Tim, I always love your videos. They’re farm fun between nowadays, but they are always great. I sent your video to a friend of mine named Tim who is a studio guy. Thought you’d get a kick out of knowing that. All good fun always in Nashville.
Something to be said about sensationalism. By the way about your question about Oscar. Politics. We used to have pools like a football pool for Oscar night and the wins were large
Wow Tim. You said you were working on something special. This was very cool and enjoyable. I’ve turned on some family and friends to your channel. Thanks again for your hard work on these videos.
The scene of the Oneders freaking out over hearing their tune on the radio is one of my all time favorite movie moments, ever! The local public radio station here actually used a contemporary jazz piece my wife played flute on as a break tune between segments occasionally and I remember having a similar moment with her in the car the first time we realized what was happening. A thrill! Great that you agree on the merits of the scene from That Thing You Do, Tim. Another great video from you!
That is great! That scene and the talent show are my favorites in the movie. I was in a Vegas casino not too long ago and That thing you do was wafting around from the lounge and everyone gambling was totally rocking out to it. Surreal.

Griffith Park Observatory is such a wonderful building, iconic at this point. Cool tour. Will look forward to a Part 2. Watched a couple of interesting rock documentaries recently including Linda Ronstadt:: The Sound of My Voice and Catching Fire: The Anita Pallenberg Story.
As always great video Tim. I just thought of another rock movie but I don't recall where it was filmed at. Rock N Roll High School with The Ramones. That's a good one.
@@RockessentialTim That's cool bro. It just popped into my head as I was typing my comment so I went ahead and typed it out to you. Speaking of rock, I have a video coming out later in the summer about the Allman Brothers. I live about an hour north of Macon and I have gone down there at least 10-12 times for several months getting location content for my video doc on the Allman Brothers Band. It might even have to be in 2-3 parts. Later this summer I'm hoping.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High would have been a great one to include on your List, One of the best soundtracks ever, Awesome Video Tim hope your well brother
These were great , great rock and roll movies , iconic to this day . Does anyone have the answer, why did Hollywood overlook and snub these movies ? But we still love these movies to this day... Again , Thanks Tim for your great Hollywood videos .
I’ve been following your vlogs for years. Thank you. I left LA and moved to OC in 1990. There is some history here too in Rock and films. Keep rocking.
Thanks for sticking with me all this time! Yeah, I love the OC, I actually lived there for a few months in the 70's when I emigrated from Michigan. I actually just got back from Newport Beach cuz I was filming some stuff for an upcoming Metallica video I'm throwing together. Loved going to Glassell St fro the That Thing You Do vid, I didn't know that area had become such a hipster haven!
@@RockessentialTim that’s awesome. I live in Aliso Viejo, but it’s close ( 3 miles ) to Laguna Beach. A hell of a lot of stories there. Hope you do a vlog there down the road.
Thanks Tim, this was one of your best videos. I just wish it could’ve lasted for 3 hours & you were more in-depth about each location, scenes & actors. But what you shared, I really enjoyed. How about a film of all the different high schools that were used in Hollywood films? I thought for sure when you showed Venice High School, you were going to say “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”, but I was wrong.
Another good one Tim. It's always a pleasure to find a new video from you on a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee and a bit of free time. You're making a lot of people happy. Keep up the good work but don't work too hard! Have a great summer in L.A.
Tim -- absolutely the best 17:04 I've spent all day! Are you sure we aren't "brothers from other mothers?" When you're halfway between L.A. and Palmdale, my man, you have ARRIVED! Just ask FZ -- "Going back home to the Village of the Sun / Out in back of Palmdale where the turkey farmers run..." Thanks as always.
Its funny you mention FZ cuz I had him on my mind the whole time I was out there filming. Vasquez Rocks is right there and it looks like you're on Mars when you drive through it.
Since you mentioned John Marshall HS, Van Halen filmed their "Hot for Teacher" music video there. BTW - the number of movies, tv shows and commercials filmed at JMHS is as long as your arm. Look it up, it's pretty cool.
@@RockessentialTim I'm impressed. The original Disney studios were a few blocks away on Hyperion and Roy and Walt Disney lived a block away on Lyric Ave.
Stacy Keach and CheechnChong all 3 still alive. Amazing. Much of Almost Famous was filmed in Ocean Beach San Diego where I grew up. The Strand Theatre my cousin Dave was the Manager 1974-78. SD Sports Arena right across the street was Tower Records. The establishment shot of the Pacific Ocean. Our was on the left side of Santa Cruz AVENUE. Brought back many memories. Where’s RocknRoll High School. ????That should be our house on the left the only two story house at that time.

