Technics SL-1210MK2 vs SL-1210MK7 - Which turntable is the best & what's the difference?

- When it comes to turntables, one name has always stood out above the rest, so when Technics announced the brand new SL-1210MK7 earlier this year, everyone wondered the same thing - How does it compare to the legendary, 'Club Standard' SL-1210MK2!?
Ratzi's joined by turntable nerd & scratch extraordinaire Jimi Needles in The Ratcave to compare the two decks, putting the MK7 through it's paces with some hard cuts and scratching!

I’ve got 38 years on a pair mark 2. Made back in 1982. Still going strong
me too with mine going on 30 years and I've had them out at countless outdoor parties, festivals and squat raves and all that's broken in all that time is 1 deck que light led needs replacing. Absolutely the best purchase I ever made.
Replete Replete that’s about right. These things last forever
I have 27 years on my pair of 1200MK2's.
djbhe nice!!!! Those Mk2’s are the working horse
always nice to hear an OG pair still going strong!
the team that led this tt project in the past were really in love of what they created. I’m 44 y and still dream to have a pair of this.
I don't think back in the 70s Technics would realize they have created the most legendary iconic turntable.
For the home to the clubs basic over engineered.
This has been the footprint for all other decks cdj's midi controllers for years after.
There is only 1 turntable :D
Exactly. It was a "happy accident" which made them a lot of money. However, because it was a near perfect product, there was no need for people to buy anything new from them providing their originals still work. So business wise, it wasn't the best model but for the consumer it was great.
They did, since développement of this turntable costed >1 million US$ (seventies value of this currency)
Facts!!
What was also proven here was the 30+ year old MK2 can easily keep up and match the performance of a fresh out the box MK7. The hinge holders on the MK2 are also removable with 2 small screws to achieve the flush look to the mixer!
Yep. When these MK7s came out I assumed they’d essentially end the used MK2 market. But, no, in many ways MK2s are still the ones to own.
I used to snap up any beat up examples I saw going cheap and strip them down, re-grease and oil them, replace any worn parts and they’d be as good as factory fresh again. Don’t make much money going this-just love these decks so much it’s fun to give them a whole new life, especially with the rise of DVS giving them a whole new purpose

@@nedim_guitar keep in mind. This channel is to promote products that they sell, and they only sell the new one. Kind of a conflict of interest there most channels that are just reviewing them say the same thing. The old one is the OG and built like a tank. The new one is cheap.
The amount of times ive accident,y knocked the on off knob on the sl1200s, lol i waslucky enough to own, unbox a brand new pair factory fresh in my life, and mixed on them for 30 years. 1 of the other reasons us OGs dont want a new pair, is because we know they have been battle tested, and longevity. Part of the success of the technics turntables, was the fact they made them TOO GOOD. So good, they never broke, and only needed minor service. Unfortunatey. In 2010. Tue CDJ took over sales, and slowly killed off technics turntables. It sucks Technics decided to release the mk7 instead of making og decks!
P.s. 17:09 good djs dont share needles
I own both and they are both great....i have retired my mk2's for now due to parts getting harder to find ....but w the technics you will always be getting a quality product its all i have used for 27 years
I bought my pair of 1200MK2's 27 years ago 1993 and they still look and play like new and I have never had a problem or had them serviced. I paid $750 for the pair.
Even electronic Componsbts on the board can be replaced with generic parts are long as the specs match. Apart from the motor control IC chip that is but it's rare for them to let go
Your RCA cables will go before the rest of the M2. They’re tanks
My 50th coming up in a few months, a pair of these MK7’s are on my wish list.
I hope you get them!
MK7 all the way ...
Dont even bother mate you'd be better off getting a good condition mk5 for even cheaper. The mk7 weighs 6 pounds less and the quality is no where close to th cold ones. If your going to buy new get a GR2 or even better the G. Thats much better than a mk5. Or just wait for the G2 in 2025.

