Hello Friends,
This is the third installment of my "Sailing Alone" series of long format films that document my solo ocean passages.
On this episode I say good by to Bora Bora and French Polynesia and make way for American Samoa, a passage of 1110nm. This passage was filled with rowdy following seas, high winds and a few moments of drama that really kept me on my toes.

Brother, YOU are a champion. I hope to live that life someday as well. i have lived on two sailboats but were mostly marina pets. I want to be out on the open sea. Just so you know, when days are bad and things are rough, you are a champion to people like me who love and appreciate what you are doing. cheers bud. If you are ever in Washington state and need something, let me know and i'll run out to the coast and deliver. Fair winds and following seas brother.
I love that you don't put music over your videos. I feel like the silence, and the ambience of wherever you are is way more honest. I appreciate that kinda thing!
Oh ya ! Me also , it’s very raw and very immersive.
@@daffymore This is the best compliment, music that's there but so well integrated we don't notice it.
The flip side of James is Gunboat videos. If I ever got rich enough to buy a Gunboat I think I'd name it, "Hit Mute!" Who goes sailing and when the wind picks up says, "Hey, let's play some loud canned muzak!"
agree. very natural and real.
I’d put pirates of the caribbean music over it 😂 i know just NO
Ppp
What an incredible tale! Thank you for calmly capturing and explaining everything, even in the worst situations! I’m not a sailor, your videos came to me via the YT algorithm but I have to say your videos are absolutely inspiring and I look forward to every upload! May your onward travels be safe and fulfilling!
Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Another GREAT sailing crossing and journey James!
And your ships log monologue really was thoughtful, original, wise and inspiring, thank you for sharing sir!
Thank you 🙏🏻
@@SailorJames Welcome! I've been somewhat having an SV Triteia binge watch lately since coming across your story, which really is a great story and journeys! Also just to add that it was me who sent you a message last week re. if you drop in to Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast (of which Noosa is a part) I would be happy to show you both some of the local 'jewels'.
Btw I have a small youtube channel documenting Mistress' build journeys and we are close to finally getting her in the water,.. to then start her sailing adventures,.. 🙂⛵
Wow…gawd that was a little excitement ..yeah? The video of the waves make them appear HUGE..and if you say it doesn’t do it justice..holy crap! That was some serious rocking. I would be puking and terrified at the same time. You were a beast fixing that rail! Don’t know anything about sailing but love watching your journey! Thanks for sharing James!
Yeah the seas where raging on that passage
Epilogue was … spot on. Well done Captain.
Fantastic James, I missed this, the closing Narrative was Profound ❤
This is one of my favorite passage films
The way you dealt with the ingress of water was very impressive, you showed 'presence of mind' at all times, fantastic
Woooo! Was stoked for this to come out. Watching now
Dang! Still reflecting with wonder on this passage film. First off, high five! Well done! Impressive problem solving underway. Second, your ships log monologue at the end is lyrical, beautiful, a great poem, thanks for sharing! Third, was that a Minney's t-shirt? LoL Wahoo! Fair winds, happy sails!
Very nice video, dear James, by the way you keep calm in spite of the daily problems of a tipic solo navigation, by the way you put the cameras in the right position to take good angles takes....
In all the time we enjoy the sense of natural enviroment, without "overacting"...
This is the first video I have seen of you, so now I have a lot of videos to watch...
Good winds and wings...
He is a great sailor without question.
Really enjoyed your voyage to American Somoa. Lots of large waves and rolling! So relieved for you that the water dump and the gooseneck on the boom didn't cause major problems.
Had to be a good omen to see the White Tailed Tropic Bird and the bird cloud formation at the same time. How could that be a coincidence.
