Parallel Clamps - Bessey vs Well Cut vs Rutlands

- I was recently in the market for yet another set of clamps (as I'm 'Still' running out on the odd occasion) when one of those sales emails from Rutlands drops into my Inbox with a special offer on clamps. It was such a saving that I thought I'd take a chance, and tell you about it.
Not so sure I'd lay out for the market leader any more!

Great review which answered my question perfectly👍
I have some 600mm and 800mm Rutland clamps and they have failed my Axminster clamps are fantastic and let me apply a lot more pressure. The next clamps I buy will be the bessey K body. Cheep clamps are not good value for money. With 40 years of professional woodworking I have never regretted paying for quality clamps but always found cheep clamps fail if you need to apply a lot of pressure. Any body looking for parallel clamps I would recommend Axminster HD professional parallel clamps.. I do like the light weight Axminster parallel clamps for light clamping as sometimes the HD’s are bulky and heavy.
Thanks for the overview!
Clamps are one thing I won't skimp on. Bessey revos and dubuque aluminum bar clamps are my go-tos, with a bunch of bessey tradesman and lever clamps handling most of my work holding tasks. Rockler's edge banding clamps are really nice too. I tried some harbor freight f style clamps, and they are ok, but I've had handles come off and bars bent, so they're no longer in my clamp rotation.
Good clamps are definitely not inexpensive, but you don't need to run out and buy an entire collection at once. I usually wait for sales and grab a couple at a time. Skip things like takeout, fancy coffee and the like and the clamp funds and collection can accumulate fairly quickly. Over the course of this year, I'll be filling out my collection with about 18 more revos and dubuques and I should be set for the remainder of my woodworking life.
Edit to add: Bessey clamps have a lifetime warranty.
Hi NW, good points all. I've tried cheap clamps in the past and had them snap in my hands, not a good when the glue is drying. Nice to know Bessey also have lifetime cover. 👍
Great information! I always say my best friends are my besseys... they help me "hold it all together" when life is crazy 🤣
🤣🤣😂👍
My biggest problem with the Wellcut and Rutlands is that they're not parallel. So _technically_ they're not parallel clamps. You can see how bent they are in this video as well (5:27) with a gap getting larger and larger towards the back side of the jaws. It's like this on every clamp i've seen. Some have been even more bent.
I also tried Dewalt clamps. They're better overall and very close to being parallel. I also like how they have a smooth shaft (lol don't know what else to call it) so when you get glue on them it's easier to clean off. But they're more expensive and have very few size options with little to no accessories. The price isn't that far off from the superior Bessey clamps either, so you may as well just get the Bessey's...
And that's what i did after returning all these other clamps. Really tried to avoid Bessey because of the high price, but they are the best quality and the most parallel.
I picked up bunch of Bora and Jorgensen parallel clamps when on sale … all of them provide good pressure and usability to make them valuable in the shop … Bessey’s are great but so pricey … great comparison reporting, thanks!
Hi Marino, not tried Bore and Jorgensen yet, may be a locationary thing. 👍
Thanks for the video I’ve got 4 Wellcut clamps and find them excellent. For the money I don’t think you can go wrong. The Bessey aren’t twice as good!
HI WMP, they're not bad ata all are they? 👍
Just when you think Bessey's are expensive, take a look a Jet clamps. Torquata is apparently made by Jet and supposedly less expensive but I don't see them here in the US.
I have besseys the latest Rutlands versions and their predecessors the Dakota clamps ( which I have been using for almost 20 years). Of course the Besseys are better finished and a more elegant clamp however the Rutlands versions have never let me down they clamp just as efficiently and at those prices it means you can spend the extra on some other tooling where the additional price really does make the difference
Couldn't agree more. 👍
NOOICE!
Great to Know. I am sure there is a bit of yorkshire in you when it comes to spending
Hiya Paul, that's the 'Cornishman' in me, perhaps there's a long lost relationship there somewhere. 👍
Hi great review. I know I’m late to the party! Would you be able to tell me if the jaws are parallel and true, and even pressure at the top and bottom or if anyone else can answer it. Thanks in advance.