I've had my 1210's mk2 since 1999. I have taken to the USA from the UK twice, and they haven't skipped a beat. I am curious about the MK7s, but I have heard they have some issues with isolation if I do any DJ work. I love my mk2's 😍
The mk7 can play at 78 and reverse play by setting the switches under the platter. You can also adjust the brake and torque the same way
michael dent For real? Damn, when I worked in sales I had to know every single thing about the product I was selling. Man, I could have told you every single feature on every home appliance in that store without batting an eyelash.
michael dent not to mention, the fact that reverse play, 78 RPM speed, torque/break control, and light color change are all adjustable with the dip switches right under the platter was one of their biggest advertising points at CES 2019. How could someone sell these and not know that haha?
@@mongojoe21 … so at this point I can stop watchin this guys ;)
@michael dent we did, but we omitted that info as 78rpm is not a standard format in today's club environment, nor is 78rpm a go-to pressed format for vinyl and dubplates (for clubland at least) in the 21st century ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@@IceColdRydah Hello . 1200 => Grey 1210 => black 😉
Just sold my MK2s. 20 years of abuse and still worked a treat they just looked a little bashed up and needed a service. I have purchased the MK7s and not regretting it. FYI - The target pops up and pushes down on the MK7. I think its a cool feature and definitely not a monstrosity if you push it down. The only thing I wish it had was a green light at centre / middle pitch. The MK2s pitch was green when it was at a neutral pitch. The build quality on the MK7 is beautiful and the all black tone arm and shell looks so sexy. Great video just wanted to note the target light pushes in. Happy mixing!

Thanks for the video. The weight difference is 70's tech vs 2019 tech. It says on the Technics product page that there is a mixture of composite materials in the deck that actually makes it more vibration proof even though its lighter. The pop-up light. I wonder if its on a rubber base so that it does not snap off if knocked hard ? Hence the wobble ? The light on the 1210 Mk2 always looked a bit out of place to me, I prefer the new one.
the MK2 target light is a joke......and has made me enough money.
I mix and scratch on a pair of MK3. I am currently trying to decide between buying a GR for listening or going big and getting a G
I just recently had my 1210s serviced. Still going strong
Good man!
If they make it cheap and they constantly break down people will buy more so they'll do better business it's all about capitalism and business and money it has nothing to do with quality anymore.
Do you have any issues with feedback/resonance on the mk7?
None seems to deal with this aspect which is the very important I’d say.
It would be great to have some side by side test with gain levels and so on.
I’d love to get Mk7 but still not sure as reviews are a bit discordants yet.
Mk7 bass response is not as good as MK2. Someone on RUclips made resonance comparisons.
Thanks! I have actually seen something about it and decided not to buy it. Still waiting.... Other options way too expensive.
Watching the Video on a MK2 platter was almost exactly the same as watching it on a mk 7 platter. Ensuring not having to turn phone round and round during video. Haha. 😆

MK7 Iis great turntable ...i have pair 1200 MK7
I have 2 mk7 and definitely not satisfied with digital pitch control. I'll sold them and buy mk5
What's the difference on the inside to make it much lighter than the M K2
Of course the newer one is going to be cheaply made they want to stay in business and keep selling turntables if they make them as good as the MK2 they'll go out of business again because they don't break and they won't sell any.
I have both. I also have the Rev7. Love them all. I had my RCA and ground wire replaced on my MK2’s and my wife took apart my tonearm Base and cleaned it up and greased it. Good thing there’s a guy in my area that can fix just about anything on the original 1200’s. As for my MK7’s, I just wanted new ones. If you have the money buy what you want.