Can't wait to see American Samoa in youe next post. Happy Sails Sailor James.
your dissertation at the end was incredible. So good, thank you.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great video James! Amazing job dealing with the dislocated boom while underway! Glad you were able to get it fixed fairly quickly (compared to the rudder incident in the Hawaiian crossing) and continue the passage, as planned. There were some epic sunrises/sunsets in this one, tho I'm sure they in no way represented the majesty of being there in-person. Also, I really enjoyed the reading of the ship's log at the end; it reminded me of the narration in one of my all-time favorite movies (A River Runs Through It). I especially liked the greater lesson of intention and patience that you pointed out. Thank you for sharing. May fair winds continue to be with you, my friend!🌬⛵
Thanks for watching and the thoughtful comment 🙏🏻
Epic video as always James !
well done James, very well done.
I love sailboat content keep making move videos
How awesome I have family there safe travels
I have been with you since you bought the boat!
It’s been a wild ride
really beautiful video mate. Thoroughly enjoyed it : )
thank you and your videos.M
Lmao. Like your sense of humor and calmness
James!!!! You did not sail from Bora Bora alone. You took all of us with you!! Your never alone with your you tube family Brother. So A Better title would be sailing from Bora Bora single handed. Your not alone.
That’s a wonderfully kind sentiment 🙏🏻 but as the person who did all of the night watches alone and tackled all the problems of the passage by myself, the title holds true 😃👍🏻
@@SailorJames I understand. You are feeling alone. To me, the word "alone" makes it sound sort of pathetic like you don't have a choice....like "woe is me I'm all alone". But hey, If "Alone" floats your boat Then that"s the best choice of words. I love your videos.
I have to agree with some of the others here, GREAT vid and even better, that the music is at a minimum and of the music you chose is appropriate. Others that overpower their vids with music I just turn off. I have just Subbed and look forward to more videos from you and I know it's a big ask but I am glad you don't sugarcoat the issues at sea. This makes the video all the more interesting and has one wanting more. That being said the hour-long video is a great length IMHO and I look forward to more/ Thank you
Good stuff James.... Why don't you fish.... Yeah that didn't look like fun
I do fish when the seas are calm, I even mention it on this video. When the seas are rough it would be a nightmare to stop the boat, pull the fish in with the boat going crazy, clean the fish and then get to sailing again, all solo. Not worth the trouble. And I don’t have any interest in taking things I don’t “need” I was well stocked with food
Heavy sways: i think you are paying a huge penalty for the extra 5 windows anddoubld layer fiberglass canopy above your companionway. I see a liquid cooled outboard mounted high above the waterline. I have an air cooled Tomking 4 cycle TK144FC outboard with a hand finished aluminum prop. It weighs 23 LBS and was easily modified to troll low. The fuel can be poured back in a can in a minute, so no smells. My landlubber 100 watt solar panels are 3 X 4, so I can imagine how easy it is to break skinny long ones on a boat. Ideally, boat panels should be 50 watts, but there seems to be a retail penalty.
You have obviously never been sailing in the trade winds if you think my boats motion is due to my hard dodger
@@SailorJames round hull slim keel furling gear high outboard. It does seem to be a missile.
Love your videos dude, what an awesome adventure youre on 🤘.
What did the little yellow flag mean you raised on day 11?, i know naff all about sailing btw 😆
when you sail into a new country you have to fly the "Q" flag (yellow/quarantine) on your starboard spreader, telling customs that you have not cleared in and that your ship is free of disease. Once you have cleared in you take down that flag and replace it with flag of the country you are visiting.
James' camera's name is Wilson
Congratulations you are 4000th person to make a reference to “Wilson”
❤
Days on end passage. Ever hallucinate?
Not visual hallucinations but plenty of aural hallucinations on all passages
Really enjoy watching you live your dream James. A true inspiration! Be safe friend
The jazz was killer! I have to say, your passages are so awesome! I love that when the shift hits fan, you have the forethought to start rolling the camera! Thank you so much for that. I know your heart must have been beating a mile a minute each time, but taking us with you while you work the problem is amazing!
Good Cap'n James, another fantastic video. There is much value in what you give us, thank you. The angles were great, I especially loved the view from close to the bow looking to the stern with the cockpit in frame. The ending ships log was also great. Stay safe and try to relax out there!
