Vangelis - Blade Runner Blues (Cover)

- Blade Runner Blues is used (to devastating effect) more than once in the film Blade Runner. The scene in which Deckard "retires" Zhora is especially eviscerating.
This cover probably took longer than any of my others... partly because of the length and partly because of the unusually difficult to program lead sound. I've done a "Making of a Cover" video in order to talk to Keyboard Players about how to get this sound. - Видеоклипы
Amazing. Everyone learns how to play the intro theme, but I really think this is the best piece in the soundtrack.
Many thanks for your comments! I don't know if I could pick my favorite from this soundtrack, but this piece hits me in a powerful way that the others do not, especially during the Zhora scene.
"“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe ... .
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.
All those moments will be lost in time ...
... like tears in rain."
If there was any quote, that moved me, it was this one, by the great Rutger Hauer (Roy Batty).
And know ... this was pure improvisation ... .
What an actor he was, Rutger Hauer ... .
Absolutely! You may want to check out the Blade Runner Facebook group if you haven't before. There are many people who share our love of the film and music.
This song always scratches an itch. Never thought id hear an actual cover nevermind one as good as this!
Thanks for your comments! I also noticed that I've never seen an attempt at covering it... and now I know why. It took a lot of time, but it is truly worth the effort.
I'd hate for it to be an itch you couldn't scratch.
That transition at 6:48 is absolutely beautiful.
Thanks so much! After your comment, I watched this again. Vangelis gave us so many gorgeous moments.
Well I'm absolutely astounded. As others have noticed, you've replicated Vangelis' sounds so perfectly. That's something I've been trying to do for years and never got anywhere near as to what you have achieved. Full marks to you.
Thanks so much for your kind comments! I hope you keep at it; they do take time.
You nailed it! ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much!
Hi Tarus, as always true, absolute perfection, and grace. I used put this on at night, and simultaneously played a separate CD with rain along with candle light, incense and a profound sense of peace. It transports us to a realm of peace and tranquility that is ethereal. I am a die hard Blade Runner fan, and Vangelis as well. Pretty sure this is the best soundtrack Vangelis ever did. There's a sadness yet soothing feeling woven into the fabric of this composition. What's a bit distressing is there are only 1.8 K subscribers. No words can convey how much I appreciate you're gift to us with keeping this compelling and timeless art alive. When an artist creates a work of art, and gifts it to you, then it become Priceless. Thank you so much for keeping this art alive! I love every video on your channel! You really are so awesome and gracious!
Thank you so much for the most beautiful comments! When trying to describe music, words tend to fail us, but you do a wonderful job of capturing what we love about this music: (e.g., There's a sadness yet soothing feeling woven into the fabric of this composition.) I greatly appreciate your encouragement.
lol I do an extended version with rain to go to sleep at night
I think this would be great to sleep to.
Everyone has already described better than I can how absolutely marvelous this is, but I felt compelled to leave a comment if for no other reason than to add to the chorus of praise. Thank you for this. It's perfection.
I deeply appreciate comments like yours which, more than anything else, keep me motivated and also greatly help to get RUclips to show this to more people!
You make the best Vangelis covers! Thank you, I love listen them again and again
Thank you very much! They take a lot of time, but I think the music is worth the effort.
I tend to be too stunned for words when it comes to Blues. And your work is no different. I admire the passion you have while playing.
Thanks so much for your comments! (I enjoyed your video The Midnight - Explorers.)
Vangelis did write the perfect movie score. It encapsulates the dystopian environmental aesthetics and mood.
When I say it's perfect, it's because it is.
I agree! An unbelievable achievement of perfection. This piece in particular really nails the dystopian mood.
i shared your brilliant rendedtions with a few music friends. Mad kool you arent far from

i was telling a friend earlier tonight how i felt about Vengelis score, its a flawless creating that transports the audience to a dystopian environment that makes you not only feel it, but smell it, and listen to it. The background Ambient urban sounds, people, cars, etc then Vangelis creates what I'm my firm die hard film score lover understands,
Vangelis created the perfect confluence of all that Phillip K Dick wrote. Vangelis clearly read the book and probably others to understand the dystopian aesthetic PK Dick wrote. And you are paying the highest tribute to its flawless creation. Thank you for sharing your rendition.
Im in instant follower of your sound.
What's next?
Chariots of Fire ?
@@TaurusTarkus
Thanks! My daughter lives up around Hamilton Heights. There are some great music stores around your area. There was one I used to order from that had a warehouse in Brooklyn that I once visited to return some things, and now I'm wondering if they have closed. I can't remember the name.
Thanks for your comments! Chariots of Fire was my first exposure to Vangelis, and I used to go to sleep to the album and love it deeply. Five Circles was my first Vangelis cover, and I have always been curious why it is my least popular Vangelis cover when I love the music so much. I guess I have not done Chariots of Fire partly because it is so iconic and perfect, and I think it may be hard to get close to that. It's been covered by so many, and they are never half as good. There also is a video of Vangelis playing it; ...some of what I try to do is give people the opportunity to see some of these great works being performed. Do you think I should do it?
the best Cover...in real time.
Many thanks!

