- I love to buy food in bulk, but it needs to be stored properly to protect it from light, moisture, insects, and more. I will talk about a number of methods that I use, and when and why I use them.
Hi, I'm Vickie. I live off-grid on a modern 40 acre, homestead in Northern Nevada. I love making sourdough breads, cooking, making soap, canning, dehydrating, gardening, making cheese, and a lot of other things that are required living on a homestead. I love to cook from scratch, and to be prepared for whatever life throws our way.

I love your videos, I am 85 years old and when I click on one of your videos, it cheers me up!!! Keep making Dollar Tree videos as I enjoy each one of them!!
I love how calm n matter of fact you are! Blessings
I just cut my labels with the box/packaging and tuck it in the jar - readable up against the side
That was a great video. Seems like a whole generation lost that knowledge. My Mom and Grandma did all the things you show us, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me....
I’ve never heard of using a break-bleeder to vacuum-seal-and the fact that it’s manual makes it a must-have for sure-we’re gonna have to get one 😊👍
If you’re ever out of fingernail polish remover (I didn’t know it worked on sharpies), painters tape works well for the canning lids because I only have to peel it off for reuse.
I Love your channel lady, you inspire (and teach) me to be more self-reliant, thank you 🙏🌻🥰
I store my dry goods just like you, Vickie. The storage buckets with gamma lids are so nice. I have the pry lid, too and it is invaluable. I save my Asure bags. Something tells me storage containers, jars, and bags are something to hang on to and will become scarce.
Yeah I am trying to stock up on quart-sized FoodSaver bags.
You can purchase food saver bags on a roll and it is so much more cost-effective. That's how I buy mine because sometimes you just don't need a big bag for or you need one bigger than the pre-made ones.
You are certainly right. Knowledge good sence and wisdom keeps us prepared
We save grocery sack shopping bags (for potty bags later) ball up a full bag into a giant clear bag, that has all of the full bags full of bags in it; it's just a huge clear contractor bag full of you know what bags. lol
I've found that most dry goods (i.e. pasta, white rice, etc...) stays good for 5 years and even up to 10 years, so long as the jar is very full and an oxygen absorber & bay leaf are left on top. That's for canning jars that aren't vacuum sealed or anything. Oh, and I have found that it's best to use the amber jars, unless you're keeping the jars in a very dark & dry place.
I love that hand pump vacuum sealing device! God bless.
You can find brake bleeders in the auto section of Harbor Freight, Autozone or Napa.
I'm going to look for bulk bins now. Thank you Vicki for all your information.
Your right about a lost generation.
I am teaching my granddaughter to store and prep.
I use the JAR KEY from Amazon to open jars. It also protects the lid. Thanks for the tips!
Rhonda
I have had great luck with finding those gaskets for the jars at Ace Hardware stores.
I also store my dry goods in vacuum sealed jars . Love Winco too.
Good video. I do all things you do. Dehydrating, canning, we have 3/4 of a acre he provides small garden and we have 6 chickens. Beautiful flower beds. We love it. I buy in bulk and storage in jars and vacuum seal them. Awesome
To remove the writing I use alcohol and it also takes out very fast the writing. I also seal everything because I live in a very hot climate. Love to see you preserving your foods.
I use rubbing alcohol (91%) to remove the permanent marker writing from lids. It's usually very easy to get and does a good job.
Gasket solution for antique jars with glass top lids is to use the thick rubber bands from produce. The purple ones from broccoli/asparagus work great👍
Thankyou 🙂
Love this! Thanks.
LUV this one! Thx 4 sharing!!!
The brake bleeding ideas is top notch!
This is my first time here. Notifications on and subscribed. Thank you.
A trick to removing and reusing a label is to heat it. I either use hot water or a hair blower and it peels right off. Thank you for all your videos, I enjoy them so much.
This was a wonderful video. Thanks for sharing we appreciate it very much and may God bless. It takes a special woman to be willing to live this lifestyle....... especially living in the days of instant gratification. At 73 years I have seen a lot of changes. I remember listening to Gunsmoke on the radio along with several other radio programs.
Another way to remove Sharpie writing is to get an erasable marker and go over the writing. It will wipe right off.
Thanks that makes sense!
