To answer your question: If you're counting EVERY Fire Emblem character then there's easily more than Pokemon at this point. Even if you just count the playable characters, there's still roughly between 700-800 from all the games thanks to Heroes making a ton of NPCs playable.
While I don't expect Engage to have much more than the main lord characters even that's still a lot. I recognize Lyn, Roy, Sigurd, Leif, Lucina, Corrin, Byleth, Ike, Micaiah, and Marth from that opening wheel + Celica was also shown which means Alm is probably there as well. I may not recognize some properly on the wheel (Please point out the ones I missed) but the only "lords/Main Characters" missing outside of those ones are Hector, Eliwood, Erika, Ephraim, Chrom, Robin, Xander, Ryoma, Claude, Dimitri, and Edelgard, which almost all of those are sure to be in the game. I suppose since Heroes is considered a mainline game they could even include OCs from that like Alfonse and Sharena who are also lords. Regardless I'm very excited for a new Fire Emblem, I have a ton of fatigue from Three Houses being the only game for the last three and a half years.

    • @S.B._Chalphy

Yup, and the characters on the wheel are (clockwise from the top):

Story of Seasons is the new localization title for Harvest Moon ever since Marvelous got a new American publishing wing. They used to have to go through Natsume. Natsume still owns the localization branding so they've been trying and failing to make new games under the old localization branding. That's why these remakes have new titles.

I am beyond excited for Tears of the Kingdom (still feels weird to not call it BotW2 anymore haha) But also really excited to watch you guys play it (after I finish it of course lol) I actually found you guys from randomly searching for a BotW LP to watch and thought yours would be fun to watch. I'll admit at first I was a little hesitant with you guys switching off as i'm not a fan of two people playing a single player game together for LPs, but you broke that mold and made it so much fun to watch. I also appreciated how you streamed it by putting chat away during gameplay. One of my biggest pet peeves of streamers is them playing a game and like 90% of the time it is them talking to chat and barely paying attention to the game. Anyway long post is long but May is gonna be a fun time!

You were mostly right about Fire Emblem; the Three Hopes announcement trailer was the start of the February direct! From a fan of the franchise, ESPECIALLY Three Houses that moment stands out to me as one of my favorite recent game announcements :D

Same here, it looks a little too bright to be taken seriously but I’m curious about the rings of power. Yes I’m calling FE Engage FE Rings of Power because I feel like a lot of the new mechanics will revolve around those rings and summoning old heroes.

    • @NoonDragoon
      @NoonDragoon 2 года назад +2

I'm not really worried about FE at all, we've seen 3 minutes of the game. And Three Houses didn't inspire much confidence with it's first trailer but I ended up loving that one. I've generally liked every FE game to some extent so I don't think I will feel any different with Engage.

    • @jaidora
      @jaidora 2 года назад

@@NoonDragoon Fair enough, personally I think that Three Houses didn't want to show too much because of the massive changes in the second half of the game but Engage looks like there won't be a time skip or anything that spells "here's how we shake things up" outside of the rings. I still feel like it will do well, it looks nice and I'm curious to see who returns from those rings but I just hope it doesn't rely too much on them; in comparison, Crests were a major thing in 3Houses but they weren't the center of everything or the combat mechanics outside of specific weapons.

*I personally like farming style games like Story of Season and find them relaxing for the most part, also some of new ones that were shown look very cute.
*Didn’t know Tunic was coming to the Switch, I had heard it was coming to PS4 so I suppose I’m not surprised; regardless I’m definitely going to be pre ordering it, the streams Tom has done that I’ve watched have been wonderful and I WANT this cute fox game.
*I’ve never gotten the chance to play the Pikmin games myself but after watching your let’s plays, and and a few others, of the games and have loved watching them, thus I’m excited to see Pikmin 4 is finally coming out.
I know people have been hoping for it and I look forward to finding out more about the game.
*I heard the words: From The Creators Of Danganranpa, and immediately and my attention was immediately grabbed. Thanks to Lucahjin I fell in love with that series and have it on my wish list, so the fact that there’s a different game by the same creators with a similar style has me feeling excited!
*Awesome we finally got a trailer and a name for Breath of the Wild 2, I thought the first game is great and just by the trailer that was shown I think I’ll like the second game as well.

