For those that have never had to re-soften brown sugar placing the piece of sliced bread into the container is a miracle maker! Trust me on this one and try it yourself. A ‘brick’ of brown sugar will be pliable within a couple of days.

Just store white sugar and molasses as these store indefinitely and make your own brown sugar when you need it. Less molasses yields light brown and more molasses makes dark brown sugars.

I don't store black eyed peas any more. I just don't like them very much. I'll eat them if starving, but why not just add other types of beans? I added Great Northerns to make soup, as well as some canned pintos so I won't have to soak and boil them. We have been using that powdered cheese blend a lot lately to make sauce for vegetables, it's delicious. I am so excited that my bread machine has arrived! Today, I made a trek to town and bought all the ingredients I need to make pumpernickel! That will busy me while I incubate my sourdough starter, which I've never done.

i have Yeast in sealed packets that is over 7 years old that past the Still Active Test. I guess once Yeast is opened like many other food items it has a short shelf life. Yeast Test: Proof your yeast to find out if it's still active by adding 1 teaspoon of sugar and 2 1/4 teaspoons of yeast (one envelope) to 1/4 cup of warm water. Then, wait 10 minutes. If the mixture bubbles and develops a yeasty aroma, the yeast is still good.

Good info! I'm going to look into a bread machines🙂.
White rice, dry lentils, dried beans, pasta, oat berries (for oatmeal & flour) and pop corn (for corn flour) are probably the main foods in my long term 'forever food' pantry. I also like dehydrated veggies and powdered eggs but they can be expensive and not necessarily 'forever foods'. Powdered milk and plain instant potatoes also seem to store well but aren't forever foods either. I look at our ancient ancestors for the most successful long term storage candidates.

I use a bread machine , love it. I store long term and short term food. Some foods are store bought but not many as it is much more cost effective to make what you need from scratch and the chemicals added to the processed food just not something I want in my body. I wont can hamburger again it tastes like dog food to me, but I do store freeze dried cooked burger, raw burger as well as raw premade hamburger paddies. Store what you eat and rotate. Have a min of a yr supply but I would wager you going to need more.

Eggs. Although eggs of course have an expiration date, here's how to drastically prolong that.
Always put them with the pointy end downwards.
Rotate them after a week, so the round side is downwards.
The trick is not to let the yolk sac reach the inside of the egg, hence the rotation.
Honey. Buy organic honey so you get a product where the anti-inflammatory properties are mostly intact.
Don't worry about the crystalline sediment it gets after awhile, it's a natural process, just shake the jar when you wanna use it.
If SHTF happens, all drug stores will be emptied along with super markets, so having something antibacterial in your house will be a priority for wound treatment.
Before penicillin, people died left and right from a scratch from a rusty nail.
Buy an Aloe Vera flower. Snap of a branch and use the liquid inside for burn treatments. I always have one in my kitchen.

YES. Haven't seen any of your posts in - long time. Indeed, egg noodles don't last long at all. Neither does spaghetti since I'm a huge spaghetti fan. 😆. There is little I have put back now. Peanut Butter, can salmon - ham - chicken - roast beef. Cans corn - spinach. Flat Bread seems to be -- time durable. Instant mashies. Wow, not a lot.... I need to "re-think" future meals.

    • @Holly-ys1me
      @Holly-ys1me Год назад +2

I got this idea from the dried meals in a jar from watching the brown rice lentil jar meal that Alaska Granny posted. . I do not have the canning equipment or jars. But I decided to make pouch meals in vacuum sealing bags. So I can put 2 cups of water and the contents of a pouch in my 6-1 cooker and press a button for a quick and easy hot meal.
So, I have been reworking my food storage. I have learned some things like that I need less of certain foods and more of others. And some of the unopened sealed food that I purchased from the survival food companies is no good. I accidentally knocked a container of freeze dried bell peppers off a shelf and it did not make the rattle noise when I picked it up. So I opened it to find a moldy clump. That was not cool.
The bags of dried beans contain rocks and debris. My favorite dried bean that I store in bulk 22 pounds each batch has about 2 pounds of rocks and debris so I really have 20 pounds of beans after I picked out the rocks and other debris. Some even had various seeds from soybeans to hemlock and others. I spent days picking all that out. I assumed that each pound was 2 cups because that is what the package had listed. My favorite beans have 2 1/2 cups per bag. So my dried beans had to all be repackaged minus the rocks, seeds and other debris. I do not want to see dried beans right now.
Instead of rice that should be rinsed, I am using parboiled rice for my pouch meals. I made Parboiled Rice with dehydrated vegetables and soy powder for a vegetable fried rice meal pouch. I can add canned meat to it.
I also made Parboiled Rice with the cream of chicken powder for a creamy rice meal. I can also add canned chicken.
I measured out Cream of Wheat with raw turbinado sugar for meal pouch.
I measured out and sealed single ingredients into bags to make it easier to assemble for many other meals. I did the beans and the regular rice that needs to be rinsed.
Next up is the burrito filling pouches which are flaked refried beans with taco seasoning and dehydrated vegetables. So I can put 2 cups of water and my pouch into my rice cooker to make a meal when I make my own tortillas.

@@AlaskaGranny Oh yes, I do that. But I can't stock up 10 years of vitamins for an emergency situation or to save money, for example. When we think about emergency situations where we eat ultra long life items we might need supplementation (even people who don't usually take vitamins) because we might lack certain things found on fresh food like Vitamin C. It's always great to have seeds, of course, but considering we currently have access to a wide variety of supplements I always felt it would be wise to have some vitamins around.