My family lived in American Samoa when I was a young boy. A few years ago, my brother and I took our father back to the island for his final visit. It’s such an incredible place, with absolutely wonderful people, and I’m so excited to experience it once again, but through your lens. Your spirit for adventure inspires me. Thanks!
When I was a kid your videos would have been a whole year of National Geographic specials on national TV.
I don't know if you will see this or not, but I'm proud of you, to go through what you did at the start of this journey and sail on like a champ, says a lot about who you are. I wish you nothing but the best and I will continue watching to the end.
Your calm logical problem solving in the middle of the night on a rocking deck is impressive!
On a depressing Sunday up in Canada, this was a great escape!!! Thank you!!!
James! You have really excelled yourself with this EPIC video! Loved, loved, loved it! Those of us who live aboard and sail, really enjoy the true reality of sailing! We admire the fact you are solo on this voyage, know and understand the difficulties you are overcoming alone. It is amazing that you managed to film two really scary emergencies, when the majority of us would be panicking and forget to film the reality of that! Loved the jazzy ‘Christian Williamson’ type music too! Very classy! The summit of this whole video for me though, was your beautifully written articulate epilogue! The summary of what it actually feels like to be at sea, emotionally, physically, visually! Your words were like poetry. Certainly, they should be recorded as all good historical tales are. I look forward to reading the book. Well done Captain! Mission accomplished. ❤
Thank you 🙏🏻 yeah it’s no small feat to film emergencies when you are solo but I try and do my best. Thanks for the kind comment
Dude! Thank you so much! This episode nails it, I was on the tip of my chair the whole episode. When it got hectic you told yourself to stay calm. That’s exactly what I would do😂. Again thank you for taking us with you. 🙏
To verbalize “stay calm”. Yes, totally agree.
Put the distance in the thumbnail. Better views.
Might try that with the passage to NZ film… thanks for the suggestion
Man that was one epic sail solo 😎
He has MASSIVE brass balls. Jesus.
@@stankythecat6735 id reckon! He handles it all like a boss!!! Great job that's for sure 👌
James u are incredible, the courage and your enthusiasm is fascinating, safe travels my friend
Probably one of your best films yet. The work you put into the edit and production is well appreciated. Thanks James. 😎
These hour long episodes are everythingggggg 🥰
Great film making James! . Love the pacing of the edit and the choice of music really helps convey the emotion and drama. Also the horizon leveling on the go pro is pretty amazing. Really gives the sense of the extreme motion and size of the waves while keeping the footage watchable.
Yeah the GoPro leveling is a total game changer for filming at sea and showing the real motion
Note to self. Never say "all is good" while sailing. 😁
I been waiting for this, I love these sailing videos. Being from Iowa ive never had a chance to sail, but it would be something awesome to experience. Way to go man, keep the videos coming!
A beautiful film James, thank you. I loved your inspiring monologue at the end. Worthy of Moitissier. I feel that there's a good book in you waiting to be written one day. I know I'd read it!
Thank you so much for producing this long video James and taking us with you and somehow being able to kind of get the feeling of how it is like making a 1110 nm crossing. I love your raw productions. I have an old long keel 28 foot and dreaming of ocean crossings. Also the reason that I love following you mostly, instead of large boats carrying all the kind of fancy electronic devices and other stuff on board. Always looking forward to your next video.
...,HAVE U HEARD THE LINE. BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES ,Thwy
That was a very nice and heartfelt thank you to your followers. The world is full of good people and you certainly are one of them. I appreciate you taking us along on this journey. Its great to get a small dose of what a solo passage feels like and you capture it for us from the comfort of our living rooms. Well done brother.
Music choice and also when and when not to put music was spot on this episode. Love it. Keep sailing and making these. Super inspiring and relaxing to watch. Stay safe out there!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Cheers, James. Nothing but spectacular. Dearly looking forward to seeing more from you.
