the S and even the A rank hunters defeat plenty of opponents.... just not bosses.
Cha and the chinese guy (i forgot his name) as well as other S tier characters defeated a lot of enemies in the final battle just not as many as the mc and for good reason.
Also Andre even is able to hold his own against a monarch in a 1 on 1 fight.
Clearly they are not as important as they were until Jeju Island arc but to call them useless is completely ridicolous

The main problem with solo leveling, regarding the points that you made, can be boiled into one choice that the author made. The strength of the awakened is set once they awaken, and they can only be stronger if they go through a double awakening. It's so at one point or another, Jin Woo is just gonna clap everyone's checks and no one will ever be able to help him.

    • @lemondropped8426
      @lemondropped8426 3 года назад +256

Yeah, I really agree with your second point. All we see is him getting stronger and stronger which is okay but kinda disappointing when no other human can match him and it’s very hard to root for other characters knowing it’ll only be sun jin woo. It was very entertaining at the start and beginning of the middle when he was training and becoming stronger because we wouldn’t know if he’d actually do it and he was relatable. Now, he’s barely recognizable from the guy he was, maybe a year ago if not that.

Solo levelling was at its best for me whenever he was doing his first dungeon and fighting the big bad snake. Sung Drip Woo was struggling at that point and wasn't the overpowered god of destruction that wipes out absolutely everything with no challenge. It's still one of my favorite webtoons ever created but its boring. Big Daddy Sung doesn't struggle with anything, emotionally or physically. The hype it can create is unparalleled but it lacks so much in story. If they just made him struggle in this next arc against these guys and actually face death then it would add a much needed spice to the way it's currently going. The next part is spoilers for the last 5 or so chapters so don't read if you aren't caught up. I was hoping Sung would find a unique way to work around his daggers not being to effective against the ice monarch. But Thomas literally just shows up, says what's good, and gives him some super god weapon. Like what the hell.

Solo Leveling is a power fantasy so it was flawed from the start tbh XD but it does okay in its premise. Definitely not for me since I finished the light novel and side stories and I did not care much of it.
I had two more issues with it. One is that Jinwoo is a bland OP protagonist. Unlike Saitama and Mob with their mental or physical flaws, jinwoo is a perfect man. Jinwoo himself noted that he was becoming too distant and unemotional but there was no negative reprecussions from it. It gives the author the excuse to make him a cool calm MC while letting him keep on the doting son and sibling trait just for appeal.
Another issue is the lack of worldbuilding. It can be debated but I am talking about the Rulers' and Monarchs' side. I felt that so much more could be done with their pasts to give us insight on why the Shadow Monarch is the strongest? Also, what are the worlds Rulers and Monarchs lived in like? We saw what the demons' world is like. What about the other monsters?
Also unpopular opinion but most of the women are there to just to be 'waifu'ed. The only development the S ranker girl got was becoming jinwoo's love interest. Yes, I don't remember her name because her relevance in SL's plot is that minor.

Instead the Rulers get slapped into the final battle to remind readers that they are still trying to help Earth and that was it for them. It's legitimately bad writing.

The winding pillar method! (The Protag is the central pillar and all other plotlines and POV's wrap around them to join up into one more solid story)
A method primarily used when the Protag is waaay to strong for any actual decent conflict, it involves using other weaker charcters to fill time, build the world and make a nice mostly self contained small story while we wait for it to tie back into the main plot.