@@mightbeanerd IIRC, Marvelous, the developer of these games, decided to switch publishers from Natsume to Xseed but Natsume got to keep the naming rights for Harvest moon in the west for whatever reason. Best direct ever for me tbh, got FFTheatrhythm The final Bar, Octopath Traveler 2, Pikmin 4, and tLoZ TotK. Most directs I don't see any games, or maybe one game that I want. This time they even had a Bullet Hell which is pretty rare for us to get an English release of on console. Pikmin 4 on its own would have left me stoked so this feels like I got extremely spoiled. Best of all? They are all released latest by next year. I don't have to wait in anticipation for 2+ years.

Pikmin 4 exists! Best direct! New Fire Emblem game is cool but also reminds me I have two more routes to play in Three Houses!
Seconding the idea that a lot of farming sims have struggled to catch up with Stardew Valley. I put up as a kid with Wii/3DS era Harvest Moon games having some quirks, not necessarily running super well or looking amazing, and they were fun (I remember enjoying A New Beginning the most), but Stardew beats them in pretty much every way, including the main gameplay loop, content, and general aesthetic and charm. One of my favorite games.

also, RADIANT SILVERGUN RADIANT SILVERGUN RADIANT SILVERGUN AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. I've been on a HUGE Ikaruga kick the past weekend and seeing LIvewire (the publisher behind the three Cave ports on Switch, Dodonpachi Resurrection, Mushihimesama and Espgaluda II) publishing RSG has me SUPER excited. The reason why there are so many farm sims coming out is because these developers are trying to catch up on the farm sim trend. And not to mention the impact that Animal Crossing had at that time as well.

I think Stephen forgot between the announcement and the end of the video that Pikmin 4 was announced for next year! I'm excited to see a remaster of Return to Dreamland. And there will be a number of farm sim games that I try. I feel like the industry is trying to fill the void of new Stardew Valley content, because Stardew Valley's final major update happened "recently." There's just a ton of them coming on the market, every one of them trying to take that crown. And Haunted Chocolatier (the Stardew follow-up game from Concerned Ape) is coming at some point in the future as well. It's an exciting time for the genre! I'm hoping that Tears of the Kingdom will be more for me than Breath of the Wild was. And Pikmin 4 will be my first chance to play a new Pikmin game on release! Really solid direct though. I feel like Stephen's reaction kind of undersold the quality of the line-up.

Kirby Return to Dreamland Deluxe made me audibly scream when I saw it. I love it and it came out of absolutely nowhere. I REALLY hope you guys will play it on the channel because it's one of the best Kirby games alongside Planet Robobot and Super Star Ultra.
Octopath II is insanely exciting for me as well as Fire Emblem Engage. The first quarter of 2023 is looking stacked, then immediately getting followed up by Tears of the Kingdom.
I think the influx of farming sims has a lot to do with how popular Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley were during the height of the pandemic, which if all these studios started development then, it makes sense that they're all coming out now. It's a shame that the fad has kind of died off because I'm sure some of those games are good, but there's just too many of them at this point.

    • @Ellierienna
      @Ellierienna 2 года назад

Most of them are remakes/remasters of existing games, or are new entries into already existing series. The only 'new' games are Harvestella and the fae thing. Those might be because of the new appreciation for the farming sim market, but most of the announcements aren't trying to hop onto a fad. They're just continuing what they were already doing before the pandemic, for the audience they already had. Farming and life sims gained a lot of new fans with the pandemic, but HM/SoS and Rune Factory were still releasing games and remaking/rereleasing their old titles.

Though, to me, the big highlight of the Direct is seeing Mario Party 1 - 3 to be eventually added to the n64 Expansion Pass with online capabilities. It’s a good compromise for Superstars not getting any additional DLC, and it’s great to relive ALL three of them. Including the absolutely nostalgic Mario Party 1, which hasn’t been available on any of Nintendo’s digital services before now.

