- Yes, you CAN make your own trapping lure. The more you spend on lure, the more fur you have to catch before making a profit. Make your own folks, it's not that hard to do. This video is not the finished lure, but making the ingredients for it. You have to start with the basics. Here's how.
Good Morning Sunshine...Windy and Nasty here this Morning
Good Morning! Same here....don't let a tree get ya! Stuck on the phone again today.....
I was always taught to make your own from the critters you get. Maybe buying a little to get started but homemade works great. With all those mice it’s no wonder they’re food for just about everything. Enjoy the day👍👍
Same here. Store bought lures work fine, but the homemade stuff does too, without any of the cost. When you think about it, none of those exotic lure ingredients are found in the wild where we are trapping. They work out of curiosity about what that crazy smell it.
By the looks of things, Spring has unofficially arrived in your locale. Interesting talk on making lure. Catch you on the next one.
I was hoping so, but snowed again today....
Good afternoon Muskrat...got a funny story about buck lure...one of my friends was a trapper... and a hunter...he had a bottle of buck lure on his dashboard of his truck...it froze up and broke...drained in the defrost vent...went rabbit hunting with him one cold morning...it was an interesting ride...I won't ever forget...beagle sitting on the seat in the middle... and we all rode
...in the "pew"... have a good day fishing...hope you get some fish...
HA! That is funny!
Good morning Gary!
I agree with you 100 percent.
I don't buy any lures. I make my own and it works just as well as the lure from the company's. There's not enough money in trapping to be giving it away for some lure that you could make yourself, that works just as well.
You folks take care.
Good Morning! Exactly!!! Every penny you spend is just that much more you have to make before you break even. Stuff like gas, you can't control, but I haven't bought lure for years....I might try a bottle now and then, but it's rare.
Good morning. Have a great day
Good morning! Thank you, and you have a great one too!
i started trapping around 8 im 54 now, well i bought some lure for racoon i was tellin this ol boy around your age about it and he laught and said boy dont wasit your money let me show how its done. i was hooked it probably was just as fun makin lure as it was trapin. thanks for the video
It Is! Yep! It's all marketing. None of us want to believe it's out fault when we don't catch something. It's much easier to blame the lure, bait, or equipment instead.......but really, either the critters aren't there to be caught, or it's our fault. The homemade stuff works just as well, and it's fun to do!
👃oooey!i can smell that stuff from here!good luck and have fun at the river!
HA! Them coyotes are running my way!
Wind pulled the door outta my hand when I let the pup dogs out this morning! Straight down the Big Lost aimed right at my door! Glad I didn't have my hat on, or it'd be in Burley by now. Old Trappers have an odor, eh? Reminds me of a quip I read in a book titled "Don't Squat With Yer Spurs On". Said "Just cuz a man's a mite whiffy don't mean he's afeared of water, mebbe he uses it fer a chaser."
I was thinking that there might be a good opportunity for a series of kid's stories about two Pasture Pals, Burro and Goose.... Have a wonderful day!
Not good! We had a door crack the wood where the hinges screw on that way. Someplace, I had that book. There was some great sayings in there. My sister was writing kids books long ago, I should give her that idea.
Beautiful birds singing, that’s a lot of messes 🐁☝️🍀👴🦌❤️🫂💝😆👀🤪
Ha! Yeah, don't want to knock those over!
@@MuskratOutdoors it was supposed to say meeses but autoincorrect took over lol!😂
The background sound, especially at the video start, was delighted to ears. The chorus of birdsong and buzzing bees sounded lovely, creating a paradise-like atmosphere. Thanks for sharing, have a nice day!
Thank you Igor! I sure like it also!
Have a great day ❤
Thank you, you too!
The bee strip seems to be working well! Serves that mouse right for being where he shouldn’t have been!
I think so. I don't think they can get in there now.
Great video buddy I make all of my own baits and lures here in West Virginia and I catch stuff with them i enjoy just messing around with it making my own stuff and whenever you catch something with it that is just icing on the cake.
Exactly! You save some money and get a little more pride out of the catch too. Kind of like tying fishing flies, or reloading bullets.
Good morning Gary have a good day and God bless you and your family ❤
Good Morning!!! Thank you, and same to you and yours!
Thank you for sharing! I have been making my own lures this season and experimenting! Good luck with everything my friend!
Thank you very much! It's kind of fun, ain't it? The things that need preseritives, are important to have them. Glycerine too....outside of that, it's not hard at all. I test mine on my dogs. Put a dab on a bush and let them find it. If they are interested, it will work. If no interest, ad something else to it and tray again.....if the run away.....toss it out!
It's fun to set up a trail camera and make a set with no trap to see what wild critters do too.
When you think about it,lure makers are just making their own . Some day I need to make some of that tail oil, thanks
Exactly. Beaver tail oil is easy, just make sure the jar is vented, sealed from flies, and set it in the sun. It takes awhile, but by trapping season, it should be ready to use.
Good topic Gary, I make my own bait called 911. I use groundhog and road kill rabbit. And it works awesome. I also make a mouse bait. As for a lure I make a beaver caster tail oil..