It is stunning how some of these movies got ditched by Hollywood especially "Spinal Tap" and "The Big Lebowski", probably 2 of the biggest now "cult or underground" (due to the non-recognition they got) movies ever. I'd have to put "Back To The Future" on a high pedestal as well due to how well it flows and the interesting, fun story it told, not to mention the great performances by the actors. Excellent job once again Tim and I know your talking about movies shot in the LA area so I'll mention another favorite (filmed in Beaufort S. Carolina) that is a solid film with a fantastic sound track but didn't win anything except the Peoples Choice Award at the Toronto Int. Film Festival, and Best Comedy written for the Screen at the Writers Guild of America awards. It did get nominated by the Academy for Best Picture and best supporting actress (Glenn Close) as well as Best screenplay wrtitten for the screen. That film was The Big Chill from 1983. The 2 best music documentaries ever, IMHO, are the original "Woodstock" and "The Last Waltz" both of which Martin Scorsese was heavily involved. Thanks again Tim, great stuff.
The Last Waltz for sure. Funny, I just happened to be mindlessly changing channels yesterday when I came upon the very beginning of what I consider the best Rock n roll movie ever and I spent the next hour and a half enjoying it for the 50th time. Hard Days Night. I will add though, if you dig Rock Docs there's a new 4 part one out on Prime about a Canadian band called The Tragically Hip that is wonderful. Thanks for the comment!
@@RockessentialTim Absolutely agree on Hard days Night (forgot about that one), probably the first Rock Doc but hard to put it in strictly a Rock Doc category due to it being such a fun film with an outlying story built into it (Paul's clean Grampa). Would you consider "Rock Around The Clock" featuring Bill Haley and his Comets as the first Rock Doc?? I don't really think so although I will give it credit as the first Movie built around Rock and Roll. Thanks for the tip on the Hip Doc, will definitely check it out. Tim the King of Cool delivers a cool video about some cool movies & also pointing out how lasting impacts by works of art are appreciated in time! However, it’s often too late as it takes a while to sink in with the general public as institutions & the media don’t appreciate them as these smaller “art” movies don’t have the mega super funded structures behind them:(. They survive & get recognized for their artistic achievement & vision only in time👏🏼📺👏🏼📺👏🏼📺👏🏼
Tim I loved all of this rock movie history. Hard to believe so many of those films did not even get a Oscar nomination. I don't know how but I missed your last 3 videos. I am catching up now. Hope you are doing well
Thanks, all is good wid me. I had back surgery a couple weeks ago and am recovering quite well although I can't even bend over to tie my shoes at this point. I guess my dream of a second career in metal detecting is pretty much over! Hope you are good. Going to Alpena in September for a wedding....
I hope you are getting around ok after your surgery. That is never fun. Metal detecting takes its toll on backs and knees. Some days I can really feel it. I haven't been out much lately, it has been too hot and humid. Enjoy your trip to Alpena, the weather at that time of year should be ideal. Take care
Another bullseye upload. I recently remixed my subscription list on here from 500 + down to 50? or something. If I had to only have two it would be this one, Tim, and good ol' Derek over at Vice Grip Garage. I just want to say that.
Love your vids- just joined. How about some of the Cielo Drive locations where Manson tried to get a record deal out of Terry Melcher etc- and the beach boy ties to Manson? Too morbid maybe but still it’s part of music scene history.
I was up there once doing a piece on Nine Inch Nails. Creepy doesn't even begin to describe the vibe there but I will prolly revisit one of these days. Thanks for the idea and the sub.
Here’s another filming location, Pulp Fiction when Butch(Bruce Willis) throws the fight. The front marquee of the fight arena was filmned on Raymond Ave., just above Holly St. it was formally Perkins Palace. Butch throws the fight, leaves by jumping into a taxi it speeds around the corner in the background you see the fight arena marquee. Pulp Fiction is a classic movie easily in the top 25 greatest movies of all time IMHO….✌(Also The Player filmned in South Pasadena but that’s for next time) 👍
Thanks for sharing the Big Lebowski location...one of my favorite movie Hard work Tim!🇨🇵 Julianne moore's scene in her appartement seems to be located on Broadway Downtown ? Just in front of the Los Angeles Theater...or located in studio? Thx👍
Thanks! I really don't know where any of the other Lebowski locations are other than the bowling alley on Santa Monica Blvd that was torn down years ago. In my opinion a completely flawless movie. Not a frame out of place. Cheers!