BTW... I learned about nail polish remover when my neice was a toddler😳😆
Alcohol I have found will take off sharpie marker too.
Butter will take sharpie marker off toddler skin too
I have seen some people use the dog food holders that come with the gama lids and sit on their sides. They hold 50 or 60 lbs of food. You can find them on Sams club or online dog stores. Im sure you can find them other.places to.
I bought a jar opener like that at a yard sale and didn’t even know what it was used for…then I started canning a couple of years ago. I love that jar opener! I saw the brake bleeder on Becoming a Farm Girl. I did buy one but I haven’t used it yet.
Never knew that trick about the nail polish remover! Thank you for such an informative video. The way food prices are going, we should all buy in bulk if possible. I've been canning meats all day that I got on sale.
I have found that you can purchase the off brand white plastic jar lids she showed at Wal-Mart and also amazon for a very small price.
As for the fact they won't seal tightly to the jar... I put a regular canning lid on the jar and use the white plastic lid as you would a ring, seals tight.
I’m new to your channel & I can’t wait to learn more about food preservation & I am sure much much more than I can ever image .God Bless you always & thank you for all the incredible information.🙏🏻❤️✌🏼😊
love Winco!!! my fav store and our bulk bins are open too. I shop at the one in Sparks when I go there every summer for vacation
THANK YOU VICKIE FOR THIS MUCH NEEDED VLOG! BE WELL.
Hi Vickie. First time I have seen one of your videos. I enjoyed it. You explain everything very well. Nice to meet you.
More good information,
The dehydrated celery is a good product,
Great in soups
I bought Farro,
Never tried it but, im going to see if I like it,
Xoxoxo
Hello miss Lori! So happy to see you here!
Hi Ms & Mr Lori!! I love your videos too!!
I’ve never had farro either. Be sure and let us know how it is. Xoxoxo
I just bought some this week also. Foods like this really fill the belly and stretch meat also if ground and added.
Love like minded people. Your videos are great!!
I haven’t gotten through all the comments, but, I also use the antique jars for dry storage, including my herbs that I dehydrate, and I’ve gotten the replacement gaskets from Lehman’s online. And, I’ve even found them periodically at our local (not big box) hardware store.
Yahoo a keto prepper.
I just found your channel.
Love your storage ideas.
I have gotten alot of 5gal buckets from Firehouse Subs. Only $3 each with lid. I have some gamma lids but with milar bags for rice, dog food etc, haven't used yet. Saving for more flour, oats etc. Keep on prepping!
I just found your channel and I'm subscribing. I really enjoyed it and all the information you shared. I'm looking forward to more new videos and to watching your other videos. Thank you so much and God bless you.
Welcome and God bless!
Such great info this came out just in Gods perfect timing. Thanks Vicki.
Thank you for sharing a lot of good solid information. May God bless you, as well.
Have been a subscriber for a long time. But you along with several others just haven’t been coming up. Had to resubscribe to you and several others. Love your program even though I can’t do what you do. Glad to have you back.
I’ve learned a lot from you
Dehydrated celery in bulk. I didn’t know! I buy celery when on sale & dehydrate it myself
Another “duh moment”. I use a hair straightener to seal my Mylar bags, but never thought about fixing a puncture with it 🤦🏽♀️
I just bought a 50# bag of organic raw sugar, vacuum sealed part of it in 1/2 gallon jars, most in a 5 gallon bucket with a Gamma lid, thanks for the reassurance that I did the right thing
Now, I have 150#’s of non-GMO, unbromated flour in the freezer. How should I store it? I usually store it in gallon zip lock bags in my freezer, do I need a Mylar bag to store in a bucket?
Mylar is the best bet in my humble opinion.
New subscriber here. Love watching these kinds of videos. You learn something new everyday.
Thank you for the tip on removing lettering off lids!! Wonderful informative video!
A hair dryer blowing hot over the label will assist in label removal.
I have a vintage lid puller, and you are correct it is wonderful! Keto looks good on you!
Just subscribed and rang the bell! Can’t wait to see more of your videos! I buy in bulk, store mostly in jars.
I do the same with the labels. On some things, like flour or oats, if there are also recipes on the package, I’ll tape that part onto the jar, too. I’m so glad to watch your video, because I never feel confident in the way I do things; this makes me feel better, thank you!
