"But... because I'm already in a long-term committed relationship with the Discworld series, having started with City Watch, now going back to [The Color of Magic], I'm not mad about it. I'm having a good time!" This is why I always advise people to get into Discworld with later books before going back to read these. These won't get you into the series, but if you're into the series, these won't get you off of it. I'm glad you're having fun. BACK TO THE VIDEO!
I'm glad you enjoyed The Color of Magic and Light Fantastic so much. They just so different from the rest of the series, that it's hard to recommend them to the beginners. Many people think the series is not for them after reading The Color of Magic, when it's not necessarily the case.
Happy you got to Colour of Magic and Light fantastic, i understand why they recommend some of his later work to start wtih, but it really breaks my heart seeing how many people end up avoiding the first two books altogether because of that.
I say one of the best aspects Dragonball is that it has very very good panel work/paneling especially when you get to Dragonball Z .Hope you appreciate it!
I'm so glad you're enjoying Colour of Magic! Bravo for ignoring the people who say ignore! Edit: I wrote this too early, glad you enjoyed them both! 🎉🎉🎉😊
Great that you enjoy these books. And can't agree more that this is a fine starting point as well. When I was 18 I picked up the colour of magic and light fantastic up on a whim at an airport as my first Pratchett book. Just because I used to play the discworld video game, really. I'm a fan ever since. I understand people who recommend to start at Guards Guards, but personally, I really think it does not matter.
I read Colour of Magic last week because I need something light and fun after each The First Law book. It took me 2 weeks to get through the first two parts. But I flew through the last two in 3 days. I guess, give me dragons and my enjoyment is guaranteed. I can read anything as long it has dragons
Those first two books are really hilarious, and I don't tolerate people saying they aren't good LOL! I started with the first book and have read them through in publication order - because I'm not a monster - and they are so fun.
Awesome to know you enjoyed the first Discworld books Merph, 'cause I heard similar comments about to not read them. You made me think the opposite, I'm into reading The Colour of Magic now.
Dragonball is a classic and has such a special place in my heart as it was the first manga I ever read before I knew what manga was 😭. With that being said IT IS VERY MUCH A PRODUCT OF ITS TIME IN THE BEGINNING but if you are willing to push through it’s a fun story 🥹
I *think* that those first two books are the only places where you get a real description of the Luggage - it's around in the later wizard books, but IIRC there's no great detail and it's a 'if you know you know' situation. So it would have been sad if you actually skipped them.
I really hope you love OG dragon ball one of my favorite series. I’m going to reading it soon since I have only seen the show. I know there are small differences later on but mostly the same. Hope you love it as much as I did
Love following your Discworld journey! I started my first Pratchett about a year ago, I decided to go pub order all the way. I also didn't understand why Colour of Magic gets dismissed so much. Like you, I rank it above The Light fantastic. I'm on book 17 right now and I'm still having the best time. Hope you continue to love Discworld this fiercely!
I really enjoyed those two first books, its a fun sprawling adventure and an amusing introduction to the world. I recently finally watched the adaptation of those two books and it's quite amusing, Sean Austin is perfect as Twoflower, Tim Curry is also there chewing the scenery and it's just fun.
YES! I started with color of magic and light fantastic and loved them. I really dislike that seemingly most fans are against them. They're funny af, not having a deeper meaning isn't a detractor
I’m happy you’re all caught up on yona! It’s my favorite manga. I know objectively there are much better ones. I rolled my eyes a lot at it when I first started reading it but by the time I reached the end of the water tribe arch I realized I how invested I had become in all the characters. For some reason this story really hits me. It’s become something really special to me. If you ever feel like doing a more in depth video on the series im 100% here for it. Im glad you had fun with it!
One big "problem" with The Color of Magic is that it is, to a large extent, a parody of a lot of old fantasy/swords and sorcery books. So people who are unfamiliar with those works (which is probably most modern readers) aren't going to get all the references or fully appreciate the book.
Honestly I think CoM and LF are the soul of the Discworld if not my absolute favourites. They’re a bit like Pratchett’s description of raw untamed magic, crude and not fully formed but containing the essence of everything else. And you can’t possibly interact properly with later Rincewind books if you haven’t read them. It’s true I didn’t start with them either, Mort was my first waaaaay back in like ‘94-‘95. Then Pratchett was my entire adolescence!