Fantastic 🙂
What an enjoyable hour - and what a great 'epilogue' 😀
Thank-you so much for sharing 👍
"It's impossible to film waves." How do I know other sailing RUclipsrs aren't watching your channel James? They aren't gimbaling/gyroing their camera like you do. You do a better job of conveying what it's like to be at sea than anyone else. (Looks just like it does from my kayak.) I would think they'd have learned from you by now.
And yes we support you and what you are accomplishing. Every milestone you reach, every hurdle you overcome, every time you successfully anchor in someplace new and distant. Terrific videos, really captures what it's like.
I noticed that too! I thought that it was weird that the camera didnt move with the boat. I thought to myself that there must be someone else on the boat filming him. Never thought that he had the camera on a gimbal.
Yes as an aspiring liveaboard I really appreciate the raw nature of James channel. The rich folks on their tris and cats don't have anything on this style of video.
James, I've followed you since that episode you lost the rudder mid ocean. This is another memorable episode. Thank you for sharing it with us. Wwlee, Singapore
🙏🏻
@@SailorJamesvicariously through sailor James so awesome
@@mischelle9530 Tool referance....nice
I'm amazed by it all, the sailing, cameras, music, everything. You are an amazing person and it's great to have the opportunity to get a glimpse of your journeys thanks. ⛵💙🌊
Your adventures continue to inspire…❤
Brother is living life with full lungs. I wish you to find someone special and to sail it together. Loneliness is ok sometimes and i know that you had a break-up but hey life moves on. I am wishing you find someone like you to sail with. God speed brother, Greetings from a Serbian fan :)
James, I love how you stand amidst your rig feeling, listening, sensing and understanding exactly what shs doing. It's a wonderful partnership, you and her, your absolute trusted friend and willing extension of your spirit!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Nice video, brother! You write very well. Is there a book or three in you? I’d read it. Thanks!
Many books on the way
@@SailorJames i look forward to reading them!
All the best for what's ahead, really looking forward to all that happens in the future. xx Take care xx
Hey James, this has been a simply superb film!! I enjoyed every second and could probably watch even more such was the fascination and mystique of what you're doing and the whole atmosphere of the film. You captured it so well and allowed me to be in the moment, thank you! The soundtrack to this film was absolutely spot on point that just added more to the imagination of being on the ocean waves and the captains log at the very end to finish off the film was so appropriate and a very nice thing to do for your viewers. Take care out there James, safe travels and fair winds brother....Neil.
Agreed 100% on the soundtrack. He has used that jazzy laid back clarinet stuff a few times now and I just love it. His trip up that river on his dinghy had that playing in the background and was just such a great vibe.
Respects to you James! Please keep us with you on your journey!
May god keep you safe! 🙏😘
What is the music and the band please? Or did you generate it?... Good mix with your video. Well done...
All music is from a music service I pay for so not real bands
@@SailorJames Thanks for the answer. Do you play a musical instrument? Im a lifetime violinist (50 years playing), picked up guitar and harmonica since covid. Just do harmonica when Im walking. It is a cool instrument to play when walking and it goes right back in your pocket ( or in the case on your belt).
22:38 These are words that will save your life at sea. Any new sailors reading this need to take this to heart. Panic slows response time through useless exertion and that, when in a dire situation, can prove to be fatal. Stay calm, because the situation has already occurred and there is no going back. You can only look ahead with a sound mind and act as needed to remedy the problem. PANIC CAN KILL!
Appreciate the production value you add to your story, it truly flows like a documentary.
Your channel is so inspiring. If you want to sail to Okinawa, I’d be happy to show you around the island 🤙🏻
Brah that island looks amazing and the sense of community looks very tight!
Everybody working and moving there bodies !
Absolutely amazing brother.....thank you for sharing !!!.
Fair wind's brother.
Living the dream my friend
I thought the tuna canneries closed down. They smelled horrible when I was there 15 years ago. I also heard about the terrible holding. Great passage, James!!!