Sun Jin-Woo is bland with enough good traits to make him seem like a good person. Might as well be one of those Male Reader stories seen in on Wattpad. Waited for the A-rank Team in high roc dungeon to be at death's door to come out, doesn't help his sister with her PTSD, doesn't revive the monsters in Ice Elf, Lizard man and other dungeons. Yes, one may argue he didn't do that because he wasn't able to revive the boss monster as they would serve as out on the field commander but he had ignored tactical advantage by not reviving the mooks and the boss.
There's also how every S-rank Hunters seems like a big deal but are just how Cersei Lannister to Jaime when they're alone in that tower. Also lack of utilisation of characters, racial undertone and flat-ass characters unable to shine. One Punch Man, a manga that follows an overpowered character, was able to show us why they are S-rank. This one just shows us by showing Jin-Woo giving them a run for their money while lower ranked ones are dirt and this only applies to a handful of person. Literally the highest ranked Manhwa of all time and in the Top 50 of all Manga of all time on MAL. So at that point comparisons of the story and fleshed out characters are just going to happen. If it was not ranked as high and the fans didn't say stuff like "If they adapt it well it will be the best anime of the decade" under the anime announcement video nobody would mind. Just hyping this up way too much. I get it is cool to some people but the story is just meh and the characters are bland and never developed.

I could not agree with this video more; I just want to preface by saying that I really enjoy the webtoon, so this isn’t really coming from a “haters” side
My main problem with solo leveling is as you said: the fans that praise it to the heaven. It saddens me to actually see people be like “if solo leveling was animated it would be better than one piece or **insert any other big name anime**” (believe it or not I’ve seen countless people say this)
When it comes down to it solo leveling is just a normal power fantasy with nothing new to offer, it got carried by the art. If any story’s art style was as good as solo leveling of course it would gain traction
Again, I do really enjoy reading the webtoon as it was even one of my first webtoons, but i would have to say that it is overrated, according to those who think it’s better than most masterpiece anime/manga. Those are my thoughts regarding the fan base around it. I don’t even want to get into the actual narrative of the story

Now it's more like "A powerful enemy? Shadow army, go!" A few chapter later, enemies are dead.
You can't feel the intense situations when the MC is too OP. Cause you just know he's just gonna destroy the enemies without even breaking a sweat.

I think one of the biggest mistakes was giving him Shadow Exchange. OPM works because Saitama can't be everywhere at once and so other characters have to hold it down until he arrives which results in their character and strength being explored. And when Saitama shows up he gives a lot of respect to the ones who were fighting because he knows being a hero isn't easy. On the other hand, in SL even if characters were fighting before Jin Woo the get utterly destroyed and disrespected until he shows up, wins the fight and remains too cool to acknowledge anyone else's effort (because they got beat too quickly to display any effort). His character arc should've been similar to Shinichi from Parasyte, but they did NOTHING to explore his loss of emotions. So much so that despite being standoffish and socially awkward, it has absolutely no negative impact on his relationships. I loved this series, I hyped this series... but now I'm just along for thee ride.

Ok so you remember how a lot of people die to allow Sung Jin-Woo to beat everyone's ass? Well once he beats everyone's ass an angel comes to him and is like: what do you want; and he's like: I want to go back in time to save everyone... It got me so mad it made me feel like all the sacrifices were for nothing. This is when the novel turned from a ok power Trip novel to a shitty shounen where the MC faces no challenges and saves everyone despite his decisions being extremely risky because he has plot armor.
Even the angel was like: you know if you fail we're all fucked right? And he's like: I won't fail... Man I'm just sad now if only more thought was put into this. A pity such a nice art was wasted on such a poor story

Like imagine if mid way through beating Thomas Andre, he had something black mailish or the fact that if he established himself as stronger than TA there would be issues. Imagine if at that moment he stopped punching and backed off and ran away and there was the inner turmoil of Thomas knowing Jinwoo could beat his ass, but not anyone else. Imagine if he had a fight with Jinho just before he saves him? I think the action and power building is amazingly good, the art and the fact that Jinwoo is so strong and he DESERVES IT is great, but Solo Levelling's characters are 1 or maybe 2 dimensional at best...