Got a pair of 1210’s and considered buying the mk7’s and they feel like the 1210’s but the build quality and electronics are not in the same level as the 1210’s . I have had them 20 years and I have no doubt I’ll have them forever . The old story about parts getting rare is mute as there are refurb shops in the states making parts if needed , mine have never been serviced and feel like they did as new . They do not make electronic items to last anymore and the best electronics are made in Japan . The mk7 made in malaysia. Nuff said

I have recently upgraded from the mk3d to the mk7. Although i do still prefer the pop up light from the mk3d, one thing worth mentioning is that the mk7 uses LED, so im guessing they will last longer? And they are slightly brighter i think.
U made the biggest error by getting mk 7.I guess u love ur l.e.d.light.cheeply made and a lighter turntable.
What’s the consensus on the MK1? I found one for $475, not sure what to get
Same story - I owned a pair of MK2s in the 90s, had kids sold them kicking myself. Eventually replaced them with the PLX1000- it took me a while to get used to the higher torque and digital pitch but now I'm good with them - I don't need to spend $2k on a new pair of MK7s.
PLX-1000s are incredible turntables!
mixed on plx1000 they are performance drops & scratching turntables !!! if you compare your mixing to your mk2s, I bet your mixing is lot tighter on them and longer transitions , your never going to get MK2 pitch performance from pioneers , it's digital step sequence pitch !!! designed for dvs not real vinyl
@@FSwiftDJ I've never tested them side by side. But I'm sure you are correct. I've been able to mix just fine on vinyl with the plx1000s - don't really notice it. All new turntables from now on will have digital pitch faders - even the new Technics MK7s have a digital pitch fader. it's something I've just accepted.
@@Ziggy_v2 the technics Mk7 slider is unique , it's A/D pitch !!! digital controller PCB and Analog fader slider, it's not the same , pioneers plx are handpin motors, exact same turntable as reloops & denons

Slight correct, the Mk7 can be switched to enable 78rpm using the dip switches under the platter. Then you can press both 45 and 33 buttons to get 78.
But For what...????..nobody has got records running at 78rpm.😂😂😂
@Ölcrem Drecrahn ok. Iknow those records....but I hardly believe that anyone plays their shellac records on a Technics 1210🙄

Underrated video, thanks for putting this together guys.
The classic SL1200/1210 is the Rolex watch of turntables. In this bullshit world on constant upgrading why would you need to? I bought mine second hand when I was 18. Played literally hundreds of raves, parties etc. carried them, bumped them. I did have them in flight cases but they still look great and work perfectly. I’m 46 now! All I’ve ever done is replace the RCA cables and carts.
That's great to hear mate, you're one of the lucky ones!
Rolex is mechanical and not very accurate. It is expensive and luxurious. Is SL-1200 expensive or luxurious in turntable world? No. I'm not saying it isn't a good rock solid turntable, it really is indeed.
My main issue is the weight you really need a solid heavy turntable and the light weight MK7 really really throws me off because I really want a technique but don't want to spend $4000 for the G.
just technics has the best review he tells you what's what with the technics sl1210 Mk7 , it has platter issues , grounding and the pitch is not accurate on 7-8% it's known to technics now, they are the best digital pitch turntables out there, they look great but I'm sorry your not highlighting the issues with them

You're absolutely right! The MK7s have a lot of issues, not to mention feedback problems...

Make sure you get them serviced regularly ! 😍
Using a pair of MK7s for almost 2 year can honestly say that mixing ånd beat matching is a bliss with these..Pich control is very accurate ..
No issue with bass feedback? Precision of the pitch control is consistent? No issues with drag or speeding up?
I learnt something today
I miss my mark 2 (2002 model). It has been faulty for a while and having a problem getting it repaired. I tried one person who said he thought the AN6680 chip was faulty (platter going back and reverse all the time) but would not proceed in case it was not it.

