That was an interesting exploration! Black isn’t a color I naturally gravitate towards 😅, but I do have several tubes; my favorite being the pbk11. I have the DS lunar black( cooler) and the VG oxide black (warmer). In my experience, they granulate in a more satisfying way if you apply them onto a prewet surface. Also have Cotman Lamp black Pbk 6 and M Graham Ivory Black.
Enjoyed your Zorn palette portrait! Definitely added to my To Do list! I’ve also seen fascinating paintings of fuzzy black cats done with a particular black pigment (needs to be a specific pigment and brand…Will look that up for you.)
Something nerdy you might find interesting is that Lukas brand neutral tint contains no black in the formula (PY153, PV19,PB15:1,PG7)!

I have seen the fuzzy cats too! I think it’s doable with carbon black. Bizarre, my Lukas neutral tint has black in it! PY155,Pv19, Pb15:1, Pg7, Pbk7. Mine is a tube, is yours a pan? The lunar Black by DS must be amazing…. Sooner or later….
Thank you for sharing your experience!

Good morning Elisabetta! A perfect video for a chilly morning with plenty of tea! Ahhh....holbein Peach Black oil paint I used in a very limited palette-in place of a blue. I didn't know they made a Peach Black watercolor, I will look for it! You may have guessed I have never used an ivory/bone black even in mixes;-) I've used Mars Black in oil, but now I see I must try it in watercolor! I appreciate your thorough explorations!xoxo

@@WatercolorElisabetta Indeed, it was so much fun. Now I want to try it with different colours from different brands -thanks to you ! By the way, are you going to Fabriano in Acquarello? I am missing it this year, as I have a trip to Italy later in May. I would love to see what you get up to if you go there.

I love RS Aquarius black in all kinds of mixes. Like you I do not reject blacks, they have a lot of use for value studies as well as in darkening other colours. It depends on how you use them. My least favourites are those unmoving lamp blacks. The vine backs and Mars blacks are interesting and a whole other area of exploration.

Hello Lindy! True, the Vine Blacks I suspect would be great for Monochromatic value studies! I also love soluble graphite for that. Endless possibilities, and so little time! Thanks for your kind comment, as usual.

to explore the palette of anders zorn can be very interessting, also if we dont use today the toxic flake white any more because of the lead in it ... I was also experimenting with the different black´s that I own , vermillion have different names per each brand and the light ochre is also not the same and have a big range from brand to brand... I have found also very useful color combinations - for example lemon yellow + neutral black > spring green. autumlike the mixing result will be with a yellow that´s a bit reddish...
there is much more possible, if I use ultramarin anstead ivory black what I like and so on :)
the realy crazy ironoxide black also called marsblack (PBlk 11) is also very interessing for colormixing because the high granulation effekt of these pigments. I need not a big palette with each color worldwide.
just few color´s are enough and I can have a lot of fun ... 😃

I use granulating blacks a lot, especially for greens recently. My new favourite is Mijello Cobalt Black, along with Mars Black and Della Magna Magnetite. Thanks for the comparison!

Hi Elisabetta Can I recommend a mix of lemon yellow and ivory black for some lovely natural greens ? I find the browner Pbk 8s are great for line and wash monochrome landscape studies, although not very lightfast, and even the Pbk 6s are very useful for mark making exercises when exploring a new brush. So even if one avoids them in a usual palette- which requires a light touch- they can be handy. I am delighted to see you back, many thanks.

Awesome comparison as always. The Br11 on the Paul Rubens tube is definitely a printing error because PBr11 is a very light brown (for example lunar brown or Aquarius brown). In the older lines of Paul Rubens they often had mistakes like that, they've gotten better over time. Sadly here in Germany I can only access older sets of them and not buy single pans or tubes. Where do you buy you're single tubes from? Greetings and wish you a wonderful day ❤

Hello my friend! I have bought single pans on Ali Express, but this black was part of a set. Sometime they make new sets with different colours.

I actually use white watercolour (not gouache), and it makes some interesting mixes with a Zorn type palette. Instead of black I use Shmincke Payne's grey, which is more grey and less blue than some other Payne's greys (it's PR101, Pb26, and PBk7). It darkens to almost black, and I find it's a little easier to mix with than an actual black. :)

I agree! It’s very interesting to experiment and decide what you like and what works for you!! I very rarely use white in mixes (only highlights) but I do not like dogmatism so I might experiment more with it 😁. Thank you!