Hi Liam, thank you. I'll take a look and let you know. 👍
Any experience of the Axminster clamps?
Hi Allthegear, Yes I have two 300mm Parallel clamps from Axminster and they're not bad at all. I really like Axminsters One Handed Bar Clamps. 👍
Bought a Wellcut clamp to try out after watching this. No complaints so far compared to my Bessey clamps. I have a job to make a few items I need to clamp at 54 inches (1370mm). Most of my parallel clamps are 1000mm or 600mm. So the BESSEY KBX20 Clamp Extension working with the Wellcut is ideal. One question I have is like most people I have an assortment of parallel clamps including The Axminster parallel clamps however I have found they do not fit the Bessey extension KBX20 I am very surprised they have not got a version for their clamps. So does anyone know if Axminster clamps plan to market one or is there an aftermarket extension bracket that can be used for the Axminster clamps. If not I will have to buy more clamps on the basis I can use extension brackets I certainly do not want to be purchasing too many 1500mm and longer clamps. The ability to extend is a big selling point for me makes your parallel clamp collection easier to store; more flexible and less weight to manoeuvre around a glue up. The main alternative I use for that reason are Bessey pipe clamps. So if anybody knows the best way to extend Axminster parallel clamps I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.
Hi Kenny, I don't have any Axminster clamps to try, so, is the profile similar?
@@GTWoodshop Hi yes very similar I did try the Bessey clamp extension on one. It goes on so far but you can not get it as far as the bolts holes aligning without binding to the extent it jams and takes some force to remove. Certainly on the one I tried. Maybe you could possible look at fetling it in some manner to get it to for all it may require is opening the jaws up slightly. I haven’t explored that route yet before bottoming out what other solutions are available. I have thought of buying some parallel clamps in the 300 to 450mm range of which Axminster do two 300mm variations one with a 95mm jaw and one with a 80mm jaw which may compete with the Bessey uniklamp. However not decided on which way to proceed until I resolve clamping in the 1300mm range without buying new 1500mm clamps. I would prefer to use my current clamps with extensions and buy clamps from the various manufactures when offers are on rather than buy for a task. I think compatibility is a key consideration. Keep up good videos from 30 miles from Lands end they are well enjoyed 30 miles from John OGroats.
@@TheClashen Hi Kenny, would it be possible to drill a new bolt hole? Hope you can sort aa solution as you say the long clamps are an absolute pain to store. Thanks for the kind words. 😁😎👍
@@GTWoodshop Hi just watched your video again as I checked the Rutlands clamps out and they do a 300mm version you highlighted the Rutlands and Wellcut heads are exactly the same but you didn’t try out the Bessey extender on the Rutlands clamp as it didn’t have a hole drilled. Do the Rutlands and Wellcut clamp bars have the same profile so I know that the Rutlands will fit the extender as well. So I can consider if it is worth drilling holes in those once the warranty is up. These sort of videos are really handy for people like me in a remote area as we can’t just pop into a local shop to see products for ourselves. These days a lot of deals are not worthwhile for us based on postage so if you are buying products you want to know you are getting something that fits your needs. I have even had to drive 5 hours south to Perth to collect products as that is as far North some companies will not deliver or try charging £99 postage on a £20 item. So your videos are often so important from that point of view. Thanks Kenny
Bought some of the cutwell ones recently
Hi Sam, What did you think? Not too shabby?
@@GTWoodshop yeah I think they are good, I couldn't find much online about them before I got some, compared to the bessey kwikclamp they are good. It's the 20% discount still available or was that just to you? Otherwise is say the wellcut are better price
@@samrix5793 Hi Sam, no I think the discount period has ended, but another will be along of that I';m certain, when it does I pop post up. 👍
Well, sadly at Amazon in Germany the Wellcut clamps are almost as pricey as the clamps from Bessey 🤐 but thanks very much for the comparison 👏
Hi Anja, Sorry to hear that. 😢😢
Do Rutlands sell 'pegs', you could get a cheap friend for your other peg.
OK, give me a min on that one.........
Iam not listening I've just bought s 721