Mk7 or PLX-1000 from pioneer? Which would you buy today?
The PLX
I have a pair of GRs and they’re fine for mixing on. The Mk2 was a hifi table when it first came out. The build quality is far better than what you get on a MK7. You get what you pay for.
After selling mine 15 years ago, I now have the money to buy some back. I loved the MK2 but they are expensive. For not much more I can get MK7...?
If your just a casual / home dj then yeah why not. We really don't know how long the Mk7 will last for compared to the mk2. Yiu buy mk2 today and it will definitely be working in 10years time. Mk7... Who knows
@@McRizzle23 out of interest, how long do you keep your cars, TVs, Sofas, beds etc etc. If it doesn’t last 10 years who gives a F. My cars cost 20k plus and don’t last half that long. These guys haven't read the manual.
Under the platter are dipswitches where you can set different functions. (easily accessible through the two holes in the platter, or by removing the entire platter)
Functions like: The startup torque (4 different torque settings) and brake (4 different brake settings), the LED color. (the classic red or blue for all LED's except the pop-up tracklight)
But also the function of the combined 33-45 buttons. You have two choises of what those buttons pressed together will do: Eighter raise the rpm to 78, or function as a reverse button.
Thanks Frankey, this was literally a plug and play comparison out of the box! Great that the MK7 has got that capability, it makes it even more of a fantastic turntable!
Thanks fish!
The weight difference is the way how the driver is build and it has a lighter power supply. I personally use them in a case so that wouldn't be a problem. It actually makes it a bit easier for travel.
One thing I am going to customise is the bottom ABS cover. Going to coat it with a rubber layer to isolate it a little bit more.
Direct drive motor on mk 7 is bether than MK2
Although I’m happy Technics brought back the 1200 range. I still prefer the original MK2 model’s cause I’m just to use to the feel of those and also I prefer the build quality of the MK2. I just prefer the nice silver buttons and the chrome tone arm, silver strobe light housing and counter weight with the back rubber grip. Even the little silver ring at the top of the feets on the MK2. The thing I’m not big is the giant cut out that is on the back side panel of the unit. Looks ugly and similar to the super OEM units. If the detachable cable was designed like the MK4 (Japan only) design. Then it would have been perfect. I just like the filled out back side of the original MK series. I would think that has to be part of the reason the newer MK series are more lighter. Also I prefer the analog QUARTZ locked pitch system than the newer digital system and of course the all metal silver 45 adapter and I’m glad they touched on the difference on the pop up target light which is clearly a more superior build quality on the older MK series. Although I do prefer the newer ultra white LED light they use now. In conclusion I would say the MK7 is more closely comparable to the MK3D model with the pushed in power switch and spare head shell holder and the pitch reset button and notch less “0” point on the pitch slider.
Unfortunately, Technics will never bring back the analog pitch adjust.
I’ve yet to get my hands on a MK7, but from
what I can see online, they look cheaper, they’re lighter, they may have a resonance problem, the pop-up light isn’t smoothly damped, it pops up fast and cheap-like, the tonearm section has some ‘wiggle’ to it from the base, etc.
I bought my pair of 1200MK2s in 2005 and I’m never gonna get rid of them. They’re still like new..despite me dragging them to all sorts of parties when I was younger 😂. They’re safe in flight cases at home now. Frankie Bones even played on them awhile back and tagged both of them up 😆😆. You can’t beat the feel of proper MK2/MK5 analog pitch. I’ll have to reserve final judgement on the MK7s until I get some mixing and blending time on them.
djhaloeight , there shit!!! I was so upset at how cheap and shitty they feel compared to an original mk2. Don’t even think of downgrading, I sold mine after 2 months and lost a lot of money, I now have two GR’s which are the true replacement to the mk2........but I’m still not happy ⁉️ guys an girls if you have a lovely pair of 1210 mk2/5 keep them!! 👍
@@daddychunk why aren't you happy about the gr? Digital pitch?
daman 71 no the digital pitch is fine👍 it still does have that “nothing point at the very end, but not a problem. They are beautifully built! They do sound better than original mk2 but not by a huge margin. The feet are more wobbly, but that’s for feedback, and there not as bad as some have said! But !! I was disappointed with the wobble.! They don’t stop like the original mk2!!! There slower, that’s not a problem mixing, I know but when I’m flicking through records, I want it to stop dead !!! Like the original. This new expensive new motor design I think was because of time code users (hifi/DJ) they were aiming for perfection! To eliminate “clogging” which no one has heard or accounted?? Maybe time code purists did? Overall they are beautiful definitely not worth the price!! I’m 44 and know my shit, anyone who wants a Technics look for second hand mk3!!!! Anyone know a guide for that?

