀️☺️
Hi Maria. I am a student considering marine biology as my current top choice for university. My main concern is whether you must have knowledge of scuba diving in order to take the courses and whether this is taught at uni. Could you enlighten me about this? Thank you.
Hi Núria. It depends on the courses, but for most courses you will probably not need to scuba dive. I didn´t need to. I attended a diving course independently from university. I also have a video on that if you want to learn a bit more: ruclips.net/video/RWFaXBqZu8I/видео.html. Hope this helped! Good luck!
Hi NIanna. I guess if you are doing GCSE exames you are from the UK (?) I am not aware of the requirements for marine biology in the UK, but generally it changes from university to university. So I would suggest you check out the requirements of where you would like to attend. I wish you all the luck
It depends. The first part of the reviewing process is done by the editor, and normally if the editor rejects it right away, most of the times you will not get any useful comments on your paper (there are some rare exceptions). If the editor doesn´t reject it, then the paper is sent to reviewers. If they reject the paper they have to state why they reject it. It really depends on the reviewer... some write a lot while others not so much, but you always get a general overview

I am starting to grow a stronger live for the ocean I have recently been learning and studying about the leatherback sea turtle
I saw this because I wanted to be a marine biologist for years and I found this and now I am leaning to be one this told me so much thank you 😊
I’ve always love ocean life and loved learning about it and I think I wanna be a marine biologist
I’m trying to get like Jotaro

Did you make it?
I badly want to be a marine biologist...your videos are inspiring me much...Thanks...
Go for it! And I am so happy to hear that, thank you :)

Thanks for the info. Subscribed! I was going to ask what specializations exist w/in the field but you put them all over the screen at the end. Cheers
=)
Have you ever met George Costanza?
Thanking you mom
I’m studying for marine biology
That’s my dream job
this video helps so much

Is there a research for marine mammals in marine biology? Love your channel!
Yes. There are a lot of research groups working with marine mammals.

I want to do marine biology as a hobby, I'm a software developer. if I run into you in the ocean I'll think I died and went to heaven.
How much do u make a year?
Very interesting but much do Marine biologists usually make a year though?
I heard from a friend that getting grants is the most annoying part of being in a research group XD

Out of curiosity, did u end up studying to become a marine biologist two years later?
hey
here is night time reading before you go to sleep, have fun.................
If we work at a university do we still have to have money ? Or university pays for research equipments and so

Yeah I'm wondering about that as well

What would I have to choose for my GCSE exams to become a marine biologist and what do I need to research?

Your GCSEs don't matter what you take, as it is compulsory to study science.
Do you get feedback for your paper of it gets rejected from a journal??