Really good information, Vickie - especially whereas I have never canned before!
A couple of tips for you: Sometimes removing labels can be easy by hitting the label with a hot hair dryer for a few moments. Also, if you don't have nail polish remover onhand, Sharpie marks can sometimes be removed with isopropyl alcohol. 😉
@cindyatwood7144 I have tried isopropyl alcohol over and over to try to get the old Sharpie writing off and it doesn’t work. My lids are brand new, not scratched or anything. I also tried nail polish remover- still doesn’t work. Any ideas to help? Does the percentage on the isopropyl alcohol matter? I have 70%.
I was wanting to get one of the lid removers and then forgot about it, Thank you for the reminder, just got it ordered,I have arthritis in both hands ,very helpful..
Lol you said put a ring on it, and my brain pulled up beyonce' lol and I'm too old for her kinda music..
How do you like canning with Harvest Guard lids and rings..I am so grateful you mentioned in an Azure haul video about taking the labels on the bag off and using for jar ..I did not know that til you said it, so Thank You
Nice to watch. Keep up the good wirk.
Azure doesn’t ship to my location yet. I store dry goods as you do. For the recommendation on the mason jar pry a lid. I did locate it on eBay.
Great tip with the nail Polish remover!! Thanks!
Our health food stores have both the gamma seals & a new one that after screwing on the lid, the middle of the top twists on & off !! It fits buckets holding 21/2 or 3 gallon- they hold about 20 lbs of sugar or flour. Live it cuz they're easier to move & store !!
I have those too, but most ingredients I buy in larger amounts, so I use the 5 or 6 gallon buckets more.
Liberty I also bought some 2 and 1/2 gallon storage buckets from Amazon and I’m going back for more. They are easier to lift when filled, and are perfect for storing small amount foods like spices that I put in small Mylar bags. I got some gamma lids for my 5 gallon buckets and they also fit the smaller buckets perfectly. It’s amazing how heavy 5 gallon buckets filled with food can be. I also store emergency medical supplies and random small household items in 2 and 1/2 gallon buckets.
I learned alot! Thankyou for making this video.❤
Glad it was helpful!
Heidi at rain country is my go to girl to learn things. I also use the brake bleeder. She's so informative
Keep up the GREAT WORK Vickie. Love your videos!
New subscriber here. Loved this video, thank you!
I 💕 All the Information You Gave Us. .... 🤗🙏👍. I My Self Needed This Knowledge. 😊
Amaranth can be popped like popcorn. It can br ground into flour or cooked as-is. Try dry toasting it in a pan first for extra flavor.
We reuse labels often. If we can't reuse the label (if it tears while removing) or if packing tape is pricey we use masking tape.
when I pack salts and sugars for long term storage I put moisture absorbers/dessicants in with the salt or sugar to capture any additional moisture that may be in it
Your sugar may get hard
Your sugar and salt will become like blocks of cement if you use oxygen absorbers in them
Dessicants are not 02 absorbers. Just sayin😍
@@leetripp448 that's why I use them in salts and sugars when I pack them for long term storage
Shouldnt use them for sugar.
I use a small piece of moist Magic Eraser to get the old writing off of the lids. Works great with no chemicals.
So does rubbing alcohol
Um, what do you think is in a Magic Eraser? Those things are loaded with chemicals.
@@GoingGreenMom that's simply not true. It's an abrasive material made of non-toxic melamine foam. Akin to using a sponge, but made to be like very fine sandpaper in texture. There are no cleaning agents in the sponge and it uses the power of water and friction to get the job done
You can purchase the Viceroy gaskets for the older jars at most Canadian Tire stores in Canada. - I have purchased a bunch for all my Crown Jars (Made in Canada).
Ameranth makes good flour when you grind it!
Thank you for sharing the nail polish remover tip!
I just found you today and I’m so glad!
Well organized, very informative video. Rubbing alcohol will remove permanent marker as well. Thank you for your useful information.
We love you and the lifestyle, I wish I had u for a Neibor. Yummm and living in that land. Wow is like heaven 🙏🏻✊🏻
Great informational video.. Thank so very much for sharing Mrs. Vickie. God bless ya :)
I've been using turmeric over 10 years and I've always found the color to be on the orange side and you mentioned grainy, but this is a root that is ground into a powder form. You might check to be sure it's turmeric.