I have to say, my 30 year old MKII is still running like a top. In near mint condition and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Aside from some very light cosmetic scratches on the top side of the plinth, my MKII is in pristine condition. Let's not look over the fact that servicing a MKII is quite easy to do or have done. I just serviced my spindle, removed the whole thing, tore down the thrust plate, cleaned and oiled it and put it back in. I'll be good for a another 2000 hours. The MKII are the workhorse of any of the 1200 series.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the dip switches underneath the platter. One can adjust the break and torque, colour of the LEDs and even 78 Rpm!
Hindsight is a terrible thing!
I admire your scratching , but mate your on DVS timecode , your not mixing proppa vinyl or testing the mixing side of the DJ turntable , they all perform brilliant with performance scratching , but it's the mixing with real vinyl where the Technics sl1210 Mk2, Mk5 wins always !!!
The technics mk7 is very nice deck , it has the best digital pitch out there it's near original technics , but it's let down by faults on the platter, grounding , pitch 7% 8% not accurate on the Led strobe , but it is million times better then Plx 1000 turntable , more accurate digital pitch for starters
"the best digital pitch out there"
I had the impression that digital pitch (alone) is the same standard on all new high end dj turntables.
@@diggemz90sdanceradiotapess84 No , what Technics designed in the Mk7 was very unique pitch slider that was near sl1200 , it's A/D Pitch Slider !!!
the top ( slider ) is analog ( fine tune like a sl1200 )
the cuicuit ( Controller chip ) digital ( step system ) that works with the cog motor , that's why all djs like the pitch on this deck !!!! no new turntable has anything like it including pioneer plx1000, but they failed to calibrate the plus 7-8 % spot on controller ( digital ) if they can fix this plus the isolation feedback etc , then this deck is a complete winner and would put plx1000 or Denon , reloop in the shade in vinyl mixing terms, but they might not update this you never know with panasonic technics
@@mrhorizon8933 That's very interesting about the A/D pitch slider, so your saying there is a varying degree of quality when it comes to digital pitch control. If Technics can fix the calibration +7-8% mark & any potential problem with feedback I'd be more keen to check out the newer Technics. Thanks for the detailed info Mr Horizon!
@@diggemz90sdanceradiotapess84 Yes Mk7 has A/D pitch slider !!! Analog slider movements on top , the chip controller is binary steps 1-8 !!!
pioneer plx1000 pitch slider is all digital ( slider & Controller ) so it be steps ( so no fine pitch tuning )
hanpin turntable motors ( laser ) not magnet Quartz direct drive !! in my opinion your better off with set of second hand Technics SL1200 or 1210 MK2 or Mk5 cheaper , slightly better pitch as it's fully Analog !!
also has the quartz direct motor system ( magnet ) and better robust tone arm and feet
I'm getting into vinyl dj,I'm between the plx 1000 which I heard and read was a little better than the technics mk7...dont knowwgich to get...I had a mk2 like 30 years ago but never got around in getting a DJ set up...big time regret...I'm 48 years old now and I want to start playing my vinyl and making this my hobbie
Instead of using a battered old Mk2, you should have borrowed a serviced one from Jay at Just Technics, at least it would have been a fairer comparison.
Thanks for the suggestion.
@@djkit Good to see the later versions (of the Mk7) have cured the dead spot in the pitch between 7 and 8 % though, it shows the company do listen and take notice of consumers.
Still got my mark 2’s, 1994 I bought them when I was 14yr. They are in my loft. Still the only way I could dj, CDJ’s in the 90’s were too much money and wouldn’t know where to start with digital system. How much do mk 2’s go for nowadays, in case I need the cash?
Ahh how times have changed! Now vinyl is much more expensive!
Every turntable is best than static Pioneer CDJ jog dial ..
The mk7 is craaaaaap, the real sucessor of mk2 is the GR model!!!! Mk7 is cheep plastick bottom plate!!!
how would you know? have you tried one ?
KnobHead
The best "last" technics was the m5g. Most features and build like a tank. And a beautiful look too.
yea wicky wicky, scratch n cut, but how well does the pitch fader hold a long mix riding a beatmach?
