Birth and Foundation: Venice was officially founded on March 25, 421 AD, according to tradition. The first populations sought refuge on the lagoon's islands to escape barbarian invasions, especially from the Goths and the Huns.
The Republic of Venice: Venice was an independent maritime and commercial power for more than
1,000 years. The "Serenissima Republic of Venice" was one of the major Mediterranean powers, renowned for its vast trading empire and diplomacy.
St. Mark's Campanile: The bell tower of St. Mark's Square, standing at 98.6 meters, is one of Venice’s most iconic landmarks. Originally built in the 9th century, it collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt "as it was, where it was" in 1912.
The Gondolas: Gondolas, used for centuries as the main means of transportation, are now symbols of Venice's romantic charm. Today, they are primarily tourist attractions, and each gondola is handcrafted with precision, composed of 280 pieces from eight different types of wood.
Rialto Bridge: Built between 1588 and 1591, the Rialto Bridge is one of the four bridges that span the Grand Canal and is the oldest and most iconic. It was once the only way to cross the Grand Canal on foot.
The Venice Carnival: The famous Venice Carnival has ancient origins dating back to 1162, when it celebrated a victory over the Patriarch of Aquileia. The elaborate Venetian masks, a tradition of the Carnival, are renowned worldwide.
Doge’s Palace: The Doge's Palace, located in St. Mark's Square, was the residence of the Doge and the center of political power in the Republic of Venice. The building is a splendid example of Venetian Gothic architecture.
Marciana Library: One of the most important libraries in Italy and the world, the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana was founded in 1468. It holds a vast collection of Greek and Latin manuscripts, including ancient codices.
High Water (Acqua Alta): Venice is prone to the phenomenon of “Acqua Alta,” which occurs when the tide rises, flooding parts of the city, particularly St. Mark's Square. The phenomenon is more common in autumn and winter.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: In 1987, Venice and its lagoon were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their historical, artistic, and architectural significance, as well as the uniqueness of their ecosystem.

Venise n'est ni la plus belle ville du monde, ni la plus romantique. Des endroits plus charmants en europe et dans le monde, il y en a. Pour ma part, je trouve que la ville paraît un peu désuète et mérite d'être mieux entretenue.