"The Color of Magic" and "Light Fantastic" is fantastic. Seeing the world through an ingenious idea of the eyes of the worlds first TOURIST. It's soo great.
Dragon Ball?!?!? That's a surprise, a good one. I think you might like it. It's a similar vibe to One Piece. Not as good world building (though the world IS pretty interesting) or plot, but the fights are cool and the characters are very very likeable and goofy and the villains are really cool, some of the most iconic in all of anime/manga.
I'd also heard that the Color of Magic is a bad place to start Discworld, but I decided to start by release date anyway, but I had so much fun with it and it 100% invested me for the whole Discworld journey. If anything, now I'm even more excited to read the later books because if this is the worst I can't imagine how good the rest will be. Also, really excited for the Monster discussions!
I started with these two books on my first time reading Disworld….And I loved them so much and after that I read everything from Pratchett I got my hands on..I have never understood why people don’t find The Color of Magic and Light Fantastic to be a good read. 😢 I am very happy that you enjoyed the adventures of Rincewind and Twoflower! 🎉😊
I like Colour of Magic, but, I do often recommend friends just starting with Discworld books start with something like the City Watch series and then move to something like Rinceworld. Not because I think it's worth skipping, but, I think it's better to start with a great representation of Pratchett as a hook and then go back his early stuff.
I love that you loved TCOM and TLF. I'm surprised to hear that some people don't rate them. I read these when they were released. I guess I can understand people suggesting different reading orders, but when you grow up with them, you don't know anything other than the release order.
In my country everyone and their grandmas would sit in front of the TV to watch every new episode of dragon ball and it's the show that got me into anime/manga when I was a kid so sometimes I forget there's some people who haven't watched/read it. It was such a big thing in my country that it's a concept oddly hard to grasp lol
So you have caught up to Yona. I'm so glad that despite the beginning being rough for you, you have enjoyed it. I really hope that now that you are caught up, you are up to making a dedicated Yona video sometime in the future (preferably with spoilers 🙏). Thank you so much for having read this manga, with it being my favorite and all. I thoughroughly enjoyed your reactions to it even if it was spoiler-less. Somewhat sad that this may be last time that you talk about Yona, but it was fun while it lasted. Hope you enjoy Monster. It is great. Regarding Dragon Ball, what a surprise!!! I really don't understand how people say that Dragon Ball has a rough start. Especially considering that it was an instant hit when it first came out. Yes, the story started drastically different compared to what the manga is known for today, but it transitioned to that after it was already a hit. I think this disconnect is due to how the anime was introduced to the West, which I think generates wrong expectations for the beginning of the story. Regardless of what people say, I hope you have a fun time with it as well.
I also loved The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic! I read all the Death books first and had also heard all the warnings and I still don't get it. I would have absolutely continued the series after just those two. I'm reading in publication order now and it's fun
2:43 The music and the boat make up probably one of the most jolly segments I've ever seen in your vlogs. Reminded me of Yuru Camp scenes - an anime about camping.
I just started reading this I'm about 10% in Right after the tavern where 2 flower wants to take everyone's picture This story is hilarious I'm loving it
When I was a teenager I started with "Mort", then read "The Colour of Magic". I enjoyed it also a lot though I liked the other one (and also "Guards" Guards") more. Pratchett was amazing! Thanks for your reviews and greetings from Germany!
Not gonna lie, you reading Dragonball caught me way of guard. I was like:"What?". Something like Naruto, sure. But Dragonball, I am really interested in what you will have to say. Especially because early Dragon ball or part 1 is quite different compared to Dragon ball Z. I'm excited.
Yeah, it caught me off-guard, too. I'm excited to see what she thinks of it. I feel like she'll like it. I actually think that she may enjoy early Dragon Ball more than Z, or at the very least, like it more than most people do, considering how much she is into satire. But we'll have to wait and see.
I started Discworld with Guards Guards and then went back to the Colour of Magic. The night watch books and Vimes are still my favourites. Small gods is my fave stand alone.
I love Terry Pratchett and I am glad to find someone reading and enjoying it for the first time. I have started reading some of the books you have recommended and I'm looking forward to watching your spolier reviews to them and compare my experiences with yours. Subscribed!