Sounds good! You know what I'm talking about!!
Good morning! Well, you had my Cindy laughing when you mentioned using your Cindy’s blender for grinding up castor and such as I’ve done the same and encountered the same as you from her. lol. I make my own lures also. After I scrape my beaver off I put all the scrapings into gallon jars and let forment until good and smelly, then I’ll grind up 2 castor and add it to the jar. Works great on canines and cats. By the way, I know Paul ! Spent some time with him when he came to the Wisconsin Trappers convention a couple years back. Great guy !
I do the same thing with those beaver trimmings. It works really well. I haven't met Paul, but I've talked to him a bit on the phone. It would be fun to get together and compare notes!
As a kid I used Hawbakers lure. Worked fine.
I did too. Back then they were some of the only store bought lures you could get. They worked just fine.
I use Night Owl Lures' "Liquid Mouse" and "Liquid Predator" and they are really good!
Some things do work better than others, but really, I think folks overthink it.
Hope you have a good time at the river. Stay dry!
Thanks! We ended up on the mountain instead!
Good Morning from Texas! First year making my own trapping bait, the jury is still out on how the critters like it.
I bet you will find that it works just fine. If you have dogs, test it with them. I'll put a dab on a bush someplace and let them find it. If they show interest, it should work, if they shy away, toss it out. If they want to roll, set your trap back a little farther so you catch them before they can.
@@MuskratOutdoors well I caught a coyote on it this morning, so that’s a plus. I’ve only got to trap the last week or so and very limited at that.
I know a guy that did a prank senior year of school that climbed on the school roof very early and dumped a gallon of home made trapping lure in the HVAC intake then went home and came back to school regular time. Needless to say that trapping lure was nicely spread throughout all the rooms. School was shut down an hour later. I never did get caught. 😂
WOW! NOW THAT"S A GOOD ONE!
We let a couple possums loose in the lunch room....at least we tried to....the principle saw us unzip the bag and leave. He went and zipped it up before they got out.....yeah, we were in a bit of trouble!
Good morning from the mountains of West by God Virginia
Good morning too you too! I was actually born in Virginia,...
I've heard of snake oil salesmen but I've always thought that they were a myth!
Ha! Nope! That was a real thing! I doubt it was sun rendered though!
I like looking up things like... how to make chapstick... lipstick...essential oils etc. Gives ya some great ideas for things like a smear lure or a rub scent. I make lots of this kinda stuff. Ya can even use Elmer's glue in bait and lure making. My favorite lure to make is from buck husks. It's a good early season lure but it smells so good its hilarious to tell the guys at the cabin. "You just said my nuts smell good " 😂
HA! I'd love to see the look on their face! Elmer's Glue? I haven't heard of that. Very interesting!
Hope the fishing trip is good.
We ended up in the mountains instead! He did fish a little, but I didn't make it.
Good morning fine sir 🌻
Good Morning!
Have a great day and see you tomorrow to.😊
Thank you! See Ya Then!
Good morning friend
Good morning!
Good Morning Muskrat, I hope you don't get confused and put beaver tail oil on your flap Jack's. 😅
HA! I wonder what it would taste like? It really doesn't smell too bad....but I think I'll skip the taste testing!
Ground gopher and chopped gopher work well for coyote in dirt whole sets.
They do. I used those one year also.
Gary , do you just skin the tails out , and then cut up the rest and put it in the jars ?The Beaver tails
I like the meat grinder story. I'll pass on the meatloaf or hamburgers at your house😂. Cindy didn't shot ya anyway...Interesting about your trapping lures. I've only made it out of fish years ago when I trapped I m high school years. Take care.🇺🇲🔪🔥🌲
HA! She was not happy! I told her "meat is meat" but she didn't see it that way!! There's a lot of things you can make yourself. Beavertail oil and straight castors are two of the best. Easy too.
love is in the air... lol
Something is anyway!!
Good morning. On the bever tail oil do you keep the lid sealed while it cures?
Yes. There is a small nail hole in the lid covered with electrical tape to vent it, and keep the flies out. It's good stuff. No preservatives needed, not offensive or strong smelling, but the critters love it!
Id imagine that stuff smells like the dead skunk and dead skunk crawled out of
Some are worse than others, but these oils aren't too bad. Fish and rattlesnake are pretty strong and not pleasant, but the beaver tail oil isn't bad at all.....critters love it!
Rancher in Colorado got 1st calf killed by woof confirmed by the carp cops. No big deal he will get reimbursed. Didn't know you can't kill a woof if it's killing your dog or cows. Like that's ever going to happen
That happened here two. Only about two weeks after they let them go, a wolf killed a calf on Gene Hussy's Ranch....and got shot! Gene was a friend of mine, it wasn't him that did it......
There it is. More stanky stuff.
HA! Shore 'nuff!
Good morning...🤮....glad you got bait...
HA! Thanks Amye!
Remind me not to watch you videos during my lunch. 🤮😄
HA! Maybe not!