this is very very close to the original composition. congratulations you’ve recreated the atmosphere of this timeless piece gloriously
Absolutely. So much attention to details and even recreated faithfully without the original instruments. Take my hat off sir !
Thank you both for your kind comments. They mean a lot!
Absolutely beautiful cover. Retiring Zhora scene is not possible without this song. Thank you for your sharing.

Such a beautiful cover. So close to the original, yet distinct in its rendition. Thank you for a beautiful rendition of one of the most soothing and moving works of art ever created. I miss Vangelis but works such as these help salve the wound. Thank you.
Thank you for such beautiful comments! I deeply appreciate it.
Just two words... Wow Wow
Thank you, Thank you!

It's like hearing it for the first time all over again....
I love this comment; thanks so much!
Fabulous rendition..you have stayed true to the maestro's performance with all the subtle nuances and sonic inflections from his original score. Wonderful achievement....
Thanks for your comments! They mean a lot to me.
still loving the song!
Thanks! I really love this one too. I appreciate your comments which helps to get eBay to show it to more people.
I'm not sure what pushes more to the eternity this whole feeling if the soundtrack by Vangelis or the movie by Ridley Scott. Either way bravo for your amazing cover.
Thanks! As amazing as the whole film is, I think the single most brilliant 'piece of the whole' is the otherworldly score.
This is so underrated, what a talent!!
Thanks so much! Comments like yours are the best way to get RUclips to share it with more people, so I appreciate your comments.
Still loving it 😍 been trying parts on a MODX 8+ and giving me an appreciation on How good your are at this, one of my favorite movie songs!

Thank you very much!
Just Devine! Amazing! Holy God
Thanks so much for your comments! I hope you enjoy my other Vangelis covers as well.
Dang !! Well you mentioned it in your other post so I had to pull this one up. Just killer - REV2 patch is spot on and I dig the bass tone. You mentioned tempo/timing in one of the "making of" vids and that has to be a challenge. Certainly there's a sense of underlying time in his music but V. makes it all seem very improvised. Has to be really hard to nail that. Such an iconic melody in an iconic score from an iconic film and a visionary director.
Yes; timing is difficult. It's not like there's a beat. I think of this one as a long series of beautiful Vangelis musical phrases. I then worked at trying to capture the feel of each individual phrase. I think I'm close to his tempo in the first 1/3 - 1/2 and then play the second half perhaps a little faster? If you watch the "Making Of" for this video, I play a lot of it with a slightly different feel again... and there it's also completely live. I hope you check out my other Vangelis videos as well. Thanks for your comments!
So soothing, listening to this in the background. Thanks!
Thanks. It's a little longer which works well in the background.
Wonderful performance, it sounds as close as possible to the original! Really enjoyed watching you play this timeless peace of music masterpiece.
Many thanks for your comments!
Phantastic performance!
Thanks so much!
Well done. Any fan of Emerson and Vangelis is a winner in my book.
Thanks for your comments! I used to cover more by Emerson, but now have more by Vangelis. I love them both and the Vangelis covers are so much more popular.
This was almost perfect
Thanks
The best reprise of « blade runner blues ! All my congratulations ! I know it’s very hard to play the solo. By the way, why you didn’t play it on your Hydrasynth deluxe ? Shared on my facebook page.
Thanks for your kind comments! During the long process of developing the lead sound, I worked on getting the sound on both instruments... a contest between the two. For several weeks, the Hydrasynth was winning, and I assumed that I would play it on it (which would have been handier at the end). But eventually the Rev2 caught up and did a far better job. I guess sometimes analog is better for analog.
Wonderful!
Thanks!
Grandmaster, bravo!!! this is cover so true-like original
Many thanks for your comments!
Excellent sound and playing! You're a Vangelis replicant.
Many thanks! I used one of your templates on the lead sound! Be sure to watch the companion "Making of a Cover" video, where I again mention your brilliant work.
@@TaurusTarkus Right on... I attempted that Blues Lead sound as well, and got fairly close,.. but yours sounds really excellent and super emotive!... look forward to hearing your insights in "making of" video!
Thanks!
Awesome ☺♥♪
Thanks!
Without a doubt the best cover of this emotive piece I've ever heard...you have studied the nuances of his performance well and captured the atmosphere and tonal ambiance of the composition eloquently.
Thanks for your wonderful comments! Most people who attempt anything with this piece simply play "in the style of"... and after all the time involved in analyzing the actual notes and phrases, now I know why! It was a mountain to climb, but the piece is so worth the effort.
Beautiful version of this piece. Happy holidays! Cheers Ola
Thanks so much! Happy Holidays to you as well. (I recorded this on Christmas.)
@@TaurusTarkus Not sure if you've got the Arturia CS-80 V vst but the L.A. 2019 patch sounds pretty good too.
I do not. So L.A. 2019 is a Blade Runner Blues patch? Dang; I'm sorry I missed that. It could have been helpful. I probably should invest in it at some point. I don't tend to use the software instruments for performances, but GX-80 has been helpful for research and for developing patches.
excellent in all ways! bravo

