i managed to get my hands on one of these, its potential is limitless with no skill ceiling. absolutely game changing for electronic music.
this is a masterpiece of musical innovation that can't be beat.
you have things like the seaboard, which is like an sr-71 of midi keyboards. this is like a UFO that can travel quite literally to another dimension. there is just nothing like it, it is absolutely a hyperspace jump into the future no one could have seen coming. owning one of these is like being part of an exclusive, elite club. its like owning a hypercar, or a yacht; everyone wants to see it and touch it. you can even change the color scheme to your liking for a custom feel.
it is well built, geniusly designed, can be played in multiple postures (desk/strap) and has many configuration options, it even has a step sequencer.
and best of all, there is no limit to what it can interface with. it works with every software synth just like a standard keyboard. but SWAM instruments are now the future. Linn has made history here.
soon, in the future, kids will not want piano lessons anymore. they will want linnstrument lessons. you mark my words, everyone in the millennial generation will have one of these in their home one day. the only thing it needs is a price adjustment so everyone in the world can afford it without compromising on the quality, but i was more than willing to put myself in a little bit of debt to own this miraclework that looks and feels like a million bucks.
my family believes my interest in electronic music is a pipe dream and will do anything to stop me from making electronic music. they are collectively conspiring against me to the point where i actually have just taken up a new job so i can move out and not let them dictate what i should and should not do.
i dont care how long it takes or what it costs, i have fallen in love and will spend the rest of my life adoring this thing whether i ever learn to play it well or not. even just mashing the naturals makes me feel like a magician. anyone can play it, but its so versatile i can tell it will take me years to master. this is all i ever dreamed and more in a controller. its more than just that, it is truly a new instrument in itself that can transform your input into anything in the audible spectrum.
my setup is my laptop, a pair of headphones, and a linnstrument. the rest is all software, the second i start getting paychecks im getting full FL studio (loyal for 15 years of using trial over an over never being able to export anything), NI and X-fer products, SWAMs, all together it is the most powerful tool in existence for electronic musicians who like to humanize things instead of using automation on every freaking sound.
i love it, and it will probably take me a couple years to pay it off but i have no regret. it is so worth it. it is perfect.

I love how nerdy and brilliant this is. I am a professional pianist and piano technician. I also play cello and guitar and bandoneon and have recently become obsessed with electronic sounds. This is truly a genius idea. Amazing idea and execution Roger Linn. Excellent work. I have to admit though, the Logic sounds are uninspiring. I'm not interested in reproducing acoustic instruments electronically but in using a great controller like this to make various synths really come alive. I'm talking about analog synthesis, frequency modulation synthesis, sample based synthesis, physical modeling synthesis. Of course I'm not against synthesis being used to emulate acoustic sounds but I think that the use of electronic means to make music only maintains its own sound world when it has a uniquely electronic signature (an unexpected tone or timbre that sounds particularly "electronic"). My feeling is that this an amazing instrument, not because "oh man we don't acoustic instruments anymore."

    • @rogerlinndesign
      @rogerlinndesign  9 лет назад +3

      +Jonathan Kotulski
Hi Jonathan. I agree and I personally find synthesis more interesting. This introduction video has more traditional sounds because generally people who are seeing LinnStrument for the first time seem to be more impressed with seeing LinnStrument being played while hearing traditional acoustic instrument sounds. But there are other videos that use synthesis on my site, www.rogerlinndesign.com. My new favorite is "LinnStrument 3-Part Pitch Slides", which uses FM from Madrona Labs' Aalto synth.

Buying one of these today. I think this is one of those times where the "evil marketing department" may have been necessary, because it feels like something as innovative as this has flown under the radar. It would be like if someone invented the keyboard and everyone just said "I don't see the point" and ignored it.

It's the one thing that separates those who are full of it from those who actually care. Businesses that wouldn't buy their own things and wouldn't personally associate with it should not be supported by anyone. Roger should always remind us of this simple but very natural rule.

Thanks for your interest in LinnStrument. Of course any instrument requires you to learn how to play it and LinnStrument is no exception. The advantage of LinnStrument is that it's far more flexible and easy to learn than other instruments. It's better than a piano keyboard for the reasons listed here:
      www.rogerlinndesign.com/piano-problems.html
And it's better than any acoustic instruments because 1) it's both polyphonic and expressive in 3 dimensions, 2) it corrects your pitch error without affecting your vibrato and pitch slides, and 3) has its note pads optimized for the spacing of human fingers.
There's a new video on my site (www.rogerlinndesign.com/linnstrument.html) that gives a better overview of what it can do.
I honestly think that in 50 years, most people will be playing LinnStrument or something that has the same note arrangement and 3D control. The MIDI keyboard is toast. :)

Thank you for you very kind compliment. Yes, LinnStrument has velocity and release velocity. You can learn everything about it at www.rogerlinndesign.com.

@@rogerlinndesign It's amazing to me that I got a reply from Roger Linn to be honest. I like what you said on another comment about opening up possibilities for modulating synths, but I respectfully disagree with the poster's idea that this is not interesting for controlling 'real' instruments (sampled or virtualised). If you get a chance, have a look at the work of a chap who goes as Quilcom. He's done some pretty neat virtual acoustic VSTi's (check out his didgeridoo, and Rank, his pope organ) as well as some rather novel synths and effects. A couple worth noting; Mystery, good for evolving pads, and 4DS, a delay playground with an innovative routing matrix. My point being that what we need is a groundbreaking controller, yes for synths, but also to unlock these huge orchestral libraries, and also the emerging virtual acoustic possibilities. Also I use about 5 midi devices to control my DAW, but I can honestly see the potential for this to replace all of them. Especially since you took the exciting step of making the OS open source. It makes me think of the pIanoforte replacing the harpsichord. It's the same really, totally driven by the need for deeper expression. I can't believe I didn't know about these, you can count on seeing me on your forum as a customer, see you there :)

Thanks. The new Push has a different focus, more for beatmakers and simple play and less on traditional musical elements. I think they did a very good job, and it will introduce many players to the idea of expressive control and legitimize it, effectively raising demand for LinnStrument. Note that LinnStrument 128 has twice the pads for only $100 more.
