Thank you for addressing this very important but little covered topic!
Like you I first started with large clamps: two 50" and two 40" parallel clamps (Bessey K-Body REVO) for a built in bookshelf project. I then added two 24". I used that collection for about 2 years before trying to decide on the optimal size clamps.
I decided that four was the minimum optimal number of clamps for a particular size. And eight would cover most clamping jobs. So rather than trying to pick a "correct size" I opted to buy four of each size: 12", 18", 24", 31", 40" and 50" (All Bessey K-Body REVO). My reasoning was four is usually the minimum number required and this allowed me to use the optimal size and if more clamps are required going up one size larger.
If I need to add any more clamps I would opt for the Dubuque Aluminum Bar Clamps in a larger size probably 72" due to the lightness of the aluminum clamp. I might also add four 24" Dubuque Aluminum Bar Clamps.
If I had to make the purchase again, I would probably buy the REVO clamps in sizes up to 31" and the Dubuque clamps in sizes above 36" due to weight.
For other tasks in the workshop I use Bessey Tradesman TG and TGJ Bar Clamps (6"x2.5", 8"x4", 12"x5.5" and 16"x7"), Irwin Quick Clamps (6", 12", 24") and two Jorgensen 10" Wooden Handscrew Clamps.

    Hello my friend,
I was using these kind of big clamps. Today I bought the new technology handcuffs. These clamps are beautiful. It is clamped like a vise from four sides in wood clamping. It does a great job especially in panel board joints. I will be making a table soon. And I'll show you these awesome cuffs too. Thank you for sharing this good information about handcuffs. See you. Greetings.

I don't see how its possible you have such few subs. You have such a great woodworking channel. I guess you would have to play those dirty trending tricks like other channels to get ahead on youtube. I have great respect for your channel. I tried for many years to keep my channel going but for the little money you get from Ad sense It was not worth it. Bravo to you Sir !!

In parallel clamps I first bought 4-24”, then 2-48”, then 2 more 24”. Then I bought the Bessey clamp extenders for the bigger glue ups. I started with pipe clamps but I have switched over to the K body Bessey clamps for everything. Thanks for you video.

I actually find the 24" clamps the most convenient. I have a few of the 48" and use them when necessary but I find them unwieldy for small clamp-ups. There are also clamp extenders that you can use to combine the smaller clamps into longer ones. They save space at the expense of being a bit cumbersome to use.

I really like the 12”. Very handy… but we have more 24 because someone told me once there was a 12” in every 24”. Hard to argue. I do have some long clamps and they are very useful when needed. I always bought my Besseys in pairs and on sale. I am blessed with a large set of clamps. No complaints

I feel like you should buy the 30” range it gives you a bit more versatile at a decent price (similar to the 24” price) or what you might use daily; its different for a person who makes 12" glue ups all day vs who does more 24" glue ups. I feel like the best bang for the buck though is the 30" range for price, size and versatility and get a few pipe clamp ends with pipe lengths (or short lengths and couplers) you would like to have on hand for the larger and small jobs since they are capable of any size until you can fill up your clamp supply. Just my $0.02

For the extremely rare occasions I need long clamps I have a six 8' long pipe clamps, and for super-long lengths I use pipe connections to joint them together. For my everyday clamping needs I use short and medium long hollow aluminium bar clamps with fitted paddings and rest. Peter Sellers uses these kind of clamps, and as he I've also fitted ash wood inside for added strength. Then there is my variety of F-clamps collected over the years (even some I got from my grand dad), wooden hand-screw clamps and C-clamps for hold down.

@@Wordsnwood Those I have are some cheap ones made in China, simply bcs they are not sold here in Norway and I couldn't afford the total cost of quality clamps like Jorgensen + shipping (neither is it necessary with expensive ones bcs I seldom use them). However, I know Mr Heisz also has made plans and videos for some pretty nice home made ones.

Call me old fashioned but I still mainly use pipe clamps, I just change out the pipe lengths to meet my needs. I do own several 6 to 24 inch F-clamps I don't care much for the squeeze clamps only own 2 of them

How do you like the Irwin ones? They are the only ones that are available to me for a more reasonable price (all of them are expensive, but for me in Mexico, the added VAT and import costs etc. REALLY make them expensive. The Irwins seem to get mixed reviews.

    • @Wordsnwood

I regard them as equivalent to the Jorgensen.

I love this clamp video series, I saw your other clamp videos. I started on my Bessey clamp collection, as they are a bit on the high price for us, so far we only have 2 - 24in Bessey parallel clamps. We decided to pull the trigger on them after having several cheaper F style clamps that just wont clamp anymore 🙄. Which brings me to my question. How can I maintain my clamps and avoid glue getting on them? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @Wordsnwood

I just scrape the glue off every now and then. Two different people have suggested waxing the bar, which is something I have yet to try, but sounds interesting.

Try painters tape on the bar.

Not directly related to size but...
I bought some Bessey parallel clamps a few years ago but I've had constant trouble with dried glue squeeze out from panels interfering with the sliding action.
What do you do to keep the bars clean of dried squeeze out? I've tried scraping, soaking in vinegar and then scraping, a couple of other things but it's still a pain.
    Any hints appreciated.

The big clamp ( clamps alsook smaller sizes) explanation looks logic but is in my opinion not completely valid. Handling such large clamps isn't comfortable (and expensive) and could trow new users of. I guess it would be more sensible to buy the smaller sizes what will be used most, IMHO and maybe a pair of pipe clamps sets that handles the bigger ( not so much used) sizes. Unless you only clamp big stuff of course.

    • @Wordsnwood

Fair point... I didn't really consider what clamps you might already own.