I agree with ur first point but let’s b real it’s something that happens with everything on the genre but I like solo bc is rlly complete
And about second and 3rd I just personally like this I’m always reading this type of work simply for the main character if it was actually slice of life related I would care for the other characters or their strengths but I rlly don’t 💀
So I guest u point totally and if this becomes a manga the thugs that u have said would become a bigger deal in my eyes

The Only problem i had with solo leveling is sung's character development. I like his awkward and determined personality but his personality changed completely after the serpent fight. He became the typical badass mc everyone want. I'd like to see him slowly progress to the current self in at least 200 chapters. Sure watching a whiny loser turn into a badass is boring but there has to be something you can relate to. the MC often solve problems with murder and threats. It focus too much on him, Side characters barely get any time to shine. I'm afraid it will go down in history as a regular anime(if it ever get adaption). The Artstyle and fights are amazing nonetheless

What u described at 3:25 have an actual Trope with a Name.
    Its "The Worf Effect"
When in a story, a strong character is introduced and hyped, just to be defeated by a more important character. To show that this protagonist/antagonist is "truly, very strong guys!!" for the readers/watchers.
"This guy is very strong. If hes defeated, that means whoever did it must be a monster!"
    - Jogo from Jujutsu Kaisen.
    - Chad from Bleach
    - Many from Marvel/DC
    Etc, etc.
    They are strawman-punchbags.
One of my most hated tropes too personally.

The premise of a story where most characters aside from the MC can't really get any stronger is absolutely terrible for a serialized story with multiple arcs. Because a power fantasy relies on power creep to continue upping the stakes it guarantees that all of the other characters will become irrelevant the arc after they're introduced. Really the only plot you can tell with those limitations is "MC meets something stronger than him, MC trains and levels up, MC claps powerful thing's cheeks" over and over again. I don't think it's a failure of storytelling so much as a limitation of the premise.

Yeah, i got into the series recently, and rushed to latest chapter in about 3 days of constant reading in my free time.
I must say, it is the classic, overdone, predictable shonen structure: main guy is weak -> trauma -> motivation to get strong -> becomes the most powerfull -> wins.
Another thing that i don't like is how there's no balance in the structure, you never have a fixed number of pages, some are painful to read because it has lots and lots and lots of dialogue, others are just 7 pages of Jin Woo being god tier just 'cause he's the chosen one... i wished his power was truly his and not from the original monarch.
And finally, i hate how almost every person we see, simply disappears, showing about 2 or 3 times in a random panel, what happened to the rank B healer who retired?
Why did Jin Woo simply forgot her fucking existence and never went on the dinner they promised to have?
    It saddens me a lot...
I really like solo leveling though

Agree 👍, I've read the novels when it's just in 50+ in the Manhwa, and yeah, I'm not worried if a villain is powerful bcoz Jin Woo will beat em', also the side characters that we know that suddenly appear and disappear (like what the hell?). First I thought it was a Harem but not really, and some 13 year olds jerks(just an expression) compared Solo to Omniscient Readers Viewpoint. Sh*t! that novel is a masterpiece that still gives me chills and make me cry.

It's really sad to see ORV being compared to Solo Leveling when Dokja and Junghyuk has more character than Jinwoo. It just happened that SL was the first one to get adapted. They have the same art studio so i'm pretty confident in the long run people would like ORV more.

Needs to focus more on side characters and continue to make them relevant throughout the story, and actually have someone give Jin a run for his money or at least put up a decent fight. Jin gets a little too cocky at times so it would be refreshing for someone to bring him back down to earth, whether it be a verbal conflict with comrades or a physical one with enemies.
But besides that this series a BANGER

@@zsk7531 im saying bro 😭 i miss the old Jin Woo that was learning to use his powers. Back then he was strong but wasnt walkin over ever poor mf he ran into and talkin to them crazy lmao. He actually had strategies and at that point in the story, side characters had some relevancy and development. Dont get me wrong, I love the OP Dripp WOO but its been too long since anyone put up a real fight so that OP dynamic is getting a tad bit stale. And as a direct consequence to his OPness, buddy doesnt really need anyone else for anything so that directly leads to the side character's lack of development.