To be honest if you're looking for 'the worst Pratchett can do' it would probably be his last books - Raising Steam and Shepherd's Crown. By that point his condition was definitely taking its toll and they don't even feel like it was Sir Terry writing.
I am so glad you loved The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic as much as I did. I was really disheartened by all the hate for Rincewind and these initial books.
I’ve never read Dragon Ball but I just finished watching the amine with my boyfriend for the first time (he’s seen it multiple times as it’s his favorite) and now we’ve just started watching Dragon Ball Z and im loving it! I’m thinking of reading the manga sometime
I am SO happy you decided to read Akatsuki no Yona! Yona is widely considered to have one of the best character developments in Shojo series. And I just really love all these characters and the political plot. Also since you mentioned the magic at 00:50 : if you like clever use of magic (that actually has some sort of law behind it and can´t just randoomly be created) I can only recommend you the manga "Witch Hat Atelier". It doesnt have many chapters so far so you should be able to read through it pretty fast. But the artwork is absolutly amazing and praised by everyone I know (who read it). It´s very special, you will be immersed by this story and the stunning art immediately! And the characters grow on you so fast it´s insane!
love that youre caught up with yona now! as someone who loves the series i remember sweating when it was a rough start but rlly happy to see you enjoying it now :) are you planning on maybe making a video about yona in the future?
Maybe after the series is complete. I’ve enjoyed it a lot but more on the level of Mermaid Saga and others that have just been in reading vlogs but not gotten a dedicated video 😊
Dude, I know that feeling. I was sweating too when she was struggling to read the first few Volumes. Thankfully, she managed to push through and now likes it.
With Color of Magic I really enjoyed the first two parts but the last third of the book put me off, to the point I didn’t bother to read Light Fantastic. However I have read Guards Guards, Mort, Wyrd Sisters, and am currently reading Witches Abroad! 🧙♀️
I started with Color of Magic unfortunately and that was weird and strange and it took me a couple years to go back to his books. I was intrigued by the character Death and so went into Mort. Really enjoyed that one!
I'm sure you've been told about the cinematic adaptation of those two Discworld books starring an actor or three you might enjoy. But if not, I'd love to see you check that out at some point.
I also loved Discworld from the very first book. I've always been a bit frustrated by the various reading orders because they skip over that the development of the Discowrld as a society across all the novels is such a delightful part of the series. That said, whichever book that you fall in love with was the right place to have started regardless of what anyone else thinks. Are you planning to read the novel or the manga adaption of Pancreas? I've been eagerly waiting for you to start on some light novels and pancreas is good place to start.
Thanks for the new video Merphy. And love the interludes. Happy you like the colour of magic, forget the naysayers...each to our own if ya love it ya love it.
I'm curious about the Wizard DW books because the Wizards in the City Watch & Death books, are some of my least favorite side stories...I just finish Equal Rites and loved it, can't wait to start the next Witches DW book
I pretty much started with Color of Magic. I had tried to read Guards! Guards! but found the opening to be very dry. There is a whole spectrum of Pratchett; some people are fine with the sillier side, and there are definitely weaker Discworld books than the first two.
I think that, knowing that you like The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, more people should have predicted you’d like The Color of Magic 😂 I think you hit on the core of it. TCoM/TLF are both perfectly fun parodies/satires! It’s just that they aren’t tackling the topics the later series tackles, so if people prefer a bit more thematic meat to their satire, they can be a disappointment.
I don't know about DragonBall. It is a classic and i hope you enjoy it. If you're interested in dark fantasy manga i highly recommend made in abyss. They're may be a couple things that bother you in the beginning but trust its so good!
I think publication order is the best way to read Pratchett... but I don't think its the best way to get someone hooked on the books. The way you've done them is pretty much how I recommend people start. The Colour of Magic isn't a *bad* book, but its certainly not a *typical* Pratchett novel. Its a road trip through Fantasy tropes. You start with a take on Leiber's Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, travel through Lovecraft, and you should be just about hitting Pern. Pratchett said it took him a few books to "discover the joy of Plot." Edit: I see you've read past that now. Did you notice the cliffhanger at the end of the book... where Rincewind is literally hanging off a cliff? The Colour of Magic was commissioned as four short stories, which later became a single novel. That's why its split up, and it kind of feels like there were some other adventures in between sections.
