- MY FIRST EVER WEEK OF MEDICAL SCHOOL IN THE UK!!! This is what a week in the life of a 1st year Medical student at the University of Birmingham really looks like... I have been waiting 2 years to start this course and I finally had my first full week of lectures, but how was it? Now, things are 'slightly' different this year with most of my course online and it has definitely had its challenges. But I wanted to document the entire thing and bring you all along so I hope you enjoy the vlog!

This is what a week in the life at medical school really looks like, from the highs and lows and now the added complication of everything being online! Online university definitely wasn't what I signed up for but never the less, I am so excited for medical school and everything to come. I am now officially a 1st year medical school student at the university of Birmingham and this is the first of many weekly vlogs of medical school.

I know it's a lot of work but as a 5th year medic at UoB I would just advice you to enjoy it while you can! It goes by so fast and before you know it you'll be applying for your F1 jobs
Yeah I really will, it’s all a little hard with corona but I’m just making the most out of what I can do, thanks for the advice!
I started this year too, it’s a LOT but make sure to take breaks & remember all med students are in the same situation :)

congrats on getting in!! I'm a third year medical student at university of Birmingham too and I know things are quite different this year considering corona, but Birmingham is honestly amazing! I've had the best time ever during my two years here so far and I wish you the best of luck :)

Congrats on your first week of med school! Do not worry at all about trying to find your feet about learning, that's completely normal! You will find your feet so use these first few weeks to try a few different things and what works best for you! Good Luck!

Anna welcome to University. Let's help you out here. Start pre reading your lecture content, observe and write down first what you're doing confused about. Part two you can blog on RUclips you can also use RUclips. NinjaNerdScience is an exceptional, informative and very visual learning. You also have access to Dr Najeeb and Dr Bean on you tube when you're a bit more warmed up. Also form an interactive study group. It sounds you're over complicating and no doubt this is natural. First listen, next review what you got confused about specifically and last use a more dynamic way than listening to people read of slides.

I also provide free online tutorials for undergraduate students struggling with biochemistry, neuroscience or anatomy based concepts to review. Naturally, if easier students can send their work topics over and arrange a face to face via teams.
However, I am currently doing some research on prenatal factors that can influence skeletal development and adult bone health so might be a bit slow to reply.

This is video is so nostalgic for me! I’m in my 4th year of medicine in Plymouth and you will always feel overwhelmed by the content because it’s not like a levels when you just learn the specification- you have to learn everything about everything! Just do your best and that’s all you can do! Also Armando husudungan videos are good for explaining difficult topics!!

Hey :) 3rd year med student here. Honestly, the beginning of every year feels like a lot, but after a few weeks it settles down and you find your groove. You just have to figure out the best way of learning for you, try out different things while you're early on. Don't forget that everything you're learning now will be covered again and again and again. Don't panic too much, and take time to enjoy yourself. It's important to have a work-life balance. You can do this! Welcome to medicine!

As a final year medical student (at Southampton) I can’t imagine starting the course in COVID times, it must be so different. This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen but good luck with it!

i have just graduated from birmingham medical school and am doing F1 in portsmouth! I PROMISE you everyone feels the same way. I had NO idea what i was doing and i dont think i actually found out a decent way to learn all of that information-its actually not humanly possible to though, even in 5th year. Just try and remember you only need to know 50% and if you put in half a decent effort.you always somehow just pass, often i found that id get to revision and just try and condense everything down in to the bare bare basics. eg. have 10-15 pages of notes for each module. You can makes reems and reems of notes for everything but note taking takes forever and realistically with the amount of content there is, you jsut wont ever get the chance to read over those notes when the actual key is getting the basics and being able to go over and over the content as much as possible in the most basic form. I hope this helps. Please dont feel overwhelmed, i feel like im the least academic person and i managed!
Also-use youtube videos to help you understand the concepts, they really help!

Hi! I’m an Italian student and in some time I’ll have to make a decision on what to do after school. I’d like to come to the UK and study medicine, so I was looking up things on the internet and I found many people who say that in universities there are seminar classes, where you have to discuss with other people or do group assignments.
I’m the kind of person who always stays quiet and I’d say I struggle a lot to speak/express my opinion in front of other people.
Do you have seminars in your courses? If you do, how does it work? Are there people who struggle too? What do you think about it?

Well done on starting medical school!! Right now I'm stuck on putting Hull york medical school or Birmingham on my UCAS application
For Hull York medical school the priotise people living within that area but Birmingham doesn't .You can check on their website.So in my opinion if you live within hull York area you will have higher chance getting accepted but if you don't live within the area better applying to Birmingham .However this is my opinion and at the end it is your choice Good luck on your application 👍😊😊.

I’m in 3rd year and I find everything so overwhelming this year. I don’t know if it’s because I’m in 3rd year or if it’s because it’s online (it’s probably a bit of both lol). It’s actually so hard 🤣 I think getting in a good routine is so important, get up early and get stuff done. Then make sure you are purple engaging with the lectures and not just stating at them! Hope this helps!
End of week 4 for us, fully online just now & it's hard going.
It is so hard it all being online! We can do this though, I really think we will get used to it and make the most of a bad situation 😂

Hey Anna would love to do medicine at uni I m year 12 at the moment and live locally to Birmingham and Birmingham would be my first option so would like to know the process of you getting in and what work experience I could do right now
Okay but going out so much and hanging out with so many people doesn’t exactly sound corona proof... I’m glad you’re having fun, but at those get togethers the virus can spread very easily, so I hope you’re being mindful of that. I obviously don’t know what you guys were doing and how close you guys were, I’m just a bit worried that’s all. It’s the people in their twenties that are at uni now that are spreading the virus very rapidly, so just keep that in mind. Stay safe and stay healthy!

Hi Anna ive picked Biology, Chemistry and Geography for A levels and got four grade 9's, three grade 8's and two grade 7's . Will I be able to get into medical school with these grades and subjects. Alot of people were telling me to pick maths as it would be best but I don't really like maths so would this discredit me??
Hey! Yes ofc you will be able to get in to so many medical schools with those grades and a levels there amazing. You really don’t need maths, and it honestly makes no difference taking it. In fact I would argue it adds more to take a slightly different a level. Good luck with you a levels and application!

What did you do for A levels??? Do you think Bio chem and philosophy are good A levels ???
Senior medical scientist here chemistry, biology and a form of statistical analysis is a very useful skill.

@@lilyo7328 It doesn't matter too much as long as you are competent with computer handling and the ability to perform medical statistics is being put more and more on students. Giving the fact you will be doing an intercalated component in MBChB degress (MSc In Human Anatomy in my case) you can genuinely go into the programme with any background. Some Post-Graduate students have different arts/STEMS/sporting science backgrounds to list a few so you decide what it is you want to do. UG entry - definitely chemistry and biology. Post-Grad 2:1 in any subject field with relevant background care experience.
@@charlespc8855 out school does an elective for people that want to do medicine but didn't take maths for a levels so I was thinking of doing that alongside bio chem and philosophy :). Thank you sooo much for answering my questions I really appreciate it.

I decided in my first gap year that I wanted to study medicine not biology, but it was too late to get into any universities so I had to take another year out to complete the application process properly to get into medical school exams, interviews ect.. they all start so early!