Theirs a few reviews on the MK7s on You Tube but the best review is by Just Technics, over 2 hours with a breakdown of the deck. By the way the MK2 arm will not fit on a MK7. The biggest let down of the MK7 is the feedback issue as their is no rubber bottom like the MK2, the MK7 has a plate inside the body which adds additional weight.
I own a powerful sound system for playing out therefore the MK2 will always be my preferred deck as I don’t need feedback, reggae music is bass heavy so feedback is a massive issue.
The MK7 looks cheap to me & I don’t think it will last as long as the original Technics, time will tell.
Silly question but why does the earthing cable not solve the feedback? What is causing it?
@@tomsii7946 it's the feet probably , tone arm another !!! you play jungle dnb with em , that bass will vibrate on them !
I have the 1210MK7, 1200MK2, 1210MK2, 1200MD3, AT-LP1240, and RP7000 and I find the MK7 to be the most inferior of the bunch. They feel light and toy-like.
ruclips.net/video/BtDn8dVZHHQ/видео.html yep!
What are they like to mix on though ?
@@lp6132not bad to mixon.
I dj on a pair of MK7s every week in a club.
I 100% still prefer my Sl1200 mk2s over the MK7s.
Tone arm section of the MK7s is not as strong.
Just gonna go on the record here (lul) and say sure we omitted reviewing the 78rpm speed because who in the comment section has decided to blast a bunch of 78s in the club? Thought not.
As you were, soldier.
Analogue pitch over the digital pitch all day long for beat mixing, just my preference.
Pich fader on Mk7 is better than Mk2 ..Tracks just stay locked for more than a minute!
@@JohnLenin-y1wI've tried both and if the analogue pitch is calibrated correctly I've found it personally to be rock solid compared to the digital pitches, maybe I've just been lucky
96'? still got mine and still love them mk7 looks good too
It makes a difference and none of you have looked for it yet I know it very well If you put the needle on the disc and turn up the volume you will hear distortion from the speakers in a separate different channel try it do the Technics is the best test overtakes and the Pioneer
i enjoy the bit about the newer cheap and not so sturdy light
and how many times you play with the antique wearing it out... lol
try it a few more times. it's cool easy to repair and tons of parts amirite?
Looked at from above I noticed the distance of the tone arm towards the platter differs and it seems the angle of the cartridge differs as well. The Mk.7 clearly is not built like the original no matter how it performs as a DJ-tool. Greetings from Hekelingen, Holland
You didn't account the parallax. Of course they differ in that view. You need to look and compare them separately and you would find they are the same. If you could compare them with printed arc protractor designed specifically for SL-1200 I'm sure they will match exactly.
Just a side note, pioneer own technics and has done for. If I remember rightly 30 odd years..
Tired to find a Mint MKII turntable? Go and buy the MK7 with no doubt, is a beast. Got a pair!💥
Thank you
The mk7s are too expensive and are cheap looking and feeling with problems involving feedback and poor components .You would paying way more for way less .You are better off with second hand older Technics in the 1200 series. They will be cheaper ,will last you a very long time, will be better built and if looked after will re sell at a decent price.
Or have the GR , i van say the better version of the MK2
no conflict of interest in this video at all, no siree
It actually shocks me how many people don't know what the strobe dots are for.
Tell us
@@fbgggodleetalent0850 Did you watch the video??
MK7's are not built like the 1200 series. The are like another version of hanpins. The platter wobbles, pitch problems, poor isolation. I rather buy a used 1200 or a pair of reloop 8000's.
We thought they were pretty similar!
No the pitch is actually fantastic believe it or not if they fix the 7-8% spot !! it's very unique pitch that's why many djs like it today , it's a
digital controller and analog slider , the fader is analog ( not step sequence )
You can change to 78rpm if you want by lifting the platter and changing dip switch to on position then pressing both 33 and 45 down at the same time. ✌️
Exactly, whoever says this is as good or better than the o.g's clearly doesn't know much about this.
Its cheap shit and as always people cant be honest - they have to toe some line. Sheep. Fuck humans.