Sweet Mercy, Merphy is starting DragonBall. Personally, I like Dragon Ball more that Dragon Ball Z, but it most definitely is a bit rough in a lot of places. Like if Fishman Island Sanji was a character.
I had the feeling you'll enjoy the first books as well. I don't think they are bad, the biggest issue is that the rest of the series is quite different. I't makes me want to start the series again.
Im actually very shocked you picked DragonBall(I thought youd pick Naruto). I didnt think it would be your style of manga, as its all about fighting, especially when you get to later parts of the series. Warning that it has alot of outdated humor and has a rough beginning as it was made in the 1980s. But I hope you enjoy it nonetheless! This series is one of the grandfathers of manga.
Of all the mangas out there I didn't expect you to pick up Dragonball. I was sure it will be a fighting shonen, since your last was HxH and it was some time ago, but DB is really unexpexcted. I'm kinda sitting here shocked hahahaha Thought you will pick a newer one. Hope you enjoy it, the manga supposed to be way better than the anime. Maybe I will read it someday too, I only watched certain animes and not everything from it.
@@merphynapierreviews I would suggest sailor moon instead or watch the anime series (there is a lot) but I do wish you the best of luck. I am sure someone told you that early chapters are different format so get ready...
@@merphynapierreviews I wouldn't say it is essential for shaping manga. Something like Dororo is called to be the father of all manga and would fit that category much better. Same for the father of fighting shonen would be Fist of the North Star, DB just made manga way more popular in Japan and outside of it in general. After DB many fighting shonen got inspired by DB, so yeah in that sense it is important there. Demon Slayer did the same thing in this current generation. Even though in the very newest manga competitions, many judges are annoyed cause they are so much influenced by Chainsaw Man! XD But I'm not here do dismiss your decision. There is a reason you chosed that, so as I said enjoy!
@@sloopgamer1730 what about doreamon and kimba the white lion??? Or AKIRA and ASTRO BOY...there is a lot of manga/anime out there. Let her choose on what to read and of she likes it then she likes it, if not then no harm done...after all each to our own.
yay dragon ball! Literally nobody covers dragon ball, some of the largest DBZ channels on the website, guys who have been watching dragon ball z for 20+ years and have goku tattoos and a vegeta themed car don't bother reading/watching original dragon ball. I have no idea how it holds up if you're not a 90s kid doing bjj and judo feeling like goku, she might hate it but god damn if it's not the progenitor of every other shonen to come after it, from hairstyles to wearing orange. Guys like Oda literally saying "Dragon Ball has already done all the things that a child could possibly be happy about. (laugh) So, I used that as the basis to start from so I didn't go against it."
Read Mort at a friends insistence, finished it but didn’t enjoy it. Asking for an opinion, did I not get his humour or is there a better book to read as a beginner to his series?
Woo! Finally, someone who is just as confused as me about why TCoM and LF get such a bad rap! I started reading Discworld in published order (not knowing any better), and never once did I feel this was an impediment to me continuing! This is like someone saying skip A New Hope because Empire Strikes Back is a better film (ok, maybe not a perfect analogy...)
So excited to see a new Discworld read! But perhaps you enjoy it more because you’ve already had a taste of the Discworld in it’s more sophisticated and developed form? I don’t think CoM is bad, just not great. The books didn’t seem to be going anywhere. Not wrapped up as well. But still worth a read. I think people were wary because many fans have seen people who read CoM and came to the conclusion Discworld was not for them. I’m also really excited to see you encounter TP’s ‘voice’ as it changed over time, even as he returned to the same characters. I’m taking bets with myself as to which books you’ll like better. 😂
Well Merphy DRAGON BALL is a simple and fun manga so if you did not start at a young age...you might not like it but MONSTER is kinda heavy so DB might help. Also did you notice that you said yall a lot in this vlog??? There is a Dirty Old Man in DB if you can tolerate him...KUDOS maybe you should read NARUTO instead.