With It Takes Two, I thought it was already on Switch until a couple days ago when I heard people saying that it might be in the Direct. With Harvest Moon, they announced it for N64 Online in Japan. But I guess the legal issues prevent it and the SNES version already on there to be released anywhere that's not Japan? But because the Japanese service is getting an extra title, we can expect an unannounced title that didn't release in Japan to arrive at the same time as Harvest Moon 64. And of course, still more titles can be expected for announcement in the second half of next year. Donkey Kong 64, Super Smash Bros, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Tooie, and a variety of third-party titles. Even Resident Evil 2 could come to N64 Online in the future, which brings me to my next point: Resident Evil 2 & 3 never got a port, unlike 1 & 4-6 which did. Why were these excluded? And why not also have a cloud version of Resident Evil 1 Remake? Or is there no such remake? Also: I called that Diddy Kong would be coming to Mario Strikers, but I thought that King K. Rool would also be there.

The fact that Pikmin 4 will literally release before Metroid Prime 4 even has a screenshot is hilarious.
The Direct was about what you’d expect if you’ve been following them all these years. Not every rumour proven, a few dull slideshows and general peaks and troughs.
I must say though that for me it looks like they’re remastering a good Kirby game, they finally confirmed Pikmin 4 all these years later and Zelda finally got a title, so it’s probably slightly above average.

Pikmin 4 is coming out... next year and it would've been nice if they had actually showed it but still, it's finally time!
There were a lot of farming sims, but other than those in case you don't care for them we still got some really big news (new Fire Emblem, Pikmin 4 as already mentioned, name and date drop for Breath of the Wild 2), some genuinely surprising ports (like It takes two) and new games, the next batch of N64 games (didn't think GoldenEye even had a chance) and free updates for games already out so I'd say it was still pretty good overall!

There's a lot of farming sim filler (...and come to think of it, I actually still haven't played any farming sims. I feel like it's the kind of game I would like, but I just never tried it), but this was the Direct with the most games I'm interested in in a long time, probably a couple years.
    - Fire Emblem looks good on a gameplay and graphical/UI level - but I'm not very happy with the premise of summoning older protagonists; Fire Emblem has always kept the games very separate unless they're direct sequels, except in non-canon material like non-canon DLC or spinoffs. (With one exception, I guess, with three shared characters between Awakening and Fates).
    - Octopath Traveler II is exciting news, but I don't really know what to make of it yet
    - Mario + Rabbids 1 was a great game, so I'm looking forward to Mario + Rabbids 2. Though I'm kind of in the same boat with this game as Octopath II: it sounds good in theory but I don't know what to make of it and so I'm not actually hyped; I just have my interest piqued.
    - When I first heard about Tunic I thought it looked good, but I wanted to play it on console rather than PC (and the only console I own is the Switch). Then I kind of forgot about it. But I should definitely check it out now once it's on Switch.
    - And of course, Zelda. Not much to say there; looking forward to it, like everyone.
Five games is actually a lot; as I said, more than has been in any single Direct in years. It's almost too much - I don't think I'm going to get around to all of them (not to mention my backlog of games that are already released that I haven't gotten yet: I still haven't gotten Triangle Strategy or Live A Live which I've been interested in - and also I wanted to play Skyward Sword at some point too). But I'm mostly focused in on Fire Emblem at this point. I wasn't a huge fan of Three Houses, and I am absolutely ready for the next FE.

A LOT of people predicted there would be a new system added to NSO, no new asystem added. No HD ports of Wind Waker/Twilight Princess either. Not yet. Not the best Direct, but it will do.

As someone very excited for the Harvest Moon remake I was laughing over the amount of farming games announced. My best guess is that the hype from Animal Crossing (even though it’s not a farming game) has died down and while a lot of those players went back to Stardew they want to try and get more of them into different farming games? I’m not sure really lol

I feel like this was the weakest Direct for one reason; Farming simulators. While I never enjoyed them myself, I could at least see the appeal when it was one or two per year/console generation, especially when they were innovative. Dropping a ton in one announcement on one console? It's hard for me to see the appeal of the farming sims announced today. And it's not because of the specific genre of games. If they were party games, puzzle games, or 3D platformers (all of which I enjoy), I would still feel like that many of a genre would hurt the Direct.
But what really ruined it for me is that the things I was interested in fell into one of three categories: Updates on previously announced/already released games, rereleases of older games, and games that received a brief trailer with no real content shown. When the game that got the biggest reaction out of me is an anime based boxing game that I'm not going to buy, something has gone wrong.