I’m going to have to watch That Thing You Do again it’s been a while. I thought Oneders was pronounced Wonders? The furniture store is by Orange Circle
Seeing that Cheech and Chong scene makes me sick, now. I had a single flek of Ajax touch my toothbrush. I didnt think anything of it, and used ot after a quick rinse. I had this searing chemical taste in my mouth for a month. Anyways, let that be a warning. This was awesome to see how the places have changed over time. Thanks!
Most of these movies were hits -- not "hated." Even low-budget indie-style movies like "Spinal Tap" (Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest) and "That Thing You Do!" (Tom Hanks) were modest critical and popular successes from the start, and achieved even more popularity on home video. "Big Lebowski" (basically a Miramax-type feature released through Universal) grossed $50 million on a $15 million budget. Certainly "Pulp Fiction" wasn't hated in Hollywood. For the next 20 years we saw an endless parade of pseudo-Tarantinos trying to imitate its success.
None were deemed good enough for major awards at the time. Pulp Fiction should have walked away with the Oscars but Hollywood gave everything to Forest Gump. I'm not saying Gump was a bad movie, it was just a paint by the numbers movie. The Big Lebowski? Nothing. And on and on. Maybe hate us to strong a word and I will say that "A Star Is Born" got a deserved best song Oscar but for the most part these movies were ignored at first except for the part that they made lots of money for the producers and film companies.
@@RockessentialTim I'm just saying that not getting an Oscar nomination (from a very conservative, elitist institution with a poor record of recognizing the most influential or enduring movies of their time) isn't evidence of "hate." More like myopia. Even when the Academy belatedly catches up to and honors important or revolutionary artists, they usually do it only in retrospect -- bestowing awards on filmmakers for lesser movies a few years after they realize they should have recognized them for the better work they did before. It's kinda like the Grammies. They're basically a joke.
Another wonderful and unappreciated movie was "Sing Street". I think it got a go!den globe nod but it was so good and ignored by Oscars. Did you see? If not give it a look. Its song " Drive it like you sto!e it" as good ad that thing you do
Set in 1985 Dublin. Directed and co written by John Candy. Premiered Sundance in January2016 , us release April.2016. Lions gate and Weinstein. Did not win go!den globe and Oscars ignored totally

"Drivin mah twuck on da lonely dirt woad, wid mah dawg in bak, gunna seez mah girl. Lost mah hat n had ta goez bak ta Nashville." "Me getz bak ta da farm and Hey Ned! Get orff ya dang sista! It'z mah turn!"
True, ain't no end of stories in Tennessee. Not much rock but a whole lotta roll.😀
💯💯
The Rebel Without a Cause scene, you can see a pole behind the telescope. If you look over that wall today, the bottom of it is still there.
COol. I will check that out, I go there fairly regularly. Thanks!
You really have a knack for these tours, Tim! 🎶😊
Tanks!
Thanks! Tim 🎥
Yer welcome!
👍👍👍
Another great video thanks
Thanks, Chris.
Rock'n'Roll The longest lasting fad I think, that ever existed on this planet earth since that horseless carriage thing broke on the scene !!! Chris Canada , Just an observation
BTTF was my fav movie till Pulp Fiction came along. Just watched Lebowski the other night. Love the view from Griffith Park. Another very eloquent & researched presentation - thanks Tim!
Right on. BTW: Which movie is BTTF?
@@RockessentialTim Back To The Future!😄
I am an idiot!
@@RockessentialTim incorrect. You're doing great! Would love to see more collaboration and interview/walks. i wonder if this Justin Root guy would be up for a collab: ruclips.net/video/-kVK1FmzXgs/видео.html
They survive & get recognized for their artistic achievement & vision only in time👏🏼📺👏🏼📺👏🏼📺👏🏼
Well said! Especially the part about the king of something or other :)
Excellent. Thanks, Tim!
My pleasure!
I love that hearing that I'm in the mix with Derek. Best comment of the day. Thanks!
@@RockessentialTim Plain ol' simple truth has to suffice on this ocassion... ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
GRIPPING WATCH. GREAT PRESENTATION. THANK YOU.
Loved making this one, thanks!
