If I had to fit some high-calorie food into just one coat pocket or the outside pocket of a backpack, I would choose a small box of raisins, a small bag of peanut M&M candies and a few individually wrapped "steak" style beef jerky sticks. If I still had some room, I would add a few individual size packets of Gatorade powder or Emergen-C vitamin powder to add to any bottled water I could get. These items are also good to take on airplane flights or commuter train rides because you never know if you could be delayed for hours and miss getting a meal. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

When my Uncle Lester died someone gave my Aunt Mildred some protein drinks. It's something I would have never thought of. I'm glad you mentioned it. Grief kills the appetite, and it makes it hard to concentrate on even simple tasks. Great share!!!

I was at one of my local grocers two weeks ago and in the Asian Foods section, I discovered canned cooked and peeled quail eggs stored in salted water. The price per can is $3.99. I bought 6 cans.
Later in the month, I returned to buy more and to my luck, they were being restocked right when I arrived at the aisle. I grabbed 6 more cans of them.
They are a delicacy and go great with so many Asian recipes that it fits into my nutrition plan very well. Tasty too.

The first time I tried rice cakes (the 70's) I got the plain. And you described them perfectly... like eating cardboard! The only thing that saved them was topping them with a little peanut butter. The caramel ones weren't too bad. I like the white cheddar ones but haven't seen them lately.

I found a case of SPAM on sale for a great price. Not my favorite but the price was too good to ignore. Jerky can be pricy but lasts forever and is lightweight for hiking. I like getting comfort sweets like mini chocolates or hard candies. In a pinch the right ones can be used as sweetener in coffee or tea. And, while they’re bulky, the 2 liter bottles of soda are often less than $1 for cheap comfort calories.
Surplus military food is an option. My dad was former military and when I was a kid we always had C-rations around. I actually loved most of them. I since have inherited some large military canned meals. I’ll have to try one soon (rotate) to make sure they’re still OK.

I live in N.Florida and none of our WalMarts carry them. They were on the WalMart website last time I checked but no longer. I checked Amazon and Target's websites and they arent there either. I've been noticing shortages like this getting worse and I'm a positive thinker. Maybe someone else can can scout their local area and add some input.

I get canned soups that we like and then canned chicken and beef and we add some meat to the soup to make it a more substantial meal. Along with a salad it makes a good weeknight dinner but just the soup and meat can be eaten straight from the can if needed. If you get 30-50 meals worth you can have a SHTF dinner once a week and cycle through your canned food supply every year to keep it fresh.

Get your tall cup with ice and add coffee or espresso and then the protein shake and maybe a shot of heavy cream if you like. Much less sugar than Starbucks and you cycle through your protein shake preps regularly. Though the shakes are getting so expensive it is still a bit cheaper than Starbucks.

Now that I have become aware that i have a (severe) SOY allergy, I've been checking labels. Amazingly, SOY is in nearly everything canned... My most disturbing was to find SOY TUNA. I mean come on, why is there soy in tuna. Soy in pizza, breads, canned ravioli, soups, I just dont understand. So, there is no SOY in my Bacon Jerky, fruit cocktail, white chocolate caramel cappuccino (yet) or dry pasta so, closet cleaning again, I would guess.

It makes no sense to add soy into things. My grandfather had a severe palm oil allergy and I learned to read labels growing up. Back then there was even palm oil added in the dry kool aid packets, there was only one brand of bread, mayo, cake mix and butter he could have, this was back in the 1980s. It makes me wonder why palm oil before and why soy now? So hard to avoid unless you make everything from scratch

People don't always think about taking protein when they have snacks that they need to take, and meats and nuts are great . I can't find the sesame-nut mini bars that you had me on the lookout for. At least I got a number when I did see them twice; I keep two in my purse. I have a number of decent snack bars put away, most were frozen beforehand.
I have quite a bit of dried fruit.
The cereals are great for kids. Mine often ate cereal like that and drank milk on the side. We have laid in protein shakes as preps.
I laid in a number of cans of tamales, of all things, but I love them. Speaking of Hispanic foods, did I tell you that I found that mylar-bagged tortillas have lasted for 3 years that I know of in the commercial packs,(like in Old El Paso taco kits), and ones that I put in mylar bags just checked after a year and a half are perfect?
Sweet rice rolls at Dollar Tree and other stores are also holding up in mylar bags.
You never know. 3 weeks ago we had a broken water main and had no water, then a boil-water advisory. Last week a big transformer blew and my sister was without power for a while. You just never know.

All I need is a positive attitude eh?
I know it's all for the best, just as I know it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.
I've been looking for 20b propane tanks for my duel fuel generator and found a BBQ for sale with four tanks. All I wanted was the tanks and there was only three, not four, when I got there and one was too old to be refilled BUT! IT was 3/4 full and I'm not using it right away so bonus. The propane doesn't go bad.
Turns out the BBQ was a mess but it works and the guy was moving so he sold me everything for $50 and I took it.
New empty tanks are $64 so I did OK by my books.
I have six tanks so far and I'm shooting for twenty. That's only 400lb of propane and it will keep the generator running for awhile at least.
Burn the gasoline first of course.
Keep up the great work and good luck.

In college a carload of us would go hiking in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, NH on weekends, a lot, three seasons. All we each took to eat was a stick of Hard Salami, a block of Cheddar Cheese (or whatever you liked), a loaf of French Bread, some Wine of course, Water, .... Boy did it taste good, it was perfect. Some of us also carried a bag of our favorite 'trail mix'. Mine had: peanuts, tree nuts (cashews), dried Tropical fruits, m&ms, little pretzels (loved these), lots of raisins, corn or rice Chex cereal (loved Chex too) , sunflower and/or pumpkin seeds ... It was a yummy buffet, lol, for snacking.
At home Chef Boyardee is my favorite fall back. I keep my car stocked with a jar of peanut butter, a jar of strawberry preserves, a sleeve of Pilot Crackers and plenty of bottled water. This will keep me fed and hydrated for days. Sometimes a bag of jerky but that always disappears before needed in an emergency. Keep it Simple. Thx AG, good topic.