I’ve already commented about a month ago….just had to say that the way you have programmed those sounds and also to play that, the timing etc….really good show!!!
This cover took forever, and I kept going because of the hope that people like you would appreciate the details. So thanks very much for your comments!

It's a bit like "Shine on you crazy diamond 💎" isn't it.... beautiful
Thanks! Yes; I know what you mean. When I do a little improvising on it, it can go in that direction. I have a huge love for Shine On and frequently work on it on guitar. David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist.
For me,the sound track iBlade runner is like a co-lead actor.....so important to the movie.
Very much so! It's an amazing film on so many levels, but I think the most brilliant piece is the otherworldly music from Vangelis.
Just perfect ♥

Absolutely Beautiful. Amazing song. Thank you for this. It upsets me how good this is. Brings tears to my eyes. All those moments are not lost because of you.
Thanks so much for your comments! As you are into photography, do you have any suggestions regarding the filming of my videos? I'm always trying to get the best angle, and I'm frequently unsure of what F stop I should be on, etc... Thanks!
@@TaurusTarkus Put a filter over a backlight (blue or orange) F stop 4.0 - try that first because only you and your hands should be in focus. You can start our with a bit of fog in the room then let it dissipate and you will become more in focus. Use some snoot's on a couple lights just to light up a specific area you want in your scene.
Thanks for your suggestions! I had to do some research this morning on some things. I guess the first step is to invest in more lighting.
@@TaurusTarkus Agreed. Why not make your studio reflect the same look/feel of the movie. Edits that go closer to your hand. Etc Fade to some scenes in the movie.

I woke up and had the pleasure seeing you did a new post. Amazingly done. Prophet X Rhodes and I think you have a split going on with a bass patch in the lowest octave. Hydrasynth controlling the behringer vp330 strings ? Love the occasional touch somewhere late in the video of the modwheel on the rev2 :). How does it feel to be so close to the maestro when playing this ? ❤
Thanks! The Prophet Rev2 does the lead. On the Yamaha Montage, one can easily blend parts, and so I have a CS-80 Warm Bass on the Left half, a Rhodes on the Right, and a Stack of the two in the middle. I talk a lot about layering strings in my "Making of a Cover" videos. Unfortunately, the Behringer VC340 cannot be used with a sustain pedal 😫 so I had to make use of overdubbing. (The original VP-330 could not either, and so we see Vangelis using weights to hold down keys in some live videos.) Regarding the Modwheel, I would have rather played that using the Ribbon Controller of the Hydrasynth, but the Rev2 was the clear winner for getting the sound. Regarding getting closer to the Maestro, it's interesting that slowing down the music does give you an appreciation for what he did. There was a great deal of overdubbing, and the overdubs do not cleanly line up in the surgical way that lines do with MIDI. I think that looseness is a lot of what our ears love about the Nemo Studios projects. There were also a few times, in listening to the music very slowly, when I could literally figure out the fingering that he used on fast runs, which really made me feel like I was with him.
you're so good, this cover is so identical if not perfect, thanks for uploading this piece of art, keep it up 🙏
Thank you so much for your kind comments and encouragement!
Absolutely brilliant rendition!

Have you ever considered making an extended morning at the Bradbury cover?
Thanks! And thanks for bringing that to my attention. I have the 25 anniversary cds, and that piece is not on it! I guess it's on the 29th. So the only times that I've heard it are when watching the film, which I haven't seen as many times as most fans. I'll have to listen more.