Rebel without a cause. The movie that portrayed the loss of innocence for most teenagers which many believed was real then it became reality.
Have you done one on music video locations?
Not as of yet.
Pulp Fiction is a classic movie easily in the top 25 greatest movies of all time IMHO….✌(Also The Player filmned in South Pasadena but that’s for next time) 👍
Fuckin brilliant Tim ,thanks ...Rock n Roll will never die...even in the movies(or maybe in spite of Hollywood)
Right on, thanks. Rock n Roll will never die but me thinks it maybe needs a bucket of ice water thrown in its face to wake it up!
The academy wishes they were as cool as rockers are.
They have their heads up their...well you know what I mean.
@@RockessentialTim Yes I know what you mean. I've met more than one person in my life who answers to that description.
Very interesting thanks 🤘🏼🎸
Thanks for sharing the Big Lebowski location...one of my favorite movie
Hard work Tim!🇨🇵
Julianne moore's scene in her appartement seems to be located on Broadway Downtown ?
Just in front of the Los Angeles Theater...or located in studio?
Thx👍
Thanks! I really don't know where any of the other Lebowski locations are other than the bowling alley on Santa Monica Blvd that was torn down years ago. In my opinion a completely flawless movie. Not a frame out of place. Cheers!
@@RockessentialTim Thanks for answering 👍
Very cool and interesting..
Right on.
That thing you do is my favorite rnr movie 😊
My fave is still Hard Days Night but I put That Thing up there with Jailhouse Rock for sure.
Tim, you are the are coming
Thanks for the video!
Yer Welcome!
I was literally at the Cheech and Chong location yesterday. Small world.
It is a cool little part of town.
@@RockessentialTim yeah, I dig walking there 😎
Have you been to Abby San Encino on Arroyo Glen in HP?
@@RockessentialTim not yet. Looks cool for Halloween. I live at the Cecil, so I like to wall around away from downtown.
It was the "Fish Under The Sea" dance, not "Enchantment Under The Sea!" ;-)
I appreciate your acumen but Um... It was def The Enchantment Under The Sea Dance.
I’m going to have to watch That Thing You Do again it’s been a while. I thought Oneders was pronounced Wonders? The furniture store is by Orange Circle
The running joke in the movie is everyone pronounces it O-needers.
I mean mispronounces it Oh-needers.
Like I said, it’s been a LONG time since I saw it. It’s definitely time.

Stillwater was an actual band
Seeing that Cheech and Chong scene makes me sick, now. I had a single flek of Ajax touch my toothbrush. I didnt think anything of it, and used ot after a quick rinse. I had this searing chemical taste in my mouth for a month.
Anyways, let that be a warning. This was awesome to see how the places have changed over time. Thanks!
EEww. The thought of it for real actually makes me gag too.
you forgot rock and roll high school, with the ramones! Not the best movie, but they had a lot of locations filmed in LA and surrounding areas!
I love the Ramones but honestly, that was an awful movie.
Why does Hollywood do anything? I worked there for many years and never understood it
Ha! I worked there my entire career and I'll tell you why Hollywood does it. Money. Period.
@RockessentialTim uhhhh, that's why any business, city, entity, "does it",
@@chuckfan1 Not the real estate Hollywood but the movie making Hollywood---you know the one that touts itself as making movies for art's sake.
Tim, what's your opinion on Natalie Woods's climactic drowning? Was it an accident, or was it murder?
I have no opinion on it.
Tim see Lyristoric/ What “ hotel California” by the Eagles is all about.
Tim has covered it extensively. Go to Videos and "Play all"
Most of these movies were hits -- not "hated." Even low-budget indie-style movies like "Spinal Tap" (Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest) and "That Thing You Do!" (Tom Hanks) were modest critical and popular successes from the start, and achieved even more popularity on home video.
Rock and Roll High School?
Part 2?
The Creedence song is Lookin Out My Back Door. Out My Back Door sounds a little gross. Just sayin.
Another wonderful and unappreciated movie was "Sing Street". I think it got a go!den globe nod but it was so good and ignored by Oscars. Did you see? If not give it a look. Its song " Drive it like you sto!e it" as good ad that thing you do
I haven't seen it but I will check it out. Do you know where it was filmed?
Set in 1985 Dublin. Directed and co written by John Candy. Premiered Sundance in January2016 , us release April.2016. Lions gate and Weinstein. Did not win go!den globe and Oscars ignored totally
John Carney, he said it was a love letter to.his youth