I am new to your channel, but it was informative. Thanks.
Great advice! I'm looking for a second generator now.
Love Winco! Great place for bulk foods and dried herbs! New to your channel! Enjoyed this video!
You are awesome! Thank you and God bless♥️♥️♥️
Girlfriend you are so much my canning twin!
I usually put a metal disk inside the white plastic lid for short term
So glad I found you! 🥰🥰🥰
just subscribed!! thanks for all the tips and tricks!
Welcome!
I just picked up my first Azure Standard order today! I’m vacuum sealing some dry beans this evening and finding room in the freezer for rye & einkorn flour. Thanks Miss Vicky!
Thanks for all the good information
I’m in So Calif and our bulk bins at Winco are still prepackaged, just like at Sprouts.
California is crazy
Have you ever put food safe diatomaceous earth in rice and beans and such. It's a super fine powder (usually used in swimming pool filters). You can sprinkle it around a house to kill ants and pests and so on. But about a tablespoon in a 5 gallon bucket kills pests in there and it is not hazardous to people. Just don't get it in your eyes and lungs. Check it out. Be healthy, stay safe and many blessings, Morgan
Cute apron Vickie.
Try Popping it. one to two tablespoons at a time in a hot dry cast iron skillet. Do it like jiffypop. It's really good.
This is a very good video. Thank you!
That’s the way I do my food in jars. That way you know what they are.
Vickie, Thank you for the info. I have been wanting one of the jar lid lifters. I just never knew what they were called. I was able to find one online and bought it. Thank you for that. I also must try the Acetone for I have always used Rubbing Alcohol which does not work at times. Your teaching is spot on. I just subscribed.
I am glad you were able to find the lid lifter. They are wonderful! Welcome!
You too can own one for $34! 😝
@@justwannasay5454 Wow!!!
Yes, I have seen them for that much and more. My suggestion is to search on eBay. Still costs a bit, but not that much.
@@VickiesCountryHome thank you. I will. Right now could use that $34.00 for so much more 😔😔
Save all glass jars n lids they came with like store bought jars with their canning in it lol . they come in handy for so many dry goods n spices n herbs
Rubbing alcohol will remove the magic marker from the lid. I very much enjoyed your video. Thank you.
We get a black "China Marker" at the local Tractor Supply. Comes off easily.
We only do gamma lids, when we tryed the other lid we would never use the items because the lids were such a pain. I also have a rubber mallet from the dollar tree. I also do the clear tape reused labels.
Be careful if you stack them, we had a couple crack so now we use them in the pantry or keep them on top of a stack. Use a bucket wrench for regular lids.
I got some sunflower seeds from a bulk bin once. When I got them home I found they were rancid. I've not got anything from a bulk bin since.
wow you have invested in a lot of different types of gadgets to preserve your bounty in the kitchen and pantry-
Hand sanitizer takes the ink off those lids, too.
Yikes
I bought a pry a lid from ebay a few weeks ago. Worth its weight in gold. I hesitated because of the price. Now I am going to get a 2nd because like you I am not sure of future availability.
Just got one too.
Vicki do you make your aprons? I love the one you are wearing the colors or beautiful
Thanks Vickie! I did get one of those lid openers. The Azure celery, have you found it to not be tough when re-hydrated?
Good info. Thank you!!
Such a helpful video!!!! Thank you 🙂
THANK YOU! GREAT VIDEO!
Super helpful! Thank you!
My neighbor sell goat & sheep milk in jars. She puts a piece of the packing tape on the lid and then writes on that. Just another idea to consider. Personally, I like ur way better. I think it would turn out cheaper in the long run.
I hate putting scotch tape on the jars because sometimes it is very hard to get the sticky off unless you use gooGone. I usually make a copy of the label and use a non-toxic childrens glue stick and they stay on but wash off just like the ones Ball sells for $4.oo for 60 labels. I'm cheap.
Use vegetable oil to get the sticky off. Cover with a paper towel so it wont slide off, let soak awhile & use scrubbie & dish soap to get residue off.
You can take a dryease marker and write over the sharpie. It will remove the sharpie marker writing.