Amazing, i was expecting multiple videos, can’t believe you can play it all together. This music is heavenly- imagine never having heard this? Imagine how fortunate we are to be alive and hear such beauty.
Thanks so much for your comments! That's an excellent perspective regarding how fortunate we are to have been able to hear, appreciate and enjoy this music. We are truly lucky to live in a time contemporary to Vangelis and so many other great musicians. I see from your channel that you recognize the truth of non-duality, which is an insight that most people sadly miss. I'm a fan of Sam Harris, who focuses a lot on this insight in his writings, talks, and meditation app. As I say in the "Making of video," the above video is not 100% live. As you can see, the lead and Fender Rhodes parts are, but some of the bass and strings are not. You can see a demo of 100% live along with the discussion: ruclips.net/video/G0UPTgsLBzU/видео.html
@@TaurusTarkus Well, substantially live then! I actually rewatched Blade Runner last night - amazing movie, and can there be another one that is more intertwined with the score, where another score is simply unimaginable? I can't think of one. How amazing that music is often a gateway to the non-dual timeless world - and this is genuinely one of the best examples of it. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
Thanks for your comments. I totally agree about the Blade Runner soundtrack! I just found an excellent video, which you may have seen before: The Danish National Symphony doing a Blade Runner Suite: ruclips.net/video/hMd5_DcLNdE/видео.html

I tried it on my channel as well, with some video of the movie, but it sounds, meh, with only one midi player and a plugin, lol
great job as always !!
Thank you for your wonderful comments! Although they're getting cheaper all the time, keyboards are still very expensive. I've been very lucky and have also been playing them for 40 years. (I wish I could go back and buy a few instruments from back then, but most were super expensive back then too!) This piece took an unusually long amount of time to put together, so just keep working at it. We share a love for a lot of the same music. David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist, and for the last year I have been thinking about doing a cover of A.I. by John Williams. I enjoyed several of your videos and appreciate your comments.
@@TaurusTarkus First let me thank you for your quick and wonderfull reply, I really appreciate it. Yes, we share very similar taste in music, Pink Floyd really is my favorite band altough I really like every music style as long as it hits you emotionally and/or gives you energy and a good feeling. I really like melancholic music as well, that's why I love Vangelis so much, and especially the Blade Runner soundtrack, it's such a cult classic.
I can only imagine how much work you put in this piece and all the other pieces on your channel, I also especially loved Rachel's song cover you made with your daughter, such talent, I never did think somebody could actually recreate that atmosphere and singing, it's truly incredible, your channel deserves so much more views and likes.
I haven't learned any music, I am more of a sounddesigner and I sometimes recreate the David Glimour solos with a fantastic guitar plugin that is samplebased.
I'm currently taking my first pianolessons and hope to expand my knowledge to do the covers more accuratly.
A.I. was such a moving, wonderfull movie, the journey of the little android boy discovering the world and dealing with loss is such heartbreaking, the music did accentuate it so much and I loved every second of it.
I cant wait for your rendition/cover of What dreams may come or The Reunion from JWilliams.
Take care!
I've seen various Pink Floyd tribute bands, and I'm going to see another in a couple weeks. One of my biggest musical regrets is that I didn't go with two of my brothers when they went to see The Division Bell tour, which I think may have been the last time that David Gilmour toured in the U.S.? He's been working on a new album. I don't play guitar as much as I used to, but I still love to try to work on his solos... He has a brilliant way of getting the most out of each note. I could easily go down the road of doing just John Williams covers, but I don't think people want to hear his work played on keyboards. It's better with the big orchestras. This is perhaps one reason that I haven't done What Dreams May Come; I don't know if many people would watch it, despite how similar it is to the style of Vangelis! I'm just listening to For Always from A.I., which reminds me that I was very fortunate to see Josh Groban in Sweeney Todd on Broadway, which is another side of music I deeply love. Best of luck with your lessons. It's not an easy instrument but is worth the effort.
I see Zara running for her life smashing through plate glass. Getting hit and going down. Rising and trying to run again only to get hit again. And falling.
Indeed! One of the most devastating scenes I can think of.
Good job

No ribbon on the Q2, and I’m considering chopping it in for the Gemini… I love the UI on the Quantum but it really lacks in management compared to the masterpiece that is the Montage, so may just plump for on management and pure sound design.
You have me looking at the Gemini this morning... I'm curious about the ribbon controller, which looks a lot nicer than the one on the Hydrasynth. I love the binaural stereo design. It looks like Oscillator 1 doesn't have pulse, which could be annoying. I wish it had a 12 pole filter option. 256 patch slots doesn't seem like enough. Sure looks luxurious.
