Thanks for this! This is a topic that I always struggle to figure out what to do with. It's so much more nuanced then I'd like it to be. It does seem like the struggle is partially due to the fact that we would like things and people to be all bad or all good and it's just not the case; monsters and their art make us face the reality of a world with a lot of gray in it.

100% agree! The nuance is extensive with this topic… even making the thumbnail for this I could see my own grey areas. I guess life would be to easy if we be all good or all bad 😂

I plan to read the book, the topic is something I constantly change my opinion on. There are authors I can't get behind despite reading their work and loving at the time (looking at you JK) but what do I do when most of my reading identity has been formed by someone like Neil Gaiman who up until recently has seemed like the most peacul human being especially through his engagement with his fans but now I should know better. There are instances where I am happy to separate the art from the artist and there are some where I can't or don't even try to - sometimes it's because the art is clearly full of their worldview but sometimes it's simply based on my own biases. Sometimes it's easier to enjoy the art when the problematic artist is already dead, sometimes it's almost harder because I have no remorse for men in general and now when they're dead, I can just discount their contribution to society altogether. There is no one way to think about it in my opinion but it is an important conversation to have 👾

This is a really interesting topic! I thought about it recently with what is happening with Neil Gaiman. I have not difficulties to eradicate someone like Rowling and her art from my life. 'cause she is against my values and her books, after a more mature analysis, are full of her prejudices. Someone like Gaiman is more difficult 'cause he has some values in common with me and I have yet to found one of his works problematic. Should I stop to consume his works? This is a question that I'm asking myself since the revelation that he's not the good person that we believed he was 🤔

The nuance is hard to balance! Thanks for watching lovely! For me it’s not so much the consumption of work it’s more if I want to advertise the work on my channel. Buying problematic works second hand means the author doesn’t profit so I feel happy to do that.

Interesting discussion. I think I make the decision on a case by case basis on what I engage with, but really get frustrated when people who love the art deny bad actions by the artist despite proof. I can see separating the art from the artist being a choice that is made, but denying factual events ever having happened . . . .

Riiiiggghhht!!! Complete denial makes me wonder if it’s that they can’t accept the fallibility of the artist… has their skill with art raised them above human?… that scares the crap out of me! Oh no! New fear unlocked! 👀🤭