Man, I need to know what camera you use and how it's always stabilized to the horizon?
GoPro hero 9 with the horizon leveling setting on
@@SailorJames Awesome, thanks mate!
Just found your channel thru dumb luck! I Love it! I'm retired Navy and have been to several places you have!
Questions: How did your brother warn ya about the ship? What kind of communication do ya have? Internet? Starlink???
Also... what were the orange flag, and another one, tha ya put up at the end of the video pulling into an atoll, French Polynesia!?
Or you could say,"The anchor dragged and dragged and dragged." - an FYI from a lowly subscriber who loves seeing real low tech sailing videos- almost as much as actually sailing myself.
친구..hi~
I like you video.. just remind me of my grandpa and I was sailing Islands to island, was a homemade canoe. You should go visit my island call Palau.. it a very beautiful island. Not much people visit... We have sand that is so fine it's like lotion you put on skin, Jellyfish lake that doesn't stink you.. and many more....!
Really do like your videos also do like the Spimnaker on your sailing boat love the colours.
I take back my comment on the music. Fresh start.
Wow! Incredible and I don't know how the heck you stay so calm. Brilliant videos and I meant no bad will chirping on about your background music. Respect to you sir
If you saw a white tailed tropic bird it 127 miles from Tutuila It was most likely nesting on rose atoll, and not to be that guy but there are 3 manua islands, ,Ofu Tau and olosega.
They are a nice set of islands, i hope you didnt mind the Us customs in American Samoa, they can be a total power tripping pain in the arse, everything in American Samoa has an (Authority) in its title, American Samoa Power Authority, American Samoa Customs Authority and so on
Hi James, thank you for the many videos i have now watched, through them I came to know you as a really nice person. Congratulations on your passage to American Samoa, and what a passage it was! You really had some narly moments there! But as usual nothing you couldn't overcome... Your Logbook entry was epic and got me a bit emotional.... Keep up the good work bro!! A small but well meant contribution and greetings from Italy.
Congrats on the passage James, you have a hearty Boat and overcame issues as they arose. really enjoyed the sail.
What I the red square thing on ur stern. Very peaceful I bet. Although I would be freaking out cause I know nothing about sailing or open sea travel.
I will be asleep .. time difference. But It will be the perfect thing to watch while having my morning coffee. Fair winds James.
I love the music selection for Sewing while sailing demo. I always wonder about running across lost shipping containers floating in the sea?
I don't know you but I'm proud of you! Great job living your dreams. Inspirirng 👏
Hey James, what was the music that was playing while you were out repairing the sail?(at around 30:19)
You have great taste in music.
Just wondering why you don’t catch more fish and eat some limes or lemons I’m a limey myself so … you don’t want scurvy matey 🤟🤪
Great Movie James. Excellent music and placement gave a great vibe. Had my attention the whole time.
Great video! I'm a fan. May the fickle fingers of fate always smile on you James!
Enjoy your videos a lot. You have such an in depth, sensitive and humble spirit, and feels very strongly how important this voyage is for you, how strongly you resonate with the boat, with the ocean. It is rare to see, kindof a Moitissier's deep involvement with all his soul and physics, you seem to have almost the same.
I used to watch all over again and again the movie of canadian sailor Yves Gelinas in his Alberg30, feel I am re-living those moments and feelings with you.
Makes me so happy to see it happening. Thank you for all the work you put into the video making, it is an immense work, and such a beautiful outcome.
Great vid mate, but the way your camera sways back and forth whilst you were in the galley made me sea sick 😂
You inspire many people, sir. God's speed to you.
I notice you haven't picked up any fine sailing companions upon your future travels🤔
What a way to pull it all together in the end. A timeless message that we can all apply to our lives.
Your last job was at the renaissance fair as the guy on the pendulum thing doing tricks huh 😘
Excellent score, mellow jazz piano:-) 🎹
Absolutely love the transition to sailing......finally free !!!.