It isn't Nintendo's fault that more companies are dabbling into the farming life sim genre at the same time. For example, Square Enix has never dabbled in the farming sim genre before. You have to present what is being developed. It is what it is.
You don't understand the appeal of farming sims if there is more than one or two per year/console generation, yet the genre's you enjoy (puzzle games, party games, 3D platforms) have way more than one or two games released per year/console generation. That makes no sense to me. We are seeing more devs dipping their toes into farming life sims because there is a large enough appeal for it. Just like devs are going to continue making party games, puzzle games, platformer games because there is a large enough appeal.

Watching your Rain Code reaction made me realize...I think it would be really cool to see you and Mal stream some murder mystery games together? I'm very curious what both of you would think about the Ace Attorney trilogy, and the series in general. If you can do silly voices for characters for extended periods of time, and like really good stories with really good characters, I think it would be right up your alley.
...you definitely probably wouldnt vibe with danganronpa though lmao

"I know there are folks out there who are really fans of farming sims" Oh look, Stephen's talking about me.
Honestly, I don't think farming sims have ever really gone anywhere. There have been so many different games coming out on the indie scene both before and after Stardew Valley. Even games like Slime Rancher have a lot of their roots in farming sims. And I don't think that indie farming sims are about trying to capitalize on a trend so much as they are about the creators having grown up with Harvest Moon and now having the knowledge and capital to make games of their own. When things are created from passion rather than trying to chase a trend, I don't think they just go away.

Ngl, I was disappointed when you didn't stream the Mario Kart DLC the day it came out. I kinda thought that was a no brainer because you'd be able to maximise on views. I'd definitely say that's the way to do it, just stream a once through on the day it comes out. Then you can do a full LP later too.

Perspective, eh? For me this was one of the best Direct's yet. Rune Factory, Story of Seasons and Tales of are my favourite series so all three of those announcements are top tier. I legit screamed when I saw Rune Factory 3 Special because all I have wanted for YEARS is remakes/ports of the earlier DS entries to make them more accessible. I NEVER thought I'd see it though so I am just absolutely giddy. Talk about older games that need to be freed from their older systems - aged mechanics are like the number one reason I can't go back and replay old RFs, so it'll be nice to see it all touched up and new on Switch.
I am also excited about the Story of Seasons game for one particular reason - the expansive approach to gender stuff!! I recall that you can be a guy, girl, or non-binary, and that the marriage candidates are not gender restricted which is HUGE. I do think that's something that's come in the wake of Stardew because they tiptoed around it for years with SoS, but I think the reaction to SV has made these bigger developers realize "oh shit we have to catch up now". Exciting! Finally get to be the fullest version of me a little pixelly avatar can be, no compromising part of myself to play a game that I otherwise love. That being said... since the 3DS entries... they've been kind of lackluster. One SoS I'd love to see is a remake of the Wii games (ToT/AP... not MM) - and I think since its the same cast of NPCs it'd be really neat to see them combined into one world, maybe. I don't know. I want more farming sims!! I am the gamer Stephen mentioned where I would play a farming sim, and another, and another. Heh.
BOTW2!! TITLE!! DATE!! That's so exciting!!! NEXT YEAR (for now...)
I think my #1 biggest, happiest take away (and this is saying something because of the Zelda info) is Rune Factory 3 Special, because that gives me hope for the trend of remastering those continuing and that is one of my biggest video game wishes.
Happy for yall that you're getting Pikmin!!
P.S. Stephen you were right about the Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon thing. The tldr of it is one company, Natsume, was localizing them/publishing internationally for years as "Harvest Moon", but Natsume owns that name, so when the devs turned in house for publishing outside Japan, they had to switch to a new name, hence Story of Seasons. But then Natsume also started making their own "Harvest Moon" games. So classic Harvest Moon and new Harvest Moon are very much Not The Same. IMO, the Natsume ones are disappointing as all hell.

I also believe that as many N64 games as possible should be on NSO so seeing more of those is good too.