The colour of magic and the light fantastic were written as a parody and criticism of the plethora of Tolkien clones that were the majority of fantasy book sir Terry found on the shelves of his local bookshop the sheer number of authors who have sited Pratchett as an influence on their own writing yet none have tried to copy his writing like some copied Tolkien shows how well his intention broaden the scope of what fantasy is worked
Wow, I actually never expected you to start Dragon Ball. This is going to be fun.

I¨m so glad your reading Monster, it´s one of my favorites, I´m so exited, I´m gonna re read it along with you guys :D :D
I liked reading Discworld when there was no build up and it was just fun and silly. You kind of grew with them. So glad you're enjoying them.
Luggage is among my favourite characters in Discworld and I was mortified he was only in Rincewinds novels.
Cute dragon drinking tea shirt
I reread Frenchman's Creek and am started Triss of the Emerald Sea as my first Sanderson book this week. 😁
love that youre caught up with yona now! as someone who loves the series i remember sweating when it was a rough start but rlly happy to see you enjoying it now :) are you planning on maybe making a video about yona in the future?
Maybe after the series is complete. I’ve enjoyed it a lot but more on the level of Mermaid Saga and others that have just been in reading vlogs but not gotten a dedicated video 😊
Dude, I know that feeling. I was sweating too when she was struggling to read the first few Volumes. Thankfully, she managed to push through and now likes it.
I love Rincewind!
With Color of Magic I really enjoyed the first two parts but the last third of the book put me off, to the point I didn’t bother to read Light Fantastic. However I have read Guards Guards, Mort, Wyrd Sisters, and am currently reading Witches Abroad! 🧙♀️
Monster finally yay!!!
I started with the color of magic and loved it 🤷🏻♀️
I started with Color of Magic unfortunately and that was weird and strange and it took me a couple years to go back to his books. I was intrigued by the character Death and so went into Mort. Really enjoyed that one!
Ook, OOK! EEK!
For anime-manga- I recommend Mushishi
Definitely hidden gem.
I think that, knowing that you like The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, more people should have predicted you’d like The Color of Magic 😂
I think you hit on the core of it. TCoM/TLF are both perfectly fun parodies/satires! It’s just that they aren’t tackling the topics the later series tackles, so if people prefer a bit more thematic meat to their satire, they can be a disappointment.
Where did you get that wonderful tee-shirt of the dragon drinking tea?
I love Discworld. The Color of Magic is where i started. Skip it??? Ridiculous!!!!!
I don't know about DragonBall. It is a classic and i hope you enjoy it. If you're interested in dark fantasy manga i highly recommend made in abyss. They're may be a couple things that bother you in the beginning but trust its so good!
🖤
Ok...I might start with Colour...I don't want to read about hard topics. We all live hard topics so it's fun to escape all that.
if oyu really want some more slice of life mnaga you should check out snow white with the red hair at some point
You loved both "The Color of Magic" and "The Light Fantastic"? Listening to you effervesce, I'm so happy I was wrong!
Pratchett said it took him a few books to "discover the joy of Plot."
Edit: I see you've read past that now.
I'm kinda sitting here shocked hahahaha
Thought you will pick a newer one.
Hope you enjoy it, the manga supposed to be way better than the anime. Maybe I will read it someday too, I only watched certain animes and not everything from it.
Like sailor moon. DB is an old G mega franchise with a SOLID fan base...I wish Merphy luck.
Dragonball was so essential for shaping manga so I feel like I need to at least give it a go now that I’m a manga reader too!
XD
But I'm not here do dismiss your decision. There is a reason you chosed that, so as I said enjoy!
@@sloopgamer1730 what about doreamon and kimba the white lion??? Or AKIRA and ASTRO BOY...there is a lot of manga/anime out there. Let her choose on what to read and of she likes it then she likes it, if not then no harm done...after all each to our own.
hi Merphy, from which book do you recommend to start Discworld?
yay dragon ball!
Yoooooo, I was not expecting Dragonball. Lets go i hope you like it
Read Mort at a friends insistence, finished it but didn’t enjoy it.
🧡📚🧡📚🧡📚🧡
READ HEROES OF OLYMPUS ❤ pls
Are you going to read discworld in numerical order now?
Yes!
Really it should be a bad book? I started with this (never heard about this series before) many years before. This is just so fun. 👏👏
RIGHT?!
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas. Did you mean the light novel or manga? Most light novels end up having manga adaptations.
